Matt, Berkley's Havoc Pit Boss in Perfection (clear-stained) or Big Texan (stained-muddy), stroked on a ¾oz Swinghead jig, around logjams in the outside bends of the backs of feeder creeks has been💰💰 for me!
Think I want to try swing/football heads for the quick change between a searchbait (swimbait), and maybe try a Trickworm, or floating-tail type bait for targeting cover...ala a pseudo shakey-head.
I have had very good success with the swing head with a rage craw. Great explanation on when to use the two different types of jig heads. Greatly appreciated the insight.
You should try the Adrenalin craw in Black / Blue .1/2 oz . Tends to catch the bigger Bass . Just chuck and crank , slowish retrieve along rock , gravel etc 👍
My question would be what would be the idea weight for fishing a swing head from the bank in no deeper then 8 to 10 foot of water should I go with a 3/8th oz or something smaller.
Yes I will and am planning on it. If you have a specific lake you can request it on a personal lake breakdown fishthemoment.com/personal-lake-breakdown/fish-the-moment-personal-lake-breakdown-with-matt-stefan?rq=matt%20stefan
I use these two baits basically the same way as you- but I pair them up a lot. I'll use the swing head to find the fish and then use the jig to really pick the area apart once I know they're there. But I also use it like a pegged T rig quite a bit- mostly out of pure laziness. If it's already tied on and I want a pegged rig anyway- why not? They work great for swimbaits to- keeps them on bottom even when you're moving at a good clip. The one thing I see ppl get wrong with them a lot is they fish too small of a weight- these babies are meant to stay on bottom and sometimes you want to move them pretty fast- which means you need weight to keep it down. As a kayak/bank angler I know the tendency is to buy lighter stuff but- when it comes to jigs and swing heads both- I've learned not to be afraid of the heavier weights, you need them sometimes. Even if it's not deep, current requires weight as well- and I fish a lot of current, especially this time of year.
I nose hook or skin hook a floated tube to a swinghead jig. That's m favorite rig to throw on a swinghead jig. I throw a long ribbontail worm too, but the tube more often, since it has produced more fish for me.
I'm a jig fishing nut and I know they eat but I've never caught a fish on a swing head which is crazy since it's basically a swim jig w/o the skirt. It's hard to have confidence in a bait that's never produced. What situations would u choose a swinghead over a jig? And why? Dam thats a whole video
Yes the way he explains it makes me think of so many places to fish this when I honestly thought it was just a jig with a pivot and to be fished the exactly the same way , boy was a wrong haha . Thank you for your knowledge
Can’t wait to bring a swing-head jig to my smallmouth spot in Chicago! I was literally just thinking about the topic of this video earlier today. Another good one, thanks.
Very good explanation of these two techniques. I must admit, I don’t use a swing head as much as I should but with your explanation it is pretty clear I need to use it, especially with that Boss grub. Thanks.
Good description of the bait niches. I'll freely admit i need to fish a swing head more.... probably should add that to my objectives list for 22. Thanks for the vid.
Love the biffle head, I customize mine, paint the bottom half. Paired with the biffle bug or crazy flapper I fish in the salt, excellent for spotted bay bass, kelp bass, 😁
Hello & thanks for the videos! Do you have any for southern states or recommend a source like yours specifically for Georgia, Alabama and northern Florida lakes. Thanks a bunch!!! REEL ON !!!
Ive been building swinghead jigs with straight shank worm hooks for open water smallmouth use, mainly the great lakes. Awesome way to creep a little goby color swimbait or craw on bottom and get extremely consistent hookups with the exposed point
great topic, Matt! To add to what you said, I think smallmouth and spots eat a wobble head because they’re more aggressive than largemouth. I’m not saying largemouth can’t be aggressive, but we know how crazy spots and smallmouth can be. Lol. My favorite time to fish wobble head is actually at night!
For me the football jig is for long flats and deep we water. The wobble head is almost like a squarebill or a swim jig on the bottom. Hitting the bottom as you go.
Thanks for all the great information Matt I really do appreciate the job your doing . I hear you speak of lake break downs. Would it be possible for you to do one for Summersville Lake Wv ? We are it seems, a forgotten state of sorts.
ill put it on my list or you can specifically request one through fishthemoment.com personal lake breakdowns here fishthemoment.com/personal-lake-breakdown/fish-the-moment-personal-lake-breakdown-with-matt-stefan?rq=matt%20stefan
I started using the swing-head last year (spots) and was VERY please with the results. I PLANNED on trying a swimbait but the Chigger Craw was working to well LOL I really need to remember to check my line more often.. Gets frayed and then I lose fish. What line/test do you prefer? Thank you and great videos.
Love to throw the swing head another thing to mention I had a 100 percent hook up to land ratio with it this year.when you stick em with it they really have a hard time throwing the hook .thanks Matt
Jighead is a better year round bait, has secondary action, and can be presented in a variety of ways. Swinghead is 2-season focus, action/reaction specific but nice to be able to change the hooks, just watch out for those hang-ups
Since i’m always fishing from the banks , i lose a lot of crank baits. I think i will use the swing head more next year and since small mouths likes it it’s a win win , thank you Matt for the informations!
Thanks. That makes me feel good when l have been using a bait the way you suggest. Haha. I will sometimes take a swinghead with a creature. Toss it up to the bank, drag it some, hop it up and swim it a few feet and let it drop. Repeat. Sometimes they want it on the drag, sometimes the swim. Gives me an idea how the fish are feeling that day. Its also a nice way to get an idea what the bottom is like.
I like the swing head, but my lake has large and small mouth so it does seem to produce better so you are on to something there. I would usually use a green pumpkin menace and that was all it took, for some reason if I went to a rage Craw or a big creature bait then it cut the number of bites down also.
Awesome video Matt! Been wondering about this video and thanks for giving tip's on these bait's, they are two of my favorite ways to fish, thanks Matt!
Awesome info. I have a question. I recently just got a swing head and it has a skirt like a regular jig. Will this make a huge difference in how I should fish it? Thanks in advance!
More great breakdowns for the two baits✊ which rod do you use for your Pivot Point swing head and what gear ratio of your reel ? Thanks Matt for being so engaged with your subs. I definitely appreciate you 😜
Great insight on the Shaky head and the ability to cover water 👏 When fishing a football jig through small rock piles are there ways to trigger a bite that we may not consider 😉.
Thanks Matt! Very clear comparisons between the two types of jigs, how and where to use them. Up until this video, I knew nothing about swing head jigs. I will be getting some of these to try! Any videos you could recommend on how to rig them would be most appreciated! Texas rigged with a keeper? Is that a Berkeley head? Thanks!
I love the swing head / swimbait combo for Smallmouth. It's 100% deadly! Ideally I'd like to find a tungsten football head swing bait in 1 -1.5 oz with a stout 3/0 hook. That would be ideal for the St Lawrence. Any suggestions?
Thank you for you`re time and knowledge.
My pleasure!
Thanks Matt, Great Vid!
Glad you liked it!
Great . I have some swing heads but never used one . Now I know where .
Right on
Good info.
Thanks!
In an experiment I threw away 2 swing heads never even knowing what they are for. Now I have a clue. Thanks.
glad i could help
Right on great
thanks!
Thanks Matt. A very fun bite and agree with the crankbait similarities.
Glad you enjoyed it

Great videio subject ..... at Rayburn switched to hooking a fluke on that wobble head ... and even brush hog ... surprised me this month "
Good stuff
Thanks for the South Holston lake breakdown can’t wait to down load it and see your take on it.
Hope you enjoy it!
Swing head one of the best kept secrets down my part of the world . Adrenalin craw in Black / Blue , Pumkin for Large mouth
Nice!
Think I want to try swing/football heads for the quick change between a searchbait (swimbait), and maybe try a Trickworm, or floating-tail type bait for targeting cover...ala a pseudo shakey-head.
...to add...a 2 bait solution for 1 rod.
go for it
Always learn something on the channel. Swing for searching/small mouth and football for known structure/targets/lmb. Awesome stuff Matt!
Thanks 👍
I get the when and where between the swing head and the straight football jig. My question is when do I throw a c-rig vs a swing head?
good topic. i tend to throw a c-rig in the same areas as a football jig and therefore not where i throw a swing head
Thanks for the video Matt. I love throwing a swing head jig
me too
Gonna start running a swing-head with a backwards rigged ika, skirt side to the weight. Feel that’s gonna kill this Sunday AM at the Lehigh river
sounds good to me
Super helpful video. I literally just put a couple swingheads in my box last night to try to gain confidence in. And boom here this video is.
Glad it helped!
How about putting a heavy snap or split ring on the football jig to give it some more movement on retrieve? Wonder how that would work. 🤔
im not sure it would add much to the footbal jigbut i do add split rings to my wobble head. I have a video coming out soon on that!
I have had very good success with the swing head with a rage craw. Great explanation on when to use the two different types of jig heads. Greatly appreciated the insight.

Gives me some ideas for when spring comes, thanks, good tip as usual
Glad to help
Another great video,I put a few swing heads in my box this year.
good luck!
Love swing head on big rock and current .
sounds good to me!
I love your Chanel you seem to have the same fishing style as me with a spin on some of my favorite techniques that I never thought of before.
Glad you like them!
Maybe a big worm on a swing head might stir em up. Something new
yep!
Great
thanks!
Matt how do compare a swing head to a Carolina rig as far as its applications? I usually throw them in similar areas.
similar but i like to use a swing head for covering water and a carolina rig for fishing spots i know hold fish
Thanks for the insight!
Other plastics u like to use for smallie on swing head?
boss grub, small 3" swimbaits, speed craw
I'll be using a swing head at Havasu in February! Thanks Matt!
Good luck!
Would you use this around vegetation like hydrilla or reeds/Thules?
generally not. its more of a hard clean bottom technique
@@MattStefanFishing makes sense, thx!
Need to try a swing head! Thank you for the information sir!
Any time!
Great explanation. Thank you, Matt.

Great video Matt. And good luck this season 👍

MLF Pro Circuit
What trailer is that on the football jig
Berkley powerbait boss grub

I nose hook or skin hook a floated tube to a swinghead jig. That's m favorite rig to throw on a swinghead jig.
I throw a long ribbontail worm too, but the tube more often, since it has produced more fish for me.

Great info keep the jig advice coming I'm fishing nothing but jigs all winter maybe a homemade crankbait every once in a while
Nice!
I am a little confused..is a swing head the same as a shaky head?
nope swing head is a football head poured separate from the hook. a shakyhead is a jighead basically
What’re your thoughts on fishing a brush hog on a swing head. Is that a good pairing?
it works
Good video and info again Matt 🍻
Glad you enjoyed it

it really is but i prefer a swing head for flat gravel structure. long tappered points, bug flats, etc.
So virtually everywhere on table Rock. Where I live lol. Sometimes u just suck on your home pond lol
Can't use it on bottom on a lake with grass ?
you can but both get balled up pretty good
Great analogy! Opens my mind, to area's I'm fishing. Wondered about the swing head, and where it worked the best ! Once again, thanks Matt.
