  • We ride the all-new 2021 Ducati Monster! Nearly 30 years after the first Monster rolled out of the Ducati factory in Borgo Panigale, Italy, the Monster comes out swinging with huge improvements.
The 2021 Monster is wholly modern, ditching its iconic steel-trellis frame in favor of a front frame design inspired by the Panigale V4 superbike. It is a controversial decision among Ducati fans. However, this new chassis design paves the way for a 40-pound weight reduction compared to the outgoing Monster 821.
Those chassis improvements make for a narrow motorcycle that betrays the 32.3-inch seat height. And for those on the shorter end of the spectrum, Ducati also offers a low seat (31.5 inches; $160) and a low seat and a suspension lowering kit (30.5 inches; $300). The riding position is comfortable enough for long days in the saddle, with a casual upright riding position. Still, it won't prevent you from getting your elbows out and having fun in the canyons, either.
Also new to the fold is the larger displacement 937cc Testastretta L-twin engine, producing a claimed 111 horsepower at 9250 rpm and 69 ft-lbs of torque at 6500 rpm. It's punchy, rev-happy, and fun in urban or canyon environments. It's also easy to ride, thanks to a huge amount of midrange power perfectly suited for the street. On the downside, it does run a little hot when in slow-paced environments.
Where the weight savings shines is with the handling. The new Monster is fun, nimble, and agile while remaining quite stable, thanks to its taut chassis. A non-adjustable 43mm fork and a spring-preload adjustable shock take care of suspension duties and do a great job, but adjustability would be appreciated at this price point. One huge improvement is the lock-to-lock steering sweep, which makes the new Monster even more maneuverable at low speeds.
As with nearly all Ducati models these days, a full suite of IMU-supported electronics is standard. To that end, the Monster features three throttle maps (Sport, Touring, and Urban), three-level cornering ABS, eight-level traction control, three-level wheelie control, launch control, and an up/down quickshifter. Unfortunately, cruise control is not offered.
Senior Editor Nic de Sena packed his bags and headed off to San Francisco, California, to see what the 2021 Ducati Monster is all about.

Picked mine up 2 weeks ago, funniest bike I’ve ever ridden, it truly disappears under you. Weighs nothing and handles like dream but the clutchless shifting and the ride modes sold me. They had this bike parked right between an 821 and a 1200 they both look dated next to it, once you climb in this bike even without riding it, you’ll quickly understand what they were aiming for, weight reduction and a slimmer ride.
I sold Ducati’s for years in Okc, none of em handle like this one, it truly disappears under you it’s like your flying or something, it wayyy smoother but it’s still got the Ducati pulse, the only thing I don’t like is the heat at a stoplight on a hot day, once up to speed it completely disappears. It will be of value in the colder months.
Between the weight savings, handling and increased horsepower and torque it’s no brainer! If you want a bike that weighs 40 pounds more, less torque, less horsepower, less rpm, and handles like a pig next to this one cause it has a trellis frame, by all means stay in the dark, but remember that’s how brands become stale, if you need a reminder or wake up call please put the 821 up against a ktm 890 or a speed twin and you’ll quickly see how outdated they are, with all the upgrades to the 937 and seeing it in person, I had to test ride one, I was there to buy a bmw and after the test ride I couldn’t bring myself to buy any other.
The first turn you take, the first accidental wheelie u bust, the first time you use the clutchless shifter or under shift a corner, you’ll come to love this bike.
The unbelievable part is, this bike is actually comfortable. If you’re on the fence don’t be, you’ll kick yourself for missing out on this bike, these tire kickers haven’t even rode one yet. They’re caught up on a dated frame that makes this bike slowest and worst handling in it’s category.
Go look at the availability of these things, they are flying off the shelves but the 821 and 1200’s are still available National wide. Form or function, u must choose but Personally I think the 937 has both.

I’d like to get one but hate to loose money on depreciation. I think I’ll stick to the 821 monster or go Japanese with the Kawasaki z900 with better reliability.

      Hey Todd,
That's a tough call without making a back-to-back comparison, but I can at least explore the subject from memory. To boil it all down quickly, I'd say that the KTM 890 Duke R sits firmly in the sporting end of the spectrum, as the 890 feels extremely nimble, light, and aggressive. It's a bike that thoroughly rewards someone who enjoys riding at what we call a "spirited" pace. Meanwhile, the Ducati Monster appears to be more versatile, offering an enjoyable bike at casual paces and plenty sporty out in the canyons. Importantly, it doesn't feel as pointed or aggressive, which I think a wider audience will appreciate.
      Take care!

Is this suitable for a novice rider?

    • @ultimatemotorcycling
      @ultimatemotorcycling  3 роки тому +2

      Hey The Iron Shepherd,
Great question and one that I think a lot of new riders will be interested in hearing about. I personally encourage new riders to build their skills on lower displacement, less powerful, and more affordable motorcycles before climbing the proverbial ladder to something like the Ducati Monster. Spending a season or two riding something more approachable for new riders will ensure that you're not overwhelmed with the sportiness that something like the Ducati Monster offers, once you make the leap.
I think it would be a great second bike. It might be especially appealing to riders bumping up from one of the many Japanese middleweights, getting something with more features, improved build quality, and much more performance.
      Hope this helps,
      - Nic

@@ultimatemotorcycling This Ducati has Urban mode which brings the HP down to 75 and changes the throttle response. It basically makes the bike an expensive Yamaha MT-07 which many start out on. I wouldn't suggest this for a teenager that just got a license because they probably wouldn't keep it in urban but a more mature rider starting out could get a lot out of this bike for years.

      Hey Lasse,
I'd love to do a comparison with the MT-09 and feel Yamaha has put a serious contender out into the market. Unfortunately, I haven't ridden the SP version with the upgraded suspension and cruise control.
      Take care!

1 HUGE problem why I'd NEVER pay money for that...that right side of the bike looks like plastic VOMIT!🤮 plastic pieces goin' here, there, every which way, big pieces, little pieces, sooo CONFUSING! Ducati is always worthy of better styling.

Lol the trellis frame is so dated, to heavy, to slow, and the handling is atrocious compared to the new model! Way smoother, more horsepower, more torque, skimmer look, wayyyy better handling and lighting. You put an 821 next to this it’s look like a pig
