The first story really touched me and it was great to hear a person care so much for someone who was a neighbor instead of a family member we expect. I hope the guy is still doing fine over the loss of his friend.
the story about the AIDS epidemic really hits. I love that you told it, it's a fear that so often is forgotten. To the Patsys of the world, I hope truly that we can build a world you would be proud of.
The true horror is a man dying of cancer. At home with no comfort measures. No wonder the caregiver lost it for awhile. What a terrible health care system we have.
I wish I could meet the writer of the first story, as well as "Dave". Those guys are two beautiful human beings. Those are the types of people I wish I had as friends. Also, the writer is so correct in pointing out the importance of mental health. It is every bit as important as physical health, and no one should be ashamed to need to seek help for it. I literally just spoke to my doctor about that very thing this morning.
The most horrific thing for me was the poor man who died of cancer at home unable to afford healthcare in the first story. Having seen my mum receive palliative care for lung cancer in an NHS hospital In the UK it saddens me to know people have to suffer pain. As usual your storytelling is second to none.
The USA has Medicaid which is free healthcare for all people living below the poverty line. Otherwise healthcare is mandatory to be given to employees who work in a business with over 10 people. It’s a myth that people can’t get healthcare in the US. Sure there might be anecdotal cases but you can say that about anywhere.
The AIDS story. At our college, we got to interview a panel of people, one was an EMT During the AIDS scare. She said there were so many medical staff who were afraid to touch a person who they thought had AIDs, afraid to be in the same room, afraid to administer care (because they didn’t know how it was spread). I can’t imagine how scary that era must of been for all involved.
That story about AIDS hit hard. I remember doing my internship at SF General Hospital & not being able to enter the hospital room of an AIDS patient at all. It was completely prohibited unless you were a doctor or nurse wearing PPE. I can still remember asking why the door was sealed off with HAZMAT markings all over it. I felt horrible once I found out what the end of that terrible disease looked like from a medical standpoint.
Re the HIV/AIDS story: if you want to learn more about how the US government deliberately ignored the HIV/AIDS health crisis check out the book and film titled "And The Band Played On." It's a heavy story but it's one that people need to learn.
Thanks for the recommend! I addvto that my own suggestion: For anyone who needs more of a narrative softball intro to the topic watch the movie or go see the play Rent. It's about new York Young LGBTQ and artists trying to survive and includes the story of a central character involved in the AIDS crisis back then. Really brings it to life what might otherwise be hard to relate to or even imagine.
I really liked “And The Band Played On.” I read it the summer of 1988 and it gave me great information and insight to the AIDS epidemic. Highly recommend it. Food for thought on an Easter morning.
My weekend is going to be a busy one, tomorrow my wife Stephanie and I are going shopping, then on Sunday we're going to her parents house, then we'll go to my sister Rachel and her husband's House.
Whoever wrote the first story- awesome human being. It is difficult to know exactly what to do to help someone. They did great. So sad about the guy and his friend. Dying in their 40s unable to afford treatment. HORRIBLE! Healthcare should be accessible and affordable for everyone.
Yeah that was so sad, dying because you can’t afford treatment. I’ve worked as a nurse at a cancer ward where we had several patients with palliative care. I can’t imagine going through that and also having to pay insane amounts of money for it, as if being ill isn’t enough. I really believe medical care should be a human right and not a class issue.
Your voice always soothes me. My long distance girlfriend went home after a few weeks of staying here on vacation. I've been fighting saddness pangs all day, but I can finally be calmed. Thank you for the amazing upload ❤
The story about the start of the AIDS epidemic is just heartbreaking. As a queer guy myself, I owe my life and freedom to the LGBTQ+ people who came before me. And the saddest thing is that one of the loneliest groups of people became even more isolated and no one did anything at that time.
No one did anything ? Are people not responsible for their own actions ? It or other peoples jobs to fix their problems for them ? Maybe they should have been more safe with their health for fuck’s sake.
*not jon, his husband, we share an account* I was born in 1983, and when I was about 5 my parents took me to a funeral for my mother's cousin or something. She had died from AIDS from a blood transfusion. I am now 39 and remember the somberness this day. Luckily it was never made to be a "gay disease" by my family.
As a mental health worker this is why I advocate for everyone to know great verbal skills to help with deescalation and understand everyone is going through something and compassion goes a long way.
Singulair also gave my husband horrific vasculitis at 32 years old. He still struggles against it today. I took it in high school and had sleep paralysis almost every night too.
As an asthmatic person, Singular almost made me end my own life, gave me ideations and hallucinations of terrible things. I was 12-15 yr old while on the medication. It should be off the shelves. I’m glad to be here still
that story about aids absolutely killed me off. i cannot imagine what it mustve been like for the lgbt community in the 70s/80s, especially after the series Its A Sin shed so much light on it for me. im lgbt myself and i feel so priveliged to ne living in the 21st century where its less acceptable to be so dismissive of such a horrifc disease
yeah, I very much put the pieces together. LGBT, NYC, late 70s/early 80s. I knew where it was going after hearing that. to hear a story from him about the early days of the AIDS epidemic is definitely sobering. It shows how much it put LGBT rights back.
I've seen that short muscular shadow in my step gran folks hallway once. I was sober and wide awake getting a midnight snack when i saw something and looked down the hallway. Theres a night light in the bathroom at the end of the hall and this shadow blocked it. I thought one of my nephews had woken up n the shadow was jus distorted but it vanished once i turned on the kitchen light which partially illuminates the hallway and when i checked everyone else was out cold and all doors and windows locked. Been spooky stuff going on and my mom and i have been discussing options. 👍

I had to watch my dad slowly wither away from the disease he had because he didn't want to go into the hospital or home. He wanted to stay at his house where he felt safe. So he had people go over a few times a week every week to check on him or bring him groceries. He dealt with this disease since birth and it took 58 years before he took his last breath. I lived with him for about 13 years and I watched his health slowly decline, so I kinda understand what Dave felt in the first story.
The asthma story is true. I was on that to help with asthma and my pulmonary doctor took me off it after being on it for a few years because she said it can have serious side effects.
My favorite uncle passed from aids in 1988. Things were still pretty bigoted in Missouri back then, my grandparents refused to admit what he truly died from, went to their Graves with the idea he died from something other than what it really was. Just sad, he died w/out ppl ever getting to know how good of a person he was bc of the stigma assoc w his lifestyle.
Story 4 was absolutely heartbreaking to hear. I'm a queer teen, and in a religious household (thankfully my parents are not homophobic) and it's so sad to hear how hard our community had to fight during the AIDS epidemic. Just to prove that it wasn't just a "gay thing" and that it was a vicious disease that didn't care who u were or who you slept with. You did amazing reading that story Joel

That's the Queer community for you. The world is cold to us so we make family among ourselves.
It was beautiful and very inspirational
Completely and totally agree. And the dude actually got help. Like a little compassion can go such a long way. 🥺🖤

As a New Yorker, the price of living here is a horror all by itself for us 😓
Ken, I can relate. I’m from So Cal and you can’t even take a step without it costing something
Id try being nice and caring, but, since you're a New Yorker "Get outta here! Im posting!"
As a fellow NYS citizen I feel you. Our state is run by a ton of morons
You should move to texas or Florida. Much better states for living in my opinion for lots of reasons
Not to mention the politicians running the city.

First Story was a nice change of pace. Nice to see someone with mental health issues/disabilities not villianized in one of these stories for once.
