Fun fact: Liam O'Brien and Ashley Johnson both play in the most famous D&D stream ever, Critical Role. Ashley doesn't get too deep into character in the first season, but you can really see Liam diving into the minds of his characters. It almost feels like he's living his characters and their turmoils. This is noticeable in the first season, but in the second season, he manages to make his performance more visceral, while keeping it under a tighter leash, vocally. A very quiet, yet intense performance. It's kinda brilliant.
There’s also an animated show called the Legend of Vox Machina, based on critical role s1, in which they voice act, along with Lauda Bailey (Lust from FMAB, Serana from Skyrim), Travis Willingham (Mustang from FMAB), Sam Riegel (Donatello from 2003 TMNT, Phoenix Wright from Ace Attorney), Marisha Ray (Margaret from Persona 4) and Taliesin Jaffe (Basil Hawkins from One Piece), with Matt Mercer (Levi Ackerman, Trafalgar Law, Jotaro Kujo, McCree from Overwatch, Ganondorf) as the DM.
Handsome Jack is so great, he's the reason why I got into the Borderlands storyline. I actually met Dameon Clarke at a con and he was literally the embodiment of Handsome Jack. He never altered his natural voice to play as Jack so when you spoke to him (and imagine closing your eyes) he was Handsome Jack. Very sweet too, 😊😍
The whole “ volume doesn’t equal intensity” really reminds me of my time in band, my band director would always talk about that. He would comment it’s like your mom whisper yelling at you in the store. The intensity isn’t the volume, it’s the intent.

I appreciate what you said about dubs because I’m one of those people with a disability that makes reading subs at the very best unenjoyable and it’s always bothered me when people hate on dubs when it’s the only way some people can actually enjoy the show or game. It’s a thing a lot of people don’t think about that when critisizing dubs, but if it weren’t for them I wouldn’t get to enjoy some of my favourite shows and ganes. Nice video.
People hate on dubs because they have a preference. There is really no point to spending energy being bothered by people disliking dubs. That's like getting actually upset about iPhone fans downtalking Android users. I watch very few anime English dub as the voice acting doesn't always feel natural to the show. Some however, are done pretty well (DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, Konosuba, etc). Others don't always feel the same way. You having a disability doesn't mean anything negative about you, but honestly why would that impact someone criticizing dubs at all? Your having one doesn't mean that I won't stop having issues with the voice acting of some shows. But I will say the actual lack of understanding Japanese can be a reason why some prefer dub. When you don't understand the language, it's harder to distinguish bad VA.
@@LBK978 By your logic, there's no point to people wasting their energy hating on dubs either. People just need to watch their """superior""" subs and leave us dub watchers alone. The main problem is people are biased and hate on perfectly good dubs just because they don't like dubs.
@@nylo_arts duh, the logic applies both ways lol. However, I did mention a preference. I have a tendency to watch subbed, but I can watch dubbed if it seems like the better move to me. Except the people that purely watch sub are generally the ones shit talking (like iPhone users making fun of android users). Like you can get made about it, but ask yourself, what good is that going to do you? Watch your anime and do you. You're literally creating stress for no reason.
I think Ellen McLain did a really good job with GLaDOS from Portal. Playing a supposedly emotionless robot but still giving emotion seems like a hard feat
Oh 100%!!!!! GLaDOS has such a fucking cool voice. All of her lines in portal 2 are *_dripping_* with a malace that feels so real you ENTIRELY forget its voice acting at all. Wheatley as well has an amazing preformance! The game overall very good voice work. (You can also see it come out in characters like cave johnson or any of the cores.)
I just clicked and I already know there’s not gonna be any of his clips. [Edit] Okay, so I’ve watched the whole video and I must say that I really appreciate this kind of video. It’s different from the rest of his videos (eg. cosplay, bad voice acting, impressions) and please don’t misunderstand, I love those videos. I really do love those videos and I live for this channel but I appreciate the input and Connor’s authentic admiration/respect shown in this video. It’s awesome.
You may know him from roles like Gaara from Naruto, Yasuo from LoL or Warden from For Honour. He's a fantastic voice actor and I'm certain that he's by far the most appreciated one
I was scanning the comments for other critters! I feel like every time I watch a new anime someone from the cast is in it haha. Or if not them one of the guests!
Ashley too as Ellie :D Honestly I would love to have Connor analyze the variety of tones, emotions, and simply the varied ranges each of the members of Critical Role showcase on air. Matt Mercer is obviously a man of hundreds of voices on the show, but the other players have so much variance too between the two campaigns.
"Holy nutballs, heh heh, what happened to your fricken face!?" "My husband gave me a skag pearl ring." "I'm so sorry, and where is he now?" "He's dead." "Well, that is a heartbreaker, but hey! YOU GOT SOMETHING IN COMMON WITH HIM NOW! Wilhelm, kill these savages..." He somehow bounces between being completely oblivious to social cues (OK not oblivious, he knows what he's doing and doesn't care), to being mildly charming, to full blown psychotic in the span of like 10 seconds.
@@discobroccolifool968 I made that in to a "meme". I made the whole speech in as tiny a text as possible, and on the bottom in *BIG BOLD LETTERS* "Moral is, you're a total bitch". Nobody ever gets it and I think I prefer it that way :P
Im very late but the best dialog in the game and one i feel truly defines handsome Jack is the side mission where he asks you to go check on him grandma and or mom I forget which
I love one quote from Handsone Jack, this one was "Everyone thinks their the Hero of there own story" (quote from Tales from the Borderlands) this was really good too because the way he says it as if he gets tired over and over of the same thing happening again.
A variant of it's in the intro to Borderlands 2 where the vault hunters are on the train. So you all thing your the heroes of your own story, but your not. Welcome to Pandora kiddos!
I could watch a whole video of you talking about how amazing the voice actor of Handsome Jack is. I could honestly watch a whole video of you just talking about Handsome Jack in general! He's literally the best villain in any video game ever.
That credit goes to Chris Cason. He's a really good one he also did Gluttony in Fullmetal Alchemist. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Oh! And Didoria from DBZ!
I met Damien Clark at a convention in Wyoming, and he's the coolest person I've met. My friend asked him how he can laugh so genuinely, and he's like, "I have no idea, usually I'm murdering someone so I'm not sure."
Steve Blum is probably THE reason Spike is one of my favorite anime characters. He's cool, calm, and charismatic. His delivery really captures that for me.
I think the reason why Handsome Jack is such a good villain is dependent on the voice more than the script. Like, the script is amazing, but what Dameon Clarke did with Jack is bone chilling. I can't even really explain it, it's just so good.
One of my favorite Handsome Jack lines, the one that really turned him into a villain you’d love to hate, was after Bloodwing dies and he’s fumbling around for the violin to play a sad song. Also CORROSION!
I hoped that you would pick a Troy Baker performance to highlight, and you gave us Troy, Ashley, AND THEN a Liam O'Brien performance? Best video ever, 10/10 very satisfied
Handsome Jack was such a great character. A villain so deluded that they were the good guy of the story even while reciting stories of quite villainous acts they've performed. He made that game the best of the series.
"I, AM THE GODDAMN HERO!!!!" Agree, this IS a great line, and DOES kinda define Jack's whole character. Still no the best line about heroism I've heard in a game though. That honor still goes to Spec Ops: The Line
8:28 okay, so this is one of those things that is *so* easily overlooked and I feel like it needs a mention. The "total bitch" line is obviously meant to have a sort of deadpan delivery, but what most people would have done is just do it straight, cut right to the deadpan and pull the rug out. But what actually happens here is so much better - Handsome Jack himself, as a character, wants to do the deadpan delivery but is so goddamn amused with himself from the story he just told that he can't quite do it. You can hear that he's still smiling, his posture is relaxed, and he couldn't conjure up a fuck to give about you if someone had a gun to his head. It does such an amazing job of keeping in character and selling the other lines that came before it.
I agree. He could have gone full psychopath and just abruptly changed his tone. But that's not him. He's actually teeming with charm and charisma and can't hide it. It's just not directed in a nice way lol. He struggles with being the asshole he aspires to be but he's too full of confidence and bravado.
Thank you for showcasing Liam O'Brien in "Monster". I'd never actually heard of the show before (I think I was vaguely aware of the manga), and I went down the rabbit hole and ended up enraptured--because your video piqued my interest. "Monster" kind of restored my faith in anime, to be honest--like there are still mature stories being told out there. And the dub was top-notch, you can tell everyone involved really cared about doing the project justice.
Cowboy Bebop actually has pretty good voice acting during the fight sequences too, It really sounds to me that they're fighting and talking, instead of separately. i hope you see this
As someone who's never even heard of Baccano, I gotta say from just that clip you showed it didn't come across as the "instantly know he's a psychopath walking in". I felt it much more like either a character lummox walking in, or a spoiled rich kid who knows he's untouchable. Only when it shows him choking someone it felt like danger to me. But that's just my 2ct.
Iron Dolphin still prefer sub But I can see how dubs like that are an exception, Spike’s voice definitely sounds fitting and not bland/generic Most anime dubs to me just sound bad to my ears, cannot do anything about it, that’s just how it comes off to me
most dubs sound bad because of the linguistic differences between japanese and english. lines that sound fine in Japanese can simply sound weird or forced/melodramatic when translated to english. couple that alongside the fact that theyre trying to sync the dub with the mouth movements of the characters too.
@@Skyfoogle that is one way to see it, maybe it's because of language differences, but check out the Latin American dub got Dragon Ball Z, it doesn't sound forced and there's a good lip sync overall It's, actually, really good
To be honest pretty much the whole VA cast for Borderlands 2 did an amazing job. My favorites are Tiny Tina (absolutely amazing, especially in her Dragon's Keep expansion), Handsome Jack, Sir Hammerlock and, of course, Claptrap. But everyone was amazing really.
Tiny's growth from crazy kid.. kid in denial of Roland's death.. then her tone to finally accepting it.. then back to crazy only to change back to a calm tone in the Commander Lilith DLC tiny being sad during the... uranus... boss fight. She has gone through alot and u can hear it
How do you feel about the Calypso twins from bl3 since the games been of for lil bit. Everyone seems to absolutely hate them but I think they are pretty ok. They remind me of a toned down jack
Listening to Connor talk about intensity being delivered without increasing volume instantly makes me think of Castlevania. Dracula's 'little Godbrand' scene is such an amazing demonstration of this.
When I was in university studying animation we had the legendary Tom Sito come and do a speech for all of us. He worked on the first Shrek movie and I remember him saying that during the early stages they were playing around with how Donkey would escape the dragon and Tom himself said that he imagines someone like Ed Murphy would get out of situations like this by trying to talk his way out. One thing led to another and in the end the whole donkey and dragon romance came to be because Tom Sito thought about the voice actors abilities and worked it into the story accordingly!
@@growlithekid yeah i personaly thought he was gonna be the main villain i thought it was anoying that he wasnt because hoyt was a realy boring sterotypical villain in my opinion
The Loki reveal gets me every time. P5 in general had great voicework even for the limitations of a JRPG with minimal cutscenes, but Goro Akechi is on a whole other level, although I also love Mercer's deadpan humor/aloofness as Yusuke and Jamieson Price pure relatability as Sojiro.
@@RatchetFanGirl27 same there are few rare occasions when I honestly find the dub really bad and then choose the sub, but overall dub are great. They create really funny lost in translation humor, they allow different VAs to put a unique spin on a character. For instance Goku in Japanese is a lot less heroic, aswell as a bit more serious. And ultimately some super meaning heartbreaking lines dont come off with the right emotion when it's in a different language.
Honestly everyone in Portal 2 is great. The sarcasm, hatred, and inner conflict of GLaDOS; the optimism, pride, and desparateness of Wheatley; and the stubbornness, determination, and decline of Cave Johnson. Chell's actress was really talented as well
The perfection that was Baccano, in every aspect, can probably never be captured again. Thank god the story continued in the novels. Really wish we had a season 2 though.
@@Emilytea came her expecting critter love and thats what I got, also that scene of Roy V. Lust was great outside of the booth because her an Travis are married @irene walker
You skipped out on my favourite part from the last of us, where Ellie just spills her feelings about the ordeal of being handed off to someone else by the person shes come to trust. "So don't tell me I'd be safer with someone else, when the truth is I'd just be more scared!" Beautiful 👌
These are good! Another person I'd point out is the English voice actor for Roy Mustang (In Fullmetal Alchemist:Brotherhood). He can be serious, emotional, sound like he's in pain, and also sound like he's talking to a good ol' lost friend to cover up a phone call (my favorite scene specifically lol)
Couple of recommendations for you Connor Ryuji Sakamoto - Persona 5 played by Max Mittelman Natsu Dragneel - Fairy Tail played by Todd Habberkorn Check them out if you do another video about good voice acting
How about Dameon Clarke's range though. He's both Handsome Jack AND Scar from the 2003 FMA. Which I would never have known had CDawg not mentioned the name of the VA
Someone with AMAZING voice acting is Kyle McCarly. Specifically in Nier:Automata as 9S. His voice acting has such an impact on how the game feels and really delivers the emotions and slow mental breakdown 9S is going through, especially in the Soul Box memories scene
It brings so much more to the table than the original Japanese dub. The two comic relief characters have a very slapstick tone, while the more serious characters have much more serious VA's which use the period accent so well. Actually immersive dub.
Most of the Jack's dialogue is improvised, such as the buttstallion and the "pretzels suck" line. People always praise how well written Jack is, but Dameon just winged most of it and thats why it so hard to replicate Jack's characer, only Dameon can do Jack

11 months later, and let me just say, I still picture those cold, distant, Vax stares when ever I think of Liam

Robin Williams voice in anything leaves my heart feeling warm and me with joy. It's just a feeling I cant help but...feeling.
Nice video.
Same here, I can't read and watch something if it's not in my native language.
When you don't understand the language, it's harder to distinguish bad VA.
i just like Dubs meself. reading bores me and i tend to lose focus after a while. besides that, i remember things i hear better then what i read.
Not to mention she is primarily an opera singer and not an actress
Oh 100%!!!!! GLaDOS has such a fucking cool voice. All of her lines in portal 2 are *_dripping_* with a malace that feels so real you ENTIRELY forget its voice acting at all.
Wheatley as well has an amazing preformance!
The game overall very good voice work. (You can also see it come out in characters like cave johnson or any of the cores.)

I really do love those videos and I live for this channel but I appreciate the input and Connor’s authentic admiration/respect shown in this video. It’s awesome.
It's so cool seeing Liam O'Brien getting a shoutout. Love him in Critical Role but haven't seen much of his voice acting career. Loved this!

Although hearing it pronounced "O'Bree-an" was painful.
Ashley too as Ellie :D
Honestly I would love to have Connor analyze the variety of tones, emotions, and simply the varied ranges each of the members of Critical Role showcase on air. Matt Mercer is obviously a man of hundreds of voices on the show, but the other players have so much variance too between the two campaigns.
"Holy nutballs, heh heh, what happened to your fricken face!?"

saaaaame. Handsome Jack is the TRUE hero!!
I think the reason why Handsome Jack is such a good villain is dependent on the voice more than the script. Like, the script is amazing, but what Dameon Clarke did with Jack is bone chilling. I can't even really explain it, it's just so good.
I love the fact that we share such a strong reverence for Handsome Jack -- especially his spoon story.
It's one of voice acting's golden moments.
What about Mark Hammill’s Joker in Batman The Animated Series?
"It is perfect...moving on"
Yes yes so much yes!
Doesn't necessarily need to be done. Everyone knows he is a god in that role.
And the Arkham series too
I am going with Richard Epcar.
"I, AM THE GODDAMN HERO!!!!"
Agree, this IS a great line, and DOES kinda define Jack's whole character. Still no the best line about heroism I've heard in a game though. That honor still goes to Spec Ops: The Line
Simple-Commentator-not-really Just curious, what was the line?

Simple-Commentator-not-really I’ll take a spoiler.
Are you talking about one of the endings or when you find Conrad?
@@kenny1904 "Do you feel like a Hero yet?"
I met the actor featured in this video for cowboy bebop at a con a few months ago, he was so nice and really makes you feel welcomed
Cowboy Bebop actually has pretty good voice acting during the fight sequences too, It really sounds to me that they're fighting and talking, instead of separately. i hope you see this
Nuketastic Al! Agreed
I love a girl who can kick my ass
As someone who's never even heard of Baccano, I gotta say from just that clip you showed it didn't come across as the "instantly know he's a psychopath walking in". I felt it much more like either a character lummox walking in, or a spoiled rich kid who knows he's untouchable. Only when it shows him choking someone it felt like danger to me.
But that's just my 2ct.
"You have no idea what loss is"
Seven words that absolutely break me everytime.
To anyone who thinks that dubs are trash, director of Cowboy Bebop, Shinichirō Watanabe, said he prefers the English dub.
Iron Dolphin still prefer sub
But I can see how dubs like that are an exception, Spike’s voice definitely sounds fitting and not bland/generic
Most anime dubs to me just sound bad to my ears, cannot do anything about it, that’s just how it comes off to me
@@asterito1653 have you tried Latin American dub? It's way better than English
most dubs sound bad because of the linguistic differences between japanese and english. lines that sound fine in Japanese can simply sound weird or forced/melodramatic when translated to english. couple that alongside the fact that theyre trying to sync the dub with the mouth movements of the characters too.
@@Skyfoogle that is one way to see it, maybe it's because of language differences, but check out the Latin American dub got Dragon Ball Z, it doesn't sound forced and there's a good lip sync overall

Scooter is amazing as well.
I love tiny tina so much.
Tina is especially impressive since it was Ashly's first real VA role. she's now one of the most sought after voices in the biz.
Speaking of Borderlands, you should review Tiny Tina, specifically on the ending cutscene of the Dragonkeep DLC
Or when she gets mega real in the commander lilith dlc
He should do Mister Torgue High-Five Flexington!
