Martin and Tim from APEX Alaska were awesome for setting everything up to do this! It’s not launched yet, but when it is they’ll have you covered end to end with amazing lakeside accommodations for summer and winter training at the Alaska Aviation Adventure HQ.
Pilots would come and join us to “expand” their flying skills, get to see Aviation from a different angle and experience the application of it to Alaska.
Specialized 1 on 1 training as well as groups of 6-8 to come and fly helicopters, floats (Super Cub and beaver), wheels, skis, lakes rivers and Ocean!

Regarding the Survival kit:
My friends at TacAero shared this code with the Flight Chops community to save $250 USD
on an Aviation Survival Kit this spring.
I am not being paid any portion of the sales,
I just want to be a part of helping get more pilots flying safely.
To get a $250 USD discount,
Use the code Chops250 at check out:

Clearly it is possible to do the work and research to put a kit together yourself more cheaply,
but the very experienced team at TacAero knows what you need.
So if you want to save that time, effort, and the chance of getting it wrong,
I stand behind this ready to go kit.

FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER: I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.
WOW. WOW. WOW.... thanks for living my dream and sharing it with us! This series is awesome!!!
More to come!
This video is probably the most informative video I've seen on the actual dangers of bush piloting. Most videos just act like its a cakewalk. I'm glad I could see what its actually like to fly in Alaskan weather, it has completely changed my outlook on the career. Thanks for making this video
That’s what I was hoping to accomplish with this video - thanks for watching!
You could make a dozen of these Alaska Beaver episodes and it would not get old.
There are at least 3 more coming from this series :).
I just need to get a few other things out of the pipeline first.
I’d like to buy one.
2nd shot is where I go kayaking. Great video!
Holy crap! That has GOT to be the most gorgeous scenery I have ever seen. That's a pilot's dream come true, man. You were so lucky to fly that. And thank you for sharing it with all of us.
cr@p ain't holy dude
Wow, you had a beautiful, rare day. I haven't been back that way for 30 years, and I remember it always being cold and overcast on the best of days.
Nice. Beautiful country. Tks for taking us along. I have to agree, that Beaver motor sounds spectacular.
Steve, another exceptional video. You're putting out some really inspiring content, showing what the world of general aviation is really about. Unfortunately, GA in my country (UK) is quickly dying out from government and council pressure, so it is great to see that at least somewhere in the world general aviation is still thriving. Thank you for the great content! Keep up the amazing work!
Glad you enjoyed it, and so sorry to hear about the struggles in the UK.
You should see what the Knik area looks like in the winter. I just spent the afternoon ski flying around there today and it was awesome. I grew up drift gillnetting in Prince William Sound. It's a pretty cool place.
You’re channel is my favorite out of any I watch on UA-cam.
Literally was going to comment the exact same thing and than saw this. 💯.
My goodness Steve. Incredible video. The scenery is some of the best this planet has to offer. Love it.
I have absolutely loved this series of videos Steve.
Thanks man!
MAN! That was some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen anywhere! Nicely done, Steve!! That Beaver is a beauty, too - looks and sounds amazing. 👍😎
Stunning. So informative and beautiful. My next Flt Sim trip !!
That's a good idea - I bet this are looks pretty cool in MS FS 2020
Oh yeah - now we are talking Steve! Stunning scenery and an awesome plane. Life is good!
That was awesome. Alaska is something else.
I knew it was going to be impressive... but it still exceeded expectations to experience it first hand like this.
What a gorgeous playground!!
Great video, beautiful scenery. Looking forward to the next one
learned how to fly in Alaska many years ago. Thanks for taking me back. Superb film!
Cool, thanks! Glad to help take you back - it is pretty awesome that you learned there!
Absolutely spectacular Steve! You greased that landing and are living the dream! Thanks for bringing us along!
Bryan from Vancouver
Happy to share! Long time subscribers like you are a big part of why we're doing this - thanks for being there for 5 years!
Thanks for bringing us along. That looks like fun!
You bet!
Steve, thank you for informative and incredible content as usual! I have watched every minute of every video you have posted, and have learned SO much! One day I aspire to at least get my PPL. (that is about it as I am color blind) For now, just a sim guy. I got your VM the other day and almost fell on the floor! Thank you for taking the time to pick up the phone! I just received my patch today!!! So stoked! Keep up the great work! - The "serious postage guy" :-)
Haha - awesome. Get after it! I don't think it is a huge deal to get through as a colour blind PPL. And yeah, I was very impressed that you self declared the envelope and had it properly set up with Canada post from the U.S. That was definitely a first :).
Sending out the mail to Patreon supporters is a bit of a pain point for me - it is double edged sword because technically I should declare every embroidered patch as you did, but that labour is prohibitive to do for a legit free gift that I send to all new $5 supporters. So I sneak them as "normal mail", and I think some of them get snagged by customs as a result.
Another fantastic video Steve! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it Adam!
PWS - one of my fav float flying wilderness locations in South Central AK. It's a beautiful area with so many coves and beaches to explore. Exactly - a "time warp". Such a unique area in the World.
I really like the layout on this bird.
The lines help to slim down the rather portly fuselage. And red white and black always works.
The terrain in Alaska is absolutely nuts.
BEAUTIFUL SCENERY !!!
That is, without a doubt, the most stunning scenery on the planet. Amazing!
Man this is exactly the kind of video i was looking for. Entertaining, but educational too, and for a new pilot here in Alaska it is good to see videos of flying in this really really big state and as a newer pilot this is definitely intimidating. But now that i see your video And become more aware of what the flying looks like in Alaska, the fear is starting to go away and now replaced by excitement and a surge of confidence and faith that if these guys cab do it, so can I. Thank you!
That's really good airmanship! Thanks for sharing with us.
Thanks for watching! And for being a 5 year subscriber!
Nice! I love float flying, love Alaska, love the Beaver. This whole “learn to fly the Beaver” series has been great. More please :)
Gorgeous flight, great insights, and a greaser of a landing. Who could ask for more. Nice work!
Glad you enjoyed it
What an awesome video, as it has a dreamlike quality, because this is the dream for many of us. Flying a Beaver in Alaska. Man....sweet! Thanks for sharing, brother!
Yup, I'm loving this series too! Thanks Bro.
Rich.
Awesome footage, man! Could feel a little thrill watching this video! Alaska is so amazing...
Couldn't agree more!
I want to fly a beaver in Alaska more than probably anything else. Finishing up my Commercial Multi/IFR add-on. Might chase the float plane dream after that.
Get after it!
That is so incredibly beautiful!!!!! That must be rough to be living in that dream!!!! I think I’m ready to switch dreams!!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Steve, at 5:36, if you loosen the grip slightly on the mount you might be able to get rid of some of the vibration. I use the "Sony Action Cam" suction cup which has a ball mount and "teeth" for tightening on towards the base. I can loosen it just enough to where the teeth still grip but some vibration is gone. Cool video!
Thanks for the insights on that. The Beaver had some good and bad spots for vibration. other episodes with that cam in nearly the same spot where less shaky. Anyway - those were also Hero5 models, I think the newer GoPros do a better job handling the "shakey jello cam effect".
Insane how much different you have to think about every aspect of the flight up there!! Great Job!!
The scenery is just amazing looking forward to the rest of the series. Safe Travels
The scenery there is really amazing man.
Superb! Made my week. Thanks
Awesome - Our pleasure!
Absolutely fantastic scenery Steve - wonderful experience. :)
Man i have a few planes on my bucket list, this is almost number 1, probably number 2. Amazing documentation. Made me feel like i was there.
Stunning scenery and a great landing - loving your work Steve.
Thank you so much 😀
Man Steve, that's some beautiful scenery up there, nicely done on the landing and parking.
As always Steve, incredibly well put together content and oh so enjoyable to fly along with you, IN ALASKA, this time.
Saturday morning Beaver love...Great!
What a Nature and what a FLIGHT!
Thanks Steve to You and Your fantastic Instructors 👍
Love Alaska ❤
Amazing setting in a perfect airplane. What a dream.
That is SO COOL! This is literally my dream!
Love the chops man! You both look and fly the part. your living the dream man keep it up
Aaamazing video
Your videos are great! Keep up the good work!😁
Another great video and breathtaking landscapes as always.
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome job, Steve, what a pleasure to watch.
Been waiting to see this one
What a spectacular flight over breathtaking beauty! Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I love the technical expertise and information you share with us viewers.
Tom is an encyclopedia of knowledge
Absolutely HUGE amount of info!!!!
Hey Steve,
Thanks for sharing, this kind of flying is something that I would love to do, it suits an often repressed explorer streak in me.
If you make it to the UK at any point I can take you for the £100 cup of tea...not as exciting but bumbling along in a C120 is still enjoyable.
Mel xx
Wow, that’s a great video.
Feels like I’m there with you guys!!!
Great adventure 👍🏼💪🏼
Awesome! Thank you! That's the goal - to try to make the experience as immersive as possible - thanks for letting us know you gelt that :)
Beautiful!
Really enjoyed this, thank you!
Wow. A dream to fly.
thanks for the ride along :-)
Amazing place.
It really is!
And thanks for sticking around as a 7 year subscriber!
That's awesome!
@@FlightChops Thank you! Your content has made it rather easy to do. ;)
I would love to tour Alaska in a seaplane... but totally intimidated by the skillset required. The more you show of this adventure, the more it strikes me how much you had to absorb. Respect.
So... all of a sudden I know where my next flight in Micrsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is gonna take place. I'm a real world pilot too, but the MSFS2020 in VR is the second best thing you can do (with your trousers on). Thanks for a BEAUTIFUL video my man. Keep chopping !
Regards from Norway :-)
I am keen to get to Norway!
@@FlightChops Yeah, you really should try to come visit. We have SO many astonishing places in this country, some places bringing a strong resemblance to what we just saw in this video.
well dont i love being early. great video man
What is the next video after this that has your departure from the lake? Loving this AK series!
Yes, the latest video published is actually the continuation of this one :)
ua-cam.com/video/pe22rZoaIwU/v-deo.html
I would kill to see a beechcraft staggerwing on this channel! Imho one of the prettiest planes ever made
It's on the list for sure :)
That would be amazing!!! They are a wonderful airplane, I scratch built and fly a giant scale rc stagger wing it’s 138 inch wing span and flies like a dream, I would love a full size but lack the funds lol my father and I built a steen skybolt we fly in nice weather but we both dream of a staggerwing
Holy cow i can't wait to watch this! I'm so early 😆
Hope you enjoyed it!
Fascinating insight into bush & remote territory flight handling..! I did catch a mention of 'salt water landing' being mentioned & wanted to ask (as a non-pilot & bearing in mind that salt water may offer better buoyancy than fresh) what the main differences are between salt & fresh-water correlation for floatplane piloting, & particularly, landing performance..?
What beauty
This is fantastic! I would love to step away from the bizet flying I do for a living to fly like this for a few weeks. I might not come back LOL.
Love your videos, man. Always timeless (I am watching some old ones and following your build from the start... and catching up!) and so informative.
Just one question: could you add GPS coordinates of the wonderful places you fly over, please? Those of us with the new Flight Simulator could replay the flight and put in practice what we learn from you.
Regardless, thank you! Keep up the good work!
Thanks!
And that's an interesting idea... maybe for future I can share the flight plan waypoints more clearly
Really cool video. When you mount your go pro's to someonelse's airplane, what are some methods that work best? Do you use the sticker? Does it come off easy? Duct tape?
Wow. Even all the way down here in Australia, one day I can see myself in Alaska, with Beaver or without Beaver. But with Beaver would be better.
One of my favorite things about float flying is watching the wake suddenly stop as the plane lifts off. I don't know why.
Bush pilots and truck drivers: need a handy map pointer? Grab a cable tie out of the stash…😏
Very cool
How many people does it take to fly a beaver? Apparently 3.....
Uhhh... not sure if sarcastic or joking (insert squinting Futurama meme here) - but it was one student, one instructor handling the aircraft specific things, and one instructor who is a local area expert basically training all of us. (there was also a 4th person, an other student essentially, as Warwick the camera operator is also a pilot and was keen to learn.)
Did I miss the explanation of why you guys are using flaps during the cruise phase? Seems counterintuitive but im sure there's a reason for it
If you missed the previous episodes about the initial Beaver training, then yes, you missed that :)
The link to the playlist for the whole series is in the cards and description.
I wonder why there's tangling strings here and there on the mighty Beaver!? 🤔
It's because we need lines loose and ready to grab quickly for docking / beaching.
They can't be tied up and take a while to get free
- they also really don't have much to get tangled on when flying.
Tremendous
That’s the thing about flying. You are always too busy checking traffic, weather, instruments, and navigation to enjoy it.
But we still love it :)
Hey, Steve! When are you going to reveal the colors on your RV?
I did so at AirVenture / Osh22 (images can be seen on the Flight Chops instagram) and I also teased it at the end of the most recent video. :)
@@FlightChops
Thanks, Steve.
No fair teasing, but I'll take a peek anyway.
Happy landings.
Hi I want to ask you question I have FAA ppl Ir , do you have faa in Canada 🇨🇦 ,
Wow!!
is that an untethered warp a flappin?
Why does your instructor play with the mixture so frequently? Does it take a lot of active management in the Beaver or something?
If you want best power and efficiency, it sure does.
@@FlightChops Interesting, thanks!
You mentioned “after run-up”. How do you go about performing engine run ups on straight floats with no breaking? Low time student pilot asking from the right seat of my dads 182 on floats.
You float in circles while doing the run ups
We cover all of this in the earlier episodes of the series :)
Playlist link in the cards and description
I’m curious what kind of pistol is in the bag lol
me too :P
@6:54. Why are you still dragging flaps at this altitude?
Previous episodes in the series explain the basics of Beaver flying - link to playlist in description and cards
what is the song at 6:50?

If he's had three engine failures and walked away from all of them, he's obviously doing a few things right
