There is a void in the offerings. 44 or 49 keys is necessary. 44+ keys provides enough range for playing properly with both hands while maintaining portability and desk fit. The keyboards with 37 keys have too few keys for proper playing. Keyboards over 50 keys are too wide. The narrower production keyboards also make a huge sacrifice in making the keyboard very deep so takes up too much space, there is no reason the keyboard needs to be so physically LxWxD dimensionally large, they do not need 2" or 3" bezels on each edge taking up desk space. Small MIDI keyboards have toy key feel or produce no sound so are useless in stand-alone, and the few MIDI keyboards which provide built-in sounds do not have enough keys to use for real playing (under 40 keys). The larger keyboards mimic acoustic pianos in that they cut out all modern functionality except playing and maybe some very very basic metronome/rhythm or record-playback options; this is 2000's era technology not 2020's technology. Even the simplest phone apps have more functionality than these larger keyboards and there is no reason for that lack. So basically the manufacturers seem to be segmenting the market into "those who want an acoustic piano in electric form and no features" vs. "those who want a production keyboard/arranger with electronic sounds". What is missing is the neoclassical orchestral hybrid keyboard which feels and plays like an acoustic (harpsichord has 49 keys and can play true pieces) yet is physically small enough to be luggable like a producer's mobile-use MIDI keyboard and has modern features of a producer's keyboard.

Was just going to send Mike an email about this but found this video so I’ll ask here and then email. 2008 Roland RD700GX with the NX expansion. I’m using a pair of Roland 30CM speakers with this. Thinking about the Roland JC40 as a speaker for this but seems like a bit of overkill since the keyboard generates its own sound. Go for 120 haha. Hey, I’ll look at your piano section, you probably have recommendations there. Cheers

Waiting for a keyboard that has a large touchscreen, innovative mpe capability, sliders and can operate wirelessly (without being tethered via usb-c cable). It’s 2024 and there’s a serious need for innovative keyboard makers! Contact me for ideas. Gesh!
