Johnny is the coolest fictional character imo and it’s not even close. I started guilty gear with strive and have gone back to xrd and xx and I have absolutely fallen in love with Johnny character and play style. This video is amazing btw. Thank you for all the amazing Johnny content
Glad you've got such a strong attachment to Johnny, it'll serve as a motivator to make your learning process enjoyable! While I started with Xrd, it was quite late in its lifetime, so getting good quality games in delay-based netcode was a hassle. I initially hadn't formed any attachment to one character while playing, but once I locked in Johnny and played his trials, he quickly became my #1 reason to play the game and enjoy the series! Also, thank you very much for the kind feedback, it's quite assuring to know people are enjoying my goofy clips, lmao
I think you covered everything that's important for a solid beginner gameplan, and you go straight to the point in a concise way, so you don't overwhelm beginners. As someone who picked up Johnny recently, I realized that better Johnny players would always sneak in a throw in their pressure, but I wasn't able to tell the best spots to do that, so your throw setup section was really helpful for me. Now my only real struggle is Zwei YRC. Since I can't do it properly, my pressure end as soon as I create some space from my oponnent, which let them escape. I can't make sense of the proper timing, I usually keep the momentum and end up going over my oponnent, not sure if it has anything to do with my spacing as well. I would appreciate if you have any tips on that. Overall, great guide my dude. Thank you for your content.
Thank you for the feedback, very kind. As for your Zwei YRC struggle, it sounds like a possible spacing issue. as a rule of thumb, if you're at the space to hit with the tip of f.S, 2S, 5H or 6H, you should be in the correct distance to use Zwei YRC. As far as timing goes, the YRC is done as Johnny is in the descending portion of his Zweihander jump arc. Make sure not to be too close to the ground as you YRC your descent, or you lose the option of attacking with an aerial normal like j.P. Hope this all helps!
The tips on the timing and spacing helped me make sense of it, I'm now getting YRC consistently, but I'm struggling to do it high enough to use the aerial options, it's just like you said. But that alone already helped a lot with mainteining pressure. The throw setups also helped me alot, j.P MC Throw is my favorite. Again, thank you my dude.
For zwei YRC, i mapped the two unused buttons to P+K, and S+H. This way the risk of getting IK is lessened, while you can still just hold down K, and then press the two buttons on top of it for fast zwei YRC.
nice, smart method! Personally, I have the two unused trigger buttons to the 3-button macro and the 4-button macro; One for RCing any other move and the other for Zwei YRC. This hasnt gotten me to IK accidentally once I got used to this layout, but I like your option as well.
haha, no problem! I do remember you asking for this and figured I'd help you and any other fella who wants to play Johnny almost as badly as I do by giving them a place to start.
Nice tutorial, very informative. If you make more of these (which I hope you do) consider investing in a better mic. Your current one is fine but it's a little...low quality ig. Not a huge thing just a nice touch to add quality.
Thanks for the suggestion! I have been meaning to upgrade/change my audio/recording setup, but haven't been able to decide on a good mic at a reasonable price.
man my standards for fgc guide videos must be abysmally low because literally the first thing I thought when this vid started was "hey this guy's voice is coming through really clearly, this guide will be easy to watch"
Definitely the place to start, yeah. That section is important for establishing the muscle memory/habit of mist cancelling normals as quickly as possible in each Mist Stance level. They're also useful for blockstrings once u start putting them together. Throw a coin in between some of these normals at the right spacing and you have yourself a monstrous blockstring that easily fills up the RISC gauge to cash it all out in a Throw combo!
Not a bad route by any means. I didnt add the j.d, 623K ender to the combo similar to this one at 1:25 because I wanted to introduce one-hit zwei later on in the video. I did however end up having the corner throw dustloop route w/ Zwei ender show up earlier than the intended chapter, sorta slipped through the cracks lmao
johnny players when rollback comes back to xrd....this will be the bible.

this character nakes my hands bleed
Coming here after playing strive Johnny, and yikes 😬, seems a lil more difficult in this game
nice
would you say that grinding out the strings from 2:20 to 3:14 is a good place for a beginner Johnny to start practicing?
