Well it becomes necessary especially if you factor in cruisers like Star Destroyers, Vaders Executor or even the Death Star. No matter the scale UCS ships like that simply can't follow the same scaling as a regular speeder, small starship
@@BAUFmanBricks the progression seems to be about 31.2 * ln( L ) - 32, where L is length in metres. This would only make the scale for an ISD 1:198 or about 8 metres long! If we use a power scale instead of about 13.5 * sqrt( L ) then the ISD would be 1:542 making it only about 3m long. This might be better. A 3 metre lego ship would still be huge, but to be real, so were the ISDs.
Exactly the kind of scale discussion I like to see! I’m personally a big fan of everything being closer to the 1/45th scale, but completely understand the reasoning behind the curve you mention, especially in terms of playability.
And technically speaking, yes a linear 1/45 scale is the most correct answer. I just don’t have the time, money, and space to accomplish all the builds I want haha
The UCS playscale you have chosen is honestly perfect and I fully agree with your reasoning behind it. Your models complement my diorama collection perfectly without taking up too much space as regular Lego UCS sets would.
I tend to like my models on the bigger side, but I do really like the way yours all look good side by side, even when they're not exactly scaled the same. It's certainly good for displaying bigger ships, without needing a ton of space. There's really no wrong answer to the scale question. Everyone's going to have different ideas about what looks "right" to them.
I totally get it. A sliding scale for something between UCS and playscale, which tries to incorporate the best of both build perspectives, is absolutely the right way to go. I know people will argue "everything should be the same scale" or "everything should be 1:42", but that is prohibitively expensive. Plus, as you get that large, it is harder to make the Lego builds strong enough. Bravo!
This makes so much sense. I had Kylo Ren’s tie fighter but I never really liked it that much because I found it way too big to be a single seated fighter. It was to unbelievably big compared to say the millennium falcon or the resistance transport.
Same with most jedi starfighters and speeder bikes I just can't buy any set based around those because it's closer to action figure scale at the size lego does them
Great video covering all the different scales. As long as the bigger ships are bigger, they'll all look great together. All of your models look AWESOME!!!
Completely agree that these look great. Also I agree with your reasons for scaling them this way. I'd personally love to see a video on that location moc. As well as any others you may do
I like this a lot, another point is size to 'what can this moc actually do' ratio. Like the USC Slave 1 while amazing holds one minifigure and has a single rotating wing feature, and that's basically it outside of a few smaller hatches and whatnot. That's all it can do for such a massive amount of pieces and space it takes up, while smaller Slave 1s they've made since then can do the exact same thing for a fraction of the price and space
It’ll be a while before I get to prequel ships - although I feel like there are a ton of them out there. Ive seen some mods of the most recent lego set that probably line up in this scale or are very close
@@BAUFmanBricks your mocs are incredible and your videos as well, it's like you do a hard core review of your own builds and it is awesome haha. If it passes your test then I am confident I would be happy to build it as well.
In terms of the Millennium Falcon at least, as long as you can fit 4 people in the cockpit and that cockpit is accurately scaled to the rest of the ship then its minifig scale.
I've been a 2bricks fan for a few years now (got hooked after getting the instructions for his Mantis Stinger) and the term I adopted for his more detailed yet playscaled models was Ultimate Playscale or Playscale Plus. I got hooked on his designs for exactly the reason you give: you get as much detail, the ships "feel" the right size without taking up too much of my so limited display space, and you can just more easily put together a whole scene with buildings and ships because you suddenly needs less room to do so. So far I've only gotten your x wing, but I got very similar vibes from it (although those click-locking wings are also *chef's kiss*). Now I'm wondering if other people also use such a mathematical approach (the parabolic curve for scaling down for diminishing returns on size increase but still to have returns) to scaling their ships.
I’m a 2Bricks fan as well! Great scaled MOCs and he showed me it was possible to showcase and make instructions for my sets. I do play pretty loose with my scale, so don’t think I’m some mathematician haha. I keep the math real simple, just use the biggest dimension to find the scale (usually the length). The Falcon and the xwing really set the scale for me, now I am cleaning up the playscale sets I convert them unto the scale. Alot of it is an eye test first
Now build an ISD on that curve lol But this is a great discussion and your scale works brilliantly! Great looking MOCs and great play value, the best of both worlds.
Haha ya I have had multiple people ask about ISDs, and no they still would be room filling. However, light cruisers, Gonzanti cruisers, and the Tantive are potentially in reach now
All of my own MOCs are what i would call 100% interactable, which actually puts them at a larger scale than UCS. But those are more for personal enjoyment, not for display per se. Your system truly is what LEGO ought to have been doing from the getgo. I love how well your models play off each other, always look like they belong together. I really want to see what a shipyard at this scale system would look like On that note, any plans to do the Outrider?
It’ll be a while but Id love to do an Imperial base (shipyard) or maybe a small portion of Yavin base. I’m working my way through the all my favorite OT ships, Id probably do the Ebon Hawk before Outrider as I know it more
Well even at this shrinking scale a star destroyer still fills up a room and isn’t reasonably feasible. However, this does open up the opportunity for a Gazanti Cruiser being achievable
Definitely going to build a few of your MOCS; the X-Wing, U-Wing and Shuttle especially. Do you have the parts lists for these but without the parts used from the original sets as I have 75301, 75155 & 75302 already so just want to order the extra parts for each of those, rather than end up buying those parts I already have again.
Yes, Rebrickable is awesome because there is a “Compare” link at the bottom of the page for my MOCs that are modifications and it shows a breakdown of what pieces are shared and which pieces are needed
i also always go for the UCS playscale, trying my best for the model to be accurate, minifig scale and playable! So far ive been doing land vehicles, my first was AAT, which turned out a bit wonky with the proportions but ive made it so it could fit all 4 droids it should!
@@BAUFmanBricks you're welcome! It was great to see a breakdown of how your scaling works, I honestly didn't think the scaling was off, even though the larger ships are progressively getting sized down relative to the smaller ships. They still read as roughly the right size and I think that's a really smart way of going about things in order to save on bricks. Super excited for your future builds already!
I personnaly consider that 5 bricks high = 2 meters high = 6 bricks long = 4,8 cm. In that way, I use those measures to create my mocs. In that way, 4,8 cm / 200 cm -> approx. 1/42 scale. For example, an X-Wing which is 12-13 meters longs would be (12-13*6)/2= 36-39 bricks.
Ya, I think that’s a good argument. I acknowledge that 1/45 is about as close as you can squeeze the scale and I am trying to get it as small as possible and still be believable
@@BAUFmanBricks I agree with you. The key is to keep it consistant. Keep doing your "UCS playscale" ships and vehicules, they are amazing, I really love your channel and "point of view" :) !
My proposal for this "UCS Playscale" would be to use the longest dimension to plug into a simple equation (in meters): Scale = 30 + Dimension This would result in the following scales: 1/39 scale - Tie Fighter 9m tall 1/43 scale - X wing 13m long 1/54 scale - U wing 24m long 1/64 scale - Millennium Falcon 34m long Alternatively using: Scale = 15 + 2*Dim would be an option if you want to cluster the ships closer in size to each other and to prevent some of the larger ships from being unwieldy.
That’s an interesting equation to use. Although I’d say it’s essential for the Tie and X-wing to be on the same scale. I kinda based the scale on the size of the Lego Falcon being my starting point, then I shrunk the x-wing to 1/48 to look better paired with it. I am also playing around with the scale loosely and willing to break it when the eye-test doesn’t pass - I think my next build is gonna be a scale breaker but Ill explain more when that comes
Love the builds! Your millennium falcon model in this video is different from the one featured on your rebricklable page. Do you plan to release updated instructions?
The instructions are up to date, I make brief mention of it in the description. Everything is basically the same, the mandibles were updated and improved when I went through the instructions process
I've never heard anyone say minifigure scale is between 1/25 and 1/45. The range I'm familiar with is 1/40 to 1/45. I wonder if maybe the 1/40 comes from the depth of the minifigure (thickness of torso).... Either way 1/25 is ridiculous as minifigure scale. The height of a figure is way more important than the width, so I'm glad to see you favoring the 1/45. I, personally, have always been a little obsessed with scaling so it's fun to watch someone else talk about it extensively too. 🤣
Haha ya everybody keeps saying that and Star Destroyers. Star destroyers would still be room filling and a Death Star would still be impossibly enormous
Those are still too huge to realistically build them even in 1/300 scale. However this might help bring Gonzanti cruisers and Tantive IV into buildable range
@@BAUFmanBricks Thanks been looking over these this morning, I’ve been very dissatisfied with the Falcon in particular and want to do your mod. I am new to MOCs but been trying to design a smaller-than-UCS Executor in the spirit of set 75055. Scale and reasonable closeness to proportions are definitely proving to be tricky lol, so I appreciate the compactness you strive for!
Very soon, I hope to be releasing a new ship and video at the end of this week. All the ships I released in the last 6 months were built slowly over the past 2-3 years. I’ll keep building but they won’t release as fast as these first seven ships
Tell me, please, what do you think? Take the length, height and width of the transport from the universe and divide all these values by 45? (Sorry for bad English, Google translator helped). I don't understand why the new 75347 isn't in minifigure scale?
All the examples I used in my video I took the length of the in Universe and divided it by the length of the lego set. But you need to make sure you are on the same measuring scale - I use inches. So for example, the X-wing is 44ft long, first I need to convert it to inches (x12) which is 528in.then I divide that by 45 if I want that scale.
I haven’t crunched the numbers but I think those ships break the scale. Even with a shrinking scale they will take up the better portion of an entire room. They at least need to fit other ships like Ties, shuttles, and a Tantive inside them. We’ll see as time goes on just how large I end up going with my ships
The graph is very clever, however i don't get how do you decide the specific scale of each model. How do you know what precise scale to use for each model?
The curved graph is not precise, I am using it very loosely. It is based on the size of ship in Star wars but I am not crunching exact numbers for that graph. The Millennium Falcon is 114ft and the xwing is 43ft, and those two ships basically set the scale. I then looked at how the scale of other ships fit in between them. There are a lot of discrepancies though, for example the Imperial shuttle is 66ft which would make is smaller than the Razor Crest, BUT it’s large verticality could arguably make it larger than the Crest. Very soon I think I am going to make a video about a ship that kinda breaks that scale and I’ll explain why
I build digitally so I build all my starfighters at about 1 : 37. Been trying to figure out how I want to scale freighters and other simmilarly sized ships cause they are so huge at 1 : 37. If I do them at 1 : 42 then the UCS Falcon would be to scale but they are still very large. TBH with digital its the time sink rather then the parts sink thats the issue so its hard to pick.
Got a new request - could you try a better minifig scale snow speeder. The typical ones are oversized, and that leaves the 4+ version which is not bad but not good either.
@@BAUFmanBricks Awesome, can’t wait! Working on a “Master Builder Series”-style Echo Base MOC and looking for a smaller but more accurate snow speeder and thought of you. Put aside the “Super Star Destroyer” idea, very difficult to do without the scale LEGO did the UCS and get any useful space.
@@BAUFmanBricks Can’t wait to see both, as a fellow AFOL who gets into the scale/aesthetic questions of design your work really speaks to me. Still on tap to make some of your builds, particularly the X-Wing!
thank you! and I will let you in on a little secret, I plan to be updating my x-wing. I utilized a few new pieces and will be releasing it in a month or so. Anyone who has already bought the plans will get the updated one
I feel like there’s just too many options haha. I have trouble keeping up with star wars minifigs and sets, I can’t handle another big series, it’ll lead to too many new figures and sets ill want to get haha
I'd say the perfect minifig scale is 1 : 41⅔. It would make a minifigure represent a 160 to 173 cm tall person. The global average height is 162 cm for women and 175 cm for men. That scale results in 3 studs per meter, so it makes planning models very easy (and it even makes minifig scale Minecraft blocks possible)
I understand that argument. I’m a 6’5” American who likes to round up the average height to 6’ for simplicity sake and it better represents me in a way haha. I realize 1/45 is the max scale representation by rounding
@@BAUFmanBricks of course 1 : 45 is still very close to 1 : 41⅔, but then you lose the benefit of having 3 studs per meter. Alternatively, 1 : 38.1 would be a great scale for someone who prefers the imperial system (star wars reference not intended), making 3 studs equal 3 feet or 1 yard.
your use of a parabolic curve of scale is absolute genius, i wish lego utilized something like this because their scale is all over the place

@@BAUFmanBricks Ahhh I see, thank you that explains it well 😊
I build digitally so I build all my starfighters at about 1 : 37.
Oh yeah, I know building in Studio is a very time consuming when it’s a large set and the step ordering becomes increasingly difficult too
@@BAUFmanBricks Often I don't even bother to make instructions for my builds but it's really nice having unlimited parts in any color I want!
Yep! I have leaned heavily on digital building for my TIE and B-wing because I had to do a lot of experimentation
Got a new request - could you try a better minifig scale snow speeder. The typical ones are oversized, and that leaves the 4+ version which is not bad but not good either.
It’s very funny you mention that because I got something coming and it’s way smaller than any other speeder, but accurate
Oh wait, you meant the rebel snowspeeder, i have an imperial speeder coming soon. BUT a rebel snowspeeder is something I plan to do as well
@@BAUFmanBricks Can’t wait to see both, as a fellow AFOL who gets into the scale/aesthetic questions of design your work really speaks to me. Still on tap to make some of your builds, particularly the X-Wing!
thank you! and I will let you in on a little secret, I plan to be updating my x-wing. I utilized a few new pieces and will be releasing it in a month or so. Anyone who has already bought the plans will get the updated one
You should do other builds that aren’t the SW Lego IP
Maybe in the distant future. SW is something I am dialed in on because I know it so well and it is so very vast with content
Have you seen X-MEN '97? Do you think the LEGO X-JET could be improved?
I have not, and I stick pretty much only to Star Wars sets. The only Super Hero set I own is the playscale Batman Tumbler
@@BAUFmanBricks Hey I have that too! Thanks for replying, really recommend it.
I feel like there’s just too many options haha. I have trouble keeping up with star wars minifigs and sets, I can’t handle another big series, it’ll lead to too many new figures and sets ill want to get haha
Would love a ywing in your scale
It’s definitely on my short list
At first glance the Falcon is way too small 3:31
You get all the Star Wars points
Midi is the only way
you are definitely saving the most space, time, and money
You're scale, that's my answer
