Staff prey on dementia patients because they make lousy witnesses. My mom made multiple LUCID comments, always about the same staffer, who she said hits her. I had photos of her looking like this 90 year old woman was a boxer. Huge lacerations-and they never treated her. Needed MANY facial stitches. Couldn’t be bothered to take her to the toilet. Put her into diapers that she didn’t yet need, cuz it was easier.

G4S is the biggest security company in the world and they just merged with Allied Universal. Good luck taking them down. Most of the employees are very respectable and have great work ethic. I work at a site where the client demands G4S employees to either have a degree in criminal justice, 3yrs law enforcement, or 3yrs active duty military experience. Not all clients demand such high quality candidates. Like the DoJ for example. These guards were making barely over minimum wage and didn’t have to have any prior experience. This situation should be on the DoJ as well, just like the sheriff said in the video.

I’ve worked at DJJ for almost 17.5 years in a Detention Center. I had to retire because of a heart attack. It’s causes a lot of stress. We got juveniles from all walks of life. I was there before we had uniforms and a radios. They put one staff maybe two on a Mod with over thirty juveniles. Crimes ranging from shoplifting to rape and murder. They finally gave us a badge, uniform, and a radio. You had to look out for the health and welfare of each every child. A child that could care less about his own parents and could care even less about you! They send you to a training academy to certify you in take down youth that are out of control, wether it be mentally or physically. The average youths I’ve seen in detention were 8 to 21 years of age and they’re always hungry. So that means we have to protect the smaller youths from the larger youths. You might be fortunate enough to work with a good staff that didn’t work a previous 8 hour shift. If you never worked in a detention center. You won’t have a clue about how evil youths can be. I can tell you stories that will make you throw up. It got to the point where admin staff have to participate in quelling disturbances. I know you say, if it was so bad, why didn’t you leave? Well, you had your share of bad kids as well as the good kids. I actually came across some youth that were, “caught at the wrong place at the wrong time” and some that were innocent. My heart went out to them. We use to refer to the dorms as the “Pit”. This is where we would interact with the 30 plus youths that been locked up until the next shift starts. You don’t know if they had a good day or a bad day. So, I don’t know if the youth been to court or not, or if the youths got more time. The youths always say that if they don’t get out, they punch the first staff they see. Woman or man, they don’t care. They play you against the administration because they know can can get you fired or put off the mod until after the investigation. The sheriff is on point about DJJ policies. They need to be corrected. I had to escort youths to residential facilities before.

Many good staff members have been injured, and fired because of bogus stories about these youth. You are right all of these juveniles are not bad but most are that’s way they are in djj in the first place. If you haven’t worked for djj or a program run n under them, you will never fully understand the struggles of dealing with juvenile youth.

You're correct. I own a private security company (G4S is a competitor of mine) reason why the staff was told to not report any assaults on themselves by the inmates is because then the policy would say that more staff would need to be on site based on the amount of assaults. Which cuts into their profits. 8 million per year, cost for the amount of staff and other expenses total to about 4.7 million per year. So, profit is between 3 to 3.3 million per year. Adding another 20 staff members would have still had a profit margin of, 23% now keep in mind, the average private security profit margins for the year 2022 was 16% in, 2021 it was 19% and 2020 it was 20%. So, even with adding another 20 staff members to the prison per month, would have still retained above industry average profit margins. With having such minimum staff, profit margins were around 34.3% for G4S. Greedy!!!

Sheriff Grady since 2006 in Tennessee , I have seen excellent programs in place cut to save money at the expense of out youth. Tennessee also needs a complete overhaul in the juvenile justice and also the child protective service programs and the administration , its all about cutting programs, cutting staff and leaving case mangers with heavy caseloads , that are not manageable , high turnover ,low pay resulting in many inexperienced employees to deal with the your effectively, all while the upper management are compensated with huge salaries, I have almost 35 years experience and do not see it getting any better until drastic changes are put in place and our youth become a government and community priority, I would love to assist in these changes but too low in the chain of command to have any input unfortunately , thanks for having the courage to call theses people and agencies out!

Nobody in state government truly cares what happens to the children placed in these juvenile justice facilities. Even when they are run not by private industry but supervised by the state.
Each state should and must have an inspector general appointed to investigate all reports of abuse and criminal behavior. The investigators of the OIG must be state law enforcement officers.
No matter who supervises our delinquent children abuse and crimes will occur.

I have since had friends that live there and I have always liked it. But, I have especially become fond , envious of Sheriff Grady Judd. I live in north metro Atlanta, and we might have a good sheriff, but unless he gets shot or arrested we never hear from him or about him. Grady demonstrates how a sheriff should do his job, uphold the constitution, and most of all COMMUNICATE WITH THE PEOPLE TO LET THEM KNOW WHAT HE IS DOING AND THAT NO ONE IS OUT OF HIS REACH!

Children, who are shuttled around, lose most of their possessions to the "Foster Home" when they are released to adoption, or, back to their parents! Another injustice, because, Ipads, Cell phones, Bicycles, Skate Boards, clothing, shoes, toys, and all the charging equipment, can be sold at great profit on the Internet! Oh, did I forget to mention all the prescription psychopathic medications, many selling for $20.00 a pill??? While I do not support "for profit" incarceration, I can tell you - they are NOT the ONLY major problem in the Juvenile Justice system. I was not a contractor, I worked as a sworn officer DIRECTLY for D.J..J. in a facility owned and operated ENTIRELY by D.J.J. (State of Florida). Our budget was so bad that even at $12.50/hr, we could only afford a bare bones staff. We operated on minimum numbers AND did not have the funding (unless we cut officers) to hire people to do most of the maintenance, so........ WE did it! Painted floors, sanded walls, the Super Intendant himself MOWED our lawn. D.J.J. needs an overhaul, not just the elimination of "For Profit" contacts. I worked that job for less than a year which was considerably longer than several other folks.

Knowing that Florida's youth programs are this flawed and that facilities are under investigation and still sentencing juveniles to serve in them makes law enforcement and the courts complicit in their continued abuse. Since we know individuals get sexually abused while they're incarcerated and the system continues to incarcerate them without taking steps to eliminate this abuse makes that system part of that sexual abuse as well.
