  • What if you could find squash that store for 1 to over 2 years by just setting them on a counter or table in your house? Also what if they actually tasted good? I know, store-bought squash seldom taste good. Well here are varieties that can last for super long periods, give you food year round and get you through the hunger gap.

    I had a butternut last 18 months, just sitting on the counter. The heat in the house was 68 degrees.

    1:55 Sibley Squash (Cucurbita Maxima) , 3:42 Jarrahdale pumpkin (cucurbita maxima), 5:45 Hopi pale grey squash () , 8:19 Seminole Pumpkin (cucurbita moschata), great info, and also good extra info in the other comments! I live in the Northern FL panhandle and had someone give me a seminole pumpkin last week which was about twice the size of my head and they taste great, I didn't know the name of the species until you mentioned them here and i went searching and saw a picture of one grown locally that was the same as the one given to me... what are the odds?! :)

    there is only one problem with squash: they take a lot of room! one vined over to my neighbor and I told them since it grew on their side of the fence it would be theirs, but they did not want it - lucky me :)

    Be sure and look up J Landgraff _Landrace Gardening_ . You won't need to be so particular about keeping squash separate. He was trained as a chemist and looks at increasing genetic diversity of his crops by mixing it all and keeping what works for the next year, explaining many of the heirloom varieties have become 'thin like too little butter spread on too much toast' (Tolkien).

    I was able to purchase all of those seeds shown on this video last year for the exact reason as you. I recently turned one of my spare rooms into a grow room so beginning in mid February I will begin to start growing some of those squash that require the long growing season. Hopefully they will grow and produce very well.

    Great video. Another good variety is Cushaw (Cucurbita argyrosperma). The fruits grow huge and easily store for a year or more. Look them up if you're not familiar with the variety, I think you might like them.

    Is cross pollinating a really bad thing?

    • @HealthAndHomestead
      @HealthAndHomestead  Рік тому +2

      That depends. You may have a new variety that you love or don’t love. But the next generation will be different. So it could be good or bad depending on what you get. But if you are up for some interesting discoveries it could be fun. Blessings.

    Psalm 23
    King James Version
    23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
    2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
    3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
    4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
    5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
    6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord fo ever. Lord, please clear our families credit and prepare us for our country on our own property without renting before it is to late.

      Thank you, this is my fav part in Bible. I had my daughter memorize it when she was young/King James versión seems more poetic, yet real. We all need Jesus' peace, mercy,& courage, especially @ this time. May God bless you& yours too! 💟
