Great piece. I didn't know Halberstadt built a single seat fighter.

Von Richthofen scored six aerial victories flying Halberstadt fighters while the Albatros D.iii's were grounded to repair a strut problem.

I do believe at the time that Richthofen was flying this he was flying the Albatros D.II variant, but it was down with structural issues. the D.III didn't come into the war until late 1916 and didn't really start to become standard until 1917 by that time the Halberstadt D.II was woefully obsolete in comparison to Sopwith pups and Nieuport 17s.

Well, thank you Grey Wolf and 13ace. I wasn't aware that VonRichtofen flew any other aircraft besides the Albatross and Dr1.

Manfred flew the Halberstadt D.II Albatros D.II, D.III and D.V, then he flew the Fokker F.1 prototype and the Fokker DR.1, he passed away before the Fokker D.VII and D.VIIF could see service, he actually helped in development of that aircraft.

    Historical Machines,
Thanks for this rare look at the Halberstadt fighter-another feather in the cap of those faithful collectors and flyers in New Zealand!

I am afraid that the voices describing the aircraft ruin the video. If anyone is interested about the aircraft in particular, he can always search in books or browse the internet. Speech can be easily replaced with reading, while the sound of these jewels cannot be replaced with anything else.

Perhaps ruin it for you - not for everyone. There's a non-narrated version o the full video on our streaming platform at www.historicalmachines.tv
