- Wallingford (Bypass) Level Crossing, Wallingford, Oxfordshire
Date filmed: 07/12/2019
Route: Cholsey & Wallingford Railway (CWR)
- Between Cholsey and Wallingford Stations
Location: A4130 Bosley Way
Trains:
CWR Diesel Locomotives (Santa Special) - 1:38
Activation starts at 1:14
A very large half barrier level crossing on a very busy single-carriageway road, filmed in operation during a running day of the Cholsey & Wallingford Railway's Santa Specials.
Both half barriers have supporter arms, and there are wigwags on a traffic island in the middle of the road. There are also two LED pedestrian lights which remain steady for the entire closure sequence until the barriers raise. There are four alarms here, one of which is an E2S A100 alarm, which unfortunately doesn't work, and the other three alarms sound very tired and squeaky, and two are rather faulty. Trains can be seen coming up the line from both directions before the crossing activates.

My mate was on that train! I love this area, am so glad to live there.
This railway had a nickname it was called the Bunk
Amazing Video!! Love all those alarms!
Thank you! They're all over the place here in terms of the sounds they produce, but on this occasion I did get something that kind-of worked as a whole combination.
Great video and crossing!
Thanks! Much appreciated! This is definitely an excellent crossing! 😁
Cholsey resident here! Railway used like 3 times a year, so that's why it's such bad condition, and the line was bought by cholsey wallingford railway in the late 90s early 2000s and they dont have the funding to maintain these.
Sorry, it's used a LOT more than three times a year (apart from 2020 when we couldn't open owing to Covid and building works going on at the other end). I would also take issue with the phrase "bad condition" although more volunteers to help would always be welcome.
Crossing is also maintained by the county council, not the railway.
Great video
Thanks 😁
A very neat installation of a crossing with an island in the middle. I only know of two in the UK, but islands at a crossing is quite common in America
This certainly is a very nice set-up, and I hear it is common in america too. Others that have a similar set-up in the UK include Newhaven Town L/C, Sunningdale L/C, and Hull (Walton Street) L/C
UK Level Crossings & Trains Channel Sleaford East Level Crossing has a Island in the middle aswell
@@OwenR10 Lowestoft has too.
That alarm sounds like it's dying
imagine a level crossing on a motorway
It's not, it's an A road, and it doesnt cause much disturbance since the trains only cross a couple times a year.
@@gemth9853 bro said if one time there was a crossing on a motorway. He meant what if it happened
The alarms are a-bit better then the last video you did on this crossing.
This was my first time visiting this crossing. You may be thinking of another channel's videos
What alarms are those
They're Yodalarm YO3's. At the time, one was an E2S A100 alarm (shown at the start)
That alarm sounds more like a fire alarm. Also great video and crossing
Thanks! These alarms do have quite a unique sound to them!
