Years ago, I was selling to a big box retailer. They had busted a large theft ring where the people would come in and purchase high-dollar tools, tv, and computers and take them home. There they would weigh the items and take a photo of the item before opening and save all the labels, then remove the packaging. Once the item was removed, then made up sandbags in the exact amount of the item and placed it inside the packaging and box. They then heat-wrapped the package using a handheld heat gun so if you saw the item, and reapply or reprint the labels...if you saw it, you would say it was perfect. It passed every store return visit over 290 before the ring was busted. The final thing they would do is to place a small mark on the package using a sharpie so they knew once it was back on the shelf to push it to the rear of the inventory so nobody would purchase it or if the inventory was low, they would place it in a shopping cart and take it to another place in the store and basically "hide it" behind slow-selling items. The ring was busted on its 291st visit when the return of a large screen tv started to leak sand from one of the cardboard corners after the woman returning had it knocked off of her shopping cart. She panicked and ran out the door, leaving the tv and her purse with the tv along with the receipts of other returns made. Once the store opened the box, they looked into other returns and found more "sandboxes". The group stole an estimated million dollars in goods before getting caught based on security footage and credit card purchases-yes, they actually tried to get "airline miles" from this as well using their real names. Had they not gotten so greedy chances are they would have been hard to catch or even prove.
That store must’ve not sold a damn thing to have 291 items sitting around on shelves and whoever does the stocking should be fired because that’s a whole lot of things that are not in the right place.
There's a good solution for that: Open up the boxes, and check that the product which was returned is in the box. I know, way too easy. Also, how many stores could they cheat that way? You can't just return the products in another subsidiary, at least that's how it is here.

My wife is a manager of a large retail chain and says that it is practically impossible to have someone charged for theft. Of the tens of thousands of dollars of products stolen each year very few people are ever prosecuted.

IF we had a REAL justice system instead of the wussified farce most states have that would actually PROSECUTE and not plea bargain a criminal's time because they are either too incompetent or too lazy to do their jobs this could be stopped along with murderers, drunk, distracted or drugged drivers. My wife is a manager of a large retail chain and says that it is practically impossible to have someone charged for theft. Of the tens of thousands of dollars of products stolen each year very few people are ever prosecuted.
