When I started this video I thought I stumbled into the Bass Fishing for The Hells Angels Tutorial when I seen Matt with the coat all zipped and bundled up, the toboggan pulled down and the beard squared up; then I realized the Hells Angels already know how to throw and sling lead and hard to pull a Skeeter FXR Apex with a Chopper...good video as always. Switched to Dirty Jigs probably 4-5 years ago bc of you and Tim and haven't looked back. Best jigs on the market, but how come I haven't seen the Canterbury Crunch before? Gotta order some of those this evening
Matt or Tim, for us out here in the west around your old stomping grounds can you put together a little video on fishing rapidly rising water in the winter. As always thanks for everything! 🇺🇸 ✌️
Good stuff. If yens haven't already, try to set up a conversation with Tom Monsoor from LaCrosse WI. As you know he's a jig legend. No I never met or spoke with him.... only know of him. Then again.... maybe yens have already been able to talk with him. In my lifetime I've been able to sit down and talk with a couple "Old Timer Legends". An hour of their time is better than 10 years of experimenting. No... Not meant as a insult to your jig fishing knowledge/skills. As always thanks for the vids and your time.
The 3" Big Bite Baits Craw Worm is my favorite micro craw plastic. The little craw body section is a hollow tube. Leave on those extra segments at the tail when using it as a jig trailer. Or, pull those extra segments off the tail and use it as a Ned Rig. This is perhaps the most realistic shaped crawfish plastic, and in gin clear Great Lakes water, when visibility is 30 feet and you need to use 4-pound test fluorocarbon as a 20-foot leader, that REALISM can REALLY MATTER.
i love how one week, a bunch of youtubers say to downsize their jigs/trailers during the winter. Then they wait two weeks and say to go full size. And then repeat the cycle.
Matt, you and Tim are superstars when you bring us these videos. Your passion comes straight thru and gives us weekenders so much confidence in your lures and techniques. We sincerely appreciate your channel.
I went fishing this last Saturday and had gotten hung up in a tree that had floated to the middle of the river I fish and settled on bottom in about 4-5 ft of water. I was tied braid directly to the jig hoping for a big bite in the mid-50’s murky water. I wrapped the braid around a thick stick that was nearby and PULLED, figuring I was going to either break the connection knot or bend the hook. The “weak link” was not the braid or the hook but the weight of the tree and the suction of the mud. I put as much “ass” into pulling that line and the tree actually rotated and came towards me a few feet before giving me back my jig. The hook was slightly tipped up and the point sharp as it was when it came out of the package. The jig was a Dirty Jigs Pitching jig in Super Matt Brown. I’m seriously impressed with the hook on that jig, I cannot fathom needing a “No Jack” hook when the regular ones are that strong.
Btw, I know this is crazy but I like throwing a football head in thicker wood or roots, it seems that it never gets wedged just needs to be bumped against the cover until either a fish snatches it up or the jig managed to crawl through.
@Richard Bossman That makes sense to me. It sounds like your roots are like the Chicago chunk rock I fish with a football head jig. You DO NOT want to get wedged in between those slabs.
I always appreciate the detailed descriptions. I get so much of my stuff directly through your links. If it didn't ALL work well then I wouldn't be constantly resupplying and rewatching videos. I've gone back to videos years past to find exact info on tackle... none of that information is lost on me thank you.
Right Giants! My cousin got an 8 3 oz in Massachusetts on a jig last April.I was throwing Swimbaits. Hence, I'm picking up the jigs and Jerkbaits this spring. The Swimbaits will be incorporated this year not exclusively!! Lol
I got you on the explanation for the hula grub. Coming from a southerner thats trapped my fair share of craws. In the winter the craws will scoot on the bottom and bury their butts between warm rocks. That hula skirt mimics those back legs trying to dig in and latch to warm rock.
Other than newer plastics that are now super anatomically correct, Hula Grubs were the plastic trailer that mimics a crawfish the closest. "Claws" are up in the back, "crawly legs" are up front. I like the Chompers brand, also SOFT, and very stinky with GARLIC!
I’m with you, Matt. I’m equally obsessed with jig fishing. Not only do I have boxes of jigs…I have entire boxes and crates filled with skirt material, various jig heads and o-rings. I’ve gotten to the point where I think I’m going to start *tying* them…and I mean tying in the fly fishing sense. There are a few smallmouth guys who do it and I have most of the gear already due to my other habit (fly fishing for brook trout). With my jig making, the only component that feels like it could use improvement are the rubber o-rings. I could go the wire route but tying seems more interesting to me.
Matt really appreciate your in depth lessons on the jig, I believe it's one of my favorite ways to catch bass, never quit learning, thank y'all for the links helps tremendously!🎣
Nicholls football jig just like you said slowly pulling it keeping the line tight but hardly even moving it deadly I caught two monster so far this winter
Matt, anytime you talk about your passion for jig fishing, you explain how it surpasses your fanaticism for everything else you use. Today, you gave a nod to swimbaits as being second.🥈 I think to myself, JEEZ, aren't you the guy who weighed out the grams of replacement split rings and treble hooks for JERKBAITS?!?!? And JERKBAITS may only be THIRD or FOURTH in YOUR FANATICISM??? That's saying something.
My dad had old lures and Rapala baits in the tackle box but rarely saw him use them. There was this old hula grub with a bright orange head in the box. It was shaped like a pyramid almost with the flat side down and had fake eyes. I'll always remember that.
I fish the 5” hula grubs in pads and cover in the summer time. I Texas rig them. My buddy put me on those years ago at an old quarry we used to fish. That’s pretty much what got me started bass fishing. Hula grubs and senkos.
Watching that FG knot being tied hurts me just as bad as tying one myself. I can't sit there and tie one any longer after you guys promoted the blood knot, so easy and quick.
another spot on video. I’m throwing a 1/4 Picasso Little spotty with Chigger craw trailer. We have heavy grass and the lighter jig will come through that grass better. The Deeks Dead spin with a 2.8 kietech has been lights out.
Jig fishing is my main goal this year to get better at. So much so I just went and got a butt load of them. Went to an old jig video and got lots of the trailers you guys talk about. Thanks in advance for my new PB lol
The hula grub is definitely something else! Went to a new lake with some buddies but stopped by a local shop before and seen those and thought they would work really good and boy was I surprised. Both my buddies were asking for some after I kept catching em😂
Hey bud, you have got one of the best fishing channels on UA-cam in "my opinion ". Not only is there great fish catching, but very informative. I use the Yamamoto twin on my football head jigs as well and the hula grub on my Carolina rig. The football head works very well this time of year Oologah Lake (home lake) here in Oklahoma. Come fish it sometime.
Thanks Matt. No worries about most of this not applying to us down here in Florida; I still sat through it all. Chatterbaits have been the thing for me lately, "cold" water and all, but I have done well with jigs and twin-tail trailers this winter as well. I mainly use the Big Bite Baits twin-tail when I am just goofing around with a small jig at one of the Local Ponds. No frog fish yet this year, but I have had a couple swipe at it. All in all, the bite down this way has been very good for me so far this year. Don't take my word for it, though: load up the caravan, take 75 south and come see for yourself. Thanks again!
Tried to do this technique the other day in my local pond. Every time I brought in the jig covered in dead or light green grass. Switching to swimjigs and 6th hybrid jigs and trying again this weekend.
Thank Matt, Jig fishing is my favorite . Hulu grubs is also my favorite jig trailer. I notice that you are running a different rig it looks to be a Skeeter. :).
Not the middle finger Matt, the ring finger! 😆 Too funny, I was on the lake last week when those teens and 20's came through Arkansas trying to think of anything besides how darn cold I was and I hyper focused on Flippin the reel with my finger and which finger seems to work better. 🤣 The things we do to stay out and catch fish. Anyhow, it's the ring finger cause you have better control of the rod for a hookset with a jig. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis so maybe that has something to do with it. Tight lines buddy! Edit...BTW...that Hula Grub worked well last week with the Z-man football jig when they wouldn't bite a jig. Been using that HG since the early 90's for finicky SM. That Z-man micro jig with the mini bugs work great too, and it's got a small guard to keep it from hanging on rock.
Awesome video, great information!! Maybe y’all could do a winter video for us folks down south?🤷🏼♂️ I live in NE Fl and my favorite lake is still in the mid to low 50ish degrees, still got Kissimmee grass everywhere, 3-4ish ft of visibility but have been having a tough time getting bit. Seems like us Florida folks get forgot about when it comes to fishing tips😂 y’all do about the best job to include everywhere y’all can. Keep up the great job y’all!!🤘🏻🤘🏻
Have you ever thought of working with TW to put together 'kits' with everything needed for your favorite baits? That would make it so much easier for us to order.
Have you ever tried the Beast Coast baby bulldozer football jig? I like a lot of their colors and have enjoyed them. Just curious if you have ever tried them. Love all your content and how truly excited you are about bass fishing!!!!!
I cannot throw a jig. I lose them, every, single, time. Lol Side note, y’all have plans to try the Meta line from 13? Gerald Swindles new line. Interested in your opinions.
I’m in California and these winter storms have been filling up our lakes. You talked about fishing draw downs, how do you fish quick rising water with a jig?
Hey Matt! When you throw braid to leader with a long leader that comes back onto the reel, how do you avoid hurting your thumb when thumbing the spool on casts?
🍺I now have 12 NRX+ rods. I had to wait over a year to get many of them but I personally see no reason why you won’t love it. They are incredible rods, backed by a warranty that can not be beat. 🤠
Love the content! Question. I’m running a NRX+ CRR with 50lb maxcuatro braid with an FG knot to a 20lb fluro leader for sparse cover and casting. Heaviest I go is a 1/2oz mainly because I’m not fishing in any more than 6-8 in south Louisiana. Do you think this set up is too light? I have a tatula elite 7’3” with straight 20lb fluro for heavier cover. Thanks!
Matt's obsessed with jig fishing? I'm willing to bet, looking at his lure collection, he's obsessed with ALL lure techniques 😄 I should know, as I'm a lure junkie as well..hey Matt, if u see this...what is your LEAST favorite lure/technique?
So, respectfully… if I do live in the Deep South… what should I be doing since a lot of this “doesn’t apply to me”? I love these videos because they’re so detailed, but I always feel like at the end I get the “sorry southerners it’s different for you”
Question. Is that your skeeter? Or Tim’s? Or did you both acquire a skeeter? Lol I always thought you were in a champion but noticed the skeeter in the gear review videos and I assumed it was Tims boat. Just curious is all. If you did get a new boat, what did you do with the champion? Wanna sell it?! 😂
why are retailers not required to put the materials used on there products. i cant tell you how many times i try to buy fishing gear online but have to return it due to lead laws in my state.
It's no big deal at all. We actually have a handful of "where do bass go in Winter" videos that will tell you exactly where to fish. You don't have to see them to catch them 👍🏼
*Amazing video and thank you for breaking it down!! Despite the economic downturn, I'm so happy I have been earning $ 60,000 returns from my $9,000 investment every 21days📌📌✅*

Just watched Greg Blanchard take first place at Shasta using a jig with a Gary Y crazy flapper
Wasn’t he using a flappin hog?
Flapping hog is the only thing I’ve seen Greg use but still, anything TB says, I’m taking it in, they are who they are.
Love watching Greg Blanchard I’ve taken on punching cause of him
Ya I was wrong with the yama bait name
Matt or Tim, for us out here in the west around your old stomping grounds can you put together a little video on fishing rapidly rising water in the winter. As always thanks for everything! 🇺🇸 ✌️

Yamamoto Hula Grub has been in my arsenal forever. Even before a Senko. They’re awesome 😎
i love how one week, a bunch of youtubers say to downsize their jigs/trailers during the winter. Then they wait two weeks and say to go full size. And then repeat the cycle.
I dare you to do a video on winter BANK fishing! What lures would you use?
Loved the OTW FG knot session lol. Good thing you didn't need the net.
Matt, you and Tim are superstars when you bring us these videos. Your passion comes straight thru and gives us weekenders so much confidence in your lures and techniques. We sincerely appreciate your channel.
You guys are without a doubt the best at detailing content love the video and the descriptions

Nicholls football jig just like you said slowly pulling it keeping the line tight but hardly even moving it deadly I caught two monster so far this winter

I love the hula grub my favorite for Texas rig
This is the video I hoped you'd be posting!!!

Someone is loving that skeeter. Ain't been seeing the champs much.
I was amazed at the dude tying the fg on the boat lol takes me 10 minutes to do in my room
Those are some awesome tips!
My pb is on a jig cause of a video I watched of yours the night before. 9lbs 8oz on a black n blue jig
Watching that FG knot being tied hurts me just as bad as tying one myself. I can't sit there and tie one any longer after you guys promoted the blood knot, so easy and quick.
another spot on video.

Matt, finally got a largemouth on the bare jig head using the yamamoto cowboy 👍
Thanks Matt, the minute my 844 gets here im off to Oroville with couple bags of hula grubs. Can't wait!
Fished a bitsy bug with a beaver here yesterday in the snow. No bites but it was still nice being on the water
Jig fishing is my main goal this year to get better at. So much so I just went and got a butt load of them. Went to an old jig video and got lots of the trailers you guys talk about. Thanks in advance for my new PB lol
Great stuff Matt, thanks for the "why" behind it all, that's so helpful always!
STOP talking about the Hula Grub your letting thee cat out of the bag lol It was all most forgotten about. Timely video for me thanks Matt
The hula grub is definitely something else! Went to a new lake with some buddies but stopped by a local shop before and seen those and thought they would work really good and boy was I surprised. Both my buddies were asking for some after I kept catching em😂

Nice video. I caught my pb 23”-24”on a mini jig with a tiny hook.
Excellent presentation today. Than you for the simple approach. Works well for my kayak fishing.
The dt hula grub has been a staple in Ozark lakes since they were released in the 80’s, throw that on table rock and you’ll catch a fish year round
Hula grub with no weed guard is the juice in NorCal highland reservoirs. Matt and Tim probably wrecked them here on that.
PERFECT!! Greats from Spain!!
Not the middle finger Matt, the ring finger! 😆

That 5" moto dt grub is 🔥
When I lived in Nashville I was bank fishing slow rolling a swim bait I was smashing smallmouth
Great great video Matt.
I may use this information today
Thanks for another great video.

Great video!!!!
Have you ever thought of working with TW to put together 'kits' with everything needed for your favorite baits? That would make it so much easier for us to order.
Good idea 👍
You should try the 7ft 4in 6th sense Milliken fishing rod it is a fabulous dragging rod for the price
Great video Matt!
Is it just me, or does it look like the clouds over your right shoulder of the video seems to have some sort of writing in them.😳😳
Have you ever tried the Beast Coast baby bulldozer football jig? I like a lot of their colors and have enjoyed them. Just curious if you have ever tried them. Love all your content and how truly excited you are about bass fishing!!!!!
Thanks for the video. What are you’re thoughts on pork
I cannot throw a jig. I lose them, every, single, time. Lol
Side note, y’all have plans to try the Meta line from 13? Gerald Swindles new line. Interested in your opinions.
Would that tournament happen to have been on Lake Oroville?
Do you recommend any jig fishing now in South Florida?
I’m in California and these winter storms have been filling up our lakes. You talked about fishing draw downs, how do you fish quick rising water with a jig?
If I've really grown attached to a finesse football do I need to have a finesse ball head in my arsenal?
Hey Matt! When you throw braid to leader with a long leader that comes back onto the reel, how do you avoid hurting your thumb when thumbing the spool on casts?
Planning to get NRX + 873crr. I’m excited to drag some jigs🔥
🍺I now have 12 NRX+ rods. I had to wait over a year to get many of them but I personally see no reason why you won’t love it. They are incredible rods, backed by a warranty that can not be beat. 🤠
Do you always look for the presence of bait before determining where to jig fish?
Love the content! Question. I’m running a NRX+ CRR with 50lb maxcuatro braid with an FG knot to a 20lb fluro leader for sparse cover and casting. Heaviest I go is a 1/2oz mainly because I’m not fishing in any more than 6-8 in south Louisiana. Do you think this set up is too light? I have a tatula elite 7’3” with straight 20lb fluro for heavier cover.
Thanks!
Which jacket are you wearing Matt?
There is nothing like trying to tie a fg knot while someone is hooking fish in the front of the boat 😂(13:46)
Matt's obsessed with jig fishing? I'm willing to bet, looking at his lure collection, he's obsessed with ALL lure techniques 😄 I should know, as I'm a lure junkie as well..hey Matt, if u see this...what is your LEAST favorite lure/technique?

Welcome to the club…..we get hate cuz we have 2 seasons instead of 4……hot n wet

Where would you go on rock bluff dam?
What jacket are you wearing?
Why are you using straight fluoro on your micro jigs vs. braid to mono or braid to fluoro like you're using on your big jig?
So, even, say, 35 degree water, you'd fish the top of points/humps/etc with the jig? ...or are you talking about off the drop off?
why are retailers not required to put the materials used on there products. i cant tell you how many times i try to buy fishing gear online but have to return it due to lead laws in my state.
Hey Matt. Good stuff as usual!!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. Wondering if you have a preference on jig line ties. Horizontal, or vertical? Does it matter? Thanks
90 degree usually for rocks and stuff 45 for like a Shakey head I'd depends on the jig
But how do you keep your feet warm in flip flops?
8:09 who up pulling they thing on they mud bottom?
Matt I want to fish these football jigs but I don't have electronics on my boat. How do I go about finding fish with them this winter...Thanks
It's no big deal at all. We actually have a handful of "where do bass go in Winter" videos that will tell you exactly where to fish. You don't have to see them to catch them 👍🏼
@@tacticalbassin awesome I will kick back and watch them.. Thanks
Full time fishing?
Jig fishing in the winter isn't easy here...everything is frozen :-(
First!🥇🏆🙌🏻🎣
Well I know what color is gunna be sold out today Dammit lol
Idk if it’s just me or does that cloud look like it has words in it??
👍😎
Again with the hula grub shhhh!
