  • Tom Volf’s MARIA BY CALLAS is the first film to tell the life story of the legendary Greek/American opera singer completely in her own words.
    Told through performances, TV interviews, home movies, family photographs, private letters and unpublished memoirs-nearly all of which have never been shown to the public-the film reveals the essence of an extraordinary woman who rose from humble beginnings in New York City to become a glamorous international superstar and one of the greatest artists of all time.
    Assembling the material for the film took director Volf four years of painstaking research, which included personal outreach to dozens of Callas’s closest friends and associates, who allowed him to share their personal memorabilia in the film. When recordings of Callas’s voice aren’t available, Joyce DiDonato, one of contemporary opera’s biggest stars, reads her words.

      @Oona Craig Actually I read an article in Vanity Fair years ago and it was stated factually that she was eight months pregnant living in switzerland and Onassis was coming to see her! She didn't want him to see her with the pregnancy weight so she had her doctor induce the labor! Her son was born but he was of a lower birth weight and died months later! It was concluded that her having induced the labor before full term, some babies are born overdue so only a good doctor, hers wasn't in my opinion, will induce labor for medical reasons! For years people thought he forced her to have an abortion and she was so angry with him for marrying Jackie and losing her son I think she wanted the world to believe that because she never corrected that rumor/lie whether she started it or not! I think she loved Onassis too much and she lost her child, her voice and a lot of her own self worth! But in the end it was all her own choice! Sad!!

    • @sotiriospapafragkou4422
      @sotiriospapafragkou4422 2 роки тому

      @Oona Craig 1. Onassis never divorced Jackie. 2. Rumors of Maria being pregnant and the child dying are way before Onassis married Jackie. 3. Those rumors are more than likely false as Maria couldn’t get pregnant for medical reasons. Her first husband confirms this in an interview.

    Maria is the closest thing to perfection that has existed on this planet. Her voice and power of performing are a phenomenon of nature. She can lift your spirit up and throw it down to Hades all in a second like a tornado, leaving your head in a daze after you have listened to her singing. God bless her soul, she was so sad.

    I can only hope that this is released to the public, to view around the globe, very soon after it's initial release in N.Y. and L.A. I'm very excited to see it! I absolutely adore Maria Callas as an artist and as a person. She passed away 10 years and 1 day before my birth; and every year, the day prior to my birthday, I quietly celebrate her life and thank my lucky stars that I'm fortunate enough to live in a time that affords me the chance to hear her sing. 🌟

    What a miracle was Maria Callas, an unbelievable opera voice! I’ve learned about Maria Callas when I was a little girl. My father used to mention her and her greatest voice of the world every time he heard her on the radio. Many years later, I came to America and could hear more of her great voice due to new technology. I miss her every time I listen to her, though I have never seen or met her. She had the perfect voice which continues to enchant our musical ears. Such a natural, magnificent voice!

    She was an International sensation but her greatest years/performances were at La Scala, Milan in the 1950`s. She was at the height of her powers in legendary productions that are now part of history and before the steady decline of opera as great art.

    Wow, they have never before seen footage of her Medea (0:36), Madama Butterfly (1:06), La Traviata (1:07), Norma (0:37, 1:10, 1:53), and Tosca (1:55). Cool. Also I always thought that the dress (1:36) she wore when she performed Casta Diva at the Palais Garnier in 1958 was purple for some reason.

      Rudolf Bing was an ass and a petty, petty man. He chased after her for nearly six years before getting her to the Met and offered her very little. His talk of production values, holding singers, directors and conductors accountable paled in comparison to her standards. He could have offered her something new to take on the Spring Tour but didn’t. And then he milked her dismissal for all that he could. Even hiring someone to yell “Brava Callas” to get the audience on the side of Leonie Rysanek. And how about the tactless comments about Beverly Sills? Piss on him!!

      To be fair to Bing, when the Met lost a booking of the Bolshoi Ballet (one of their lead dancers defected on the eve of the tour) rather than have his building dark for 2 weeks, he called Bill Graham who ran the Fillmore East who was, in his mind, his equivalent in the Rock world. Bing made Graham an offer to bring his acts to the Met. Graham brought The Who, Frank Zappa & The Grateful Dead into the Metropolitan Opera House
