What I love most about your reviews is you have plenty of interesting footage, it's not just you sitting in your room recording yourself talking. Also everything you say is quick and straight to the point. I'm buying this lens now!
Bao Nguyen Yes "quick and straight to the point" with footage. A lot of other reviewers put footage that does not really show what the issues to expect.
+Bao Nguyen THIS!!! i hate people who upload stupid videos showing the box and the lens and blabber about nothing. i can find pictures of the lens and specs on the manufacturer's website! i want to see the damn thing in action! thanks for making this video. i'm going to pick one up for the sony e mount
Sounds to me like he lives in one of those places with crazy snow build up, and the lens must have dropped down far enough to where he'd never find it. Pretty funny story, hard to imagine it happening in Georgia though haha.
The video quality this thing produces is sick! I was looking to get this lens purely for budget astrophotography, but it’s basically a jack of all trades
I had to pause the video after you said you found it in the snow after several days. I already own this lens, but for some reason I keep watching the few reviews available about it. I LOVE that you lost it in the snow and that it still worked for you. That experience lends itself to the quality of Canon L lenses - and I assume high-level Nikon lenses, though I have zero experience with them. This review was amazing, especially with the left to right comparisons of different focal lengths. Next time, you might want to show a comparison of the lens' image quality at different apertures, to show vignetting and corner sharpness quality. Please note: - This is an amazing lens for astrophotography. - The mustache distortion and vignetting can be corrected if you download the lens profile for Lightroom. -Getting used to the zoomed Live-View focus box will help anyone finding themselves frustrated with manual focusing. This is probably my favorite review of this lens on UA-cam. Keep up the good work!
+David Ouellette (Guerrilla Gallivanter) I'm glad I'm not the only one that felt a little sick after he mentioned losing it in snow and waiting for it to melt out. :/
I dropped mine in snow as well, but for a much shorter period of time and was a little skeptical that it would function properly again. Good to know it's that resilient, as I take it in the mountains with me where things tend to get a little beat up. Awesome review!
MonkeyButt117FTW It does, but it was designed for full frame. Rokinon offers the 12mm f2.0 for those who need a wide angle for crop which works much better for crop sensors than this full frame lens would
***** You're missing the point. Any lens that works on full frame will work on crop, but doesn't mean you should buy it for crop. That's why crop specific lenses exist that have a smaller image circle that are optimized to project to smaller sensors.
As other commenters have noted, this lens seems like a great choioce for landscape photography and video, but with the unusual distortion pattern (as exhibited in the video with the fence at the 3:29 mark) probably not a good choice at all for architecture, or any application where straight lines are critical. While they can be corrected in post with most modern editors, that "double wave" pattern you see along the top of the fence would be tough to correct properly and get it exactly right. Great price on the lens though, and for the right application, a real steal.
Huh, my only experience with UWA lenses are this 14mm VDSLR and the Voigtlander 15mm, both of them had that mustache distortion and I kinda took it for granted: I thought all wide angle lens cameras had it and all photographers used the Light Room or other post processing to straighten it out. Is this not the case with the Nikon and Cannon wide angle lenses?
John Kang - I currently use a Tokina 12 - 24 zoom, which has noticable distortion at 12mm - as they all do when that wide - but it drops off to basically zero by the time you get to 24mm. But even at 12mm, the distortion is nowhere near as dramatic as exhibited by this 14mm Rokinon.
nkerns True, Rokinon 14mm f2.8 has more distortion but very little problem with chromatic aberration, as wide tokina lenses have. From those two problems, I personally prefer dealing with distortion in a software.
Thanks, I just bought the lens and am very happy with it. I added an online correction profile for LR and now it is about perfect! It is great for special dramatic effects, interiors & landscapes. I really like the sharpness, build quality and contrast.
David Di Franco Oh, hi David! lol Were you considering this lens for your Canon T4i? I might pick one up for my future FX camera. The lack of auto focus isn't a big bother for me.
This lens is not made for fast manual focusing. It is more for still shots and astro-photography shooting where you don't use your focus. Let me rephrase that, you set your focus and shoot your picture then refocus if you have to.
Having to manually focus doesn’t bother me but you need to have good vision imgs.love/RokinonLens or wear your glasses/contacts. I use this for weather, architecture, landscapes, family portraits, and sometimes even birth photography. I need more equipment for astrophotography but that is on my list.
your review is awesome. easy to understand & you really put your effort in doing this video to helps other to getting know better about the lens. keep it up bro!
Just bought mine. Don't let some negative comments about this lens for photography. Just look at the flickr page with this lens and you will see some absolutely stunning pin sharp images. Some of the best images I have ever seen have been taken with this lens. If you are into landscape or astral photography, then this lens is a no-brainer.
Thanks for nice rewiev, not too much talk and lots of sample footage about the product. That neighborhood looks also really nice, is it somewhere from UStates?
I just ordered this lens today. I hope I don't have to deal with a bad copy because it seems that a fair amount of people had to return it and replace with another copy because there were issues with the first one they got. I got it from B&H as a Black Friday deal for $260 with a $20 drop/spill 2 year plan.
Looks sharp. It would have been good to see you walking towards houses - to see verticals distort... and also pan up and down to see centre distortion show up more. That might be useful. Thanks for a good video.
The barrel distortion kind of scarred me a way from getting this. I'd be using it for real estate and that would be a bit of a pain to straighten out. I imagine it being geared towards video because of the no click aperture ring. Good video!
...but you said in the video that you will put in the description some liks to download the full resolution pictures took with the lens :( i don't see the links. the fact is that i am a real estate photographer using a 16-35 mm from Canon and i find it sometimes very hard to photograph the bathrooms and other snall rooms and i was thinking to purchase a wider lens. i would be very glad to get some footage frome you as an example. Thank you
Thanks a lot Ken--have you thought about shooting a short film with this lens? I think you have a great sense of timing and editing. I'm trying to decide between this and a 16mm 2.8
Good review and nice sample footage-considering getting this lens for my D600 (which I notice you were using). quick point; looks like you have a dust spot on your sensor (at approx 3 mins in the night sky). This is the problem with interchangeable lenses!
I'm about to buy this lens cause it looks killer in photography. But the feeling in video looks weird with that angle, except for skate videos maybe.. To me, that's more a lens for photography, and having a look to some astrophotography samples taken with this lens I'm hoping to have lots of fun with it for both astro and landscapes etc..
I like the review, thank you for doing it. Yours is the fourth I've watched on UA-cam, and probably the only one with any real information in it. Seriously considering the lens. I actually think the long throw in the focus rings are a positive feature of Rokinon lenses. Because they're manual lenses, I feel more comfortable purchasing, knowing that I'll really be able to fine tune the focus and have that extra play.
Thanks for sharing this video. I have this lens and found everything you said about it to be very true. Since I use it for filming I appreciate that you noted it was best used as a video lens. Again, thanks.
Nobody is talking about filters... Can we use ND filters on this ? I don't think so, the circular ones.. what about the square Cokin p series ones... How difficult or straightforward is it if you somehow can use filters?
On my copy I have to set the focus to 1m and then the objects that are 50m away are in tack sharp focus. Is it like this for everybody? I find this so weird.
I mainly use m43 cameras for photography and videography but recently got a used d600 (entering full frame mostly for photography) and wondered if you still have this camera/lens combo and if it served you well? The video does look fairly soft compared to the stills- wondered if this could even be used for vlogging (though on the heavy side of course)..? Thank you
Hi, my name is José, i´m from Colombia and I buy a Rokinon 14 mm for a Nikon D610 and I have a great problem because it only works in automatic (not manual) and when I put on F:22. I can use it on manual because it appears always ERROR. Can you help me?
is the vignetting correctable by using the to not be noticeable? I saw in your photos that the color corrected one still had a good bit of contrast/darkening around the edges, but I'm wasn't sure if that was personal preference from your editing.
This was the first and only copy you got? My question is regarding many reviews of people who were going through 2, 3 copies in order to get a good one. Is so bad like that, you were lucky with the first one? Many thanks.
Very nice video Ken, I was happy to see the FOV comparison. I'm looking for a good off brand (less expensive) wide angle prime lens for Milkyway Time Laps photography. ( 12mm to 16mm w/ f/2.8) Can you recommend some brands and/or site links? Thanks for your consideration, Steph
I would not buy this for the Nikon D7100-you need something wider like the Sigma 10-20mm or maybe Rokinon/Samyang do a wider lens due to the crop factor.
In another video by different UA-camr, it was recommended not to be used for video,b/c of manual focus. Do you agree or still think that it is good for video ?Thank you.
I have a canon rebel t3 and I'm into taking landscape photos and portraits. I'm trying to capture more background while shooting. The only concern I have is the zoom. Is this going to be the right lens? I need some feedback!
There is no zoom here. This is a 14mm prime lens, fixed focal length; this being a 14mm means it's within the range of wide focal and not telefocal. Since you are shooting with a t3, APS-C sensor, this is not going to act like a 14mm lens should. He's using a Nikon D600, which has a full frame sensor and behaves more as-to-expectation when compared to a 35mm frame. If you are wanting to grab wide angle shots on a prime lens you may want something with a smaller focal length - look at 5-8mm lens. By the time you move smaller than 14, the lens crops out full frame (if you use a 5mm lens on a 35mm camera you will see dead space since the lens doesn't expose the entire frame; this creates a tunneled exposure); but these lower fl lenses work (without waste) on smaller image sensors such as your C and give the effect of the slightly larger fl's on a larger format camera. For landscapes wider lens are great, so go wider. For portrait shooting.... on ANY body I wouldn't suggest this lens. The 35mm lens on a C-sensor is probably going to act more like 50 Natural on a full frame, this is a good combination for portraits. The wider the angle the more distance distortion you can get which is what gives images with these lenses a great 3D feel. When it comes to portraits you distort facial features badly with wide angle lens unless you are being very careful. Also, with your speed min at 2.8 on this lens you aren't going to get the appealing bokeh you'd want with a portrait shot. I hope this helps
Ken, you da man! Great, sharp review. Not a 40 minute long boring video on unnecessary detail. However it would be good if you also perhaps included a bit of pixel peeping, moustache distortion and vignetting examples. I like the background music as well, reminds me of Nujabes. I've just sorted out my D610 and Samyang 14mm (same as Rokinon) and Tamron 28-75. Let the Full Frame adventures begin :)

I have a D600 and looking for this to do some interior architectural work; so would have loved to see some indoor perspective shots. But thanks.
Thank you!! This was exactly what I needed. The full size pictures on flickr were very helpful.
Unbelievable story with the snow. Very nice review. Thank you very much for your time and effort.

Which lenses was this video filmed on, you have some wonderful retro looking bokeh at 0:42 and 1:01
Great lens, I would recommend installing a chip to warn when it is focused, it is very difficult to focus with the lens....
Good review! I appreciate the comparison shots. Hrlps to.put the view in perspective.

+LapeVideos 310bucks on ebay for e-mount! canon ef is even only 280 or so...not sure about other systems
Thanks man, appreciate the info - it helped me pull the trigger and buy one.

I got one too :D

Thank you so much. Only video on youtube that compares focal length.
You sold me on the lens. I'll be buying it for my Sony E-mount.
How do you focus at night for night time photography? Can you put ND & polarize lenses in front?
Put it on infinity mode it puts everything in focus automatically

Whats the music playing in the background 2:57?

awesome I've always wanted a full manual lens might even buy it is mean 300 for a wide angle c'mom

Hmm I don't know whether to get the Rokinon 14mm or Sigma 10mm-20mm
I know this is for canon but what if I use this on a sony? If I get an adapter, will my sony camera get all of the lens functions?
Depends on the adapter you're using.
I'm at the point of buying this lens now but I'm not sure if I should get the sony or canon version

Great vid! Thanks for being very informative and NOT one of those wacky reviewers! haha
Hola, esto es compatible con una canon 7D?, o es que tengo que comprar un adaptador?, te agradezco la respuesta. Saludos
Did u do any color grading to the wide angle video .. pls let me know thanks
What are your thoughts on using this on a DX format camera ? I am looking for a new wide angle lens for my D7100.
that's actually a really beautiful lens, regardless of price! I would use it for astrophotography and milkyway time-lapses, would that be a good lens?
I heard there is an issue with the coating on the front element,is this true?
If one can afford the roughly equivalent Nikon, would you recommend buying the Nikon over the Rokinon? Thank you (your video was very helpful).
Hmmmm. Considering this one for my D7100.
I would not buy this for the Nikon D7100-you need something wider like the Sigma 10-20mm or maybe Rokinon/Samyang do a wider lens due to the crop factor.
is there a way to correct distortion of the wide angle lens when shooting film?
what do you use to edit the audio? i have a rode video mic pro and i dont get the clear audio .
thanks
Who is the music by? Nice review by the way.
So how is it edge to edge? how bad is it in comparison with the middle of frame? Thank you.
What’s your opinion on the lens with vs. without the AE chip?
im looking for a decent wide angle lens for a good price. Which one would you recommend the rokinon 14mm or canon 10-18mm? I am open to any opinions.
Would this fit ok on my Mark3? Without too much distortion or vignette?
man cool review does it works with Nikon D3000 series
Shoot this lens on my Sony A7... it's a beast for real estate interiors *and* astrophotography if you're into that.
In another video by different UA-camr, it was recommended not to be used for video,b/c of manual focus. Do you agree or still think that it is good for video ?Thank you.
great review. I think it's a killer video lens, thanx man
Guys. a 2.8 lens, is it softer in the middle? My dji phantom 3 pro have a f2.8 lens and i think its soft in the middle
I wanaa the best and cheep glide cam , hope you reveiw a video about that
What is the grip mounted at the bottom of his camera?
Does it have vignetting on a crop sensor ? I have a canon t3i and im planning on buying that lens thanks :)

How nice, found this kind of lens on Konstantinos Vasilakakos Photography on Fb..I subscribed to you too :)
Thanks for the review 👍
Would it be a good lense to use on a stabilizer for video? How do you think it compared to the Sigma 17-50mm?
Am planning to buy nikon d5200.. Which lens is best for nikon d5200.. Am confused
i have a d5100 and i'm debating between this lens and the tokina 11-16mm lens. which one do you think is better?
+Vong Yang which one did you buy?

Hi where can we get filter holder for this lens? i want to buy this lens for landscape
+darwin andres Lee FIlters offers specialized filter holders for this lens under a product name called SW150
Hi There
Have you used this for astrophotographer ? and if so is it any good ?
Thank's
Excellent review!
Would this lens work for a Nikon D3300? And if so, should I get the version of the lens with the built-in AE chip or with no AE chip?

I need a good camera for getting amazing skateboarding upclose photos. would this be good for that?
