No joke, we filmed that twice. The first time I couldn't get the cap off either. We thought it was so funny that we did a dramatic reenactment within a dramatic reenactment. LOL
Ahahahaa the "dramatic re-enactment" was brilliant. I'm all for this kind of visual humour, you should do more of that, but not delete the actual footage :)
So nice, loved the “lost film” clip... I think we even saw the elusive Mr. VanOaks without a hat on! Great build.. love the modular greeblie design you used..
Thank you!! I learned two very helpful lessons that will help me on projects on which I am working: 1) LED strip lighting needs extra glue to hold over time, and 2) cabochons can be used for blinking buttons. I appreciate your help very much!!
Doesn't have to be perfect. The point was to make some improvements and you certainly did that! Well done. The reenactment was entertaining and Mrs did great. I really need to get busy making something myself ... thanks for all the inspiration.
Thank you for sharing this! I'm making some of those red death star control panels that have the 3 convex lights and your cabochon idea will work perfectly.
such an awesome transformation. I have one of those shelves in my living room for the past 3 years. Never did I envision this. Props to you Sir. And I must say, that is the best make up reel for lost footage ever. Mrs VanOaks was funny and informative. And as a person who does not have a lot of the maker tools for hobbies...I was happy to hear options ot outsource. I may have to look around my community to see for the same....instead of a $5k purchase of a laser cutter here or a resin printer there.
Definitely. While I'd love to have a laser cutter, I don't really have the space for it. To have been able to find a local shop to do it was a huge time saver and was more affordable than you'd think.
HAHAHAHA. Yeah, I don't mess around. Although, if you looked closely you'd see the areas where there were drips of super glue. For some reason the 1/4" MDF didn't absorb it as quickly as thicker MDF does.
super stoked on this one. Also quite timely as a friend just gave me one of these shelves for records. Do you think you’ll be inclined to hand paint any of the “control panel” accents in time? and lastly, what’s the van oaks theme song called? i have an association to it now that gets me excited for prop building and the halloween season. would love for a ring tone or something. haha
I might, just to give it more variation. The theme is some stock music from audio jungle. I don’t recall the name but if you search for halloween it’ll come up.
@@VanOaksProps sick thanks. i assumed it was stock audio but it’s van oaks now as far as I’m concerned. haha. def my favorite “maker” channel. keep up the killer work!
I see a few people talking about hot spots in here. The first thing that will even out the lighting is to paint the interior white. The more white the more it can bounce the light around and the more even it will become. A dusting of silver will also help.
I agree 100%. I got excited and ahead of myself during the build and had every intention of lining the inside of the shelf with foil tape. There was a text overlay that talked about it. It would definitely made for more even light disbursement.
Just found your channel and binged all your haunted mansion stuff and then, low and behold, he also makes starwars stuff! As do I! Hello fellow maker from your friendly neighborhood intergalactic arms dealer 🥪🥪
CA glue with acrylic?! I've never had any luck with cyanoacrylate (or any other adhesive) to bond acrylic. Sometimes CA glue works initially, but it always fails a few minutes or hours later. In the end I've always ended up fashioning a way to clip or clamp the acrylic piece into place. Anyway, cool build. Thanks for sharing.
Waiit.. no haunted mansion?? Ha. Joking Hey man, so, since you're not trying to hide iit. I've been wanting to tell you you shouldn't bother to hide it.. You know. A good family friend of ours has only a thumb and finger and he has always been so good at hiding. My cousin who is around 35 now. Didn't even realize he had a hand that way till she was like 30.. we've all known him our whole lives. But, man, he played high school hockey on one of the best teams at the tiime.. all sorts of things. And we used to work with him on a regular basis building houses and buildings and things. Buut anyway, it never ceases to amaze me all the things he does. He's over 75 I think now so we're all slowing down, but he could out work me on any day. Probably still. Be proud . Handi capable eh. Cheesy. Sorry. I mean no offense. Keep it uup brother man
I appreciate that. Yeah, I've never tried to hide who I am and I've no plans of starting. If for nothing else, it shows people of all skill levels and abilities that they can be a maker.
I'm sure the first instruction that you gave her was to don't look at the camera. And now she's quite the scene stealer. I'm sure she's going to be asking for a speaking part in the next video.
Oh man, that dramatic clip was hilarious. Wonderful build man, love it!
Thanks Brian! I figured I mention her enough that she might as well be in a video. Lol
This is sweet you two and those star screws sure give it that starwars look.
Thanks!!
Outstanding! Looking at the black, non lit, non blinking, non legged KALLAX in my office, “Look at you, you’re just so... boring!”
Literally the same conversation I had with mine.
"starwarsy" is my new favorite adjective!
Hahaha
This bookcase will be long remembered. It has seen the end of IKEA sameness, and it will soon see the storage of your collectibles. Impressive!
Agreed!
Her face when she can't open the spray can is hilarious! Fantastic job!

Loved the Dramatic Reenactment. The display case looks great.
Thanks!!
This is super-fun and Mrs. VanOaks is a delight! You two never fail to crack me up!
Thanks! She is a delight ❤️
Really enjoyed this one 🎃
Glad you enjoyed it
The easy addition of the blinking led is a great hack. I also enjoyed the reenactment of the lost footage.
Thanks for watching!
I like it! Great bookshelf! Simple, to the point, and cool looking.
Thank you!
Love the dramatic re-enactment! lol Thanks for all of the great information and cool stuff!
You bet!
Fantastic build! Love the dramatic clip with the assist of the cap removal! LOL!
Funny thing is, it happened during one of the takes and it both struck us as funny so we left it.
Awesome build, the reenactment footage was a nice touch and quite humours.
Glad you enjoyed it!

loved the reenactment
lmfao at the dynamic reenactment. haha that was cute.
Build came out so good. Well done
Thank you 😁
I came for the DIY halloween.... and now I found out your a Star Wars fan also, need to start watching these Star Wars builds.
Welcome and thanks for watching!
Brilliant build, brilliant finish!
Thanks James!
Mrs. Van Oaks is awesome!
Right?!
Great project. I loved the dramatic reenactment. We've all been there with lost footage but you leaned into it and made it fun.

Super simple, but looks so good. The details really sell the theme. Happy Saturday!
Yeah, i agree. it wasn’t terribly difficult and the outcome was completely worth it.
Great build! The reenactment is pretty great.
Thanks! The reenactment makes the video.
Nice job. Looks great. Love the blinking lights, they really add to the overall look
I agree!
Great second life for IKEA furniture Derek! Look forward to seeing it full of your treasures.
Thanks Jason! Now it just needs to stop smelling like paint. Lol
@@VanOaksProps to bad that didn’t disappear with the footage!

@@VanOaksProps did they specialize in it? It was it a normal big box brand store? Like Michael’s or some craft chain
It was a specialty shop run by one guy in an industrial park. He cut wood & metal and had a few cnc machines too.
@6:25 the greeblie on the far right looks like a design I put on Thingiverse a couple of years ago. Love seeing it used in something!
I def count that as a win!!
Amazing as usual!!
Thanks again!
That thing is badass!!!
You on your way to ikea yet?

Thanks buddy!
Thank you for another great video
Thanks for watching and for your support!
Lol was that an appearance from Mrs. VanOaks
Sure was! She's my stunt double.
Seems so easy! I want to do that!
Do it!
Not a huge SW fan but... As always, knocked this out of the park yet again. Never cease to impress. Keep it up man!
I appreciate that! Hopefully the take away for people who aren't fans of Star Wars is that you could theme any ikea piece to suit your liking.
@@VanOaksProps without a doubt! Rather than focus on the subject matter use the spark of creativity to get out there and...well... Make something 😅😉

this would fit nicely on the death star
I think so too.
Great job on the closeups for the finished project, but I would have liked to see what the whole shelf looked like finished.
It’s at the end of the video unless you mean filled with my collection.
I was just looking at these bookshelves....I would love to do this for my collection....
You should!

I was thinking the same thing. Even just a lazy coat of white spray paint inside would go a long way to brighten up the centers.

NIcely done... Lucky, my wife doesn't mind the POTC or Haunted Mansion stuff, but draws the line at Star Wars.......
I definitely won the lottery in the wife dept.
Dude, your wife is ADORABLE.
Yes she is!!
Why gray instead of the glossy black look tho? Either way amazing job. I'm going to go build something.
Because much of the Death Star was grey.
It looks great, but I thought you would add some weathering to it.👌
Thanks! The thought crossed my mind but the Death Star is clean, so no weathering required.

I remember the first time a came across one of them rustolium can caps. I still have the scars.
They’re strange. Sometime very easy, other times difficult. Really inconsistent.
Awesome build man but way too clean for me. Must be fresh off the assembly line. Great job.
