      N C, I would rather take my chances with driver-less cars than with human driven cars. The number of car traffic deaths hasn't been under 30.000 per year since 1945 in the US, I am pretty sure driver-less cars can do better.

      Fawkzzz you're completely disregarding the fact that THE POLICE THEMSELVES are saying a human wouldn't have prevented it, because it was a reckless victim by not looking at their surroundings?!

    • @m-yday
      @m-yday 6 років тому +10

      Fawkzzz you’re acting just like the people before cars themselves. “These people are too lazy to walk/cycle/ride a horse!”
      Washing machines: “These people are too lazy to wash their own clothes!”
      Self-driving cars are not ready to be on their own yet. There should’ve been a overseer in the car! I don’t know if there was or not, but there should have been one. If there was one, as Trevor noted, why didn’t he stop it? More people are killed daily by human error than in the entire history of these cars.

    • @pvaz
      @pvaz 6 років тому +16

      Fawkzzz once the systems are improved they should reduce deaths by a lot. Hardware doesn’t get distracted or sleepy. It can malfunction but those can be detected and the driver alerted to bring the car in for repairs. It’s early days still. It’s much more responsible to analyze the events and improve the system to prevent similar situations then just blame it.

      so you saying that people do go past a speed limit and cause accidents as well. yes the car is at fault for the speed limit thing remember it when you go past a speed limit because you didn't see the sign or you just ignored it. Driverless cars are like a child's brain they need more refinement.

    If you've followed up on the story, the pedestrian basically jaywalked straight into the car. And indeed the people who blame autonomous cars are fools, how many people just died in a car crash today by other drivers? How many of those crashes were because of extreme stupidity an negligence?

    • @gimmethegepgun
      @gimmethegepgun 6 років тому +22

      Statistically, based on last year, approximately 100 people died today in car crashes in the US.

    • @2008MrsKim
      @2008MrsKim 6 років тому +14

      Still, the person in the car should have been paying attention. She was run over and no brakes were even applied because the person in the car didn't know what had happened, it wasn't until they saw footage from the camera that showed what exactly happened.. Got it ?

    • @EricLing64
      @EricLing64 6 років тому +114

      Did you follow the story at all?
      "Police have viewed footage from two of the vehicle’s cameras, one facing forward toward the street, and the other inside the car facing the driver. Based on the footage, Moir said that the driver had little time to react. “The driver said it was like a flash, the person walked out in front of them,” she said. “His first alert to the collision was the sound of the collision.”
      She added, “It’s very clear it would have been difficult to avoid this collision in any kind of mode [autonomous or human-driven] based on how she came from the shadows right into the roadway.”"
      That description by the Tempe Police Chief sounds like this was nearly the equivalent of insurance scammers or suicidal people jumping in front of a moving car. But more likely just a distracted pedestrian jaywalking. Would you like to walk into moving traffic without any warning and try to blame a driver for not braking in time for you?

      Because people are getting killed by drivers..it's okay if a driverless cars kills? Autonomous driving should be preventing these problems and not be a part of it.

    • @EricLing64
      @EricLing64 6 років тому +74

      Again, did you completely skip out on the details of the victim jaywalking into active traffic in a way that neither automotive nor human control could have stopped in time?
      Do you think cars themselves can stop in say 5 ft when going 38 mph? Do you even drive?

      What the heck are you talking about? Did you even watch the video? Do you even know what comedy is? Do you even know what my comment meant? I guess not.
      But let me illustrate it for you.
      Trevor is talking about the car accident where people cannot go and blame UBER for the dead of the pedestrian. People made the car. People conditioned the car; people programmed the car to be driven humanlessly.
      If you are in this channel, The Daily Show, you know that the way these people provide facts is by using comedy. That what they do. Use comedy while giving the news. Got that?
      Then Trevor go on to say about his mom giving him directions on how to drive, and my comment is exactly what Trevor's mom had told him. I'm just repeating the joke that made me laugh.
      If you don't understand a comment, ask... don't be an askhole.

    The simple truth of it is that these things are safer than having a human behind the wheel. They are not perfect, nothing is but they are able to do things people are not. No more drunk drivers, no more falling asleep behind the wheel, no more screwing with music or reaching for something. The simple fact is that even if any of you had been behind the wheel of this car and it not been automatic this person would still be dead so not the cars fault.

    My issue with driverless vehicles is not the fact that the human element is virtually removed from operation, but that it doesn't necessarily address some of the *other* issues with cars, such as having many of them with one or two people taking up space on streets, complicating things for emergency vehicles, delivery trucks, and public transportation. That said, I *really* hope that these issues can be mitigated in a manner similar to CBTC for rail systems.

    Another time last year, I increased my speed by 5 mph every time she said I was driving too fast without saying a word. She said, "OK, I won't say anything else," and I slowed down.

    I absolutely agree with Trevor, the blame IS on the guy whose JOB is was to prevent this tragedy.
    At the same time, I have to admit that is probably a VERY hard job - staying ALERT when it's all giong so well. The longer the car handled with no questionable tactics, you begin to trust. So:
    1: How long is a standard shift (no pun) for the test driver? And how long had he been on duty?
    2: What is his explanation and is their any camera on the tester? (COULD he have been playing Candy Crush?)
    3: Did the engineers learn anything IMPORTANT from this,?
    4: Was it preventable if the right simulation had been done?
    You can't make an omelet without yada yada, but you CAN minimize the collateral - and civilian - damage by keeping fresh eyes, ears and minds on the problems - and never accepting 'good enough' as good enough.

      Greetings from Germany. even our Media already informed us, that the woman would be dead even if a human had driven the Car.
      Autonomous Test-cars already have more "Eyes" to work with, then a normal car packed with Humans. Cameras, Laserscanner, etc. to observe the sourroundings of the Car....and they are faster to decide how to react. That all....and the woman is still dead. Police said that it would have been hard to prevent that for a human driver too.
      Possibly there was NO chance to prevent her death.

    I’ve been driving a 53’ tractor-trailer since 2009. I know I would not feel safe driving anywhere near a driverless semi, even with a driver behind the wheel.
    1, It brings your guard down to think it’ll do what it’s supposed to do. So, your reaction time isn’t there, in case the computer screws up.
    2, Common curtesy is out the window.
    Say you’re coming up to a 4 way stop, with you and three other vehicles at the same time? Who goes first?
    And when there’s a pedestrian looking to cross that intersection, you think the car cares? 3, City streets are deadly. You have to be extra careful of pedestrians all the time and the majority of those streets weren’t made for 18wheel semi-trailers. You have to take up two lanes to make those tight turns, while timing it with traffic and the light AND pedestrians to pull it off.
    4) I drove trucks with auto breaking that sense a car slowing down in front of you and I can tell you, they aren’t 100% fool proof. They can cause rear ended accidents by stopping too quick and because that driverless truck ain’t looking for a way out, but straight ahead and it’ll stop way to fast in bad road conditions, when a professional truck driver will anticipate this knowing whether or not they can safely take the lane next to them.
    There are way too many variables that driverless vehicles can NOT do safely like a human being aware of their surroundings can, let alone like a professional driver.
    You also forgot to mention the other driverless vehicles that ran red lights.

    • @DavidGuild
      @DavidGuild 6 років тому

      *Jack Jammen* On (2), that's not true. If the car is properly designed it cares far more than any human would. I've seen test footage of Google's car being so deferential to pedestrians that it wouldn't move at all. Another time it was at a 4-way stop, it had the right-of-way, and it wouldn't go because there was a bicyclist who had stopped but was doing that back-and-forth thing to stay upright and the car wasn't sure if he was about to cut in front. Because humans _don't_ follow the rules, and the people who program the car made sure the car can deal with that.

    But I see your point.

  • @madnessbydesign1415
    @madnessbydesign1415 5 років тому +1

    The problem with blaming the human in the car is that he was basically a passenger, as the whole point was to let the auto-pilot system work. No one blames the passenger for not taking over in a normal accident. The human in the car was supposed to let the car do its thing unless something was obviously going wrong, but there wasn't enough time to see that something was going wrong, then act in time to stop it.
    While it's fine to say that human drivers also kill, that misses the point: We're being asked to trust a system to control millions of vehicles simultaneously - that can be hacked. Terrorists around the world are licking their lips as they dream of creating traffic grid-locks, sending busses into public gatherings, cars off of bridges, and delivery drones and flying taxis into buildings. They won't need to come here, so your travel ban will be meaningless. They won't need planes to crash into things, they'll just need a 12 year-old with a computer to use our own vehicles against us. That's the real danger in trusting these automated systems. But hey, I'm sure Washington is hard at work making sure that we'll all be safe... as always.

    In Trevor's word, the moment you step on the break cars stop like magic. In the real world, if someone jumps in front of a moving car chances are even breaking that person will be hit.

    As a former pro driver (cabs, buses, trailers) I know that every workday contains at least one totally unexpected situation. 25 years, You do the maths. Hard to imagine that young skilled programmers, though good at their specialities, may foresee all those factors. Drunks, bikers, deers, goats, cow herds and else. Not to mention other car drivers.

    Two different makers of driverless cars have come right out and said (as a marketing positive for the cars!) that the cars are programed to prioritize the needs of the rider over the general population. So if stopping suddenly or swerving to avoid a person will cause the owner of the car injury the car doesn't do it. Of course the part they don't say in their sales pitch is that a driverless car cannot tell the difference between a six year old in the middle of the road and a cardboard box. They aren't programed to make moral distinctions regarding human life. As for everyone saying "she was jaywalking!" Yeah that's a $50 fine, not a death sentence. If a human driver hits a pedestrian under ANY circumstances the driver is at fault and faces criminal penalties.

    As someone that knows how basic technology works, my fist instinct is to *ALWAYS* blame the user. 9/10 times, the user will have caused technology to break.
    I'm not surprised the pedestrian was jaywalking. I'm not surprised the backup human driver was playing candycrush (I know it was joke, shut up), I'm not surprised human stupidity got someone killed.
    The only good thing that will come out of this backlash, is that cars will be better equipped to handle jaywalkers. Which is great news for me, cause I don't want to have to stop jaywalking just because machines don't know how to make up for my lateness/rush.

    Trevor, I had actually been discussing/ showing videos of self driving cats with my students and my first thought when I heard the report was, what about the guy behind the wheel. Also, my mom is the same way!!! Uhh, I wish I could blind folks her so I could drive in peace.

      Dr.Leonard Church yes they do, there whole bottom line is they will save countless lives and be 100% more efficient then human drivers where have you been under a rock! Or you just the lost the counter argument "they save lives" and are now resorting to they "don't have to be perfect." Pathetic..

      transylvanian you failed to realize the point of the whole A/V model the companies are pitching which is they will save lives not take them. You claim their is statistical evidence but failed to provide your sources of the so called facts that you claim to know. Ooh wait do you expect me to take your word for it. They are suppose to be better than drivers from the start the public or the American people are not Ginny pigs and the roads are not testing grounds this person did not have to die and it's a tragedy that could have been prevented by not having this so called A/V that is yet not so driverless because they still need a driver behind the wheel, that in it self is a defeating the purpose of the technology and a defeating argument with no real substance because the person behind the wheel will still get blame for the actions of a vehicle! Which makes no sense.

    Some people don't seem to understand technology and its limits. A car with a variety of sensors can do things a human can't like look in more than one direction simultaneously. A car is not superman though and cannot see through an obstruction like a bush, sign, another car, etc. to notice a person about to step out onto the street. While it is tragic someone got hit, the same thing happens to deer all the time and everyone can accept that its an accident and isn't the driver's fault. If you're driving and nothing is in front of you and then suddenly something steps in front of you it doesn't matter how fast your or the car hits the brakes the car will sometimes hit the deer, person, bike, child, other car...

    This is 10 times funnier because my Haitian mom does the same thing, which is why I hate driving her anywhere. Mom, I've been driving for more than a decade now, and I've never gotten a ticket. You've had a ticket. Everyone in my family has gotten a ticket except for me. Why do you not trust me? Lol! We've made progress in getting her to admit she's being ridiculous but she can't help herself.
