00:08:31 - I'll bet this is because the thickness of the copper windings is optimized for this low kv variant of the motor. For anyone that doesn't know what I'm getting at, it's very common for the manufactures to set their machines up with the thinnest wire for their low kv motor and then not retool the machine with thicker wire for the higher kv versions of the motor which use less turns per stator pole

I'm using rcinpower 0802 on my 75mm with biblades, and i like it. Sometimes I even fly it with 300 mah folded cells battery, and it's complitely fine. They're also pretty durable, I used to use old happymodel motors, and they had their shafts bending and rotor separating all the time, but rcinpower never does that

So the motors with ball bearings are the most efficient. It would be great to have a direct comparison, e.g. the BetaFPV 0702s in 27000kv with bushings and bearings.

@@imothyif you are just cruising around you don't need that high kV. Normally we (the company I work for, not drone motors) measure kv at the nominal voltage with no load.
It’s not always as linear as you’d think but a measurement in the lower 10-20 % and at 100% nominal Voltage should give you a good idea what’s going on.
Oh and +- 10% for the kv value is fair.

One motor seems kind of odd to me, the RCinPower 0802 27kkv performs worse than lower kv versions of the same motor.
A friend of mine has a pair of these and i hate them, they are almost impossible to tune on any rig, the esc keeps overheating and they kill the 300mah batteries way faster than anything else i have seen. And seing how they compare to the lower kv versions, makes me think that they might have some issues.

    • @ChrisRosser
      @ChrisRosser  3 місяці тому +1

This can sometimes come down to the exact wire diameter used in the motor. Sometimes going to a higher KV doesn't allow thicker wire to be used. Then performance can suffer.

Love the testing, but I think the efficiency weightings might need to be done slightly differently if we are trying to determine the "best" motors.
eg. On an identical setup with a 300mah batt, the RCInPower 27000kv give me maybe 2min flight times, whereas with the happymodel 28000kv or betafpv 27000kv I get 3-3:30. I know the RCinPower provide a lot more power but this kind of trade off in efficiency is too much of a sacrifice in my eyes.

Strange. I have RCinPower 29000kv in my air65 setup and I have similar flight time as on betafpv 27000kv motors: 3:15-3:30 on LAVA 260mAh. I'm using preset from Chris Rosser for tiny whoops BF 4.5.

I've asked happymodel about their kV testing before and they said they check the rpm at 1v. It's probably this lower voltage which ends up messing with the numbers.
But it's interesting they are consistently lower. They have always been regarded as the most efficient, but it looks like that's because they are lower kV. And I thought rcinpower understated their kV but it's the actual kV 😂

Issue, that these motors have very short shaft: only 3.2mm instead of ~5mm on happymodel 28000kv or betafpv 27000kv. And only one props are fit OK - Gemfan 1208-3. Gemfan 1210-2 doesn’t hold at all on the shaft. Gemfan 1219-3 can be used, but it often flies off the shaft during crashes. HQ 31mm Ultralight 3-Blade Propellers - the same thing as for Gemfan 1219-3. I'm taking about totaly new props.

Hi Chris, please watch this video I just posted. I lightened an O3 air unit beyond the ultra-lite level, by removing the bottoms of the shield cans from the board, and modifying the copper-tube dipole antennas. May even remove the plug later and replace with directly soldered, very light wires for an additional 0.5g.
Please look for the latest posted video under my name, it won't let me post a link for some reason.
I may need some help rewinding an 0702 motor to work with 2S power without a throttle limit, if it can be done. I have 0.10mm and 0.15mm magnet wire to do the rewinding, can't fit any more of the 0702 original 0.20mm wire on the stators otherwise I'd do that. There was 5 or 6 turns on each of the 9 stator slots, I'm trying to go up to 10 or 12 turns, impossible with the 0.20mm wire. The motor was originally wound in a WYE arrangement (not DELTA), which is rare for high kV motors (28 or 29k originally). As is, the 0702 motors get extremely hot, even with a throttle limit, on 2S (especially HV) power, which really shortens flight times because of wasted energy as heat, even if they don't burn out. I had to go to 0802 - 16,000kv motors to get reasonable flight times, (slightly above 4 minutes for a 65mm whoop carrying an O3 air unit, 31mm Azi props), but may be able to achieve better times if I can rewire 0702 motors if they can still be kept close to the original weight of 1.5g each, I can probably go up to 1.6 - 1.7g if needed. The 0802 motors (4 of them) are quite a bit heavier. Your knowledge of motor design would be appreciated. Thank you
    Best regards
