Who wouldn't want to camp with Wonderhusy?
She's so talkative, she participates in her own 2 way conversations. She's funny, but id be wanting to put a sock in her mouth at some point. 😅
I worked on the Shoshone N.F. in which Kirwen resides. Volunteer groups go there and do restoration work. Bless there hearts. Yes there is Griz there too.
She was trying to get to Howland Island in the Pacific. On the other side of the world from the Bermuda triangle. The US Navy helped in the search and I believe it lasted for months.
Yeah, she was way off on this one. Usually, I'm impressed with her knowledge with details...she hits on some obscure stuff sometimes.
The giant rivets are nails with large washers on them regular nails would tear through the tar paper. They were used to hold the tar paper on.
" No One Compares To You" you are truly a Wonder to behold🥰💘
Miners didn't have much money to spend in the town due to low ore amounts. Therefore it makes sense that Lucille, who was obviously trying to build her own business, couldn't afford to hire a staff and so, she had to run the brothel herself; by hand. Reasonable explanation for why she was called "The Palmist".
Tips for bear country
Pepper spray, Little silver bells and cinnamon spay are recommended. Identify the scat. Brown bear scat is small and lumpy. Black bear scat is brown and has berries. Grizzly bear scat is large, hard, dark and has little silver bells, and smells like cinnamon and pepper.
As for the bears themselves, here's how to tell whether the bear you encounter is a black bear or a grizzly bear: Kick the bear in the rear and then climb a tree. If the bear is a black bear, it will climb the tree and eat you. If it's a grizzly, it will knock the tree down and then eat you.
have you heard this old one
two hunters running from a bear the slower one screams out I hope we can out run the bear the other hunter says I just have to out run you
Cheers
A couple of tangentially-Kansas items in this very neat video. The woman who was recently killed in the area by a Grizzly Bear was from Derby, a town in Sedgwick County KS directly across Wichita from my location. Amelia Earhart was from Atchison KS, which today has the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum, and the Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum that features a beautifully-restored (and last surviving) Lockheed Electra 10-E, the model of plane Amelia used.
Beautiful scenery. Can see why Amelia wanted a cabin there. Glad you didn't scare up any bears. Stay well Sarah.
The 'Bomb/bucket' is known as a Kibble, and you were right, used for hauling ore up out of the mine!
Neat boiler, Horizontal Firetube by the looks, the engine looks like an old feed water pump.
Comment from Australia. 'Absolutely love that you carry a ''COPY OF THE CONSTITUTION'' with you. Very necessary in such a well constituted country.' 🙃🙃
Love my wonderhussy wednesdays!!!
Wyoming looks insanely beautiful ❤
Good job! 👏 ( quick FYI, Sarah ~ Amelia Earhart's plane went down in the Pacific, not the Bermuda Triangle. It was also suspected the Japanaese shot her plane down but it was never recovered. )
Love the drone shots! Great addition to your awesome content.
Nice place! Thanks
The wall paper you saw on the ceiling of that one derelict building sort of looked like asbestos to me. I wouldn't be deep breathing to much around it.
"Ninny" that made me laugh! You're a gem, love your videos 😊
Amelia Earhart went down on July 2 1937 in central south pacific on her way to Holland island.
You know we always enjoy your videos and adventure. Cause I can't go on those adventure I appreciate you sharing the places you go.
of course those "rivets" are there to hold that outer canvass covering, they are similar to big headed nails that a upholsterer would use
I’ve lived and camped in grizzly country. Using your brain and following the instructions of experts improves your survival chances immensely. The people who get hurt are almost always the ones who screw up and surprise a mother bear with cubs.
One summer I worked for the US Forest Service stationed in Dubois, Wyoming. Took awhile to get use to the elevation coming from Michigan. You could still find wooden flumes used to move logs down the mountains. Pretty country.
It would be nice to see some funding so wunderhussy can finish Amelia Earhart's flight around the world.
Thank you Sarah you have a great way to tell the story.
At 5:08 it cracked me open 😂.
I love the way you entertain and displaying the scenery.
Three thumbs up from Denmark.👍👍
I totally agree with Sarah that the "Gods were angry" at such a boring mining town, and that's why they destroyed it 😂
That gas fired heater on its side had a “MW” logo above the Signature brand name. I believe Signature was a brand of merchandise sold by the Montgomery Ward company of Chicago. In addition to having retail department stores, Wards had a major catalog business very much like Sears Roebuck and Company.
Absolutely beautiful country up there! Absaroka county was where the Longmire series was supposed to take place, they need to re-do the series with you in it! Great video, thanks!
@@freeandhappybumblebee sorry I didnt see your post but yes, that was a great series, great stuff!
There was just an auction through the Longmire Foundation. One of the items was to be a character in Craig Johnson’s next book. Missed it by just a couple days.
Wyoming is just always beautiful. Who wouldn't want a cabin there. Good job keeping the bears away.
I like wearing a little jingle bell when I hike. Scares off the big scary animals
Regarding Kirwin ghost town. I think the material you thought was wall paper was asbestos sheeting. It had good insulation properties.
The mountain range is preonounced "Ab-sore-a-ka." The Forest Service and volunteers have done a lot of work to stabilize the buildings in Kirwin. The lighter colored wood in the buildings is a result of those efforts. During the mining days most of the miners had their families with them, hence, less demand for saloons and brothels than if there had been a large number of single men. And, as pointed out by other commenters, Amelia Earhardt disappeared in the Pacific, thousands of miles from the "Bermuda Triangle." BTW, glad to see you spending time and doing videos in Wyoming.
It was called OMING until someone went there and yelled - Why!!!!!!!
Good to see you back into the ghost and mining town trail great video
Girl, I would be packing some serious firepower if I was gonna camp in grizzly country. Pretty sure bear spray is just a condiment to them.
Great video. Hussy, my grandfather and his brother owned a ranch not far from Kirwin. I live in Hamilton Ohio now, where the Estate Stove was manufactured. Thanks for a great video.
Starting Friday thru the weekend find a spot to view a gorgeous meteor shower! Midnight till dawn, the largest and most active meteor shower of the year! THX, The Montana land and sky scape are 1 of a kind! So are you!👍❤🇺🇸❤
Thanks for the video Sarah. It's a good one. You never disappoint. Good stories and you are naturally funny!
I think that bucket is an old iron ore bucket. Those miners may also have been without whiskey, tobacco and bitter black coffee so they were lonesome old doggies. I borrowed that last line from a song about Wyoming btw.
She Does a Very Good Job On All Ghost Town Videos .... I Discovered Her in 2017 ..... And I Never Stop Watching Her Videos ..... Great Job Wonderhussy !
I would never wander into bear country without my good friends Smith and Wesson, let alone problemed grizzlies, but that's just me. Yeah, I watched a PBS program on this ghost town a few years ago. I found it interesting that there was an Amelia Earhart connection to this rural area.....take care and travel on !!
Nice little trip to the mountains, Be safe and careful, remember bears like dark spaces to sleep in !!!
have a great day
One of my favorite fishing spots is about 20 miles or so from Kirwin and I have visited Kirwin. I've been going there (once every year or two, as I live in Colorado) for 20 years now. I've never seen a grizzly. I've seen plenty of moose, though.
FYI, Amelia disappeared in the other side of the world from the Bermuda Triangle in the western side of the Pacific Ocean.
Love your story's but Luceill the palmist or aka Rosey Palm was a friend of Amelia Earhart and her house had a runway so she could fly in, those wooden bunk beds were drying racks for you guessed it drying weed, the miners weren't allowed to drink while working but they could smoke weed, did you know George Washington owned a weed farm, every day he came home from work Martha had a big fat bowl waiting for him, for your last questions the structure with the tower is called the head frame for the elevator shaft and that long cylinder is a steam winch for hoisting ore up the shaft and that's how they come up with the song, she got the gold mine and he got the shaft, I hope this little history lesson answers your questions
Wow, you are so smart and know so much. However, it is more likely that you don't though.
You are brave for sure ,
That does intimidate guys .
You Rock Chic .
Looks like you were right on the remnants of Earhart's cabin. The Historical Marker on Google Maps indicates it was south of the green cabin and the Wood River. Beautiful scenery. Oh, and hats off to you for braving the Grizzly Bear habitat for all of us. Brave woman!
Amazing how the ruins at Kirwin are in such good condition, compared to those one finds in the archetypal desert mining towns, where everything is rat-eaten and in shambles. Some of the wood in those buidlings looks like it was just put in place last year! Back in the '80s, a friend and I used to knock around ghost towns such as Kirwin, Bannack (Montana), Pahsirmeroi, Custer, Bonanza, and Empire (Idaho), and others. Back then, there weren't any dudes hiring camping adventure guides to pack them in and set up their tents. Nice video - you covered the features of the old town quite well! Cheers.
Some of the wood IS/was put in place recently . The undercarriage of that main large building was definitely shored up in the last decade to keep it from collapsing . As they say in Bodie , arrested decay .
The oar bucket you saw has a valve on the bottom . It is, or was used as, a "bailer" to draw water out of the bottom of the mine. Could have had a duel purpose.
Fun video to watch Sarah. I wandered around some pretty remote areas in Alaska exploring old mining camps. Such interesting stuff to see. Many of the places I went in my younger days have been looted and packed off by people who have no respect for history. It was all grizzly and black bear country. I carried bear protection much more lethal than bear spray but in all those years I never had to use it. I had several encounters over the years but never attacked. Just always be very aware in bear country. Bears are not predictable.
15 minutes in... 3/8 inch beaded tounge and groove paneling. The first several houses I lived in as a kid had this. Tootles... Wade 👍😎👍
Great Video! I first found your channel when you and your sister were searching for the Fenn treasure. Me and a few members of my family did a looong road trip to search and our first stop was Meteetsee. After a rest, we headed to a BLM camp and then to Kirwin for the day. That's a beautiful, but hairy drive! As newbie flatlanders, we were so bear unaware, it makes me shudder to think of it now! We poked around the buildings a little and headed to Amelias cabin site. It was just a basic foundation and about three logs high. It was right behind those structures you were at. It was kind of a rushed day, so your video was enjoyable to watch, I could've spent a couple of days poking around there! The wind and ice cave vids were great too!
Totally worth braving a "grizzly infested" area. Thanks Wonderhussy!
You always find a good campsite enjoy your content
Congratulations!!! I see you finally made it there!!!
Great video wonderhussy! You are so brave and daring. I love watching your adventures but stay safe!
Love ghost, mining towns .. never been there until today. Thanks Sarah. Waiting for your second video for today !! Love ya ❤😅😊👍🇺🇸
Electricity was a thing, but many didn't have it until the 1950's. Including my mother's family in the Outer Banks.
Hi Sarah, thanks for another great video! I found out that Amelia Earhart crashed somewhere in the pacific. "Then, on July 2, 1937, Earhart and Noonan took off from Lae in New Guinea. With just 7,000 miles between them and their goal, they planned to stop at the isolated Howland Island in the Pacific for fuel. They never made it there. Instead, Amelia Earhart, Fred Noonan, and their plane vanished forever"
You know these people weren't nearly as prudish as we may think...I worked in national parks dressed in period clothing, and did a bunch of primary research on the characters. They were less sick in the head as we are, freer. (About this camp: probably or possibly one of the last joyful places to live out one's life on earth. Tragedy and joy are intertwined.) Their connection to nature was indelible.
Lucy the palmist took things into her own hand to give the story a happy ending.
Well built buildings!! ALL the snow and weather. Beautiful
Always enjoy your videos WH.
Couldn't help but notice all the dead trees in the last part of this one. Looks like the Pine Bark Beetle has been around. Too bad. They have killed many trees at my property in Northern Idaho.
The Amelia Earhart connection was especially wonderful.
Love her imagination 😊
Great tour from our "Ghost Town Hussy," loved the wood, "knob & tubing" electrical.
Glad you had the bear spray. Great video. We have quite a few grizzlies here in Alberta. My nephews both have big acreages with lots of 🐻 and 🫎 and mountain lions. Hope you have a sidearm in your rig. Thanks for fascinating blog.
It's little house on the prarie. Don't make fun of them. Laura is gonna come out of the house yelling "paaaaaaa!" lol
Meteetsee -the next town over was one of the wildest towns in all of Wyoming. It was a hangout for some of the most famous outlaws including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It was pretty much headquarters for the wild bunch in the state of Wyoming. So if they wanted to get wild they just took the stagecoach to Meteetsee.
Super cool video!
I bet your Friend Ross could tell you what some of that equipment is and how it was used.
Thanks for letting us tag along Sarah!
It is a shaft house & you are right it is an ore bucket. Also, I'm sure the shaft hole has been covered up. Beautiful place to explore, thanks!
Thanks for showing us Wyoming...........wish I still lived there.
I can see Ross encouraging you to carry, when you are that far out, with grizzlys.🐻
Ross the one-legged miner of the Tecopa Mines. He and the hussy are buds.
Wow! Fascinating! Loved you "carrying my copy of the Constitution!"😂
Even Amelia got “ cabin blocked” 😂😂
That little gas furnace you ran across was a Signature brand furnace. It's Sears private label house brand back in the 60's/70's
The Estate Stove Company started in 1884, although not known by this name. The Kahn Brothers, Lazard, and Felix, owned a foundry in Hanging Rock, OH. This foundry produced wood and coal-burning stoves for domestic purposes. Eventually, home heating stoves and gas furnaces were added to the product line. What you saw in the building was a kerosine stove. It's called a Rock house. I am glad you did not touch that ceiling and wallpaper. It is most likely asbestos. Where the boiler is located looks like a rock crusher using steam to run it.
@@gordbaker896 Both fuels were available but oil would have frozen and kerosene would have flowed better. It could have been diesel for all we know.
Another fabulous adventure!!
Thank you for the great vlog of this nice looking town! It was nice to visit Wyoming with you as a guide! Glad you did not get to meet any bears during the journey 😀! Looking forward to your next vlog! Stay safe and adventurous! 🤙😄
Another fun adventure. Glad you did not meet any bears.
Amazing views from the mining camp! Glad they were no bears, but maybe like the expedition dudes, they were intimidated by the one & only Wonderhussy ❤❤❤
Love your show you are very knowledgeable about the history of Nevada and I love your posts about Death Valley the best.
Manger for hay, the box for oats.
Thank you for taking us along. You make your videos such fun, you are delightful!
Good report from Wyoming, never been there, awesome old houses, u r beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍
@20:00 I believe that building is called a Hoist House.
Wow, how amazing is this. Love all the building and especially the scenery. Just gorgeous! ❤
I grew up in northern Wisconsin and my grandparents did not have indoor plumbing untill 1988 when their house burnt down and all of their 9 kids and 40 Grand kids chiped in to build them a new house with plumbing. Lol
Wonderhussy, you made me laugh every time you said Amelia disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle - 4 times! LOL. I thought she disappeared in the Pacific Ocean. Great video and glad the grizzly didn't get you! Stay safe!
At the first campsite you can see the roofs of buildings between the trees.
Wonderful video again! I just got back from photographing Bodie Ghost Town in the Sierras. Your Kerwin was very similar to Bodie in terms of condition. However, Bodie doesn't seem to have the time consuming ornate wood craftsmanship. Maybe it was because Bodie had brothels and saloons by the dozens. The Bad Men from Bodie could care less about woodworking on their days off. 🤣🤣🤣
I live near Bodie! I love visiting there! Bodie and the other old ghost towns had many fires and later people looting lumber. I imagine alot of the better woodwork with better craftsmanship were taken back before the area was protected. I live in a home that was made of different parts of very very old buildings that were cut into pieces (you can see saw marks) moved and put back together into the home I live in. I have no idea where they got the original pieces of the house (could be from a ghost town) but we’ve seen the original building when we’ve done remodeling and it’s from the same era as Bodie. They used shredded newspaper and cloth for insulation. So glad they protected Bodie because a ghost town called Aurora in Nevada was the same size and every single building was stripped and looted because it wasn’t protected.
Awesome scenery.
Another wonderful trip with you Sarah, my granddaughter and I are huge fans. The amount of territory you cover is amazing! ❤ redbaron
thanks for sharing your adventures this was a lot fun and the scenery was beautiful stay safe
Oh and if I'm in bear, especially grizzly country, I would,as when we were in Alaska, carry our .44.
When she was at the place reading information about the area , there was a sign saying " No Shooting " , does that mean you cant carry a gun in case of a bear attack?
It has been my experience that people from large cities are not as friendly too strangers as the hicks from the sticks are.
Very true, but I can't blame them. The two legged predators from the cities are far more dangerous than the four legged ones we have here in griz country.
Funny, I was just there. I also heard they released the Grizzley in a different area.
Hi another good video l like the countryside the huts look good the good old days
4:43...Maybe it was the cattle barons ( that 'ran 'em out of town'...) along with the sheep !!!😁😂😘...18:53...You're right Sarah !! It's the dud "Fat Boy" atomic ordinance that missed the Hiro Hito's palace during W.W.11...!! 22:42...Wouldn't it be ironic if Amelia was at her cabin there whilst everyone was looking for her in the south Pacific !! 😁
👍👍👍👍👍😄, No need to apologise, just keep doing what you are doing !
Drone video ! Low angle creek crossing! Beautiful carpentry throughout. Use what you have!
Always a debate about Grizzlies. The Dine guide in Yellowknife said. The Grizzly has to get pretty close for the spray ( read can) . Truth is if you miss either way you have one pissed off Grizzly Thanks for another great video
Little correction, Amelia Earhart went down in the Pacific, not in the Bermuda Triangle.
I came here to say the same. She disappeared pretty much in the middle of the Pacific, about as far from the Bermuda Triangle as you could get.
There is speculation they made a crash-landing in the Marshall Islands.
@@henrytowne7463 Yes, some believe they lived for several years after the crash but no one really knows.
It's time for Disney to reinvent Amelia Earhart. Turning her into a princess named Amylu, a young woman who loves to fly. Even though it's a man's thing.
Debatable…
