This clip shows two things: 1) Chico's unique style as a pianist (the way he used his right index finger), and 2) Harpo's virtuosity on one of his "secondary" instruments.

I remember seeing a clip where they dismantled a baby grand piano, removed the sounding board, and Harpo appeared to play it like a harp. Of course, a real harp had been interchanged with the sounding board.

Love the way Chico almost cracks up towards the end. Also a beautiful acknowledgement of their childhood, as Minnie only had enough money to send Chico for piano lessons. He was indeed expected to teach his younger siblings. He never really got around to it, with Harpo playing largely by ear. I will never ever get tired of this clip.

I read a different version some years ago. It was Harpo who got the piano lessons, no more than a half dozen or so. Chico then got interested in the instrument, and taught himself to play; eventually getting good enough to hire himself out to bars and bordellos. When his schedule was overloaded, he would send Harpo to cover. They looked so much alike, no one knew the difference.
While Chico stuck primarily with the piano, Harpo taught himself to play a variety of instruments. His grandmother's harp was his favorite.

      **REALITY CHECK**
We need to look to *OURSELVES* for the real reason why it's long gone. Beginning in the 1960's, comics offered us clean comedy and *WE DIDN'T WANT IT ANY MORE*!! We wanted the dirty stuff. So, "new" comics like Moms Mabley & Buddy Hackett (and later, Rodney Dangerfield) supplied the market. It's been that way ever since...

This is the best and truest type of entertainment - sincere, simple and funny. These were times when radio, film, and eventually television were uncharted territory. It was safe and enchanted millions of people and especially the young. Unfortunately, we can never bring it back, but I believe that we should preserve what we do have as much as possible for present and future generations as examples and role models that we sadly lack today. Now it seems to be about the increasingly ignorant passing this along to the next generation of poisoned minds. Not just the media, but ethics, morals, faith, and it goes on and on. I personally love ProgRock because of it's creativeness and imagination, harmony, beauty, and musical skills. I have amassed an ever growing library of this genre of music and video to play for people. There are movies and TV shows as well. I want this to last by passing quality along to others.

Chico when very young played piano in a bordello. After he decided to leave he got Harpo the job. Harpo wrote about it in his autobiography, Harpo Speaks.
Another fact about Harpo Marx that may surprise people is that he spied on the Soviet Union for the united states, I think that was during WW2, but I could be wrong about when he did it.
Another Marx who was even more remarkable was Zeppo Marx, and obviously not for his films. He was a famous agent for Hollywood, but where he really shined was inventing things. He made the first watch that checked heart rate. He also invented the stabilization system for the atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Also, KEN I AM absolutely FULL AWARE, AS YOU DO KNOW I AM, of your entire very, very sad sorry comment is PURELY OF YOU JUST FULLY MOCKING YOUR, AND EVERY PERSON'S CREATORS, AND OF YAHOSHUA HAVEN TOOK ALL THINGS JUST FOR YOU KEN, AS WELL FOR ME AND FOR EACH AND EVERY PERSON IN THE ELOHIM' ENTIRE CREATED WORLD. As EVERYBODY KNOWS how SO VERY MUCH Barbra is very OUTSPOKEN--DO YOU REALLY THINK SHE WOULD NOT BE GIVEN TESTIMONIES OF ALL THINGS SHE RECEIVED BY THE RUACH HOKADESH--THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVEN TO HER FROM YAHOSHUA? NOT BE TELLING THE WORLD OF HOW SHE CAME TO ACCEPT HER MESSIAH--CHRIST--ANOINTED ONE PROMISED TO HER AND OTHE 'NATIONS/GENTILES'? As well ALL THROUGHOUT MY ENTIRE LIFE
Yahoshua has always SENT TO ME, FOR ME SO MANY TIMES HIS Angels of which SOME I HAVE FELT BRUSH MY DRESS AS EACH ONE WAS PASSING BEHIND ME. 2 other OCCASIONS I have seen 1 of HIS Angels AS BOTH TIMES THE ANGEL WAS THE VERY EXACT SAME ONE AS THERE WAS NOT 1 THING DIFFERENT OF THAT ANGEL OF HIS I SAW 2 TIMES---A YEAR APART. 2 other SEPARATE OCCASIONS 2 different persons was shown HIS Angels HE HAD SENT TO, FOR ME, A lady saw 1 of HIS Angels standing RIGHT UP VERY CLOSE TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY BODY. When she was in High-School her teenaged friends were always told by their Mothers when asked if could go to the movie theatre AND ANY SCHOOL EVENTS at night, their Mothers ALL OF THE GIRLS WERE EACH TOLD THEY COULD NOT GO. THEN EACH MOTHER WOULD ASK IF OUR MOTHER WAS GOING, AND WHEN THEY WERE TOLD OF SHE WILL BE, THEN AND ONLY THEN EACH MOTHER WOULD TELL THEIR DAUGHTER/S THEY CAN GO ONLY BEING AS MY MOtHER WAS GOING TO BE WITH THEM. I have yet to ever known an adult who never would act their own age was a grown-up. Also, Very obvious you were born either 1980 or from since then as you were not at all taught TO HAVE ANY GOOD MANNERS. ALSO, MY MAMA WORKED BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL EVERYDAY SINCE SHE WAS 10 YEARS OLD TO HELP HER DADDY AND MOM, AND SO THAT HER LITTLE SIBLINGS COULD HAVE TOYS, LOTS OF TOYS AS SHE THOUGHT ALL CHILDREN SHOULD HAVE. AND NO, SHE WAS NOT TOLD TO NOR WAS EVEN NICELY, VERY LOVINGLY, CARINGLY ASKED OF TO SO CAN HELP THE FAMILY AS MY BEST GOD GAVE TO US GRAND-DAD AND GRAND-MA WERE ALWAYS EXTREMELY POOR BUT HAD THE BIGGEST HEART FOR ALL OF THEIR CHILDREN AND THEIR CHILDREN'S FRIENDS INTO THEIR ADULT-HOOD AS THEY HAFD FOR EVERY ONE OF THEIR GRAND-CHILDREN AND THEIR FRIENDS. HER WAYS HAD NOT BEEN OVER-LOOKED AND NOT BEEN NOT SEEN BY ELOHIM. WELL, BUT THEN SHE WAS BORN OF BEING AS SHE WA TO HER LAST BREATH AND LAST THOUGHT. I do not know what you call the Nw Testament? IN MY BIBLE, NO NOT ONCE ANYWHERE DOES YAHOSHUA LIE. I HAVE NOTHING TO GAIN BY TELLING ANY UN-TRUTHS WHEREAS YOU HAVE SO MUCH TO LOSE BY NOT BELIEVING. AND I DOI KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT AS THE OTHER ONE---WELL BY THE HOLY SPIRIT I DO KNOW HE IS WHERE HE CHOSE TO SPEND ALL ETERNITY---HE IS SO VERY MOST DEFINITELY IN HELL., JUST AS I HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO KNOW OF SOME OF MY LOVED ONES ACCEPTED YAHUSHUA AND WAS TAKEN TO HEAVEN AS HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN GIVEN TO ME 'DREAMS' IN THE BIBLICAL SENSE ABOUT, OF AND FOR MANY PEOPLE IN MY LIFE OR HAD ANY CONNECTIONS TO ME IN-DIRECTLY EVEN. An immensely talented family, which I grew up watching and laughing at. These fellas were the blueprint for today's humour, it's just that today's comics don't know that the stand on the shoulders of these giants. Two generations have now grown up not knowing who the Marx brothers were, as they are never shown. Mind you, they don't know who Laurel and Hardy were either. Tragic.
