Went to see it last night; Mark Kermode is right on the button. The gentleness, the allowing the characters to be themselves and the emotional intelligence is very high. It's brilliant. Go see it!
This is a truly beautiful film, everything was perfect. The acting is spectacular all-around, especially the glorious Saoirse, Domhnall Gleeson who has had an amazing year with this film, Star Wars, and Ex Machina, the mother, the priest played by Jim Broadbent, her young Italian boyfriend, etc etc etc. The story is old-fashioned in the BEST way (as in people are people with good and bad and not just bad as is usually the case in today's films -- also the characters develop in realistic ways), the production design is gorgeous, and I just can't rave about it enough truly. My wife sobbed like a baby during this film. It really is such a beautiful film.
As someone who has grown up in Co. Wexford, done the live abroad thing and recently come home again, I felt like I was watching what it's really like. Living abroad is all fun and games till you get that call where theres a funeral happening and you're too far away to attend.
I agree with everything said in this review. I was lucky to work on this film. I orchestrated Michael Brook's gorgeous score. What Kermode says about the score is spot on is and one of the things I love most about Michael's music. He did such a masterful job at hitting the right emotion at the right time without ever falling into melodrama. The whole film is such a joy. I think I may have even mentioned to John Crowley how the film felt like an old school film in the best possible way. And Saoirse is truly fantastic as is Emory Cohen as Tony.
It is a great film It's one of those that you will watch again and again in the years to come. It's one of those that if you come across it while channel surfing you will stop and watch it to the end regardless of where you pick it up. When Mark mentions the music, remembering that scene brought tears to my eyes. It's a must see. And, if you collect movies it is a, "Must Own".
What about Emory Cohen? He was great as a young American New Yorker in the 50’s. He was what so many women wanted--a man who loved a woman and would give it his all to build his world around her. Given the opportunity he would make a great on screen lover. I would like to see Himin more screen roles like this.
This film is rightly considered as one of the 100 most important films in film history and generations of acting students will take Brooklyn as a prime example of how to tell a story.
Excellent review Mark! I love "Brooklyn" also and think Saorise is brilliant. This is jone of the finest ensemble casts put together where every character is memorable. The story is timely in terms of the immigration sags and the value of immigrants. My one disappointment/concern is why it is not garnering the attention it deserves from theater goers. Go see it people.
22grena Yeah but there's a lot of gorgeous sound I have trouble making with my mouth. But honestly it's just a name I always feel I'm pronouncing wrong.
One thing I NEED TO KNOW: what was the thing that was on the center table in Bartocci's? At first I though it was a cash register, but I have never seen a cash register look like that. i even tried searching it up.
I enjoyed the film - interesting subject, very well acted. A bit slow overall. I really don't like the crystal cleanness which clouds reality. 1950s Ireland and Brooklyn just would not look like that. The Atlantic crossing scenes were very staged too. Forgive my nit picking and see it soon!
Director John Crowley delivers A heart warming, beautiful, stylish, very well acted & well crafted period love story that could be one of 2015’s best films. (98%) (5/5 stars) (positive)
I don't think he is expressing himself enough to let us know how he really feels about the movie. Only kidding. Yes, it was a great movie. It was really tough on Saorise because it brought back memories of her family moving to the US and being born in the Bronx. Filming a few miles from where she was brought up in Ireland where she ran into old classmates during the filming was uncomfortable for her since she always wanted to keep her acting business career separate form her home town so that was difficult for her. She was happy to make the film in her Irish accent which she has never done before because she only would do that if it was a real story that had meaning with feelings from the character and was not just an Irish history film.
While I really did enjoy the film, I found it somewhat underwhelming. The film was truly engaging, funny and heart-warming in equal measure. But I really can't shake the feeling that after just one watching of the trailer practically the entire plot of the film was given out, and I feel there could have easily been more of the story to tell. The only part of the film I didn't already know after seeing the trailer was the final 10 minutes. Maybe not a fault as such with the film, but the trailer (that said I couldn't think of a way to advertise the film without it, but still)
I don't think this film was subtle at all...the colours, the cinematography, the score, the melodrama...everything seemed to be signposted. I do not agree with this review...except for the performances maybe, they're great, no doubt:
Agree with Mark, it's a beautiful film. He failed to mention Emory Cohen though, his performance was captivating too.
Ali Boyd agreed, he is so warm, patient, adoring, and sexy

Not often I hear Mark shout out that much for a film. It must be a must see.
+john leto it is. TRULY. Don't miss it on the big screen.
+bookwormsurfer Will be seeing it over Xmas and probably tomorrow night. ..thanks
At the start of the review "I really liked it" at the end "I loved it."
As someone who has grown up in Co. Wexford, done the live abroad thing and recently come home again, I felt like I was watching what it's really like.

I can't agree more with Mark Kermode on this. An absolutely brilliant film and the film itself is like a novel tbh.

Kermode nails it once again. Excellent insight to an insightful and excellent movie.

If ever there was a review that made me want to see the movie, it´s this.
It is a wonderful film with subtle and skillful acting.
Just back. WOW. Most beautiful film of all time. BEAUTIFUL.
Yup...a truly beautiful film. One of the best I've EVER seen.
Just seen this, such a sweet lovely easy to watch... And to fall completely in love with.
I cannot believe how good this film was. It has pretty much everything in spades.
I enjoyed it more than Carol.
Great review, and absolutely one of the best films of the year. Absolutely breathtaking.
"THIS FILM... is quite subtle."
+PauLtus B AS IS your quip ;P
David Lean quip?
oldmoviemusic Aha.
But don't give me credit for that joke...
Saw this tonight. Loved it!

Loved Loved Loved this film. I want to know, did Mark shed a tear?
This film is rightly considered as one of the 100 most important films in film history and generations of acting students will take Brooklyn as a prime example of how to tell a story.
Great film, and as always an honest. passionate review from Mark.
The review, and the clip, really make it sound interesting.
Beautifully put , one of my fav films ❤
well this got me from not wanting to see it to wanting to see it. good job mr kermode.
That last part of the review done it for me, I have to go check this out! :D
+Brendan McCallion Just saw it. Most beautiful film of all time.

Kermode at his best
I’d love to see a sequel,a portrait of the immigrant communities in New York
Wow great praise for Saoirse Ronan and Brooklyn.
Saw it, terrific. It's going to be showered with awards.
I really like Saoirse Ronan.
I still can't pronounce her name though.
Emmet Purcell I think it's a bit like that yeah. But still sorta weird to actually say it.
22grena Yeah but there's a lot of gorgeous sound I have trouble making with my mouth.
But honestly it's just a name I always feel I'm pronouncing wrong.
Ian P Cool I didn't know that.
+PauLtus B as Emmet say below its pronounced "seer-sha"
22grena Well I'm Dutch. My English is and decent I understand German to a degree.
I know things sound different in different languages.
Beautiful film! All the awards.🏆🏆🏆
This sounds interesting.
Great review
One of the most moving films I've ever watched. Saoirse Ronan was terrific.
One thing I NEED TO KNOW: what was the thing that was on the center table in Bartocci's? At first I though it was a cash register, but I have never seen a cash register look like that. i even tried searching it up.
the film was spectacular
Yes it was. Stunning cinematography and costume design.
This movie just screams Oscar and BAFTA!
+Luvie1980 But the thing Is it's getting rave reviews across the board. For a film that the trailer sells as a romantic movie that's impressive.
+Luvie1980 It just has me screaming "AAAAAAHGHGH I don't want to see it THERE IS NO APPEAL"

I loved this film. Beautiful and tragic.
It's a lovely little film. 7.5/10
While I really did enjoy the film, I found it somewhat underwhelming. The film was truly engaging, funny and heart-warming in equal measure. I agree the trailer was too revealing, but also, knowing the plot beforehand doesn't take away the value from a high quality movie
See it.
An extraordinary film. Saoirse Ronan is spellbindingly brilliant.
totally agree
If you love Brooklyn..try..Flirting..and Local Hero..if you haven't already..
Ronan is excellent, she is a rare talent but , Julie Walters steals every scene she is in.
The film is better than the book.
anyone who has seen Intermission will get the little 'punchy' quip Mark laid on us there ;) None one centurion..
Sounds great, but... "hasn't put a foot wrong." Ummm, 'The Host'...
City of ember, violet and daisy
Baron light romance movie which has no greater depth of character and story than the trailer
I don't think this film was subtle at all...the colours, the cinematography, the score, the melodrama...everything seemed to be signposted. I do not agree with this review...except for the performances maybe, they're great, no doubt:
Really surprised by all the outstanding reviews for this, the trailer made this look like sentimental schlock of the worst variety
+oneminutetomidknight I think its Ronan in fairness. She appears to have the magic about her.
This movie was good but that kid was a terrible actor.
u boats hotdogs farts
I liked this movie but the love triangle was unnecessary.
You've ruined the film here, Mark. Two love interests? Let people watch for themselves.
