  • I can't really handle my gold properly when its as small as these bits were. So, I thought, why not turn it in to one nice little chunk that I can pick and and properly feel in my hand? So after watching some other videos online thats what I attempted to do. Using a MAPP replacement torch and a random piece of graphite, I tried to melt 1g of fine gold nuggets into a nice little gold button. Twas my first attempt at melting gold. I just did it for the fun of it. The results speak for themselves. Advice very much welcomed at this point. Thanks for watching!
    Link to my second (successful) attempt: • Another Attempt to Mel...
    As always, thanks a bunch for watching. I really do appreciate it. And if you liked the video then please remember to show your support by LIKING, COMMENTING, SHARING and SUBSCRIBING...it helps a lot.

    Problem is you have a very large thick graphite . in order to melt it you need all the graphite to get to temperature too. And 15 mins is nit long enough. Also DO NOT SET GRAPHITE IN WATER . when you use it again it will explode

    you need the mapp gas oxygen torch from home depot, its 65 dollars, the oxygen doesnt last long, and you have to start with the mapp gas barely on then turn the oxygen on like three turns to get the flame hot, but it will melt silver and gold. oh and dont do it outside the flame is tempermental until you get it going.

    Also, you should of made the depression in the graphite on the flat, not on the edge. The flat is like 4 inches across and will sit low on the bench with heaps of room for a bigger and or deeper crater.

    Good try my friend, try 2 torches with the borax, should get hot enough then, also a deeper depression to melt the gold, well done anyway for having a go, cheers michael.

      yes this . you do need a deeper dish , and that looks like 18k so it should melt faster than 14 ish, ive smelted that grade in about max 10 minutes with map gas and also dont forget to glaze!

      @DigginForGold  4 роки тому +1

      These is all natural gold straight out of the ground. It is likely to be 90-95% pure gold. Definitely not 18k. And took about a min or so when done in a proper crucible bowl thing.

    Hello, this graphite piece absorbs heat and dissipate it , without talking about the depth and the shape of the hole that you made , it is another missing point. good luck next time .

    you were holding the torch too close. Making it cold! hold the tip of the flame too it

    Yeah, build a firebox to surround the graphite crucible. That will help retain the heat and keep the temp up.

    If you use a potato it works really well as a crucible, you can even make a deep depression in the potato that keeps the heat( and the gold) easier

      A video to watch would be melting gold in a potato, its actually a youtube video yes.

  • @swiftrick15

    The graphite makes it take way longer. But I guess that's all you had. Get some crucibles off ebay cheap.
    Good stuff anyway.. that torch will work, it is what I use. The borax helps bring the heat up..but yeah.. graphite was your only problem.

    • @Bestoftheworstfishing
      @Bestoftheworstfishing 6 років тому

      swiftrick15 borax is strickly for cleaning the gold during the melt

    • @swiftrick15
      @swiftrick15 6 років тому

      No its is not. It will help to remove SOME impurities but is used to help increase the temp quicker, and also used to glaze the crucible. To clean the gold, you need to refine it, which is done before the melt.

    • @Bestoftheworstfishing
      @Bestoftheworstfishing 6 років тому

      swiftrick15 that would be soda ash

    • @swiftrick15
      @swiftrick15 6 років тому

      Its common knowledge that it helps remove impurites during burn..and it lowers the melting point. However it does not purify the gold. I have never used soda ash.
      Borax is a flux... that is all

    • @swiftrick15
      @swiftrick15 6 років тому +3

      To help promote melting.
      That is Borax's main function.
      Do some research

  • @IntermountainGoldRefiners
    @IntermountainGoldRefiners 4 роки тому

    So the graphite had to heat up first and then the gold was starting to melt but it needed a lot more time at that temperature or hotter. Oxygen Propane or Hydrogen Oxygen are hot enough to do it faster.

  • @chemistryscuriosities
    @chemistryscuriosities 5 років тому +1

    You need to be more patient. You can melt gold with that torch no prob but it takes some time and try insulting the graphite with insulation or try getting an old brick the kind that won't pop and break pieces of when you hear it to glowing red hot. Those refactory bricks are great for this. And you can sand out a bowl shape in them.

      brad brad borax helps the gold melt and to clean impurities out of it.

    No. You need a shallow crucible, and more centralized heat. I use a torch capable of 5000F, its needle thin. Your losing to much side heat. It needs to reflect back on itself... a sand hole would have been better. I can do buttons of 7-8 grams np. Good luck!

    "Ask Jeff Williams" channel has a good, albeit older video, on exactly what you are trying to accomplish. Perhaps there are some pointers in there that could help? Just be careful because too much heat will vaporize gold.

      Yeah had seen that ages ago. It was old when i watched it then...must be ancient now lol. But yeah thats also partly why I went with chunkier gold first time.

    And not a bonce in sight lol.
    A bit of bonce is okay Diggin for gold.
    I wonder if that graphite thing was stealing all your heat energy.
    My son done one of those but he used a proper ceramic crucible.
    I doubt they are too expensive,

      Good find.
      Just reading the data at that link suggests pre-heating the crucible first and also to glaze the lining with borax
      I wonder if doing those 2 things would work with your crucible

    • @mohammednovalija
      @mohammednovalija 6 років тому

      Just thought of something else that can only help.
      Get 4 bricks , put 3 of them around the crucible and 1 over the top and that will make like an oven to keep your heat in.Use the ends of the bricks to make the oven small

    • @goldluckvictoriaadventures7508
      @goldluckvictoriaadventures7508 6 років тому +1

      Diggin' For Gold that wasnt melting just sticking from the heat. Try 2 torches and it will work. Also a deeper depression for the gold to melt in.and plenty borax 😉 good try though 😉

    • @DigginForGold
      @DigginForGold  6 років тому +1

      No, it did start to melt. The top was melting...as you can see in the video. The problem was the graphite was sucking away too much heat from it...hence the bottom not melting. I KNOW this because I just made another attempt with a ceramic crucible and one torch and it melted really fast. Vid up soon in a couple of hours.

    You used the perfect gas for it and crucible was it. Just the flame was to close too high, should’ve melted within
    The first 5 minutes . Observe the way the flame and how the metal reacts when to apply it to the different colors of the flame hair, to how cool the gold will attract one another forming and orbiting into a beautiful almost white and mirror reflecting orbit sphere and then right when you take flame off have just a little of borax sprinkle on top and dump it in the way you’ll see

    'Cup shaped small Crucible'......It will concentrate the heat/temp to a higher level no matter what torch you use. Can see there was a little melt there but if you play the vid back it is visible that a lot of the heat was escaping due to lack of containment (Too open )..........You will crack it! next time :) Least you had a go tho bro

    You had your flame too close and too high. You have to lower the heat and allow the blueish white flame to hit it so it can reaching melting point and melt together. Too much heat will only freeze it. Think about it.
