Omigod! I am over the moon about the results of this competition! Cannot put into words how psyched I am right now! Thank you so much Josh! Your work has helped make me a better film-maker and I am so grateful! Great job everyone who submitted!
You guys def earned a visit and shot of whiskey too! (If you're of age of course) Keep writing those stories! Story is everything, it is the hardest thing to learn. Your sound design could have been better yes, your cinematography could have been better yes, your color grading sure...... But your story was the only one that had a genuine reaction of shock and surprise. You guys got me!! Bottle that up and sell it. Keep making that and always lean back into story when you get lost. It is the number one thing overlooked on UA-cam but it is the number one thing sought after in Hollywood. Very few and far between. So keep watching good material and feeding your brain with story rich content.
@Aidin Robbins did an awesome video based on sounddesign, - Sounds of the PNW - which you can watch with your eyes closed and still imagine the places without seeing them, just beause he put so much effort into sounddesign. The power of sound in that video is huge. In the BTS video he talks about stuff I've never even considered putting into my videos :D The kid is awesome :)
I know im asking the wrong place but does anyone know of a way to log back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid forgot my password. I would love any help you can offer me!
Detail that only probably Slavic speaking watchers noticed: At video #4 one of the last scenes was mobile phone with broken screen that shows that phone is still in call with "Ljubav". Translated to English, that means Love or rather Sweetheart in this context. I think that gives to whole video even more dramatic note and bitter aftertaste of potential loss that one could suffer from such accident.

I totally agree, man. I second this thought! I can't believe this guy doesn't have millions of subscribers already. Upset at myself for just now finding him.
It used to be Casey... Teaching the basics. when it all began. Then it was Andreas Ham, Peter Mckinnon, Ryan, Jon Olsson Vlogs, Jessie and all others for more advanced and subtle creativity that no one knows about. And now... Its You Josh!!! for learning things and motivation in a different way... Thank you for all this buddy. much love and respect!
Yeah I feel ya. It's only a matter of time before some of this talents get to direct big budget movies, so I'm hyped for the future! In the mean time, go watch Edgar Wright movies. His editing is quite similar to this!
I have watched Peter Mckinnon, JR Ali, Casey, etc. This channel is off the chain and very underrated. I wish I could spend 1 day learning from someone like you so I could continue with my dream. Your creativity, content, editing, film skills are awesome bro. Keep it up and go big. Never look back.
Even though you laughed at mine, Im SOOO happy I submitted it. Way out of my comfort zone and you've really exposed me to so much great content creators to look up to that are leaps and bounds over me. I was actually "creative." I scripted and created a story board instead of just shooting. Had a lot of fun and looking forward to the next contest!
Thanks for putting mine in the top 10 Josh! The fact that you thought it was from a short film is an awesome compliment. Sorry it was a bit longer than 30 secs. Great job everyone!.
Yours was 100% my favourite! It felt super visceral, especially the lead up to the gunfire starting. My only critique is I would have preferred a longer stretch of silence between the gunfire/fight and the character coming in the door. Obviously you had the time limit though
Nice to see a creative competition where the submissions and winners are amazing. I entered that Terminator trailer comp, the winner was...well...we don't need to go into that. It was an ingest. Nice one all, and nice one Josh for making this happen
Damn, that door scene was exceptionally good. No camera movement, No inheritly interesting objects at all. Just a stationary footage of a closed door. It reminded me of the works of Edgar Wright, because he uses every aspect of filmmaking when it's necessary and when it'll have an impact. He uses camera movements when it's needed, he uses sound effects when it's needed, he uses interesting objects, characters, clothes and scenery when it's needed, he uses focus and lighting to tell the story. And combines them with right amounts into a beautiful mixture.
Thanks man, appreciate the feedback. Glad you enjoyed it. It was fun adding a bunch of sounds into a seemingly boring doorway shot in the edit. If anything, limitations in filmmaking produce some of the best results.
4:32 Dialogue and monologue from old movies and recordings is very often used in electronic music. Psy Trance, Techno, Electro, a lot of artists use them and I suspect that guy likes that sort of music... Fan fact: It started out with psy trance artists using old audio recordings from lecturers and professors talking about psychedelic substances and mystic experiences, like Timothy Leary, Terence McKenna, John Lily...but it soon progressed to old movies and TV shows.
For number 6 one small criticism I had was that there was a clock ticking sound but the clock he has is digital. Just some minor detail, otherwise I thought the guy did a great job.
TIP: That "strobe camera flash" sound effect that you want is easy to find (3:00). (Reply with any questions, lots of instructions to follow. Let me know if it works for you.) Go to Walgreens, walk up to the camera dept. desk, and ask for a "USED disposable camera". Don't waste time with buying a new one. Get one that's USED and has no film left, they throw them out at this point anyway. It's free. Take the labeling/wrapping off of the case, open it up, and mess around with the gears until you get it to charge the flash. There's usually a small white gear on the side opposite the lens that's kind of hidden. If you rotate that until it stops, it should trick the mechanism into thinking you've loaded film and are ready for the next shot. Hold the small front button to charge the flash capacitor. BOOM. Instantly got half of the effect. Then add whatever clicking you want as well.
I think is cool from your side to encourage young people to be creative, positive and enthusiastic, to this what they do. It is helping them a lot, specially the recognition of that work they do. Respect from Ireland 😏
