  • Leading up to it's highly anticipated sequel, I revisited one of my favorite games of all time. The Last of Us truly pushed the boundaries of storytelling and character development in a video game. Does it still hold up seven years later?

When it comes to more "cinematic" games, I'm more about the story and characters and less about the gameplay itself too, as Until Dawn is probably my favorite video game.

I am a current console gamer, and have played this game multiple times, on different difficulties. I love it, think it is one of the best games ever made. While the story may have been done before, where they take it is amazing, and you are endeared to Joel and Ellie by the end of this journey. Not a game that needs a sequel, IMO, perfect ending. Definitely true that the characters and story come first, and the gameplay is more secondary, due to its lack of variety. (And all those plank puzzles!) Also, am I the only one who recognized Ashley Johnson as the waitress that Cap saves in Avengers? Every time I see her, I'm like, "ELLIE!"
I'm curious to hear what you think of the sequel. I won't be playing it, because over the years Naughty Dog has turned into a company that doesn't respect anyone anymore, not even their employees, or their customers. So they don't deserve my $60; I will be saving it for PS5.

well if you look at their games they've never been able to make a game that's both story-based and open world at the same time, even lou2 isn't open world were as rdr2 made by rockstar studios is both of those things and is a great game at that, something that naughty dog can't do and you should research stuff before making a claim like that

Fantastic review Cody, HBO ought to cast you as Joel you'd be bad ass.
One of my all time favourite games, tense, dramatic, emotional, plays well, looks awesome, superb character arcs it's just the perfect game.
I had laugh Bills mate couldn't cope so hung himself but for me the scene Joel interrogated 2 killers asked one mark the map then kills him, the other guy says how you know telling truth & Joel said I believe him then kills him too, bad ass.
My only concern & it's a big concen is Last Of Us 2 I just hope that story doesn't undo all the good work this game achieved.

Finished it again last month ready for part 2. Only about 4 hours into that but so far its awesome. Out of interest. What difficulties have you played it on? When I bought this back after it was released, it was more so because of the fact that I love the Uncharted games. I have not played many survival horror games nor am I good at them. That is what turned me off of this at first. Eventually I popped it back in because of hearing so many good reviews on it, and not only got used to the gameplay, but having it become perhaps the greatest video game story I've ever experienced.

Although Character and Story are Great.

what about telltale's the walking dead s1 or s2 ? I would honestly argue those games are more immersive and emotional than this game that won over 200 GOTY awards for it's story, i personally think it doesn't deserve all those awards because it won over 200 GAME of the year awards, not over 200 STORY of the year awards. It's gameplay gets overlooked so much, outside of it's multiplayer it's not interesting it's story well it has quite a few plot holes and a bunch of dumb decisions for example: Tess is promised to get back her ammunition by Marlene in beginning of the story and yet Tess dies and when you meet Marlene again she doesn't mention Tess which seems out of character for her considering their conversation in the beginning of the story, did Marlene communicate with Joel through a walkie talkie to know Tess is dead ? If so then why didn't they show that ? Because I can't genuinely understand why Marlene didn't mention " Where's Tess ? " and that makes Tess's overall character insignificant and redundant honestly. Another thing is the ending where Joel lies to Ellie which in my opinion is a dumb decision which makes for a dumb ending because 1. Ellie is going to inevitably find out Joel lied to her because Joel escaped the hospital with all those firefly soldiers still alive and might hunt the 2 of them down plus the fireflies have walkie talkies scattered across numerous areas which Ellie could hear and maybe find out Joel's lie which does happen in the sequel and 2. if that happens then Ellie's trust and relationship with Joel will just be shattered and Ellie and Joel's relationship is suppose to be the main focus of the game which is easily broken when Ellie finds out Joel lied to her, therefore making the story of the game a waste of time and also making the game a waste of time. Plus the story copies a lot of plot lines from horror games that have the exact plot line, for example when you find out that David and his group are cannibals that's something we've already seen in telltale's twd s1 e2 and also there's not that many characters in the story to begin with, characters like Maria felt insignificant because all we know is that she is Tommy's wife and that she knows everything about Joel and Tommy's backstory (specifically that she knew what happened to Sarah) heck even Tommy felt insignificant because he appears in the beginning of the game and again 3 quarters into the game the story says that Tommy left working for the fireflies because of the violence that happened, okay the problem i have is that we don't get to know anything about Tommy's life before this post-apocalypse, I mean we knew about Joel's life before the apocalypse being Sarah's father and living a regular life until the outbreak but we didn't know anything about Tommy prior to events of the outbreak and he and Joel don't see eye to eye, which i understand because Joel killed innocent people explained from the dialogue in the game, another "plot hole" for me is Bill we see him early into the game and after that we never see him again which is pathetic because Bill is the one character that i found somewhat intriguing because he places traps around his town and is a smart mechanic, the thing I'm talking about here is his dialogue with Joel which if you pay attention to you'll see that Bill probably holds a grudge against him over a past event not shown in the game which pulls me out of the story honestly because in this game each of the characters obviously have a certain backstory but they never dig into it we only really get Joel's backstory and nothing else because with Ellie we know that her mother was friends with Marlene, but other than that we don't really know anything about Ellie's mother and how she died which the game implies that she died or how she gave birth to Ellie, because I imagine that it's pretty difficult to give birth in a post-apocalyptic world and I'll also talk about the left behind dlc, which in it we see Riley, Ellie's "friend" before the events of the main game, and basically they talk about how Riley became a member of the fireflies and then got infected and died, that's really it i mean Ellie and Riley play a bunch of games for fun, but that's it, we just don't get that much information about each of the characters even Joel's backstory we don't get to know anything about their hometown or anything, which I'm a person that wants to get a lot of information about each of the character's backstories and also get to how they ended where they ended and you might say "but hey, what about the 20 year time skip and how the fireflies have become a resistance army trying to stop the infection and that people have been living in cities that are well defended" I doubt that is how some of the characters have lived in this story for example henry and sam are killed in a dramatic way but, all we get to know is that henry has been protecting sam ever since he was born and just happened to be in the same city as Joel and Ellie which i really didn't care their deaths (outside of the fact that they were the only 2 black characters and they were killed off which seemed racist) but i didn't care about them dying because they didn't leave that much of an impact on the story for me, because we don't get to how they have managed to survive this long in a city filled bandits that kill anything they see or where they came from or who took care of them because henry would have been very young when the outbreak started and that's the thing the game's story isn't lucid or explicit which usually i love ambiguity in video games but people that say this game has like the best story of all time, i don't think that it's even the best post-apocalyptic story of all time i would give that feat to telltale's twd s1 or s2 because those games were completely embedded to it's story and nothing else were as this game is supposed to be a cinematic movie or in better terms a cinematic experience and if that's the case then why does this have multiplayer ? People ignore that fact because the multiplayer is good and that they claim that this is a survival game but then how is it a cinematic experience if it's a survival game and that's another problem is that most people play it for it's story and nothing else were as there's a small community that plays the game for it's multiplayer and if people claim that it's multiplayer is the best in any video game they clearly have not played pubg or battlefield 5 or cod black ops or payday 2 or super smash brothers i'm mentioning this because i've come across comments that have made that dumb claim but it really is just an ordinary game with mediocre gameplay and a nothing-more-than-decent story because a lot of the story has cliches that we've seen before that being said i think it's a decent game it's not something I'm going to include in a top 100 or 400 best video games of all time for me because i just don't find that interesting after watching playthroughs about it that's the thing i've never played the game myself but i have watched multiple playthroughs of it since 2015 and never peaked my interest i'm never going to play myself because it's multiplayer was shutdown which gives me more than enough incentive to not play the game myself. please read this comment and don't be toxic.

i liked the story parts. if i could have watched them edited up into a video i would have liked it more. but alot of the gameplay was downright frustrating. go between Tomb raider 2013 and this game on bow and arrow firing and you'll see my reasoning. its more swift and accurate in tomb raider. And also the "instant kills" from a clicker had me replaying certain areas about 20 times in a row. I'm not the greatest at stealth, i admit it. but when all hell is breaking loose and the game punishes you for trying melee, that is taking control out of a players hands and i didn't like that. i beat the game, but more out of spite than anything else. I did not have a good time in the end and was severely stressed out. so i like some story aspects but the rest of the game is NOT a classic to me.

Cody Leach, you liked this stupid comment, screw this stupid game why do you care about this 12-hour long piece of shit so much the story is overrated honestly, you're just seeing 2 dipshits survive an apocalypse with people dying around them, heck i really hate the ending of this game, Joel basically goes ahead saves Ellie and kills Marlene and lies to Ellie about them finding a cure, i understand it's because Joel cares about Ellie but there was no way he manages to keep the truth from her ( evidently from the 2nd game and I liked how Joel died in a dumb way, never cared about his character to begin with.) but basically Ellie finding out that Joel lied about the vaccine would ruin their chemistry and relationship throughout the entirety of tlou which is the main focus of the game being the 2 protagonist's relationship which is inexorably deteriorated due to Ellie finding out the truth which would ultimately make the game's story pointless and a waste of time, gaming sin's sins video on the game says much of the same thing about the game's ending as i did.

Absolutely, The Last Of Us and The Last Of Us 2 are great ,and replayable ,along with the first three Uncharted games!
I’m only 5 hours in LOU2 ,and I say ,it’s that good! Uncharted 4,however doesn’t share that replay value. Uncharted 4 is a great ending to the Uncharted series, but replay value comes from the first 3 games. Uncharted 4 is very slow, and has one of the worst openings in a video game! The first play through was different,I was actually invested! The second play through is just boring, that I don’t find any replay value in it. It’s good, but LOU2 is a lot better, and has the same quality as the first!🤗👍👍

The dialogue in the sequel is dreadful. Plus I hate how Neil Druckmann says videogames are over sexualized and misogynist. I'm two hours in to the sequel and all anyone has talked about, in game, is Dina & Ellie kissing. What happened to the world building? Warring factions? GOOD characters ... I have it the benefit of the doubt, even after spoiling myself with the leaks...kind of regretting it
