Echt angenehm!
I very much enjoyed this performance. Fashion forward tempos and valveless brass. A true Adagio and then the violence of its middle section ... as if prisoners were being forced marched through a peaceful village, with the woodwind quartet of "prisoners" wailing in despair. But all ends happily enough. Especially the raucous finale! Haydn, "one of the three or four greatest composers to have lived."
The clean and precise, sometimes almost staccato, phrasing throughout is an interesting approach, often bringing out the good humor in the piece, and always maintaining momentum. The inner movements are the quickest I have ever heard. What may be Haydn's best presto finale is in good hands here.
Haydn’s music had huge impact across Europe in his own time, and much of his music can be quite spiky and in-your-face; the biggest mistake a conductor can make today is to try to smooth it over and try for a sort of suave Mozartian elegance and balance.
I haven't heard this one before, but that's not unusual, there's so much I haven't heard yet. Beethoven must've been actively inspired by the 1st set! And here Mr. Hengelbrock coaxes quite easily a sparkling performance from the NDR orchestra, which has always stood for high quality every time I've heard it. ¡Enhorabuena, sen~ores! JAT
May I suggest, every single day, come to UA-cam and search “Haydn symphony number XX” and enter a random number between 1 and 104. You will literally never run out of glories to hear, because when you finish the symphonies, move on to the piano sonatas, the piano trios, the quartets. And then start over. You’ll never run out of wonderful music.

Hengelbrock knocks and roughs up old Haydn magnificently. Bravo!
Not really - that is what he wrote - adapt it as you will.

Bet the 2nd horn player gave some of his notes away to someone else in the finale.... Those are octave jumps in eighth notes... yikes!
das klingt absolut "genormt" und "deutsch" ... leider :/
