  • For the past few weeks I've been bouncing off ebay and reselling... its time to change that.
    I'm making a few changes to my bay store... I've chopped about 50 listings off it and had a similar cull to the death pile.
    fresh start right.
    my inspiration... the resell summit. I'll let you know my takeaways

    Great video as always Ian. One of the real gems of the community. Motivation can be hard at times but you got to keep powering through, just remember the reasons for doing this, extra income, not just for you but for the family.. it's also very fun!!

    Great video - your toy and game knowledge always impresses me. I'm a part timer and still new in the game, only 18 months and I love it. I think you nailed it when you said that this is a hobby for you. There's nothing wrong with scaling back your work for a short or a long time. Life is more than money. Source when you are in the mood, list when you have time available, reduce your expectations of yourself. A full time job and a family is plenty for anyone, add Ebay commitments on top and it's a lot.

    Great video. Keep the contents coming. I feel how it affects you in a normal every day way and it is the drive that we need. i know i dont sell a lot on e bay, but i can guarantee it is quality that i always sell, and i must admit only had a couple of issues arise, but when it has been a negative it always makes me think there are a few people out there who also you cant trust but that his the chance you take well done mate and keep that drive moving forward

    Me, like a number of others (part time) reseller are having problems with ebay. I have a buyer claim not to have received an item that they received item 30th JAN. And gave me positive feedback on this item and there is Evri footage of item being delivered !! ?? Ebay are treating their sellers very poorly which is why some of us are fed up.

    • @MasterofPieces
      @MasterofPieces  4 місяці тому +1

      I agree that support for sellers should be given more priority with ebay. Sounds like you've got a good case with plenty of evidence to resolve that dispute in your favour. I'd phone ebay and state your case

    • @marktrickett5081
      @marktrickett5081 4 місяці тому

      Also, if they've already given positive feedback, that can't change.

    I’m a part-time niche clothing seller, and motivation is something that I do struggle with at various times. I try to treat eBay as a consistent income whereas my variable seasonal work isn’t always, and I’ve made all of my processes the most efficient and suited to me as possible. Being able to pay for a holiday from money earned from eBay, then earning money on eBay whilst on holiday, is one of the biggest wins I find!

    • @MasterofPieces

    Hi Ian
    I have retired early and you have been a key person to motivate me to sell on eBay. I am asking you to keep going because you motivate others and that should be enough to motivate you to continue! Myself and my friend, what’s your show every week and I literally copy the stuff you do! Don’t lose hope and don’t stop doing what you do it can’t just be me that so looks forward to seeing you every week. With love Hope and faith, Liz

    What motivates me Ian is the fact that one day I might need to go full time. My problem if I went from a 250 listing to to a 1000 one would be storage. I just don’t have the space to increase my inventory 3-4 times. Also sourcing especially out of the car boot season.

    • @MasterofPieces
      @MasterofPieces  4 місяці тому

      What makes you think you might have to go full time??.. is it job security. Agree it makes a nice safety blanket for sure

  • @ruudvanbrown
    @ruudvanbrown 4 місяці тому +1

    I totally agree with a lot of what you said in this video. I have a full time job which pays the mortgage and bills so there is no financial imperative to keep making money from reselling. All my ebay profits go into a savings account for my 2 year old son (basically an Ebay trust fund) which is nice but not enough on its own to keep me going so it's important to sell things you enjoy as much as possible to keep the enjoyment. As you said, it's a hobby so it should be fun; it shouldn't feel like a second job!

    • @MasterofPieces
      @MasterofPieces  4 місяці тому

      Yep we're in the same boat. I do enjoy eBay, but recently there are things I've been enjoying more. I feel the grind of ebay knowing you need to feed it.

    I resell part time and all profits from it are used as deposable income, when i get a bit bored of it all i just take a break for a few weeks and the bug soon comes back, plus you start to miss that few extra £££ in the bank and thats normally all the motivation i need lol love the channel mate 👍

  • @aperture_priority

    I’m part time like you and I only need some of the funds to pay the bills .
    I motivate myself by trying to list something each day. Sometimes it’s 1 thing and sometimes it’s 30. I know I haven’t listed for the last 2 days so I will absolutely have to do something today or Saturday at the latest as I’ve slacked off this week as work has been tiring.
    I like to watch UA-camrs and that helps with motivation.
    When sales are slow I just have no motivation to list and can get really fed up.
    I enjoy reading my positive feedback so that’s another motivation to give good service

    As a university student I do some reselling on eBay of solely charity shop pickups, not even enough to even class as part-time lmao. Naturally I find myself in a very similar position to you a lot of the time in the sense that for me it is just a hobby that I love with the bonus that it brings some extra funds in, but I definitely have that mindset of if I don’t get sales for a while, it’s not the end of the world. Need to get on top of it but a struggle for me is definitely lacking that consistency in listing which the algorithm needs. But anyway, love the videos and keep up the great work with the content, honestly even if you made videos focused on sourcing games for your collection, personally I’d love those too!!

      @MasterofPieces  4 місяці тому +1

  • @ratchuk2023

    Hi Ian. Thanks for the video. Really enjoyed it as always.
    I’m just like you, I do it part time for the fun and save the money too. I find my motivation comes from doing it alongside my girlfriend. We source together but run completely separate otherwise and it’s good to bounce stuff off each other and learn from each others mistakes and successes. I’d look for a similar reseller or two and set up a WhatsApp group where you can bounce stuff off each other. I don’t do social media (aside from UA-cam) and think this would keep you motivated and accountable.
    If it’s any consolation, I think motivation is partly down to the time of year. Months of dark evenings, rubbish weather and random eBay buyers testing patience. I’ve struggled too but can feel the tide turning. Take care

  • @chris_sharp18
    @chris_sharp18 4 місяці тому +1

    Something to keep in mind is that a larger store doesn’t always equate to more sales, I typically have approx 50 active listings with approx 100 sales per month, high quality listings of in demand items that sell for a consistent price is the way to go 😌

    • @MasterofPieces
      @MasterofPieces  4 місяці тому

  • @Planet_Passey
    @Planet_Passey 4 місяці тому +1

    As a part-timer myself, I can honestly say I don't have a straight answer for motivation when it comes to eBay and UA-cam even. The accountability aspect is in my full time job and making sure that's all going fine. eBay and UA-cam I treat as hobbies and will allocate whatever spare time I have to then in and around family matters, exercise and car-related antics. I do try to list 3-4 items a day but when eBay is throwing a wobbly then I do lose a bit of motivation as I feel the effort I'm putting in just isn't being acknowledged/rewarded. But, I guess these things do fluctuate like many things so taking the rough with the smooth is something I've grown used to.

    Not a pro-reseller by any means, but your channel has been a real inspiration to me; you’ve drawn my attention to certain toys and brands to look out for that I didn’t know about before, and that’s generated a nice bit of extra cash to put in the family holiday fund (which given how tight finances are at the moment makes a big difference to our ability to take our two boys out for treat days) and it was through you that I learnt about Royal Mail Drop and go service and as my other half says that was a ‘total game changer’. Separately you appreciate the Tony Hawks soundtracks as much as I do, so I’m grateful to you for that too! One tip/trick which might help is to set yourself a daily but very very low achievable goal - like I will list ONE item per day. If you feel like going beyond that, great, if not then you’ve hit your goal each day and can go and do something else like play video games. See Matt D’Avella video on never missing more than one day and James Clear of Atomic Habits on the Two Minute Rule

    Motivation for me as part time is to have a few nice holidays a year. However reselling is starting to become a bigger part of my life. Just today I gave notice at work that I want to go down to 3 days a week. Primarily for health reasons but also to focus on my eBay business. I've gone from scratch last Feb to 75k turnover in the 23/24 financial year. Eventually want to go full time but want a bit of a safety net first

    I am Now transitioning into Part Time Reselling because i feel i have gained enough knowledge from the two years experimenting.
    My objective this year is to source as much as i can and be more consistent.
    My Accountability is the factor that i have an opportunity to build a good life with Reselling.
    Long term goal is to get an actual home but I'm unsure how long that will take because i don't drive so very limited to what i can do.
    But i have two feet and two hands so i should be able to make it work

    You’ve talked about your current passion and enthusiasm for building your game collection, as well as a lack of goals leading to a lack of motivation. Wouldn’t it be possible to combine the two? Use the reselling with the aim of adding particular ‘grails’ to your personal collection? Gives you something to aim for. You could even put a self-imposed challenge element on it - many game collecting channels do.

    Hi Ian I'm a reseller here in Western Australia but am from Wales myself. I'm a lot like you I run a business and work full time so I don't really do it for the money any money I earn from it I usually just spend on concert, music and transformers. Totally your fault you brought up my old love of transformers lol. Then you intr9duced me to neck deep so that's 2 I blame you for. Anyway when I go out sourcing like you I usually take a day off in the week as by the weekend everything has been picked dry and I usually focus on things that interest me which keeps my interest up on doing this whole ebay thing. So like you I concentrate on toys, a lot, football and rugby jerseys and just anything unusual that peeks my interest. If I was just out looking for items for money I don't think it would interest me and I'd get bored. I don't pick anywhere near as many items a week as you do some weeks I'll pick up 5 items other weeks 15 to 20 and I usually just casually throw them up there as I go. EBay's been a bit of a shit lately I had a few cancellations because items were damaged in a box and now they've limited my account at the moment. I jave tried to get it lifted but they're not having it at the moment. So I've had to slow down a bit as I can only store so much. Love your vids mate would love to come sourcing with you next time im home regards Neil

    Maybe try whatnot?
    Great community and lots of banter.
    I would also recommend changing your instagram as I’ve replied to a few of your stories but says invitation sent … maybe I’m not cool enough 😂

      I don't really have enough stock for whatnot... and I'd struggle to pack everything afterwards. Seeing everyone doing well on it tho makes you want to try it out!!. Not seen you insta messages come though, when you send them?

    Why do you need to be accountable. It’s a hobby for you. Thinking to much about it I think.

      Because recently I've pretty much stopped listing. I love the sourcing and im racking up things to sell but if I'm not selling then what's the point of sourcing.... can't just do the one half of the hobby. actually maybe theres something in that... could use the sourcing as carrot to list... I dunno

      @@MasterofPieces yeah I get that. I’ve done reselling part time for over 30 years along working full time. I Have at times went away from it for few months even a couple of years because the enjoyment had gone. but got back into it couple of years ago and now I make more money part time than my ft job. That’s even after the tax man gets his cut. Like you, I don’t need to do it but I enjoy it at moment few Sundays ago I drove to Bolton from Scotland 4 hrs drive left at 1.30am but me and my mate just talk away. Bad news is I spent £35 😂😂😂😂 I had taken 500 with me was hoping to fill my campervan up. Good news that 35 had resale value of 650. But we just enjoyed trip down. May try it again when weather is better. Just do what makes you happy don’t put pressure on yourself.

    your accountablity is your hobby , you know how much money you need and what time you have , what you have to look at is whats your end goal for your collections , so set out a plan this is what i want for collection and this is how much i need and this is how long id like it to take with the current sales and stock i have , this will give you your motivation back because you have something to work towards and you will list and sell more because your doing it for something you enjoy , get yourself a pen and pad and set your plan out ,also you can use your yt and instagram to document it ,this will also keep you accountable

      Great point this... my collection has no structure and that could be a good focus. Also I think you're right... youtube and Instagram is my accountability... if I don't buy/sell I've got nothing to show. Great comment
