- I mean, can you imagine ANY other guitarist playing in Primus? Guitar is probably not what comes to mind when you think of Primus, but Larry is great.
Seriously! Eddie Van Halen? Stevie Ray Vaughn? John Flansburgh? All great guitarists but they wouldn't have fit or done very well in Primus.
Hope you enjoy! Here are some links for you to hear Larry do what Larry do

Ler is criminally underated as a guitarist. Jillys on smack really shows how complex lers playing is
Ler is in my top 5 most underrated guitarists of all time. He also might be my favorite member of Primus as well. Les and Tim's work is usually pushed to the forefront of the mix on every track and Ler is still standout even when pushed to the back of the mix most of the time. Like Les is pounding out these crazy basslines and Tim is rocking the drums with expert precision, but then you listen a little deeper and you hear just some of the best guitarwork ever. I don't know of many other guitarists or even if there is another one that could mesh as well with the rest of Primus like he does. Truly one of a kind!
Did you know that he was the guitarist of Possessed before Primus? He is basically the CREATOR of the entire genre of DEATH METAL! 👁👁
That's a debate because Scream Bloody Gore had a bigger impact than Seven Churches. Not knocking Possessed, I love them.
I did not! Thank you!
The entire point of me making these videos was to share my thoughts and hopefully expand my knowledge of music and musicians.
I'll look into them, and can't wait to hear it.
Thsnks again
These are styles of music i didn't grow up on and so don't know that much about. Im going to look these bands up! Thanks for the input
Cheers
Didn't he write the seven churches album when he was 16!?! He is criminally underrated!
@@MrSdgrider88 No. Jeff & Mike T. wrote the Seven Churches songs. Larry didn’t write any until Beyond the Gates.
I became just as fascinated recreating Larry's guitar parts on drum set, as I play drumset...something always enamored me with the way Larry plays....and I love the band and I love obviously what Tim is doing and what Les is doing ... I'm a very lyrical and melodic player on drum set and there's something about Larry....
Agreed the desaturating seven is a musical masterpiece. Fck I love primus
I frickin love Lers work in Primus, him, Les and Herb are just awesome playing together
THANKS for this.Larry's only gotten better, and yeah..he's an absolute master of the diatonic scale, and knows all the "tricks".. One of my favorite guitar players, and so underrated..
Learning to bass showed me how good Ler is. I obviously knew Les was amazing before I started playing.
I took bass lessons all growing up, played in high-school jazz band and all that. I love the bass. I can't call myself a bassist anymore but it's still dear to my heart.
Besides Ler, I didn't know primus had lyrics until I was driving with my brother and he started singing along.
I've seen Les a handful of times in his solo projects, he makes it look effortless.. it's bothersome!
Thanks for the comment!
I’m right there with you. Once I listened to Les Claypools energetic crazy basslines enough, I thought, “what about this psycho on guitar who has to follow those wacky-ass bass lines?”. All the respect to these 3 musicians. One of my all time favorite bands!🤘🤘🤘
1:18, larry didn’t only “know the rules” but he learned them without even knowing any conventional music theory.
he was one of the greats that was of the generation inspired by van halen (just like dimebag darrel, and steve vai) who although had teachers, were never taught and the conventional sense, and became a riff lord just by playing.
I got super into Primus probably 4 months ago. And I understand what you mean about Ler’s playing taking a back seat to Les’s bass playing. I went to see them 2 weeks ago initially to see Les and hear the outrageous lyrics but I left there in absolute awe of Larry. Les kept the setlist more towards his serious/political/jam songs. I’ve been going down a Larry LaLonde rabbit hole since I saw them. Groundhogs Day encore sold it for me
He is so stylish!
Just listened to Pilcher's squad and realized I've never heard this song! I love primus and have seen them dozens of times thank for pointing me to this wonderful little spaz of a ditty!!!!
Love Ler
Probably in my top 3 favorite players. He also looks like Jason Bateman.
Todd Huth, I think that’s how you spell his name, wrote the Groundhogs day guitar part (the original primus guitarist)
Came here to say this
Ler is my favorite guitar player. I named my cat after him lol
Yea, Ler was actually their weed dealer and friend and only took over after Todd quit. He was there from day one and was at like every rehearsal and show, so he knew all the parts.
@@macanoodough I’ve read a lot about primus and never heard of Ler being the weed dealer.
les is amazing But Lers is the most underrated guitarist of all time. Just listen to his work on Jerry was a race car driver it's sick as shit
Ler is my favorite guitar player of all time
Ler's playing on Frizzle Fry is just nuts.
Ler Rocks….he compliments Les Claypool. Not many can do that well. Give Primus a listen if you are not familiar.
Ler holds it all together.
Yeah, ler is his own planet
ler is the best that ever lived on earth
James Honeyman-Scott + Andy Summers + Frank Zappa
Seen Primus 4 times now !
Ler’s the best!
Todd Huth, the original PRIMUS guitarist wrote GroundHog's Day. Ler changed it up quite a pit and played it completely his own way, but tod Huth wrote the original main riff of that song. Todd's responsible for a ton of earlier PRIMUS songs. John the Fisherman, Frizzle Fry, Welcome to This World, Sgt. Baker, Tommy the Cat, the list goes on. Ler did not just copy Todd Huth 's guitar work on all those songs, the early Todd Huth versions and the Studio versions Let played sound completely different, with some parts sounding pretty similar. Let is definitely the superior guitarist, and is THE PRIMUS guitarist. On of, if not the most underrated guitarists of all time. He's also a friend of mine, such a sweet guy, and absolutely hilarious. -
i feel like most clips highlighting larry don’t even show off his best contributions or moments. just listen to the pork soda album.
i wouldn't say that the guitar solo from Pilcher's squad's is the BEST but I would say the heckler is the best thing anyone has ever done on a guitar
Yes. Puddin taine also has a sleeper solo that is rarely mentioned.
@@claybaxter3202 anti pop and brown album are always over looked and its a shame
Pretty sure Todd Huth wrote guitar on The Heckler.
@@durdencaulfield2845 i mean its still a really good song and the studio version is just superior than the live version in every way
@@Sideprawn I actually hear many fans talk Brown Album as their fav. Its mine. But yeah. Antipop has grown on me. Some solid songs across that album.
I think you mean the deflatulated seven
Primus is the Rush of our generation, in my opinion of course.😁🍻
Just watched his Gibson Riff Lords vid, was not disappointed. His techniques are insane, I mean he showed how to play the South Park riff and I was just thinking how does he come up with this shit?
.....what did you say about primus at the end there?
I agree, but Ler didn’t write the guitar part for groundhogs day. Todd Huth did. Not the best example lol
It took me years, les and Tim are so fucking awesome that this guy is slyly destroying it in his spots.
