- This is my love letter to Patti Austin. These songs are from the Carry On CD.
How Can I Be Sure was done by The Rascals.
I've attempted to do a timeline of her life from her parents, Gordon and Edna Austin's, wedding photo to her winning her long-awaited Grammy award after more than fifty years in the music business.
Patti made her debut into the world on August 10, 1950. She had to lie about her age in the early part of her career so she could tour so she is sometimes listed as being born in 1948.
The butterflies surround her late mother because of a special pact that Patti said they agreed on that the butterflies would symbolize her being there after her death. She would come to her in the form of a butterfly.
You will also see photos of all of her albums in discography order, pictures of her with Alicia Keys and Patti Labelle singing at Luther Vandross' funeral and a crystal ornament that she designed.
Patti has a brother Clyde and she has worked with Luther. I have an old picture of her with Luther but I can't find it right now. I'll be sure to add it to my future love letters. Quincy Jones said that she has a photographic ear. Rest in peace Mr. Gordon Austin, trombonist and Mrs. Edna Austin.
The pictures are from a lifetime of collecting scrapbook photos, TV Guide articles and hours on eBay.
Enjoy. If you're a fan join the Patti Austin group!

Thanks.
You rock, Blueskywatcher! You are a true Patti fan.
OH MY.. Patti Awesome. Love the history. She just gets better and better. Her gift of love..
She made that song her own without going over the top with it.
I first paid attention to this song in the early 90's on Superstars Of The NBA Vol. 2 when this song was played in tribute to Magic Johnson when he abruptly retired after getting HIV. I get glassy eyed when I hear this song. A thousand times THANK YOU!!!
Her rendition of the Rascals How Can I Be Sure was excellent. Quite heartfelt.
I don't think I have ever met a woman regardless of her size who did not "feel" she should lose at least ten pounds, lol. It's ridiculous! Miss Austin is beautiful... and she was quite large at one time... even then she was beautiful even then ! I love her voice and she has the most beautiful eyes. I have seen and kept up with her a great deal throughout her career and she appears to be quite down to earth. As she has reached this point in time in her life and career I still think she's fabulous. I say all this because she has not had the commercial success her talent deserves. Billie Holiday and Nina Simone are prime examples of my characterization of their talent not reflecting the commercial success they should have, especially during their lifetimes. She is greatly content and happy with herself and career and is not bitter, but has become better with time. Miss Austin is a class act !
Wow I did not know that
nice love letter...nice voice...nice song:)
I love this song and her rendition of How Can I Be Sure. She brought a good interpretation of that song which stands a great classic.
Thank you so much of your kind words.
This is the REAL!!!!!Wow!!!Amazing!!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you. :)
You're welcome.
This is wonderful! I am a huge Patti Austin fan. I own 24 of her albums from "End of a Rainbow" through the Grammy-winning "Avant Gershwin." Her latest, "Sound Advice" will be released on May 17th. I can't wait! Thank you for putting her beautiful voice and music to your collection of memories and sharing them with us all.
You're welcome. It's really sad that such a great song didn't and doesn't receive more airplay.
her version of the Rascals song is fantastic. years ago i would call a help center for technical support and this song would play in the background. I had the help person go ask their HR manager to look at the tape and get the artist for me as I loved this song so much. and here it is! i finally found the CD and bought it years later.
LOL, I do try to be. I had this in my head for a few days and I said since she did a love letter to Ella, she deserved one too. I wanted people to know that some of us have been watching her for decades. DECADES, Ilechin!!!
What a beautiful dedication! Thanks for creating this audio-visual collage.
Another Genius !! ....💓😍💓
Wo I didn't know that wow she's still beautiful
lovely version
Yeah! That's where I first heard this song too! Heck, this song introduced me to Patti! :D

The Rascals. Thanks for that information. I will add it to my description.
OMG!!!!!! I wanna do dis song ova so bad.... PRICELESS!!!!!!
@scottarooni I am so glad that someone like you, a true fan, got to see this and appreciate it. I'm truly impressed by your collection. I can't wait for the new album and I wonder what genre. Are you on her Facebook page?
You really are smitten with Patti, huh? I was like that in the 70s and 80s, but more with her voice. I would even try to only work with female vocalist that could sing like her (Sabrina Johnston, Zenobia Conkerite)! But it seems like you really, really "have it" for her :-) Cool.
She actually mentioned it on the old tape I have of when she was on the Suzanne Somers show. She was making Swedish meatballs out of ground turkey. (Oh, you didn't know Patti could get down in the kitchen? She can cook too.) Suzanne asked her how she knew how to make it and Patti said that her grandmother was Swedish. She didn't say on her mother's side but it seems pretty obvious by her mother Edna's fairness. May Edna Austin rest in peace.
@Keedeeg It was fun making it. Thanks.
Which song?
Her grandmother was Swedish.
@voltaldix Sigh... me too.
Could you post her version of "Lazy Afternoon",
specially if it somewhat close to the quality
of Morgana King's version.
(Sofar MK is the best!)
Ooh, good idea.
You know my secret.
