FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER: I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.
My black Lab took to flying just fine. A few years later, I introduced her to Mutt Muffs at home, and she promptly pawed them off. Then a friend and I took her flying. In flight, I put the Muffs on her. After a few minutes, I took them off. Then I put them back on her, and she left them on -- she knew the benefit. She kept them on the rest of her flying career.
She was probably just trying to please you....... She was a lab after all............ . Best dog ever!!!
Inside Hoover’s head as he climbed in:
“Das ist nicht der Volkswagen” !!!
Haha - yup
Mina papir es habin bin lochin, take me home!
😝😝
Steve you were reassuring Hoover at the time he was getting nervous and continued to do it. That sent the message to him that the nervous mental state was okay. Giving him treats was more signal that it's okay to be scared. He knows your feelings faster than you know them. Your friend was right, it was you. When you make a big deal of something he picks up on that in a split second. You might try not rewarding him with pets and cookies when he is nervous or scared. Hoover is loyal and will endure much to be with you, even if he's scared every time he does it.
Interesting take. I don't claim to be a dog expert by any means. But what I was trying to do was stay ahead of the stress. Once he is actually stressed - he's gonzoe and does not want cookies at all
@@FlightChops You might try acting like it's nothing different than a car ride. Everything's going to be fine, you,(Hoover) just sit in your place and I'll take care of everything. Unless he becomes physically sick in the plane he will be just fine. When you take him flying with just the two of you and have no time to deal with his state of mind, that will also calm him because you won't be worried about him.
Cool yes, appreciated. It is just that it is not a car ride - there are several significant differences to a car ride... So I wanted to be there to deal with the transition. Agreed that I can't coddle him every time - but just like all his training from walking down the city street, to his first exposure to water, we've always used treats and positive re enforcement to reward him doing well.
I was also going to point that out. When training animals, and especially when trying to build up their confidence, the key is to be relaxed and confident, and striking that balance of acknowledging their feelings as well as letting them know it is no big deal.
If you become worried for them, they become worried too. Just imagine being afraid of flying and then flying with a nervous pilot who constantly checks in to see if you're okay. That is likely to make things even worse.
Another thing to consider would be to gradually desensitize. Try ground work first, and then short flights, gradually increasing exposure as the dog's comfort level allows. Also aiming for smooth morning/evening air first will let you differentiate between nervousness and motion sickness, which some animals can have a hard time with, just like humans.

Next episode: Hoover's first solo flight.
My dog flies ultralight 103 by himself all the time. We will wake up to the sound of a single engine and see him zipping around the farm early in the morning.
you prolly dont give a damn but does anybody know a way to get back into an Instagram account??
I stupidly forgot my login password. I would love any tricks you can give me.
@Amir Michael Instablaster :)
@Phoenix Mekhi thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im trying it out now.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Keep track of his hours. My Yorkie has 1527 hours!!! His name is Spike!!
How high elevation have you gone with your yorkie
Once he learns the sights and sounds of the plane he will handle it just like a car ride. My English bulldogs have tons of hours in our Cherokee 6 (club seating). One prefers to sit in a seat and one prefers his dog bed on the floor. They pass out in the climb and don’t wake up until we start our descent. Our older dog (bed sleeper) will brace his butt against the lip of the baggage area before landing. One rough landing years ago that he obviously still holds against me.
That's so cool. My pooch I had years ago loved all motorsports. The car obviously and the boat. I always wondered what she would have thought about flying.
You‘ve introduced me to so many different aspects of GA Steve, such a precious channel...
Steve, we had an issue like this with one of our dogs. Our daughter turned out to be the key to getting our dog to calm down. Try having Evelynn sit with him.
Very well done Steve! You followed all the right steps in making sure you were taking care of your pup. Our dog doesn’t like the mutt muffs, but will wear them until we land, then he shakes them off.
Thanks - and glad to hear you’re able to fly with your dog and not have too much stress
@@FlightChops my wife is a dog trainer that specializes in anxiety and said you really did a great job of preparing and introducing Hoover to flying. Keep working through it like you are ...slowly... and you may have a great flying companion.
I always love a dog video. Dogs and flying are aces.
"The crate... is just not on the table". HA! Good one.
Back in the 70s the guy at the aero club would put his huge St. Bernard in the front Pax seat (Cherokee 140). He'd be sitting up looking out the front like he knew what was going on.
I had a St. Bernard as a kid… Would love to see a cockpit video of a trained St. Bernard copilot!
Such a cute puppy! Dogs make planes even more awesome!
Hoover has flight chops too now..😁
What a lovely dog..!
Good boy! Hoover did well. We fly for Pilot's and Paws on occasion and all of the dogs we transport are in cages. Out of the 10 dogs we've transported to date, only two have gotten sick. The rest behaved just fine. In fact, we even adopted one of them.
Fly safe and fly often!
That's awesome!
Good boy.
What a good boy! His demeanor reminds me of my 136 lb. Great Dane, Harley. ❤❤❤
Well that was just adorable. Cute how you added The '' Cookie Hesitation'' Meter. Very scientific. Beautiful dog too!
Hey there, so nice to see you comment from a great distance. Thank you, we think he's adorable for sure....actually the girls just came by for a visit with him (outside)...
@@elainethorne4344 My pleasure!
Kudos to Blake for taking the time to make sure everything was good for Hoover.
Love how this video hit a spot the aviation community has never really talked about. Would love to see Hoover and Bently in the same plane/helicopter!
We took our Golden Retriever "Kelsey" up to visit the in-laws at their cabin north of Sioux Lookout Ontario in a PA12 on floats, the tricky bit was keeping her out of the water before the flight (She loves to swim) so my wife didn't have to fly 45 minutes with wet dog next to her... on the return trip however, there was a wet passenger or two!
I plan to try to do the same with my girlfriend. Not sure she will be as compliant as Hoover, though... ;-)
Bring her lotsa cookies as well!
and dont forget the harness and the blanket
Well like Hoover continue to give her bones.
She's probably gonna have a bone to pick with him afterwards anyways!
You probably shouldn't tell her they're called Mutt Muffs....
Had no idea you were a fellow golf R enthusiast. deff subbing now
That’s so adorable! Hoover is such a sweet pup!! Omg
My old dog would have been a lot like hoover ie he would definitely been scared and/or unsettled in a plane but i think that hoover should get used to planes after a while. I love your videos man. thanks
HOOVER IS THE COOLEST!
Met you at the museum for the P-51 viewing and I mentioned this video, that was my first time visiting the museum and now I am realizing how many photos you have from there. Cool stuff lol, small world. I am interested in flight training over there and it's great to meet one of the sources of inspiration I've gotten for aviation :)
Good times. Get after that training! You’re lucky to live so close to an awesome facility
I wish I could like this twice! We have a goldendoodle who would love Hoover.
What a good boy!
Hoover did awesome. Not normally a dog person but he's being an awesome doggo :)
that day in 2016 was a super bitter sweet one for me. it was my birthday, I also did my first solo that day and after landing heard that an Aviation legend has left us.
Hey chops , starting assembly on an in-progress rv-6 build. Never knew what a vans was til I seen your build. Come down to Hawaii for some flyin and a video.
So awesome! I love to hear this! And HELL YES please to visit Hawaii when international travel is more of an option - can you email me to discuss? flightchops at gmail dot com
Awesome! Love it 😊
Really cute dog!
I recommend a Sleepypod car harness. They have them for dogs up to 110 pounds. Great fit for my 70 pound Catahoula, and they’re crash-test rated. 👍🏻
He's braver than most human passengers!
Very cool episode!
Hoover is a great dog. Years ago our standard poodle flew with us in a Cessna 206 from Page AZ to Halls Crossing UT over Lake Powell after ferrying a houseboat. He did fine but was nervous. I bet he would have been more comfortable if we would have kept up with it.
OMG, The dog is stellar, time for a negative g push over, that will get his attention. Great post! My dogs would love this, hoping I will do this soon with them. Bob Hoover is one of the most iconic figures of flight save for my father who passed away last year in september at 94 with over 40 thousand flying hrs. Also get the dog a log book.
Actually Bob hoover was better at pouring coffee while inverted.
Love the log book idea. Even for passengers who are hesitant.
A neg G pushover will get Hoover to p(up chuck).
Good boy Hoover !!!
I love Hoover.... ❤️❤️ he is so well behaved
Yeah - he's definitely a good dog.
Really nicely done guys, way to look after and reassure man's best friend 🙏😁
Ohhh poor Hoover (for now). He’s gonna be fine ❤️
Yeah - He was pretty happy over all - I think he'll be fine
Another flying fantasy. I am envious that you have achieved. I have problem getting my wife into my crappy plane let alone my dog. If Hoover is prone to motion sickness, you sure are brave to keep filling the barf tank; your friend is chill about that too! Thanks for a fun video.
I've gotten to the part before takeoff, and I havve an advice :)
If you're anxious about the dog being or getting anxious - he notices and gets anxious :)
Same with people. If you're over-focused on calming them down, they notice and get stressed ;)
Be calm and relaxed, and the good boy ( and most people ) copy that feeling / mental state :).
Especially if they (dog or human) are anxious - you be what you want them to be, less on "getting them there". YOU BE there :)
Love the videos.
Appreciate the insights. I'll phase him in less less attention next time.
I'll likely be PIC next time and won't have the bandwidth to focus on him.
I knew as soon as you called him HOOVER who he was named for
This video had a smile on my face from start to finish.
Loved the video.
Take care,
Be safe.
vary cute dog cant wait to take my dog flying
love foreflight's digital checklists too. such a shame my flight schools never allowed us to use them. Paper only.
Still have paper as a back up - but really once you have the digital check lists integrated into your workflow, it is really hard to want to go back.
Awwwww I love Hoover
Great Hoover 👍
You done this very well to be Your first time in air 👍🌷
Good boy Hoover.
I use a ruff rider as a seat belt and walking harness. It has been crash tested. I never used it in an air plane though only my jeep haha.
Great video and what a cute dog!
My dad and I took our Great Dane, a dog that weighed 70 kg, flying in a Rallye Commodore and a Piper Cherokee Six. The Six was the better option:)
Hoover is an absolute star. keep us updated how he adapts.
I have a dog named Tiger (Grumman) and I really want to take him flying. He's a big guy as well and I really hope to get him airborne soon . This was great!
He is going to love flying with all the treats lol, they have some pretty nice harnesess available for securing pups in cars taht would probably work well here
Hoover is a good boi
Some years back we took in a rhodesian ridgeback, another big and friendly dog. She was used to car travel but I have only a 2 seat sports convertible. Sometimes she'd love it from the get-go, sometimes she needed the car to be in motion before she'd chill enough to spend most journeys with her nose glued to the windscreen. Sitting on the passenger seat her head was as high as mine so we'd attract puzzled looks sometimes. For a first time Hoover's coping fine.
Great video . It looked to me like Hoover did quite well. You looked a bit more nervous than him. (Lol) . All in all a great job; both in the introduction to flight and in the video itself. That had to be hard, controlling Hoover and the cameras at the same time. Once again, good job 👍!
Thanks!
You'll have to scan the video listings, but captmoonbeam has one of the funniest dog as a passenger stories I've ever heard.
Cute dog! Also, knew Blake looked familiar somehow. Saw the news on BlogTO about his heart-shaped Valentine's Day flight over Toronto. Real class act pilot :)
You will find out for sure the next time you approach the plane and ask him to get in.
glad you got the dog muffs, neccesary
Hoover’s stress level looked about zero.
The pup was fine👍🏻
Good boy! Good doggo also!
Our first dog, Partner, a part cockapoo, took to flying like it was no big deal. Perhaps because the sound and feel of a 172 isn’t radically different than the ‘68 VW Beetle he had travelled so many miles in from the time he was 6 weeks old. He was about 9 years old before his first flight. He just curled up in the back seat with the kids and was perfectly happy.
Interesting the differences in the rules. In Australia carriage of animals in aircraft is generally only allowed in crates. Some exceptions but Hoover would not qualify. Think the muffs may also be a bit tight. Keep the videos coming. Variety is the spice of life.
Then the exceptions are service dogs, you still need them constrained to a moisture resistant Pad.
That's not for your benefit @ray Cowin just for ppl who may be interested
Casa are introducing a part 91 in December 2021. So general aviation rules which are more inline with FAA. One of the items listed is relaxing the animal rules.
This is so awesome, I’ve been waiting for exactly this video to come along. I’m doing my PPL and the subject of “could we take the Beagle?” is the most frequent with my wife. The Beagle is called Douglas after Douglas Bader.
New book coming soon from FlightChops . . . "Dog Is My Co-pilot"
Hoover weighed 90lbs. at the start of this air adventure but I suspect he was120 lbs from dog treats by the end.
11:02 I know it's not a huge deal when there's nothing plugged in, but it's best to make sure that there aren't any headset or charging cords draping over the yoke, even when it's not in use. Especially when taking off or landing, you want to make sure that you can move the controls freely if necessary.
Wow that guy is cute
Its cool that your doggie is flying with you but I feel for his safety he should be in a crate or behind a screen. hope to see more of hoover. I stopped watching sailing doodles and flying doodles after Mavrick passed, wish you you well.
0:20 I can't get over the saying that the dog and his owner often look alike. 😅
Nicely done, all three of you. Give us some updates on Hoover's next few outings. Cool stuff. Thanks. Wayne (DA40 KSBA)
Thanks for making this! I have a golden doodle too and looking forward to flying with him. What is that dog ear headset?
They’re called “mutt muffs” I think.
I'm not known to be a fan of dogs but I think Hoover is great.
Ok if I saw that dog out in the wild so to speak I would say that has to be Flight Chops dog and Hoover what a great name.
Haha - awesome
Goood booooy!!
My Golden doodle has a similar personality and also a similar reaction to flying or even riding in the car or on the boat. He talks and grumbles a lot, but he always wants to go, even if he is miserable. Being with his family is where he would rather be. He just makes sure to let us know how much he doesn't like the moving, bumping, and noise. In the plane, I can't get him to wear his Mutt Muffs, so I put an old sleeping bag in the baggage compartment, have him lie down, and then fold it over him.
Get Hoover a thunder shirt!
I had to google that. Very interesting... I think ultimately I need a purpose build vehicle harness that offers more support, so that might serve that sort of job as well.
@@FlightChops well the thunder shirt was for the anxiety and shaking. But there are full harnesses out there too
Let hover fly ✈️
I know you mentioned this before, but my brain and names are like oil and water, lol - what breed is Hoover? Part poodle, and ? ? Great vid as usual, Steve! Great job assessing Hoover throughout the flight.
Yeah hey there flightchops, I have a golden doodle that I’ve taken up a few times in my Cessna 182. I even have the mutt muffs you used. I think the reality of it is they aren’t comfortable in planes. My doodle handled it like a champ but I feel guilty every time I take him.
I've found it helpful to bring my dog's bed and a couple of her toys with her. I also let my dog explore the plane for a couple of hours each day leading up to her first flight. I want to see if there is a way I can modify a set of my old headphones so she can hear familiar voices
Awesome content. I didn't know he was born the day that RAH died.
Has Hoover ever been on a bus or a train? I wonder if that would make a difference?
Yes for sure - we have done street car when he was a puppy as well.
An over snug head set is the only thing worst than the flying it's self for a dog. Something even I can relate to.! Otherwise no big deal.!
New UA-cam channel "Flying with Hoover"
When I was moving to my new home I decided to take my two cats on a 2-hour plane ride instead of a six-hour ride in my car. They were calm for the first 90 minutes then the complaints started from the back seat. Overall they seemed to be intimidated at first but they soon realized that there was neither any imminent danger nor where they taken to the vet 😅 I would do it again any time if the time advantage is significant.
Lets go bailey lets go! S 52
My dog is awesome in the plane...just lays down and goes to sleep...
Tips to consider with Hoover: RELAX. The stress they pick up from humans (you) nearby is far greater than their internal stress. You will add to his nervousness by constantly petting him while nervous. You are sending the message that it is ok for him to be nervous - so don't do that. (You're confusing him with mixed messages - send calm and relaxed instead.)
Second - go easy on the treats/food. A small reward is fine, but if he gets a little nauesous, having all those large chews you kept feeding him would only add to distress and mess (if he puked). A LITTLE piece still sends the message of reward without filling him on big pieces. Also, salty treats only add to his thirst (which you don't want) - again, moderation/less if far better and still send the right message.
Practice more by sitting quietly with him and stop focusing on him - your calmness and quiet energy will be what he really needs.
insights appreciated
Are there more episodes with Hoover? I'd like to see if/how he grew into flying. Also: has anyone made a noise cancelling headset for dogs that lets them hear the cockpit intercom?
No new Hoover episodes yet. And I am fairly certain there are no active headsets for dogs :)
Good booooy!
Just wondering if cookie hesitation was due to being full of cookies?
Haha - no. He has a very high cookie threshold
- and we didn't get near it on that one :)
What dogs will do to please their owners! Dick Karl has been flying with his dog for years, and reported about it in Flying Magazine (he had a Cheyenne, which was more accommodating). Remember, baby steps. Maybe more taxiing, and a few more short flights, and eventually he'llaccommodate, and just like you, he'll need to do it regularly or else he'll lose his, I was going to say "sea legs", then thought to myself, "Gee! What's the aeronautical equivalent of sea legs?"
Just to give you a little in sight (yeah pun) into a dog's vision. They have bad eye sight. They couldn't pass any eye test. They have dichromatic vision meaning they can see blues and yellows. Reds would be different shades of grey so avoid red and green dog toys. They are also short sighted. Most dogs wouldn't recognize their owners beyond 100 meters visually, but could smell them 1,000 meters away if the wind is favorable. They have many times more rods so their night vision is far better than ours. Bottom line, at 1500 feet altitude, about all Hover could see outside are the wings. I can see Hover is a great dog. He trusts you immensely.
I can't see flying with mine. They'd be flipping switches, chewing the yoke or playing tug of war with it, barking on the radio... Yeah I could see ATC telling me to copy a phone number. LOL
Thanks for the insights - I had a vague idea about their eyesight, but didn’t know any of these specifics
@@FlightChops Glad that was some help. When I learned about their color vision, I noticed they can find blue and yellow toys a lot easier than red ones.
You have an awesome channel. Keep up the great work!!!
