I've been watching this everyday for week some times twice a day. I've always loved tool. Danny is amazing and should've been doing vids yrs ago. Like I said below in another comment, he's close to 60 yrs old and I think he only gets better with age!
I have watched 90% of the reaction videos for Pneuma, and I have to admit, I had a shit eating grin on my face the entire time during your reaction. Your energy is contagious and I can tell this song moves you the same way it moves me. Subscribed.
I see lots of people commenting on Danny's arms and legs, and they mention that He's 59 years old, I rarely see people mention that he's built like that AND he's 6'5"... He's an absolute BEAST!
Fun Fact: Danny wears the jersey of the home team of where they are preforming every show. Often the teams give him custom jerseys with his name on it since they sell out multiple shows in the areas as a thank you.
Fibs. He went to Kansas University, where he wore Paul Pierce's #. And still does whenever he plays in Kansas or the near surrounding areas. Here - in Boston - He is wearing Paul Pierce's jersey. Thank you.
The teams don’t give them the jerseys. It’s built into their concert agreement with the venue that books them. It’s called a Rider (wiki: “In theater, dance, and live musical performances, a rider is a set of requests or demands that a performer sets as criteria for performance, which are typically fulfilled by the hosting venue. Types of riders include hospitality and technical.”) Hospitality riders would be stuff like dressing room amenities, catering, or whatever the artist/band wants really (Van Halen famously had item in their rider for no brown M&Ms, so some low level employee for the venue would have to hand pick them out of a huge bowl). In the case of Tool: Danny gets the home team basketball uniform with his name on it.
@@pro-v7500 in a interview with Danny he showed his jerseys and clearly said some were giving to him as a thank you because the band sold out multiple nights in the arena. That interview is on youtube. He said nothing about having them on his rider. Danny Carey is the mutherfukin standard of badassness period. Total savage perfectionism . One song is more than most drummers do in their entire library of playing... real talk my brethren. Btw you are awesome !!
Ladies and gentlemen, We can all tap a 4 by 4 rhythm quite steadily with our right foot when we sing along to "we will - we will rock you". At 7:40 into this video, this drummer is tapping a square quarter with his left foot on the high-hat. While he lends his right hand to go off to indian rhythm structure with his right arm. He is doing something else with his left arm. For a moment there he is reversing his stick and flat-tap it in a completely different rhythm structure. It may sound like he is syncopating it under the two other rhythmic structures he has going on - but he is not. It is a third structure. Listen to it - it is beat-sliding to both the high-hat and his right hand. (I actually think he needs to do so to get the right "beat per minute" rate into his right arm before he releases his left arm body mechanics go to play with some tom-toms to his left). When he got the rhythmic structure going on in his left arm, lined up with the collective BPM going on all over he sends his left arm over to play it on them tam-tams, playing it out with his arm on top as own cycle. Only then does he allow his right arm (playing a completely different rhythm) leave the "tabla" sounding pad that it has stayed on. (Ps look at how stable his arms are as he taps the base rhythmic cores with his wrists while coordinating both his left and right sides) Now he sends his right arm out on an expedition. His right arm is starting a cycle of 5 drums on top of the rhythm-structure going on his wrists. By now we have 3 completely different rhythmic patterns going on at once defined by feet and wrists (his right foot is steadily following the bass-lick in a syncopated 8/4 way too) On top of this, his left arm is guiding the wrist across a rather complex 3-tam sequence. While his right wrist is guided across an independent pattern of a 5-drum cycle. He then cuts his right arm down to a 4-drum circle. Before cutting it down to the same three -pad thing that his left arm is doing. Then dropping both arms to basically meet at a two-pad loop, thighing up everything up. While matching up what is going on at the wrist-level of independent mathematics. Because he is now close to that bonkers quarter pace of the high-hat that everything has swirled around for minutes, allowing the entire band to count One-two-three-four" and blow up in a 4 over 4 intermezzo. I am not a great mathematician. I am a half-decent geophysical scientist that understand wavelet and frequency analysis pretty well. What I see is a neurophysiological conundrum. A human being coordinating every extremity at the same musical BMP and then lets extremities go off to explore different fractionals of integral numbers on their own while knowing that they do conform to same "1" at different cycles. Separating the wrist pattern of each arm from shoulder/elbow muscles. Science has discovered that the giant octopus is equipped by one central brain and nervous system - and that there are 8 more brains and nervous systems in action too. What is going on musically here is biologically interesting. It is anatomically interesting. Because this guy is soon 70. And by practice, he has rewired his brain and entire nervous/reflex feedback delay system to what he just did. And please notice how he performs the biggest mic-drop ever by the last three hits he made in the video. Tic. Tac. Toc. We know he can close down shop before the guitarist brings on the fourth - since he has just proved that he can explore fractions of fourths physically and simultaneously with his different body-parts.
I am so happy to see Tool’s music reaching new people. Danny is a legend and getting to see him work is amazing. I’ve seen the band live several times since the late 90’s and they have always been one of the better live bands I’ve seen. The show that stands out was one week after 9/11 in Toronto. They were on fire and closed the show with Maynard saying some deep things. I hope your Tool journey continues and stay safe out there. This will pass and it’s the people that have to stand strong to get what’s theirs. Sending good vibes from Toronto!
When he is doing the rimshot (resting his hand on the edge of the drum and using the stick to hit against the rim of the body of the drum and not the drum head) you may not realize but he is doing multiple timing signatures. Watch again. Watch the speed that each hand is going. Then add you two feet. One for the high-hat (two cymbals pressed together on a sliding bar) and the bass drum pedal. Now see if you can do just two of those at a time. Let alone four. Welcome to the fold brother. We've been waiting for you this whole time.
FYI, Danny had both his snare drum and those trippy pads custom made and he was a co-designer! They're called Mandala pads, and his snare is called, of course, 7empest, done by Alan Von Kleef of VK drums. The pads are done with Synchestra... it really is some next level stuff going on! Apparently, serious drummers debate about the time signatures being used, the "simplest" guess is that it's in 33/16, but most seem to just shake their head in disbelief.... the best quite being the "octopus" is using the devil's math! 🤣 Love your react vids, mate

Actually, that electric guitar is a bass being strummed, and if you listen to this again, notice how Danny is following the lead from the bass. If you notice that you can realize how Danny is able to sense the timing signatures without overthinking it. In some places they wait for Danny to signal the break, like the tom triplet at 10:37, but otherwise, the bass tells them where the signature lies, letting the guitarist just free form and Danny to drum his ass off.
Watch John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) "Moby Dick" not the short version --- the long version. You'll see why he's one of the top 2 drummers depending on who you ask. Don't cheat yourself and do the short version. The long version the man is even playing with his bare hands.

Adam Christopher Boyd The rhythms are mathematically calculated, no way could I keep up. This blows me away....
thats Danny Carey's kind a signature skill set in parts, its keeping the 4 independant beats going, its not many that does that in heavy rock / metal
It’s organic and piercing. Wood and metal, Danny is an alchemist to turn them to gold.
And each foot is doing it's own thang.
Is he tired? The guy must have insane stamina because when I saw them in Auckland a month back, Pneuma was third on the setlist. He's something else.
