- I’ve seen a lot of questions on this on comments on this channel, direct messages that I get from authors, in authors forums, so I am going to set the record straight on these three very different but very important technical aspects of your book. Your ISBN. Your Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN) and your copyright. I’ve done videos on each of these topics individually which I will link to above and down in the description.
First, let’s review for US-based authors where to go to get these items:

This video as well as other content that you've put out is very detailed and helpful. I also appreciate the fact that I can scroll through your comment section and most of the time if I have a question, it's already been asked and I can find your answer there. I shared your page with a few people that I know who are in the process of writing their books as a great resource for information. Thank you....
Hi Felicia, so glad I can help and thank you for sharing the channel!
I love how you simplify these areas. I’m learning as I go.
I'm so happy to help! I'm always nervous that I'm either not getting the concepts through clearly enough or that I'm over simplifying. So glad you are able to learn about these technical set up items. Definitely let me know if anything is still unclear about copyright, ISBNs, barcodes, etc. (or any other self-pub topic) and I can make a new video :)
what a goldmine of a video for we new authors. Glad to hear the correct sources for different functions on book identitication
Hi Judith, thank you for your kind words. Happy I can help!
M.K., this video is a vital resource for us authors! Thank you!
You're welcome! Glad it was so helpful for you ☺️ Best of luck with your book!
I'm an American living in Taiwan (in my 34th year here) - I assume the information relates to me as an American. Thank you again. Your calm, professional and upbeat voice and demeanor are so helpful. I look forward to your new videos and your interviews are great.
Hi Harvey, Yes as a US citizen your work is protected under US copyright. If you plan to stay in Taiwan permanently, you may look into their ISBN options to see if it would cost less. If it is unavailable or prohibitive then go with the US option.
I cannot thank you enough for sharing this clarifying information in such a concise and user-friendly way. I have subscribed and will be following you as I walk through the steps of self-publishing my first book. Dianne
So glad I can help! Best of luck with your book!
Great information! Best and most concise video on the technicalities of self publishing I’ve seen. Thank you; this really helped me set more realistic expectations for my publishing date.
So glad I could help, thank you for your kind words
Thank you for addressing these topics. There is so much conflicting information online. Especially in regard to ebooks. Some say no ISBN is needed because it is sold online. Others including Bowker seem to show that you need an ISBN for any format difference.
In my opinion, yes eBooks need ISBNs. Amazon KDP specifically says that "kindle books do not need ISBNs" but that is because they assign their ASIN. I always advocate for owning your ISBN so it can go anywhere. And to answer your other question, yes technically all different formats need their own ISBN. I did get an email from Amazon last week that they are moving to ePub so that is very good news :) Best of luck on your journey!
You got that right.
excellent presentation.
The number line is something you should look into for a future presentation. It is a tad off-subject but is in the same book designation area.
Thank you so very much. Clear and concise! Also, agreed, who wouldn't want to be in a library?! :)
Happy to help! Right??? Libraries are the best
Another phenomenal video educating us on this process. Much gratitude!!!

Your information is so helpful, and I can tell that you sincerely care and are interested in helping others. A big thanks from me. 🥰

Happy to help!!
Really good essential info for first time self-publishers. One question: If the bar code contains the price embedded within the actual code, as you seem to suggest, what happens when the book price changes as it often will? Or did I misunderstand that about bar codes? Ok, that's two questions, kind of. Oh, look, here's a third one (hey I'm on a roll): Has any of this info changed since you made this video 3 years ago? Like pricing (I remember when copyright registration was $10 -- good God I'm dating myself!). Thanks! BTW, I just liked and subscribed, so there's that. Now back to writing the brilliant opening of my new bestseller, let's see...ah yes, "It was a dark and stormy night...."
Yes, when you the author (or a publisher) permanently change the retail price it needs a new barcode if the fixed price is on the barcode. Sales which are limited time offers don't require a barcode change.
Invaluable advice without any wasted time. Thumbs up!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for making this video. It is very important to know and understand these numbers and what they are for. Your delivery was very clear and helpful.
You're welcome! Glad I could help!
Thanks for your time and sharing this info with others!
Happy to help and hopefully prevent some costly mistakes.
M.K., you are the bomb.com for posting this video. This was such a big help and a wealth of information.
Yay! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and that it was helpful :)
Thank you for making this video. I am a complete newb. I was wondering though, do I need to do all these for crochet pattern books and coloring books?
Happy to help! I don't believe so for coloring books, but a great resource (also on UA-cam) is Keith Wheeler Books. He does coloring books and puzzle books
I wish I had watched your video before "publishing" my book on lulu. I submitted a copyright registration and two copies of my book to the LOC Copyright office and stated that it was already published, not really having any idea what a LCCN is. Now I guess it's too late to get one.
You can still get a Lccn, you'll just want to edit the interior file to Include the number and update the file on lulu
In addition to supplying detailed information, I appreciate that your videos are presented crisply. Those I watched today answered some key questions, which prompted me to subscribe. A few questions linger, but hopefully they'll be answered as I watch more videos.

@@1MKWilliams Hi M.K. Some questions were answered when I viewed more of your informative videos. What remains are questions concerning pricing of my print book, relative to royalty comparisons between Kindle and IngramSpark (there will be paperback and hardcover versions, but let's focus on paperback). If the 400-page book is priced at $18.95, which is above comparable books of about the same page count, the KDP royalty is decent. However, the same list price results in a paltry royalty with IS when the wholesale discount is 55%. There's the option of pricing the book at $19.95, but even then, the IS royalty is relatively weak. I'm on the fence about listing at $19.95-I recognize the risk of losing some sales, yet I see the target market as being insensitive to price. That said, I don't want to come across as gouging. Another option is to lower the IS wholesale discount a bit, to, say, 53%. So, the questions are: 1) Would a slight reduction of the wholesale discount be detrimental to future retail store placement, and, 2) What is your advice regarding pricing?
@@robertpaxton3380 Hi Robert, I go into pricing in several of my videos and I did a masterclass video for my channel members earlier this year. ua-cam.com/video/vNRRaO3gBZg/v-deo.html Ultimately, you have control so you can adjust the price and discount as you see fit. If you think the algorithm is starting to work against you after lowering the wholesale discount you can increase it again. Every book/author has a unique experience and audience so it is hard to give blanket advice that will work for everyone.
@@1MKWilliams Thanks again. Looks like I'll be binging on info videos.
OMGOODNESS. Thank you so much for this video!! Its a few years old and not sure if you are still replying to comments....but does the LCCN and copyright need to be handled before uploading to kdp? I have finished my manuscript for a childrens book. My head is swimming with what needs to happen / sequence of tasks to finally publish the book. Whew, its a lot!
No, the LCCN and copyright registration can be done after uploading. However once you have the LCCN you'll want to add it to the copyright page so you'd have to upload the new version at some point
Can you add an ebook later on with your LCCN. I already applied for an LCCN number but did not include the e-book format. I may want to add an ebook in the future.
Yes
Thank you so much for explaining the difference between ISBN and Barcode requirements for the self publisher. I have been searching for specific answers to these questions for weeks and delighted to discover your channel. Thank you for making this information available and for delivering it in a very simplistic way - that takes skill. Could you direct me please to information relating to the UK equivalent of the LCCN, just so I get this right also.
Glad it was helpful! I don't know about the UK equivalent of the LCCN yet, but I'll look into that and see if I can find an answer. Best of luck!
Thanks so much. This video is heaven sent. I already have my copyright rights and paper. I now need to purchase some ISBNs, Barcodes, and Library of Congress number all before I pay to get my book formatted for KDP?
Hi Jatoria, you'll want your ISBN and Library of Congress number on the copyright page of your book so yes, you need those prior to formatting. The barcode is up to you if you purchase one or use the no price barcode from KDP. Best of luck!
@@1MKWilliams Thank you so much for helping me. 💕
Your voice and content and links are very helpful thank you
Thanks and welcome
Oh thankyou. I am a first-time publisher so you have cleared up some questions I had. I am viewing from Australia, if ever you were thinking of doing an Australian series. Thanks again
Fortunately, for AU the ISBN service is Thorpe-Bowker with the same parent company as Bowker who does our ISBNs in the US. So at least one item is similar. . Best of luck!
Hi, what is the difference between a barcode and a UPC code?
A UPC code usually refers to the numbers at the bottom of a barcode. For books the most important identifying number on an ISBN13 Barcode is the ISBN not the UPC number
Hello, thanks for the information. Do we have to buy our LCCN after we publish the book or before we publish it? Also, do we have to buy the barcodes separately from the ISBNs? Or can we buy them together? And do you need different barcodes for paperback and hardcover?
You DO NOT pay for an LCCN. This is a free program. I think my books will help you to sort out the timing and cost of things:

Okay, thank you very much!
How do libraries know about my book once I get my Library of Congress number? Do I have to market my book to them...call them?
Yes, you'll have to market to them. You can submit your book as a purchase request or let your local hometown library know. Usually you'll market to your readers that they can ask the library to purchase the book
Love phrase "...pack your patience..."
Thank you!!
If I get a 10 ISBN from Booker and just want to get one barcode through them, as it is my first book, is this possible? And then get the other barcodes for either hard book version or other new books when that happens? Thank you for all your wonderful informative information you provide!
Yes you can get the barcodes as needed. Also I don't think there is a financial savings buying the barcodes with the pack of isbns or as you need them. They're always $25
How many ISBN's do you need for ebook since there are format differences. Amazon Kindle uses mobi format and most others use epub format. If the original work is published in epub format then you upload the epub to Kindle who then in turn makes it available as a mobi. Do you need a separate ISBN for each?
Thank you! Does the Library of Congress notify you when they have received your books you send? I sent mine and they have given no indication of getting it
Nope
Well done!
So glad I found your channel.
Thanks.
Thank you! Definitely let me know if you have any other questions or topics you'd like to see me cover :)
I publish through Amazon exclusively so don't have any of these things. I would like to know what is required if I want to sell my books in bookshops and put them in libraries? Thanks so much for this very informative video. You do really great videos.
Hi Sally, Thank you for reaching out. It is possible to get your books in bookstores or libraries after being exclusive with Amazon, but there are a few steps to take. Most bookstores and libraries won't order from Amazon (although a few are changing this policy). I go into depth on this in my book, Going Wide. Probably best to start there so you can craft a plan that works for you. 1mkwilliams.com/going-wide/
Best of luck!
A lot of foot work. Check with your local stores and...
This was the exact video on the internet I was looking for! Thank you for being so thorough. Question: I went to buy 10 ISBNs from Bowker, and they have package deals like "10 ISBNS - 2 BARCODES" - Doesn't each ISBN require its own barcode? Shouldn't it be 10 ISBNS - 10 BARCODES?
Hi Brett, Happy to help! For each format of the book you need an ISBN, but only the print versions need a barcode since the eBook or audiobook won't pass over a scanner. So in an example, a book that has an eBook, Audiobook, paperback, and hardcover format needs 4 ISBNs. However, it only needs 2 barcodes (one for the paperback and one for the hardcover). Also that package from Bowker doesn't save you anything, you can purchase the barcodes separate from the ISBNs and it is the same as I'd you bought them all at once. The real savings is when you get the 10 pack of ISBNs instead of one at a time.
@@1MKWilliams Good to know! Thank you for the prompt response. You just acquired a new fan :)
You can generate barcode for free. Just purchase ISBNs only.
ok, so I want to use my isbn that I purchased on my paperback when I upload to Amazon. Now if I input MY ISBN number will THEY create the barcode automatically (Unless I already have it on there)?
Yes
Hey M.K., in what ORDER do I get these 4 legalities in place (copyright, ISBN, lib. of congress, barcode)? Do I have to have all front and back matter complete before I start?
order of operations for ISBN, LCCN, Barcode, and Copyright
I'm going to be writing Vacation Bible School (VBS) kits and Sunday school curriculum, and I'm not sure if I need to set ISBNs for them or not. The VBS is basically a "kit" of books ex: directors' guide, skit book, craft book, game book, etc. These are just letter-sized, paperback "guidebooks" for running a VBS. I've seen companies that sell them put ISBNs on them, but I didn't know if that was required or recommended. I have the same question about Sunday school curriculum. The difference is that there is only one "book" at a time, and they are released quarterly. I haven't seen any examples of ISBNs on that type of thing. Also, I don't even know if this would be considered a literary work or something else. Would you be able to advise on this? Thank you!
Hmm I've never put anything like that together so I have no experience. However, if you are seeing other curriculums print books or booklets and guides with isbns that could indicate that is the way to go
Which item should I do first? Copyright or the ISBN? I’m just about ready to do these things. I subscribed and put notifications on, so that I can continue to watch your videos. Thank you for sharing!
ISBN comes first, if you decide the register for copyright they will ask for the ISBN
@@1MKWilliams Thank you for that tid bit of information.
This was awesome! Thank you. Which one of these should I do first, assuming I have finished formatted work? Does it matter? When do bring it to let's say Amazon to get it out in the world?
The ISBN would go in the formatted interior so I'd say that one first
For the rest of the order of operations I have that in my workbook: 1mkwilliams.com/workbook/
Thank you so much for this video, very informative. I understand that: I need one ISBN for each format version of my book, that I only need one LCCN for all the formats of my book, I only need one Copyright registration for all the formats of my books, but you didn't mention how many barcodes I need to purchase for all the formats of my book. Do I need one, or one for each format? Thank you in advance for taking the time to make this video and for responding to my question. :-)
Hi Thomas, barcodes are only needed for physical products so in this case your print books (or if you did cds of your audiobook). Unless you are going to pursue a brick and mortar strategy for your book you don't have to purchase a barcode with the price, you can use a no price barcode that the platforms provide
Hello M.K., are you saying an ISBN and Copyright # are needed for an eBook?
Yes, ebooks need unique isbn numbers that are distinct from the paperback. The copyright registration covers the entire work in all formats. Both formats should have a copyright page with the isbn number listed. You can make one for each format or do I e copyright page that lists both isbns
Such helpful information, thank you so much for sharing!
You're welcome!
Hi MK I thought I read something on the US COPYRIGHT office that said to upload a book that has not had its final polished edit? Is this true....or did I read it wrong?
I've not heard that advice before
Very helpful. I'm planning on publishing my book through KDP. Based on your video I plan to get my own ISBN (not through KDP), I guess I'll get an LCCN (why not), I will copyright my work, don't think I need my own barcode since KDP puts them on when printing the books. I guess I need to get all of these before I have KDP even publish a proof copy for me since these numbers need to be in the book content. Is that correct? Do any of these require you to send the book (either electronic draft or final print) to them? And in what timeframe. Thanks.
ISBN you need before it goes to print. Lccn you could get later but I recommend getting both before upload. Both of those numbers need to go on the copyright page in the book. The copyright registration you can do after the book is published. Best of luck!
You’re a big help! Thank you for sharing. Subscribed ✅

I’ve noticed that several books have a page with copyright information on it. Where did they get that lingo from. I’ve called the US copyright office and was told there’s no template for those words. I ask b/c I want similar info in my book to let the public know it’s copyrighted.
Yes, there is a template you can follow. I have a video on this topic that you can watch: ua-cam.com/video/BMGT6IfEBTE/v-deo.html and @kindlepreneur has an article on this as well: kindlepreneur.com/book-copyright-page-examples-ebook/
Okay several questions about copywriting and price. I was looking on the official website. It says that if you do an electronic application its $45 and a standard is $65. Is there any reason you wouldn't do an electronic application? Next question, what if you're writing a series. Can you copywrite the series of books under one copywrite or do you need a separate copywrite for each book?
You would need one copyright registration per book if you wanted the entire series to be registered. I would consult an IP attorney for a recommended between the $45 and $65 option
Thank you. I have a question regarding copyright. I have finished my manuscript and I'm almost ready to publish!
My manuscript currently includes images that I have paid for from Canva (I have the permission to use these pictures). When I upload my manuscript on the copyright website, should I include the pictures that I have paid for and have permission for? Or should I just upload the manuscript with writing only.
I look forward to hearing from you and thanks again for your videos.
In this case you would list the images as a limitation on the copyright, you are saying that the work you are copyrighting are your words, not the images used with permission.
I am so impressed with your content regarding how to publish books the right way. I have self published 2 books for my wife and my mother using createspace. But I wish I watched your videos first. The books did come out nice though. Do you recommend any self publishing websites or programs?
Here is a lot of all the author resources I recommend: authoryourambition.com/author-resources/
May I share this on my Facebook? This is really good information.
Absolutely!
Thanks for the information! Does it matter which order you procure these in?
Ideally ISBN first because you'll need that when applying for copyright reg or Lccn and it needs to be on the barcode
Hi, thank you for this information. it was truly very helpful. I have a question concerning getting an ISBN from a publisher. They assigned it, but would like to buy my own because he didn't complete the work. He has given a bar code. What can I do about changing it. The book hasn't been published yet

Hi do people from all over the world need to register with the library of congress if they want to put their books on Amazon? Sorry I’m not from USA and this part confuses me.
The Library of Congress is only if you want your books available to libraries in the U.S. It has no impact whatsoever on your ability to upload to KDP or Amazon
Great clarification! Thanks for putting this video together.
I'm in Canada if you feel you'd like to research that region of imaginary borders.
Hi Ray, Glad you enjoyed the video. I did one in Canada for the Olympics: ua-cam.com/video/p5K8LuewSKA/v-deo.html
What would I need to do if I copyrighted my sequel months ago but have made drastic changes to it and am preparing to publish it with the current changes? I paid the fee for the copyright of both my first novel and my sequel but with the changes to the second one, do I just change the copyright? And if so, how? Does that mean I have to pay a fee again?
This question would be best answered by an IP attorney
@@1MKWilliams What's that?
Hi M.K.,
So if self-publishing, Barcodes ARE optional?
ua-cam.com/video/zfbxXp4lSg4/v-deo.html
QUESTION: My book was first published in Canada, and ISBNs are free there - in fact, I have a few left. Can I use those now that I'm in the US again? Will those numbers be accepted by the Copyright Office and the Library of Congress?
I believe you could still use them. I don't see why you couldn't also submit them with your copyright registration and Lccn request
I've been watching a video solely on ISBNs, and it works differently in Canada -- my Cdn ISBNs are from the gov't, and you send in a book, like you do with the Library of Congress here. I used my Cdn ISBNs with Ingramspark and Amazon so I guess I've answered my own question, now that I've thought it through. ISBNs are international, too, so the US Copyright Office and LCCNs should not be a problem.
However, I did find out that to get a new ISBN you have to be a Canadian resident, and I don't qualify for that anymore. (Yay!) So going forward, I'll definitely be buying them from Bowker. Thanks.
How do we go about getting the LCCN? I already published my book, but I would like to put it in libraries. The site is for books that have yet to be published.
I believe you should still be able to apply post publication: ua-cam.com/video/IbBSznaGeH8/v-deo.html
@@1MKWilliams I tried following the video. Once I got to the bottom, where it asked for "projected publication date," a pop-up said, "If your book is already published, please consider donating your book to The Library of Congress. For more information about donating your book, go to this web page: loc.gov/publish/pcn/faqs I Wish I knew this before publishing my book. Thanks for your help.
I'm selling a planner on amazon kdp. It gets updated every year as a new book because the calendar changes. I have a unique planner in a niche that I don't see anyone else selling. Should I copyright a planner? In this case I'm thinking I should. Does 1 copyright work for all years for the planner or do I have to get a new one every year?
Hi Rebecca, congratulations on your success with your planner. My initial thought is, yes copyright each year. But you may want to talk with a lawyer to see if that is the best option to cover you. Best of luck!
Do you need to print the LCCN or Copyright info in the physical book? I know a lot of trad pub'd books have "Library of Congress Cataloging-in-Publication Data is Available" printed in theirs. Can you explain the difference and what you think is standard/preferred?
Hi Sylvia, Great question. If you applied for the free LCCN through the LOC, then yes put it on the copyright page of your book. For the copyright info, when you apple for your copyright with the US Copyright Office it can take a while (like 3-6 months) to hear back. I use my standard copyright text and symbol but don't put the copyright reg number on the copyright page. As far of the CIP (cataloging in publication) data, I have not used this and I am still doing research on whether it is worth it or not. I'll do a video (or two) on the topic once I feel confident in putting out my opinion on it.
Hi there...super helpful, informative. One more question: what's the process? Which comes first? ISBN? LCCN? Copyright? Bar code? Thanks...
Hi Jane, The ISBN would come first since you need that for the LCCN and copyright applications as well as the barcode.

What is the correct time line to do each of them, when it is the right time, and what is the cost for an ISPN. And my last question which is if live in the Middle East, can i have all three from the us to be able to publish my book in their stores,
I really appreciate everything you’re doing
Thank you and take care,
Hi Abdulla, So I know what the cost for these things are and the process to acquire them for U.S. citizens and residents. I would suggest doing some research for your current country of residence/citizenship as they may have very different processes and fees. (ex. In the US we have to pay for ISBNs, but in some countries there is no cost for citizens like in Canada.) Best of luck!
Great video and thanks for breaking it down so simply. Since you did this video I see Bowker you can now copyright with them and get barcodes. Do you reco them as a one stop shop? Do I need to put on my own barcode since I am doing the formatting myself using indesign? And finally, does KDP and ingramspark put the ISBN on the books after I provide them with the number?
A few things: 1. Yes, you can use Bowker's service to file the copyirght reg but I believe there is a markup so you save money doing it yourself and maybe save time going via Bowker. 2. In terms of if you need a paid barcode or not, I have a video for that: ua-cam.com/video/8KXTxHl22Jw/v-deo.html 3. Yes, regardless of whether you supply your own ISBN or you use the "free" one, any service will apply it to the back/barcode. If you bring your own barcode the ISBN will already be on it.
also once you buy both each time you need to buy it with a new book? and also if you reorder its the same bar code and isbn number ?
Thanks, great content! So is possible to buy ISBN under a pen name? Copyright under pen name too? Little confused here…
Good video. Very informative. I have a manuscript. I want to self-publish (in libraries to). There appears to be a sequence to this process. Is it ISBN > Copyright > PCIP > LCCN > Barcode?

If you have different formats of the same book, do you have to register them all at the same time (for copyright or LCCN) or can I add a different format when it is done? Also, is there a time frame on when to copyright your work - before or after publication? Thanks for the video, this was really useful.
Hi Kerry, glad I can help. For a book with 3 formats it will need 3 ISBNs but only 1 lccn and 1 copyright registration. I usually apply for the copyright registration the day the book launches
I loved this video. I have a question about the Copyright price; you said $65 but when I applied and I do believe I was on the correct site, it was only $45. Could it be the price went down? I appreciate the information on Library of Congress, so I will be applying there. The Barcode information was very helpful. Thank you!
Hi Liz, Sorry for the delay. I planned to respond with a short video but my voice is gone so text it is. Yes, I did see there is an option for a $45 application. To me, the difference between the $45 and the $65 is anyones guess. I'm sure an IP attorney would be able to explain it better than me. www.copyright.gov/about/fees.html
HI, MK, Ok now another problem. 1. I think you said no on the copyright need for my type of books, and the Library of Congress might not be really needed but nice for a safe guide, but I still have to figure that one out if I want to go for the $65.00 or not. So if I don't really need it, why get it. Now for the control number you said is free, do I put that number on the copyright page with the library of Congress number? In my first book, I went to KDP, and through IS sells to Libraries. Do I still need a library control number(I do want my books there)?
Hi Dan,
Okay a few clarifying points here:
1. US based authors are protected under copyright law as soon as they create their work. The copyright registration through the US Copyright Office for $65 is an added later of protection should you have a claim. It is a relatively inexpensive certification, but usually authors don't get the certification number by the time the book is published.
2. The Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN) applies IF you want your book to get into libraries. If you don't plan to get your books there, don't worry about it. If you want your books there then you'll need to register for one. There is no cost. But you need to know your ISBN number when applying for it. If you use a "free" ISBN from a publishing platform you won't know the ISBN until after the book is published and therefore won't be able to have the LCCN (or the ISBN) on the copyright page for your book.
3. Both the ISBN and LCCN go on the copyright page of your book, it is good to get these assigned well ahead of formatting.
4. If you want IS to get your book into libraries then yes, get an LCCN.
Best of luck!
Very informative. I am saving this for reference. I also have a question. Do i need a seller's license or a business license to sell the book that i wrote in the form of e-book? I live in Greece.
For the business requirements in Greece, that I don't know. In the U.S. that is not a requirement.
I know that it is best to own my own isbn but do i also need to own my barcode? The book designer offered to give me one for free. Thanks.
This video should answer your questions: ua-cam.com/video/8KXTxHl22Jw/v-deo.html
I get the sense that copyrighting and creating ISBN under pen name is not really advised, but not sure if I'm picking up the inbetween lines wrong...
Both can absolutely be don.
Hi. I'm watching your video from the Netherlands in Europe. Just got started with writing my ebook I don't know if the information provided in your video applies to my over here as well.
So, yes and no. Yes in that my recommendation to own your ISBNs applied to any author. Yes is that your copyright should be recognized globally (most countries have reciprocal agreements to respect and defend copyright). Yes that a barcode is not an ISBN and the decision to have a price on it is something to consider. Where you get your ISBNs from in the Netherlands is the Bureau ISBN www.isbn.nl Best of luck with your book!
@@1MKWilliams Thank you for the information and even doing the searching work for me.
@M.K. Williams, if I have Hard, Soft and Digital versions of my book and want to do a Public event like a book fair or arts/crafts show, is there a way to get plastic Kindle gift cards with codes for my book so that the Buyer can download later?
One more. How helpful is QR Code for a Self Publisher?
I'm not sure how the kindle gift cards would work for a few reasons. Mainly they could use that card to buy any book, you'd have to pre-pay for the books on a lot of cards, and because you are giving the reader money they technically any reviews could get flagged and taken down if Amazon catches on. The idea of the QR code sounds good, I know more authors are using that to direct readers to their sales pages. Best of luck!
Thank you for clarifying the difference between all these codes, I am about to purchase 2 ISBN from Bowker (for paperback & ebook) I would like to know if it's ok to have Amazone generate a barcode for the paperback. I also would like to know if it's essential to get the LCCN before I print my book and before I post it for sale on Amazon. Thanks
Hello! Congratulations on your book. You likely don't need to bring your own barcode to KDP so you can let them generate it. I did a whole video on that specific question: ua-cam.com/video/8KXTxHl22Jw/v-deo.html. As for the LCCN I suggest getting that before you upload the manuscript as that will need to go on your copyright page. Best of luck!

Wow!! So great 😄
Hi, thank you for the video. It was very helpful. You mentioned that you are going to make a video about free barcodes that you were at that time researching. Have you completed your research and made a video about this? Thanks again.
Glad you liked this video :) Yes, I did that video here: ua-cam.com/video/labQZ8MwQ7U/v-deo.html
Dear MK, Your video is VERY helpful to me. Thank you, thank you! Can you tell me please what company do you use to purchase copies of printed books?
Happy to help! I use IngramSpark or KDP to get copies of my own book.
@@1MKWilliams Thanks you very much.
Does content in this video apply to American writers living in Canada?
Yes and no. The distinction between ISBNs and barcodes applies to all, for where to get these things I have a video where I collaborated with a Canadian author to give you the details on where to get these items
@@1MKWilliams Thank you. I have a 99% finished manuscript that is trying to get from my computer's wordprocessor to a marketable format.
Thank you for these videos!!!
I thought I was ready to publish. Hahahahahahaha!
Glad to help!!
Thanks ms.Williams beyond helpful 🙏🏽
You are so welcome
Regarding Copyright and LCCN, how would a co-author be handled?
Im not sure, I've not handled that before. However two trusted names are going to be releasing a book on coauthoring soon and I would expect them to discuss this. I'll post about it as soon as it is live
Great information M.K. BUT when do I need to get all these things. Is it after the book is entirely done and formatted or while it is still in the process? Thank you for any help you can give me.
Get your ISBN and LCCN prior to formatting since you need both of those numbers on your copyright page. Get the barcode before the cover art is finalized as it goes on the back cover. You can register the copyright when the book is published. Best of luck!
Hi, I’m looking to publish my book. What is the process for getting my book into Libraries?

@@1MKWilliams Thank you so much!! I just subscribed to your channel and I can’t wait to learn more from you 🙏
Hey has anyone tried publishing their hardback book on amazon kdp and using an isbn for the hardback. But then for the paperback, not using an isbn, and linking it to the hardback? You think that would work? Because if you don't use an isbn, amazon does not let you show inside your book. So I'm wondering if I could do this as a way to save on an isbn.
Hello, I don't see why that wouldn't work. However, I think I would question what your strategy is with your ISBNs. The reason to own your ISBN when you bring it to Amazon is for your to retain full control if you ever want or need to move the content to a second platform. If you plan to self publish the print books on multiple platforms you have to own the ISBN. If you are sticking with Amazon only and don't ever intend to publish it wide then you don't need to purchase either ISBN. I see ISBN ownership as an all or nothing. In the US Bowker offers a discount on a bundle of ISBNs so if you need 3 or more you save by getting the bundle
Thank you! Great guidance.🌈💖🌺xx
You're welcome!
Thank you for being very informative in your videos. I do have a quick question, I have both a paperback and an ebook. Do I have to copyright them both separately, since it has two separate ISBN’S or do I only copyright the paperback book under the paperback ISBN?
It's one copyright registration for the creative work. So one registration covers both formats .
Great information! Question...do we need different barcodes for different versions of our book just like the ISBN...ex. one for the hardcover, one for the paperback? Because the prices would differ?
Also, can you direct me to the video where you talk about making an LLC for self publishers. Thanks!
Yes, the barcode is specific to the format so you would need one for the paperback and one for the hardcover. Here is the video for the LLC: ua-cam.com/video/tehqFWhvRxs/v-deo.html
@@1MKWilliams thanks a bunch!
