This scene is a masterful piece of storytelling. The start of this journey to search for the treasure is probably my favorite part of the movie ever since I saw it in the theater in 1985. This is where the movie is at its purest. Every kid can relate to having these dreams of finding a treasure or solving a mystery.
I’ve gotta say, with 85 it’s weird because you had Back To The Future too which is just LEGENDARY. Still adore this one though, I grew up watching both in the 2000s

This is such a special movie. I can't tell you how special it is in my memory. The soundtrack to this film, the mystery of this place, the mystique of their adventures (even though its fictional).
I have seen this movie so many times I’ve lost count. It always takes me back to when I was growing up. I always feel like a kid again every time I watch it. My favorite scenes will always be: Chunk’s “Truffle shuffle”, the painting scene with “Mouth”, and “You boys like tongue?”
That glimmering keyboard music when Mikey notices the map in the frame and then proceeds to tell the story about one-eyed Willie is so hypnotic and literally touches your soul!
the new generation wont understand how cool it was to go see these movies back then. there were like 15 movies a year and each was an event. i remember going to the movie theater to watch this and the whole place was made up like a pirates cave. it was so cool.
That sounds bomb. I grew up in the very late eighties and then nineties this one was and still is a favorite film of mine. We didn’t go to the theatre too much but once in a while and that’s where I fell in love. I never knew butter could be so synthetically delicious.
They did it with many movies. One of the fun things from the analogue era. Im sure some.movies still get that every now and then but it was much more of an event to go to the movies before.
I know this is weird but Ive never seen the Goonies. I don't understand how it was never in our collection of movies growing up. Im on a Ke Huy Quan kick and now want to watch it! It looks like it would of been a favourite of mine no doubt!
Sean Astin is fantastic in this movie. His character is someone you knew growing up back then. Big Thank you to my big brother for taking me to see this in theatres.
I still remember my friends in elementary school constantly saying “Short Round is in that movie”. I gotta rewatch it as I haven’t seen it since Elementary School and for Ke Huy Quan’s Oscar win.
I’ll never forget, my aunt used to take us to the movies at least once a month. We’d get dressed and spend the day with her. We had to look in the paper, to choose a pg movie. We knew we wanted to see this one. She chuckled and ground the best time to go see it. ❤❤
I remember one time i actually had a dream about this movie and i was one of the characters. i have watched it so many times that i memorised all the scripts that when i dreamed about it, it felt so real. This movie will always remain somewhere special in my heart
I will never, ever tire of this movie. I first watched it in the theatre when it was released and have watched it countless times since. Just today I've watched it twice.
I watched this as a kid and sparked my love for adventure movies. I made a flat skull type key like the one in this movie, based off the table mountain in cape town. @@zil1832 Mouth was talking about the Pole Position arcade game. The grand daddy of modern racing games. Was real popular back in the day. Getting a score of 1632 is absolutely pathetic. Like, not even trying. . . 😆
Goonies and back to the future took place on the same day Saturday Oct 26th 1985, but back to the future was a Universal production and both movies came out a month apart in 1985.
I always thought they called them eye of the storm. Actually had a mini desktop 1 once. I accidentally broke the glass/plastic cover once because I forget what exactly I was doing trying to figure out a bunch of computer wires hooked up, 1 of them I pulled once whipped around and shattered it, just severing its power as opposed to my figuring electricity would fly. An American cinematic Masterpiece 10/10. The fact that this film is not on the top 100 films is clearly a sign that Hollywood has lost its luster.
