      I have actually been *planning* on making one of these for forever now! I have the fabrics, the boning, and after watching you I realized that oops, I need grommets! Now I have a bit more confidence that I really can pull it off, and in a few days, too! Thanks Shannon!

      I will, I made a denim dress that has been asking me why has it never been out of the wardrobe, answer: because I need something better than a belt to make it look good on me.
      So red linen and black corduroy to start. If it comes out nice another in blue linen and a printed cotton (this one may need interfacing...).
      And there are a lot of other pieces of fabric too small for vests but perfect for this.

    I went through a time finding a better way of marking black or dark fabrics during covid. Basically, I used my paper skills and my knowledge of The Art of orgami to come up with a well fitting, mask pattern. The chalk was not exact enough for me and smaller projects. White colored pencil, a brand that is a little more greasy, worked ok. After several purchases, I realized a white #10 (boldest) Jell pen works Great! Got a 10 pack on Amazon for the cost of a 2 pack at Walmart. Works wonderfully! I wish my ADD ADHD dyslexic didn't kick in hard with patterns, though. I did make myself a corset. I found a wealthy area of homes that toss out furniture yearly, and I salvaged leather from as many as I could. So far, 3 complete living room sets, black, maroon, and white. Hate seeing leather go to the garbage dump. I had no idea what I was doing. I just had a picture in my mind. I used zip ties for the bones. Came out pretty good, but I made it too tall, and I could not bend over at all. So, back to the drawing board.

    For busks, I've used the free paint stir sticks from Home Depot. You can cut them down to size with a craft knife or box cutter, sand or file the edges, and voila! A perfectly functional busk.

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  Рік тому +3

      That’s for a one-part busk, of the type used in stays and bodies… this pattern needs a 2-part busk, for a more modern (19th century) corset, which needs to be opened and closed with metal loops and studs. Although I do love the free wooden stir sticks… have veneered many a table with them!! 😂😂

    Such a cute corset! I love it!
    I have a lot of bright green and black fabric and bright green and black lace for over them (green on black and black on green). I was originally going to make a skirt out of it (like, more than a decade ago) with alternating bands of black and green but then my body shape changed and I just never got around to it. This summer I made a black linen Coquelicot skirt that has bright green stitching on the outside (I adore contrast stitching) and I used some of the leftover bright green fabric for the pockets and inside parts. This corset would be a great way to use my original idea for the fabrics but make it into a reversible corset that would match perfectly with my Coquelicot skirt.
    Thank you so much for the idea!

    I just finished making my first corset used two pairs of denim jeans from the thrift/co-op shop in town $4 for each pair will be using the back pockets for a bag project later 😹😹 I did grommets front and back only to discover I forgot to put the boning in at the edges before doing the grommets 🙄🙄oh well it’s denim so I’m not too worried and plenty of heavy interfacing.
    Love the spider web look on the corset and I’m with you on not fussy cutting it🙈 I forgot about that way of doing the panels will have to remember for the next one that would save a lot of sewing time and matching up.👍🏽👍🏽

    I work in digital marketing, and you say that that company doesn't know who you are.. Then you should tell them! Tag them, see what tags they use on their socials and use those, or plain just reach out to them! 😊Maybe you could get a sponsorship or an affiliate ship, because companies really like to work with people who actually use their products, and social media marketing has the best ROIs for companies and for content creators to increase exposure, awareness, and revenue. Just a thought! 😊 ❤ Love your projects as always! This pattern might be my entry into making my own corsets.

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  Рік тому

      Oh, well thank you ❤️❤️, but based on my (lengthy) experience with CS Osborne, their website, and the way they sell their supplies, they don’t even know what an influencer is, much less have a budget set aside for social media or sponsorships. As in, they don’t have social media pages, they have a fax number!
      If it was a corset supply shop, I’d consider reaching out, but it’s an old school upholstery and leather working store in Jersey that makes good grommets which I’m happy to recommend for free ☺️

My current one is cute and works well enough but the construction is a hot mess and I had no idea of twhat I was doing when self drafting it in less than an hour... And I would make the tree in white and silver if remaking it, to contrast more strongly against the black background. It looks great. I can't wait to see the purple when you finally do that one. I'm actually in the middle of doing my pirate shirt. Unfortunately I had a few hiccups along the way. First I had to put the needles back into my smocking pleater, one UA-cam tutorial later and I was good to go. Or so I thought. My embroidery floss kept breaking so I finally broke budget and treated myself to silk embroidery thread. I'm new to smocking so it took me a little bit to get the stitches right. I finished my smocking and then the next day I slipped on some water and busted my lip open with my tooth and hurt my arm. Not my most gracful landing. I didn't even know I was falling until my face hit the floor. 😳 Anyways now that my arm is feeling batter again. I plan to finish my shirt, give her a good wash and press. Hopefully I'll have her finished this weekend. Because now I need to go diving through my stash for some fabric for a corselett. I have some fun scales that I used for my daughter's short stays for her regency dress. Fun fact we used zip ties for boning in that too. 😉 Since my pirate shirt is kind of a teal color, from my old bedsheet,, I figure the scales will be perfect. Maybe I will make a purple skirt to go with it to give it a mermaid theme, since I don't like wearing pants. I will have to dive through my fabric stashbto see if I have any purple to make a skirt. If not I may have to hit up ebay again. Unless I can find a purple sheet set somewhere.

      Sounds like you need a test project - maybe order some grommets, and use some spare/scrap fabric, and just practice setting grommets!! Don't use them for the first time ever in a project - just literally stack a few layers of fabric together (I highly recommend using a stiffer fabric in the middle, like a canvas, it really helps), and just practicing setting the grommets on a test strip of fabric. Heck, you can even try to set them in a straight line, and that way if it works out well, you've just made your own lacing strips/ lacing tape! Otherwise you can always buy lacing tape, as I said 😊

    Hah, how fun, I am in progress making something very similar after watching Cat's Costumery's Swiss Waist video a couple weeks ago!
    I see you just used the pattern straight out of the box as it were, how did you find the fit? As a similar shape to you (only a bit more padded in my case), I always wonder if the waist that's narrower than mine is gonna be pinchy since I have literally an inch between my bottom rib and the top of my hip, and my ribs get easily annoyed when there's a waistband or belt pressing on them, and how much gaping I'm going to have from lack of bust and hips, relative to the shape most patterns are designed for. Probably best for me to wear a really flowy shirt under it, but the Swiss Waist is being made for a party in early November, going over a medieval-style gores and rectangles style dress I made a few years ago that I don't tend to wear because it's not too flattering on me... and also it's long sleeved and linen so I'm never sure when is temperature-appropriate to wear it.
    My current project is black linen on one side, purple cotton canvas on the other, haven't decided if I'm going to apply any kind of binding around the edges or not, right now I'm hand-sewing WAY too many eyelets. I'll bookmark this pattern in case I want to have another go at pretending I have a shape other than brick with boobs! I've got several half-metre remnants of various colours of linen blends so that's definitely a possibility, and I'm planning some form of double sided supportive vest with some verrrry fancy electric purple remnant that will pair well with the turquoise similar fabric my xmas gift bag from a friend is made out of, and it should be just enough fabric.. And maybe next year I'll use the grey and black half-metre of spiderweb print fabric I've had in my stash for years for a halloween vest or something as I get better at doing the reversible thing and figuring out what shape my hips actually are and where my stuff goes if I try to squish it...
    Those corset pieces look a lot like the athletic corset pattern I started out with for my sports bra project, which, by the end of trying to get things to fit my shape, most of which were pretty rectangular... I even merged several pieces together rather than sew four rectangles together... yeah, brick torso... I'm totally trying the welt method next time I do something like this though, I bet it'll even work on my princess seam block since because I'm not that curvy, neither is my princess seam block!! So far I've mostly been bag-lining most things I make and that doesn't always work so well, especially when you're trying to get bones into the pointy bits and get the pointy bits pointy and all....
    I don't blame you for not trying to pattern-match, I probably wouldn't do that either, though I have learned through experience that having asymmetrical plaids definitely will annoy me, so I try to pick one stripe on the pattern at the waistband and make left and right sides the same.... half-assed pattern matching is close enough?

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  Рік тому

I end up having two different "waist" measurements and locations depending on whether it's a fitted dress or a weight-bearing waistband... bodies be weird, yo.

      @ShannonMakes That's what I was hoping to hear! I am dying to make a corset, but I'm still a beginner and I know full corsets have to be very precisely fitted. This should be the perfect project to fulfill my corset dreams before I get good enough to tackle an overbust corset!

    • @Judoka26
      @Judoka26 Рік тому +2

      @@ShannonMakesThe only things I would recommend to check besides the waist measurement is the high hip circumfrence (where this corset ends) because if you are like me and have bigger than usual waist to hip ratio you may struggle to get your lacing parallel. So you would want to add some triangles to the lower part of the pattern to get more volume.
      And if you know you have an extra short or long waist (distance between hipbone and ribcage) you might wand to check this with the pattern aswell. Otherwise the waistline could sit funky on you and the corset diggs in your ribs and hipbone (short waist) or doesn't reach the underbust/high hip (long waist).

    I realized when I use the term "idiot proofing" on my projects, I have less compassion and patience with myself when I inevitably make a mistake. (Whether it's one I planned for or not)
    My brain says: Well clearly you ARE a terribly incompetent human. You did those things, and you STILL somehow screwed it up!
    Thinking of it as a "mistake reduction strategy" has been better for me. It assumes I will make mistakes. And that's ok. But we're reducing the chances of making the most likely and most frustrating ones.
    Also, coworkers have generally found the phrase funny, and the built in forgiveness affirming. It helps them remember to set themselves up for fewer mistakes, and to be confident coming to me with mistakes early on, knowing I'll help them figure it out, without being accusatory.

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  Рік тому

      Yea, I realized as editing it that I could have chosen better language in the moment.
      I don’t have any negative emotions associated with making mistakes, I have made *so many of them* when crafting I just assume there will be several per project, and that’s just normal… I even just talked about that to the camera a couple days ago!
      BUT as someone with a public platform, I do try to choose compassionate approaches and language when speaking to people beyond myself… however what was said was said, and it wasn’t bad enough to completely cut it out of the video, so I kept it in.
      Just one of the hazards of not scripting every last second of a video - I will inevitably say some things in less-than-ideal ways. As long as it’s not actively giving the wrong impression (in this case, the impression that I think that I or anyone else is actually an idiot for making a mistake like pinning panels in the wrong order), I just leave it in and trust my viewers to understand my meaning!
