In 1986 I was working in Long Beach CA. And they filmed an episode of Air Wolf next to where I was working . We got to see Air Wolf and the Santini Air helicopters fly in The Lady did not scream like she did on tv but in my head she sure did.
I was at Universal when my friend Andrew Probert designed the Airwolf mods for the Bell 222. It was worked on the "Phantom" stage floor (and they did put in a full interior, pop riveted plastic pieces). The color is what's called "Toyota Grey". The trim piece in the chin detail of the helmets is actually the back end piece of a Star Wars AT AT model kit. Andy also designed the Airwolf logo, and the Santini Air flag art. While at Universal that day, we visited the cabin set. Many of the FX shots were with a large RC Airwolf. I was told that both copters were HQ out of Van Nuys airport.
Holy smokes, you know Andrew Probert? I grew up admiring his work on the iconic Star Trek Motion Picture USS Enterprise (used for Star Trek's 1-6), and TNG's Galaxy Class Enterprise. Probert is quite the legend.
They were at Jetcopters, Van Nuys airport along with the Sikorsky S76 that was used in one episode as HX1. Jetcopters is listed in the credits at the end of each episode. I just posted my first video which is copied 35mm photos of all three that I took there around 1984. Airwolf at Jetcopters, Van Nuys Airport
Sorry I'm going to nerd out on you from what I understand the weapons pod rdf and chain guns were mock ups stuck on the chopper and the faa would not grant a flight permit full time with the mock ups on the helicopter so they could only fly it in weapons mode for certain scenes then had to remove the mock ups after each filming.
Why doesn't someone try and restore this amazing piece of tv history? One of my favorites. Thank you for the history and visual of this incredible machinery.

I’m about to turn 40 and I still run outside every time I hear a helicopter, which is several times a day with all the hospitals here in Cincinnati.
I used draw and design my own Airwolves as a kid because of the show. lol. I live next to a children’s hospital now and unfortunately theres a lot of life flights that’ll circle around and hover and I’ll just watch as well. FYI, they have all the Airwolf episodes streaming on Peacock right now… 🤣
Unfortunately I'm a Cincinnati too lol. Live on the far East side. Air Care helicopters are extremely busy in the area. Once in awhile I will hear loud deep sounding military helicopters which make me rush outside to watch them.

About mid 80s' I was working for Rockwell at the Santa Susana Field Lab in the Simi Valley , Ca. mountains . They filmed Airwolf up there , they also landed Airwolf next to the shop I was working in .
Wow thanks for sharing! I remember when they undertook this project and then hung it in the museum unfinished. Had a falling out so some exterior was not finished at the time. Interior was never meant to be seen. I see they were able to close in the unfinished side pods since I last saw it. Too bad they weren't able to make it in combat mode. Glad it still exists. It's the only Airwolf left since the original is long gone
I didn't know the replica had been bought and relocated from the TN aviation museum. I have a few pics of it with one of myself standing in front of it. It was in much better condition then. I live about an hour or less away from the TN museum. I went couple times mostly just to see it. There's some other cool stuff there too though.
Yeah it's relocated twice, first from Tennessee to California where it sat on top of a mansion that was for sale, then it was moved to its current location in Compton.
That's interesting. I remember a guy at the museum saying it had been for sale but no one had put the money up so far one of the times I was there. The owner had a smaller nostalgia type museum that went out of business and they let him put it there in the mean time. It was inside both times I saw it. A helicopter pilot friend of mine Kevin Mulhern when asked after having been on a training flight with him in a 12 seat Sikorsky would you be able to practise an engine failure in an Airwolf like we had just done by throttling down one engine on approach, he said in Airwolf if you did that the other engine would take you to the scene of the crash! I will never forget that, god rest his sole Kevin died in a helicopter crash.
I am very sorry to hear what happened to your Friend Kevin Mulhern very sorry and he could very well be a distant cousin to me my last name is mulherin both not a common name .
THANK YOU for this! I greatly appreciate all the details you gave. I remember when I heard the original Airwolf had crashed; I was bummed out for three days.
Not a chaff door it’s a step for rotor head and swash inspection access - this 222 has non standard/early model mast and tail rotor shaft and hubs, possibly cut down for practicality, the color on the replica is a gunmetal base coat clear coat and sky grey, the exhausts are also dummy units way longer than the flying set and lacking that blue brown tinge as you mentioned. Just a note on the 222 safety record, it certainly had a bad reputation and there were a disproportionate rate of fatal crashes due to design and mechanical faults early on but they were addressed and she is still highly regarded by pilots and ground crew and no one can deny her sex appeal, possibly one of the most beautiful helicopters ever made.
I have pictures of it, and all kinds from Halson's Helicopter Museum .. it hung from the celieing so they were not worried about people looking into it.. Sadly there was a lot of things that led to it closing down. It was so awesome to get to got to it multiple times and goto the FlyIns when they had them.... So sad to see it in this shape, but glad to know that it has found a home in another museum!
Does anyone know if the video of the chain gun weapons operating were actual weapons? I realize they were never mounted on Airwolf but just curious if they were real on other platforms? The way they extended from the aerodynamic pods and then the barrels moved forward in the mounting booms was a stroke of genius as far as TV theatrics was concerned! Thanks for sharing, very nice video!
If you look closely at the "guns" used on the flying Airwolf airframe (N3176S), you can see spark plugs installed on the top of the "gun barrels" that were used ignite fuel to simulate "muzzle flashes" .
@@choward874 Could you imagine a new Airwolf show with Airwolf being piloted by Ruby Rose, Cardi B, and Tailor Swift? As they fly around in the "more inclusive" rainbow colored Airwolf? They would fly around fighting privileged people, and men, because man bad 😂 THAT is what a new Airwolf would be, so we definitely need to just leave Airwolf alone lol
Yeah, big no on an “official” reboot from me. It was already tried with a horrible comic book from IDW, where all of the talentless comic book creators live. The only reboot for Airwolf should be in the imaginations of the Airwolf fans where we can make our own new i individual continuities. Universal would take a woke dump on Airwolf if they got the chance. String, Dom, Cait, Sinjin and all the others should just remain as is with the original series(es) and individual fan head canon!
Thanks for this!just thinking that the gash in the side reminds me of season 1 episode with Shannon Doherty when the missle piercing the side and Archangel using his cane to push it out as it released gas.the front color looks like it is either flat color or slightly differently done on either side of the cowling in front of the main windows.I hope someone will undertake at least a refresh on this replica as this is very unique not seen a lot.looking for ward to your star trek post and hope your trip goes great!!😀😀👍
The 222 had a problem with the Lycoming engines. The air ambulance program in Memphis TN had several and one had to make an emergency landing on the interstate and trucked back to Memphis. The 222 problems were solved with the 430. It's sad that it's deteoriating in the sun and not in a building.
The original 222s had problematic engines, but the 222B had upgraded and more powerful engines. The 230 was a big advancement over the 222 especially considering vibration and ride quality, it was a much smoother helicopter. The 430 had a 4-blade rotor system which provided an even smoother ride.
Great video, nicely showing some details. It must be there for at least a few years now? I think the whole right side is starting to fade and become matt due to the excessive sunshine, therefore the left side looks way better. Too bad to see the flat tyres. The interior is totall rubbish now but originally when this model was built they used real dashboard gauges, both original seats, etc. Back in the day I followed the whole building process but the website doesnt exist anymore. Still many thanks to Steven W. Stull to build it!
I've been there to that exact airport. I hope you ate at the restaurant that is front of the airport. Probably one of the best places I've had lunch at.
It's ironic for years we thought the original starship Enterprise was white the franklin mint even did a diecast of the the Enterprise in white but in reality it was painted light grey and now Airwolf for years I thought it was black & white. It just goe's to show you like life everything is not just black & white.
It's really sad that no one is taking care of this heli to try and preserve it. I would most definitely try to purchase it if I could afford it. The correct name for the paint is called, 'Phantom Gray Metallic'.
Live in LA area I will try to go out to Compton airport and go see the replica model of airwolf on the TV show they always have the real one I'll take some pictures and send tell my friends show them I'm a huge fan of the TV show when I was on back of the 80s
The original Airwolf still flies but it’s registered in Germany there were two of them one crashed but the other original is still flying and you can book a flight on it if you’re in Germany!
There was only one flying Bell serial number 47085 used as Airwolf in the series, that is the one that crashed. It's well documented that Jetcopters only modified the one Bell helicopter!
@@Stoney3K Here’s the video ua-cam.com/video/JNwXFaSdejo/v-deo.html is QHKSM this is the one that was damaged during filming and repaired if you remember a certain episode I have to look into my collection and check do you know they say there was only one built there was actually two universal always has a back up universal owned One and the other one was leased from Bell. Reason why they always had two One as a back up just in case if they have problems with one they can still shoot because the show was very expensive to make. It’s just like several other movies they made in the past where they used certain vehicles they always had a back up.
@@Stoney3K The one I seen in Germany is a replica built out of a bell 222 The inside of the cockpit as well as the other gadgets that were in the original are in it and like I said you could book a flight on it I had to do some digging in registries to find out where the damaged one went it was scrapped because it landed on its belly too hard during filming the pilot was doing a low-flying stunt with the landing gear up and as you might know if a helicopter hovers low in one spot for too long you get what you call dirty air turbulence and it loses lift so it wound up slamming on its belly damaging the frame and structure so it was basically part it out. I thought it was still around but unfortunately it’s not. It’s like the TV show knight rider they had several cars and only a handful I think are still around today. But the one I do see in Germany is a replica not an original but it is painted like the real Airwolf was the inside of the cockpit the controls that Santini used to operate are in the back of it I mean this person put a lot of money into it. You have to search on Google for it. The last time I knew about it it was in Germany and it was a tourist helicopter that gives rides to people that book them. Said I’m sorry I thought that one was the other one but it wasn’t.
Rotor head looks like its off a Huey minus the stabiliser bar, the blades have too much coning angle (like wing dihedral on a plane) for a 222 as they use a electronic 3 axis flight stabiliser like a Cobra.
A shame she isn't able to fly. One day, one day, we'll get something similar to The Lady. Then again, the Apache can be considered the IRL Airwolf from the tactics used by US pilots (i.e. Hunter-Killer, etc)
Everyone talking a about the engineering and mods etc Me: Airwolf was one of the sickest shows as a kid. Right there with Knight Rider, and Street Hawk.
The interior and exterior shots of the cabin were filmed on a sound stage. The mountain lake shots are Lake Hemet southeast of LA. Shots showing the cabin withe lake and mountains were a matte painting, the cabin only existed on a sound stage.
@@theensignschair ok cool I didn't know if it was replica of a helicopter from planes similar to the cars movie when I saw the eyes or something else pretty cool none the less
I grew up in Burbank as a kid and one day I woke up to somebody making a movie next-door to my house. So I walked over and who did I find???…. Jan Michael Vincent! He was waiting for them to set it up his scene so he was working on his tan with shirt off wearing a pair of jeans and had his cowboy hat on,LOL. He was hella cool and let me kick it with him and talked to me for 20 minutes or so until he had to go do his scene! Super cool dude!
So your vids kinda inspired a simple search. I looked up 10 helicopter movies and the take-offs of each. Try this yourself. I could not find a more impressive one than Airwolf. (Blue thunder was boring) The camera crew knew how to do it right. I even looked at a 222 taking off and it was plain. If you find better, let me know!
It looks fantastic! Hey, you should check my build out! I did used the revell anthracite grey but I added it a bit more black because the grey turns out a bit more light hope to see ur build !!
I wish someone would make an accurate STL set for it, I'd love to 3d print one, there are some out there but they're not quite anatomically correct, even a set of decent blue prints would be good
I promise I tried to research before asking. Is this still there as far as you know? I'm in Orange County, pro freelance photographer/videographer and have set a very serious goal of buying a 1980's Bell Heli, convert it to Airwolf, make it fly, make it howl. I'd love to grab some good images of it. I will document it here but I still have a ways to go as far as revenue is concerned. It's a huge undertaking but I am extremely motivated to do it. So I want to get out and take some pictures of this replica before it becomes any more damaged. Even if it takes 15 years, I'll build it, get licensed and fly that beast all over monument valley and Lake Powell.
@@theensignschair Couldn't agree more! And I am just the stubborn and ambitious guy who would actually do it. Talk is definitely cheap, and I certainly have a mountain to climb. The good news is, I climb mountains and have achieved goals that are quite difficult and far less fun than this would be. Hopefully sooner than later! Thanks for the info.
Very lofty goal my friend ,this particular Helicopter is what is called timed out reached its service limits. And can no longer be flown , the best you could do is find one for sale, with time left on the airframe and strip it down repaint it And do all your airwolf stuff to it, better have deep pockets though it's going to cost you upwards of 2 mil and that's going easy on you.

The “chaff door” is actually a step to climb up to the main rotor. The chaff/flare dispenser on Airwolf was hinged at the front and opened outward.
Yes this has been pointed out in many previous comments but I appreciate the clarification.

I miss airwolf. Those were the good old days.
I saw the original Airwolf at an airshow at El Toro when I was a kid in the early 80s.
Thanks for the vid! How easy is it to access this chopper? Just buy an entry ticket and you’re in?
I wasn't charged for entry, I'm pretty sure it's a free museum.
These guys need to build a fully functional version, complete with blank-firing mounts, etc.
😅👍
I have pictures of it, and all kinds from Halson's Helicopter Museum .. it hung from the celieing so they were not worried about people looking into it.. Sadly there was a lot of things that led to it closing down. It was so awesome to get to got to it multiple times and goto the FlyIns when they had them.... So sad to see it in this shape, but glad to know that it has found a home in another museum!
Nice HD footage in gorgeous LA light. I’m glad we filmed with the Replica in its prime in 2008
Does anyone know if the video of the chain gun weapons operating were actual weapons? I realize they were never mounted on Airwolf but just curious if they were real on other platforms? The way they extended from the aerodynamic pods and then the barrels moved forward in the mounting booms was a stroke of genius as far as TV theatrics was concerned! Thanks for sharing, very nice video!
I believe that was done with a separate miniature.
If you look closely at the "guns" used on the flying Airwolf airframe (N3176S), you can see spark plugs installed on the top of the "gun barrels" that were used ignite fuel to simulate "muzzle flashes" .
So sad to see it deteriorating !!
Wow for what you do show in the video...
Thank you !!
The Airwolf Legacy must continue! A Producer should make new films on Airwolf and new cast members and new episodes!
Why? You want wokecopters fighting for equality?🤣
It would never be as good. Better off just let sleeping dogs lie.
@@choward874 Could you imagine a new Airwolf show with Airwolf being piloted by Ruby Rose, Cardi B, and Tailor Swift? As they fly around in the "more inclusive" rainbow colored Airwolf? They would fly around fighting privileged people, and men, because man bad 😂
THAT is what a new Airwolf would be, so we definitely need to just leave Airwolf alone lol
@@nocalsteve Nice update. Thanks for the information.
It was at Pidgeon Forge, TN museum. Right next to the P-47.
Would love to put a group together to come help restore her. Shame to see the lady in such disrepair. Thank you for sharing.
Someone had reported a few months ago that she was moved into a hanger, but all the photos I have seen recently still show her sitting outside.
@@theensignschair bah! I hope they move her in! May, I would love to have her in a private hanger on display!
The actual color of AIRWOLF was "Phantom Gray Metallic", a color from DuPont Imron
I watch Airwolf every week when I was a young teenager..I love Airwolf
I did not, I was actually in a bit of a rush that day.
Cool, a fairly accurate replica on the exterior. Such a tragedy what happened to the original and her occupants.
In a tragic sense of irony, it was destroyed the same way the one in the show was, being used as an air ambulance.
Excelente Video, muchas gracias. I love AIRWOLF, Saludos desde CHILE.
The theme tune was awesome also!!!!
incrible, amazing. cool, my favorite serie the years 80.
It's ironic for years we thought the original starship Enterprise was white the franklin mint even did a diecast of the the Enterprise in white but in reality it was painted light grey and now Airwolf for years I thought it was black & white. It just goe's to show you like life everything is not just black & white.
Would love to see this lady built up to fly!! Awesome
Thanks for this, next time we are over there in the US, perhaps May/June 2023 we might just stop there for a look....
one of my fav tv shows 🙏 great memories
Would be cool to own the original & fly it. Thanks for showing this replica.
It's really sad that no one is taking care of this heli to try and preserve it. I would most definitely try to purchase it if I could afford it. The correct name for the paint is called, 'Phantom Gray Metallic'.
Phantom grey back in the day bro😉👍
Gun metal grey is the correct paint on it! They didn't have
Live in LA area I will try to go out to Compton airport and go see the replica model of airwolf on the TV show they always have the real one I'll take some pictures and send tell my friends show them I'm a huge fan of the TV show when I was on back of the 80s
You can tell it is not the original helicopter - the rotor head is totally different lol. Good video, Airwolf was my favourite show growing up.
Someone said earlier it's a rotor head off a Huey I can't confirm that but your right the 222 head is much smaller.
Watched the show even had my own version "white wolf!" #1 on bucket list is to fly a chopper(oh yeah!)
The original Airwolf still flies but it’s registered in Germany there were two of them one crashed but the other original is still flying and you can book a flight on it if you’re in Germany!
Do you have a source for the second helicopter? As far as I know only N3176S (later D-HHSD) was used, which crashed.
@@SuperAgentman007 That's just a regular Bell 222.
The green Sikorski in the background has my interest!
Awesome Work Bro, Thanks!!!👍👍👍😎 Greetings from Helsinki, Finland 🇫🇮🇺🇸🇫🇮🇺🇸🇫🇮🇺🇸
Your welcome! Thank you and Good to hear from Finland!
Rotor head looks like its off a Huey minus the stabiliser bar, the blades have too much coning angle (like wing dihedral on a plane) for a 222 as they use a electronic 3 axis flight stabiliser like a Cobra.
A memories that not forgotten I see spirits of hawke and Dominic inside
Will,,,,,,,,,THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR A WELL DOCUMENTED VIDEO !,,,,,,God Bless !
Glad you found it useful!
Beautiful bird, amazing show, but sad to see it in this state. Thanks for the video.
thanks for the tour,I still love the lady
A shame she isn't able to fly. One day, one day, we'll get something similar to The Lady. Then again, the Apache can be considered the IRL Airwolf from the tactics used by US pilots (i.e. Hunter-Killer, etc)
Everyone talking a about the engineering and mods etc
Me: Airwolf was one of the sickest shows as a kid. Right there with Knight Rider, and Street Hawk.
Where was string fellow hawk house located was it really on top of a cliff
The interior and exterior shots of the cabin were filmed on a sound stage. The mountain lake shots are Lake Hemet southeast of LA. Shots showing the cabin withe lake and mountains were a matte painting, the cabin only existed on a sound stage.
Nice. I grew up watching Air wolf!
Airwolf was one of my favorite TV shows I loved the helicopter by the way what is that helicopter with the eyes is that from a movie TV show as well?
No it's not, but it kinda resembles the helicopter from Riptide!
I was gonna visit it when it was in Tenn there's another hanging from the Ceiling in another museum somewhere
Thanks for filming and posting this!
Your welcome! Hope you enjoyed it!
3:33 : This is just a step to do your main rotor inspection, nothing fancy :-D
This replica was cleaned up and restored by West Coast Customs in Burbank before it went to the roof of the mansion.
So your vids kinda inspired a simple search.
I looked up 10 helicopter movies and the take-offs of each.
Try this yourself.
I could not find a more impressive one than Airwolf.
(Blue thunder was boring)
The camera crew knew how to do it right.
I even looked at a 222 taking off and it was plain.
If you find better, let me know!
Looks like a great trip Will - travel safe!
Thanks Adam!
Is this the only full size left in existence? It would be fun to transfer my lama running gear to this airframe.
I wish I knew what happened to our static mock-up up in Canada. Probably disassembled and left to rot….
It looks fantastic! Hey, you should check my build out! I did used the revell anthracite grey but I added it a bit more black because the grey turns out a bit more light hope to see ur build !!
As of November 2023 does anyone know if the Tomorrow's Aeronautical Museum still have this AirWolf replica? Thanks!
Love the Rip Tide chopper sitting next to it.
Screaming Mimi Sikorsky 58 radial engine
I wish someone would make an accurate STL set for it, I'd love to 3d print one, there are some out there but they're not quite anatomically correct, even a set of decent blue prints would be good
There are some weapons station Santinis seat blueprints out there check the airwolf fan sites
Thank you very much for the video
I am building this model right now
That is a beautiful chopper
That's a very ambitious plan! To the best of my knowledge the replica is still there!
Good luck in your endeavor!
I do hope someone can restore it to operational, including the weapons systems....😉
Good thing they got the helicopter behind the wolf to keep an 👁️👁️ on things
