  • In this Hobby Cheating tutorial, I take you through the technique for doing power swords or highly reflective chrome like metal. I try to show a complex method with usual colors, but also walk you through the concept that would allow you to simplify it or use alternate colors. Hope you enjoy!

    I know this is an old video now, but I grew up watching my mother paint using that loaded brush technique you described constantly - it's the Donna Dewberry technique for doing perfect flower petals. Her style specifically wants a wide flst brush that you can manipulate on a canvas in order to make different petal shapes for your flowers

      That is awesome! It shows that we really need to look at traditional 2-D artists and learn from them as well.

    Masterfully done! I'm about to try nmm on my Eldar Farseer's Singing spear for the first time, and hopefully I'll get a finished product looking at least half as decent as your final result. Thanks for the video, liked & subscribed!

    Oh, wow! What a beautiful palette you have used. Particularly love the chest piece. The sword balances the model nicely. I, personally, do not like power swords, but I can appreciate a good one, and this is certainly a good one.

      Thanks as always. I think the key is technique is also very useful for doing extremely reflective metals, so you never know when you might need it ;)

      I think you can hang with the big girls and boys.
      Regardless of the acknowledgement you receive or don't, you're a wonderful artist and you're raising others abilities along the way. That's certainly what's important.
      ...although the acknowledgement is a nice touch ;)

    Great tutorial, a bit stressful if you try to follow every brush stroke, but a good way to see how to apply this technique over a bigger surface.
    The tutorials Mr. Komets are very good( I've following him since he was on the youtube page of Painting Budda) but I prefer yours as Mr. Komets, even explaining the things he does in a slow way, sometimes leaves some things that happen on camera unexplained, and you explain almost every brush stroke you make to get that effect without loosing the rhythmn of the narration.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  7 років тому

      Thank you sir, I will take that compliment accepting that he is a 100 times better painter than myself, but I might be a 1.5x better narrator than him ;)

    since I have no need for my army to match as I am painting only for fun
    but you mentioned Tron on Warhammer Weekly which is two of my favorite movies of all time (I used to do club and show lighting ). i cannot for the life of me figure out how to paint a fig up like that.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  7 років тому

      So the Tron scheme would be black with the thin white lines tracing the edges, then I would put the pink or blue lightly and thinned through the airbrush over the white lines. The white would be far more tinted but create the OSL effect.

    I'd love to see a video or get your thoughts on painting freckles on a mini. I tried today and even thinning the paint down to a glaze they seemed way too dark, almost ruining the skin I'd taken ages to get right .. it's a nightmare :D - so I'd love your help on this one - Thanks! and, love your videos!

    Hi again Vince cuestion if u going to paint the emperor's sword with the same technique what GW colors would you use....? Thanks annd great vid.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  6 років тому +1

      If you mean the flaming sword on Robute, I would likely use two different color sets. I would make the bottom sword steel (which check my most recent vid for a recipe) or use a white/black/blue recipe. Then I would do the top of the sword with OSL for the fire and have the steel reflect it. I couldn't give you the exact GW colors (as I don't use them regularly), but in general, the top of the fire would be red/orange/yellow as normal.

    I have some sisters of silence that i'd like to try this on...though the swords are really thin...so I am not so sure it'll be so easy.
    Just out of curiosity....what do you do with all these mini's that you paint?

    • @VinceVenturella

      Some are for competition, most are for games, so I play with them. BUt in between, they surround me in the cases in my office and make me happy. ;)

    Hey, I'm curious how would you paint power swords using oil paints? I feel like blending with oils is blending on easy mode.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  Рік тому +1

      I will ad it to the list of videos, but the short answer is two applications. First, to get the general blends down. Then you come back with second applications to push the contrast once the first layer is completely set.

  • @Clidefride007
    @Clidefride007 5 років тому

    So is it wrong to go from dark to light on one side and light to dark on the other, then reverse on the other side of the sword?

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  5 років тому

      Wrong? No. That's a perfectly fine power sword look, I just don't tend to find it convincing, but the 1-1 pattern is very established and there is nothing wrong with it. I just find the 3-2 pattern more visually compelling, but it's all personal choice.

    • @Clidefride007
      @Clidefride007 5 років тому

      Ok, my glazing isn't up to three transitions at the moment. I can sort of do the light to dark on opposing size. But I must admit the 3-2 one does look pretty awesome. I think it's something I'd have to build up to, to get it right. The first time I tried it, it looked awful, but now it looks ok.

    Hello!
    I really want bright red plasma weapons on my Necrons. Evil Suns Scarlet type of red.
    Problem is - i can go down into Mephiston and darker, but if I go this too much the blade looks more like wine than scarlet. And I can go up either into white (pink) or orange.
    And neither works. White immediately kills saturation on the entire piece making it look pale pink. Orange makes the blade, well, orange. Not scarlet pure red anymore.
    I have an effect I like with going evil suns Scarlet at the brightest and down into mephiston (and a bit darker). That's still a nice bright red blade with a nice shadow. But those colors are still too close to each other and the blade lacks definition.
    I tried adding edge highlight with either white or pink - but any addition of that causes problems from above.
    Any tips on how to do really pure red sword? All tutorials I can find run into the same things - either make it orange or pale pink.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  4 місяці тому

      You generally need to do 1 of three things - push into small volumes of highly saturated red (you do this through undershading pink fluorescents, then glazing thin red over it), push into small volumes of orange, or push into small volumes of pink. The key is to keep the volumes small and the majority of the blade red. The other side is you jump from mid-tone red down into black, that sets up the contrast for the red. I have a video on NMM Red back for my Ratcast, so if you look back in the playlist, you will see how I tackle that.
