I've seen a lot of videos on layering and glazing, most of them way longer than this one, and yet, the information here is well presented and complete, the zoom and the angle of the camera is great to show the technique, we have a clear view of the wet palette and your process doing the glaze, and how it should look more or less in the palette... So yeah, this is definitely the best video on the subject I've seen. Thanks Andy, really well done, as the rest of the videos so far.
I completely agree, ive watched tons of videos over the past year on layering and glazing, and this video is by far the most informative, and well constructed.
Some I've been painting and off for the last thirty years and it's the first time I've had this "oh shit!" feeling in a very long time. I've pushing my pigments the wrong way all this damn time! :-O Can't wait to try this out! Bravo for putting it so clearly out there.
I looked this video up because I'm struggling to get a sword I'm happy with on an Infinity model, and hearing the importance of controlling the amount of paint on the brush when glazing was helpful. I was also reminded of some of the brush skills I learned in class from Andy last year. I'm feeling good about going back to that project.
Very clear, and concise info here. I was struggling to understand how to do these techniques but now Ill feel a lot more confident on my next try. Thank you!!
I've just started this hobby and I've been binge watching mini painting vids for a few weeks , this is the best one I've seen on glazing so far . I've now subbed!
@@cultofpaint Your secret sauce could be exactly that. Sharing the thoughts and mistakes rather a straight forward tutorial. I watched your interview with Vince and the way you described figuring out volume highlighting is exactly what most beginners struggle with. Would be cool to see a tutorial focused on that with your style of naratting...
Have been using this technique, but you always learn something even if its just small nuances from experts such as yourselves - thanks - very informative
this really helped me, especially as i could see your brush strokes and angles which has been something i haven't been able to pick up in other videos. for a noob this was super useful and i'm making nice progress on a nmm sword after watching this - and making nice results! Please make more great videos
Thank you! We designed this so it would compliment the brush skills class. We hope in the future people can watch and practice this before attending. Then we can take it to the next level during the class.
This has to be the best tutorial I've seen regarding power weapons or this nmm which I struggle with alot I like the way you shown how to setup the highlights I'm almost fifty years old maybe this old dog can learn a new trick after watching this vid which I am going to watch several times again your channel has shown more in depth explanation than most I've seen on UA-cam kutgw I'm glad to be a subscriber and looking forward to your next vid
Amazing video! Never seen such in depth instructions. For a total newbie like this is perfect, love the fact you even show how to mix water into paint on the wet palette which is something I struggle with as no one ever shown me how to. Ty for this awesome video!
Great tutorial, thank you so much. The push-pull technique is a huge game changing for newbies like me who always wander why masters can make smooth layers. I always make the color too opaque and go in only one direction. Now time to pratice. 🥰🥰🥰
Very useful video. Thanks for sharing it. It’s funny your VMC Turquoise looks closer to dark blue on the video. It may just be my phone’s resolution. Seeing you work the inside of the sword was helpful. I often struggle with highlighting odd shapes.
Great vid, very helpful. I have never really looking into "natural" reflections for weapons. I find myself having trouble painting power weapons with this style when they are oddly shaped. I have a Custodes army and the classic straight sword shape is pretty easy so do, but weapons like the glaive and axe are really giving me a headache. Especially since the weapons are held in different angles. Is there an "easy" way to get some "realistic" reflections for those type of curvy weapons?
If you check out Andy's Blood Angel Squad on his socials you can see this fully finished work. It is the sword used on the cover photo. It would only have more edge highlighting so not a dramatic change in the finished look.
Finally i found the eqvivaluents to citadel colours thanks a lot. Awesome tutorial, do you use same paints for NMM silver? If not what would you recommend (preferably in citadel paints)
That is up to you! I just leave ti dark but she subtle transitions would also look cool. We will probably do another power weapon video in a different style later. We love mixing it up!
I tried your technique on some bladeguard from the Indomitus box. I need more practice, but thanks for the thoughtful steps in your tutorial. Here's a link to my results: imgur.com/gallery/vy5Bl0D
Airbrush is a great tool, but you achieve a different look with the transitions, particularly on a small blade. The skill of glazing with a hairy brush is also very helpful for all sorts of different parts of a miniature. A power weapon just happens to be the perfect piece to practice on.
@@cultofpaint But i wasnt serious xD I know the purpose of the video and you made an incredible job at explaining how to do it, but i wasn't serious xD
Best tutorial on how to do this that I have watched and appreciate you took the time to explain everything in depth.
Thank you! That is great to hear, balancing the amount of depth and keeping it concise was a priority to us.

Thank you Sergio, really appreciate that. We will continue to ty and improve the quality of the image so everything is clear as possible!
Really clear, really simple and really well presented. Another great tutorial. Looking forward to looking into the Patreon tutorials

I totally agree. I was about to make a similar comment, and read this one.
Lovely video! Thanks for sharing. That answered quite a few questions I had about blending and transitions.
Man you became one of my favorites painting channel in like 2 days, your video are really clear and easy to understand, great job
One of the best video of glazing and blending that I've seen, congrats!

Excellent guide! I learned something new for sure
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic tutorial!
Glad you liked it!
This is fantastic. I've struggled with this technique for ages. Thank you so much for sharing.
This tutorial is quite good. I like that the fundamentals are taught while going beyond the typical light dark pattern found on so many swords.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Always good to get back to basics and just focus on my brush strokes.
Ty. I think one of my issues when painting blades is I had too much paint on my brush.
Another cracking tutorial!! Great to see how you got the colour blend without mixing! Definitely going to up my glaze game after watching this!
Definitely the best glazing tutorial on youtube! Thanks for covering key basics like brush strokes & paint consistency.
Very nice love the contrast of the blue👍

Really liked your video! Would love to see more brush Techniques!
This is the best quick guide for glazing and blending that I have seen. Keep them coming sir! You are going a fantastic job.
Thank you Wayne! We tried to keep it concise, but with the most important information there.
Awesome tutorial. I think educating people on values , tones etc would also be a great tutorial for the future. Keep up the great work

This is such a good video Andy! Only took me a couple of years to stumble across ist 😅
Clear, concise and well structured video. Thank you.
Thanks for the feedback!
Finally a video that shows this in a straight forward way. Cheers mate really going to take my painting to the next level.

There are plenty of good tutorials out there but this is unique since it shows all the thought process and 'dont do this' steps. Really good!

What you said about correcting loading for the glaze was so enlightening; thank you!
It is the most common mistake, we love helping fix these things for people!
Thanks for the paint pushing tip
Best glazing video on UA-cam. Thanks a lot for doing this
Thank you very much, It is well explain and very clear! Help me a lot!
Totally new info for me so thank you for this! Excited to try this out on some power swords I have coming up to do.
Have fun!
Awesome vid guys, cheers!
thanks mate!
awesome I like the videos you are doing. Its good seeing how different artists teach similar techniques and you can use them all to find your own way.
Absolutely, taking on board different methods and adapting it to work for you is vital in this hobby!
Thank you for sharing Andy I’ve missed this class when you’ve held it and this has given me the confidence to give it a go.
Look forward to seeing what you do!
Very helpful. Thanks.
Awesome tutorial mate.
It is not new information for me, but it is really well presented and explained. I wish I saw this video years before, it would've helped me a lot.

This was very helpful
Does this technique change dramatically with SC75, or is it close to the same?
Same technique, a lot of S75 are nice to glaze with.
Very useful video. Thanks for sharing it. It’s funny your VMC Turquoise looks closer to dark blue on the video. It may just be my phone’s resolution. Seeing you work the inside of the sword was helpful. I often struggle with highlighting odd shapes.
It does, especially next to the Blue Green. It actually makes a nice contrast as it gets lighter, it becomes more green.
Could you make one for curved swords like Scimitars, sabers or Katanas? Curved blade is little more trickier to get this effect. Thanks!

We're going to look at how to approach different shaped power weapons.
Awesome video! are there any places I could see the completed power sword with the different levels of highlights?
If you check out Andy's Blood Angel Squad on his socials you can see this fully finished work. It is the sword used on the cover photo. It would only have more edge highlighting so not a dramatic change in the finished look.
Where is the citadel equivalents? Also, awesome video!
Finally i found the eqvivaluents to citadel colours thanks a lot. Awesome tutorial, do you use same paints for NMM silver? If not what would you recommend (preferably in citadel paints)
We use lots of different paints for different jobs. VMC are a great range. We've no set recipe for NMM silver.
@@cultofpaint any recommendations on VMC?
Nice Andy. Do you leave the shadows that dark or do you add some mid tones to break it up a bit?
That is up to you! I just leave ti dark but she subtle transitions would also look cool. We will probably do another power weapon video in a different style later. We love mixing it up!
Nice video!! I'm still not sure about glazing, is it just adding water to the paint? Or some other medium?
yep just water.
What brush do you use in this video?
I don't have many Vallejo paints, and no potted paints. Do you know the Reaper equivalents?
Not the specific names no, but just shoot for the same variety in tone between them. Reaper are decent paints so you'll be fine.
How would you do this *with* an airbrush? Just curious.
same order as with brush, but you will struggle to get such quick changes in colour. It's why we much prefer brush blending power weapons.
I tried your technique on some bladeguard from the Indomitus box. I need more practice, but thanks for the thoughtful steps in your tutorial. Here's a link to my results: imgur.com/gallery/vy5Bl0D
Great to hear! And they're looking really nice.
Seeing the back of that miniatures cape at the beginning makes me wanna quit painting. The garbage stuff I put out
or just buy an airbrush.
