Yeah right. Cashman doesn't know what the weaknesses are apparently lol. Got Cole, Rodon, and Gil. The starting rotation although could use work isn't a NEED. They need to be getting bats to help out Judge because he is all they got literally, and the fact that Judge is the biggest playoff choke artist ever doesn't help.
Personally I preferred we sign a few very good players over Soto who is a great player because it likely meant we'd get Soto and nothing else. I mean for the Mets, Soto is an amazing signing because money isn't an issue for Cohen but for the Yankees committing $800M to Soto would have meant us running it back with no real improvement in the team and last years team lost to the Dodgers and probably loses to the Padres. Countless games I watched last year where Soto and Judge carried the offense with no balance in that lineup. Countless games I watched with atrocious defense and baserunning and us signing a groundball pitcher hints that defense will be a priority. We've already let Torres and Rizzo go and Soto has left us so that's 3 positions we can drastically improve on defensively and on the basepaths. Also, Judge goes back to right field where he is better defensively, has less strain on his body, and can show off his biggest outfield strength his arm. We also now have a glut of starting pitchers and this deal was done early with Winter Meetings ongoing for us to leverage that surplus to maybe get a quality bat or two. Maybe we get Tucker from the Astros or another great bat. I much rather this direction for my team.
Who’s to say yanks still don’t spend even if they had gotten Soto? You don’t know . Team can be better balanced if they get the right guys . No choice now
@thexnewyorker7284 Hal himself said the over 300m payroll was "unsustainable" so the heavy implication is the Yankees aren't going over 300m. And with all the free agents (including soto) off the books this offseason the Yankees were gonna commit to maybe 70m-80m in additional payroll this offseason. Signing soto for 47m leaves you with 23m-33m to fill 4-5 holes. Sorry but you aren't getting any above average free agents for less than 10m a season (except maybe a reliever). For context Cortes will make 9m next season and Torres made 14m last season. So the Yankees would have been left scrapping the bargain bin once again for the J D Davis' of this world for at least a few of those holes.

This was a great signing! I hate that this is being deemed as Plan B, because Max is an absolute force on the mound. Getting Bellinger and Walker would round this offseason nicely. An outfield of Judge in RF, Dominguez in CF (his natural position), and Bellinger in LF would greatly improve our defense. With an infield of Walker, Caleb Durban, Anthony Volpe, and Jazz Chisholm would make this team better. Jazz is too good of an athlete, and I saw his instincts and intangibles at 3b to give him a full offseason and spring training to get even more comfortable in that position. This would create a more athletic and faster lineup for our sluggers to get those RBIs. After those signings sure up the 'pen with Kahnle, Hill, and another arm and let's get back to work!
The extra yr was to keep the AAV down and for the Yankees to avoid a tax. If the Yankees get 4 Fried type years and 2 average years, it's easily worth it n more. Learn all aspects of the actual game, your emotions don't count.
