For context, Versus is a song that takes place in a bossfight where you fight a character thats meant to be a near perfect rival.
The first fight is a battle of mercy. Your opponet onlt wishes to spar, however in the second, learning you're out for blood, all gloves are off.
(hakita has yet to say if the first battle was a friendly spar or an actual battle to the death. But i have a feeling its the latter.)

The best way I can describe the ULTRAKILL soundtrack in terms of vibes:
Act 1: Aggressive power trip with depressive undertones.
Act 2: A frivolous journey of discovery. Mysterious and grand. This time the depressive undertones are more subtle.
Act 3: Overwhelming and terrifying. Any time you survive an encounter you either feel extremely relieved or still in a state of minor shock.

Damn. You COOKED for your addition to Duel. Hats off, that was wild.
As others have said, Versus and Duel both play during boss battles against a sort of mirror-match version of your character - to get more specific, you play as blood-fueled combat android V1, and the boss fights that go with those songs are both against a similar-looking combat android named V2.
An interesting thing to note gameplay-wise is that both fights against V2 end with the player taking an arm from them, which can then be used as an alternative to the game's base melee attack (which is a quick, single-target attack that can reflect/parry all kinds of projectiles with proper timing) - the first bossfight against V2 gives you the Knuckleblaster, a slow and often less-used choice that takes a second to wind up but unleashes a powerful, knockback-inducing AOE blast when it's finished (balanced out by a cooldown and the fact that unlike the default melee, it cannot parry projectiles).
After the second (and currently final) battle with V2, you get the green Whiplash arm - it's a grappling hook, you can use it to swing around, grab certain objects (like skull keys or torches) from a distance, and grapple enemies to pull them to you (if they're smaller/lighter than you) or pull you to them (if they're bigger/heavier than you).
Also, for both fights V2 gets a watered-down version of the moveset you'd have access to at the point in the game you initially fight them - to slightly misquote Max0r, this makes it easier to prepare for the fight, because V2 is limited by your moveset, but it makes it harder to win the fight, because *V2 has your moveset* and your moveset can generally be described as INCREDIBLY LETHAL (when used competently).
The green arms named whiplash if you wanna edit your comment for it mate B)

you should definitely look into the new Violence Layer Soundtrack, every track in the new layer are so well composed and portray such emotion. Tracks like "The World Looks White/Red", "Do Robots Dream of Eternal Sleep? + Hear! The Siren Song Call of Death", and "Suffering Leaves Suffering Leaves + Danse Macabre" are all masterpieces, and each one with a + plays into each other very well. I definitely recommend reacting to those.
Where is my love child, WAR WITHOUT REASON?
Youuu... YOU DID NOT INCLUDE WAR WITHOUT REASON!
WHERE IS WAR WITHOUT REASON!!!!!!
you did not put War Without Reason IM MAD!!!!! (joking, but do NOT forget about that song, please.)
It was truly... A War Without Reason.
You are correct mentally on duel. I like too picture versus as what they are commanded too do, but duel is more personal, both have grown stronger, but one wants revenge from losing the other fight, it becomes personal instead of an order. They both have advanced in power from their last fight, this will tell who is better.
I think you'll love "he is my light in the darkness" from Ultrakill. It's another classical like piece with hakitas chaotic touch and the stakes invert halfway into the fight. The song reflects that
cant wait to see him react to the violence layer soundtrack, specially for "The world looks red"

To explain the shimmery ambient noise at the end of Versus and Duel, the album releases of the ULTRAKILL ost often have fluid transitions between a lot of the songs, so the end of Versus smoothly flows in the the beginning of Cold Winds, and the end of Duel transitions into Deep Blue
The "hopeful" section of altars of apostacy always came off as more mournful to me, but thats likely due to the context in game as its the theme of a level building up to a boss that lost *everything* because of your first fight.
Being a big fan of Ultrakill and its lore, its a treat seeing your reactions and analysis of each piece! Can't wait for more!
The fact that hakita can make sudden modulations sound so good without the use of pivot chords is extremely admirable!
As a side note, as someone who's in Theory IV and has done analysis in classical music, it's always really enjoyable to hear your analyses on VGM, it's helping my ear a ton with noticing patterns/techniques in these tracks, very informative content as always!!
It would be so cool to see him watch the duel down the SIDE OF A PYRAMID as the climax starts. I can't think of a cooler final phase to a boss, sliding down a monument while you have a gun battle.
Pretty sure thats a thing now in the second battle
@@Neonskyes3 Try reading my comment a second time.
Oh ok mb I thought you said imagine if they slid down the pyramid sorry
But yeah I agree
i didnt notice until now but towards the end of alters of apostasy it mixes with castle vein
I love at 18:00 you call the rhythm more ‘danceable’. In the game, this level takes place at around the halfway mark. Compared to versus which takes place near the beginning.
This is just a simple connection I noticed… Versus is a brawl, a slugfest between 2 fighters. Versus reprise is quite literally a dance, 2 destructively fast opponents locked in battle a second time…
I genuinely wish you react to the music in order, because you miss some key parts in songs. This game, and oh boy I know a lot of games, has the most emotional Leitmotifs I’ve ever heard, and it’s beyond amazing.

"no react in order!"
Lol you lot need to make up your minds.
@@StringPlayerGamerOfficial he didn't say he wanted layer 7 ost
@@StringPlayerGamerOfficialplease excuse the VERY long response but i really hope this clarifies things
most layer 7 songs are only repeating leitmotifs between eachother, while the other songs in the soundtrack have leitmotifs from other songs
a sort of guide/list of the tracks with leitmotifs you might not have heard would be:
"castle vein" leitmotif repeats in "hall of remains" (aka the final part of altars of apostasy)
"requiem" leitmotif repeats in both "glory" (a little different) and in "order"
"divine intervention" and "the death of god's will" (the same sort of sister songs as versus and versus reprise)
"sands of tide" and "war"
also thank you sir stringplayergames for the wonderful content hope this helped👍
also if i missed anything important please forgive me
aside from like 2 or 3 motifs, ultrakill's songs are pretty isolated. you don't need to know the entire background context of a song to know that it's really, really good

Altars of Apostasy is what happens when YOU need boss music. Because you are the boss. Everything in this game is desperately trying to survive you and there will be no mercy. They have blood and you need blood; they WILL give it to you.
The ending bit of alters of apostasy is called halls of sacrilegious remains and is combination of alters of apostasy and castle vein(another song in the ost)
2:19 This part in Alters Of Apostasy ALWAYS makes me feel like Gabriel is throwing every little enemy he can to try stall you. (Gabriel is the boss right after the level this song plays in if you didn't know.)
The last part of altars of apostasy is a trowback to castle vein, the song for the level 1-3, which in itself is a reference to castlevania.
i really recommend listening to "the world looks white" and "the world looks red" next (in that order), and also "war without reason"

i had no idea how classically inspired Altars of Apostasy was but... oh my god it really is
The final section of altars of apostasy may give u castle vein vibes. Thats cos its called “halls of sacrilegious remains” while the level castle vein plays in is called “halls of sacred remains” halls of sacred remains also has a boss at the end of it, while the room where halls of sacrilegious remains plays has u fighting 2 of those while enemies spawn when one of them dies
Versus is the theme of V2, this games version of the “im u but better” trope. Duel is the theme of ur rematch against V2, and the very egyptian sounding drone ambience comes from the desert theme of the layer where the rematch happens (hell u literally slide down a pyramid while gunning each other its cathartic af)
The vid for duel shows blurred gameplay of the fight as well
its also neat how you hear Castlevein in 1-3, when you encounter your first Hideous Mass, and then you fight 2 of them later on again in 6-1 during the Halls of Sacrilegious Remains segment, which is a direct reference/callback to the earlier Castlevein theme (and ofc both of them are Castlevania references)
Trust me, you'll *love* "Chord of Crooked Saints."
6:35 this part of Altars of Apostasy is a reference to a previous track, "Castle Vein", which was in a previous video. The name of the level with Castle Vein, "Halls of Sacred Remains", is repurposed in this one, as the section in Altars of Apostasy is called Halls of Sacrilegious Remains. Additionally, this part of the song is triggered when you begin a boss fight where you fight two of the Hideous Mass, the end boss from Halls of Sacred Remains.
I think I saw you playing your violin with a vocalist at Magfest? I was listening from a balcony area and you were both stunning

I don’t think I would have considered this game without coming across your channel and hearing the music through your reactions. Thanks for sharing your expertise and thoughts, clearly the soundtrack is worth the price of admission.
I love hearing your references to other music because a lot of the composition feels familiar but I can never place my finger on it.
The added part to versus was super good and made it truly feel like a showdown which the original lacks.
But oh my god the addition to duel made me feel like I was right there in the level. It made it truly feel like the deathmatch that 4-4 is.
I’m glad your still making videos on the music of ultrakill. It’s cause of your first video on ultrakills music I ended up getting the game myself and I’ve been enjoying it a lot. Thank you for making these videos on ultrakill.
"there's some chaos happening" best description of the entire game i ever heard lol
I do have to say I appreciate you making your own little twist/addition to the melody. Genuinely adds to both the feel of the music itself and the genuineness of the reactions.
Its crazy that there are tons of other songs with just as good composure (if not better) that would take forever to go through
Watching this after P - ranking the second layer feels great
Also, since you are looking for more soundtracks, I would recommend you the Subnautica soundtrack.
About the game: In Subnautica you play as a lone survivor of the crash of the ship Aurora from the Alterra corporation. It starts off slow with you collecting various materials and minerals in the shallow water, but as time goes on you are forced to explore deeper waters for blueprints from ship fragments and data from many alien laboratories. The deeper you go, the more dangerous (and the bigger) are the creatures that you will encounter. Thankfully you'll be able to navigate the murky water relatively safely in diverse ships.
About the soundtrack: Most of the tracks are very ambient, and they differenciate from another like the biomes or scenes that they play in do.
My personal recommendations are:
-Abandon Ship
-Leviathan
-Red Alert
-Salutations (Main menu, introduction)
-Islands beneath the sea
-Lost River
The first three are more intense and the rest is ambient. I hope you'll see this and maybe even make a video to Subnautica, as part three of it is up and coming this year!

Som of the most iconic musics for the Ultrakill fanbase, great video as aways, you have no idea how it is fulfilling to have a channel dedicated to something like that.
A personal note of myne, renember "Tenebre rosso sangue" from one of your preview reaction videos from Ultrakill? Keygen church has actually made a even bigger and "epic" song more heavily inspired by classical music while having the usual mixmash of musical genres that Ultrakill does the best. "Asgretalos" is the name of the song, and since i don't think its technically inside the game it can't slip inside a reaction video but definitely worth checking it and hey! Just a comment saying if it was actually worth it would made my day.
Keep up the good work representing our favorite games OSTs, love your work.
Man I would love to see your reaction to ,,Deep blue" because every time I listen to that it feels like I am ascending to another dimension
Just saying, I feel like hearing the whole ULTRAKILL soundtrack in order from start to end is an amazing experience, as it tells a story by itself
yeah I played ultrakill from the start and I loved every single ost, it just gives u some determination to actually not fail, every ost suits it's levels, i also played cyber grind with some of my favorite themes and I just still love it

This is awesome. As I love music reaction videos,
I would like a petition, *to make him react to ACE COMBAT MUSIC, like Zero and The Unsung War*
Funnily enough, the OST does just straight up have a Bach song, specifically BWV 369 "I call to you, Lord Jesus Christ"
You may forget but Altars of apostasy have a Castle vein leitmotif in the end
loved this video
You gotta listen to "Death of God's Will"
Can we just admire how he did the SOLO ON VERSUS?!
you have got to listen to The Death Of Gods Will full mix
Would it be possible for you to react to the OST from the game Kenshi? ('Pit' is a good one to test the waters to see if it does well)
Also, all of the tracks are Ambient
Really love watching your reactions to different games' OSTs, love the deeper look we get thanks to your simplified analytical approach - no matter how many times I've listened to some songs, you always point out things I've never noticed before!
If you decide to give some Ultrakill songs another listen, I'd totally recommend "Unstoppable Force", "Divine Intervention" and most definitely "Deep Blue"!
Deep Blue features some really beautiful elements that aren't seen in other songs from the Ultrakill OST (as far as I know ^^)
I love your videos and your Music please keep producing your awesome man!
Also if anyone here does read this its a lil thing I think might be true , you can actually hear the +ENRAGED sound in altars of apostasy as the starting beat and the backing track. This is also noticeable in the Chord of the crooked saint, which has got the repeated machine running sound from the +ENRAGED but toned down and made quieter. Which literally shows that Gabriel is enraged hence the sky of Heresy being red.
I highly reccommend both "Hear! The Siren Song Call Of Death" and "War Without Reason", they're the 2 most recent additions to the game's soundtrack and are both amazing. Please give them a listen!
If you end up doing the more recent music, made for the 'violence' layer in the game, I hope to see you play along to some of it, because there are some very wonderful and very emotional guitar and violin melodies that I would love to hear you accompany with your strings!
17:14 I remember the first time I was going through Greed (the Layer of Hell you fight in for this song). I had gotten through all the other three levels and suffered long and hard just to get to the final level of that Layer. I still had bad memories of dropping half an hour just to beat V2 (the robot fight in “Versus”) the first time round.
I was going through the jump pads and corridors thinking “okay, just gotta get through this last level and I’m done” and wondering to myself “wait a second, why haven’t I encountered any enemies yet? This is odd.”
By 17:20 when the doors open and I saw V2 again (sitting there and waiting for me) all I could think was “YOU AGAIN?!”
War Without Reason next please
Lets goooo! Ultrakill reaction!
Btw you are sick with the metal violi!,, never stop playing it after the reactions! It's awesomeeee
I’d love to hear you thoughts on citizen sleeper which has very synthetic sounds, but also really portrays emotion. Such as my favorite songs, photosynthetic skin, prismatic lens, yatagan, and among ruins. Id also love to hear your reaction towards the music of signalis which is very ambient, sometimes hopeful, mostly fearful, and loss oriented. And project wingman which is very orchestral, intense, and cinematic. All I can tell you about and recommend songs for if you’re interested.
oh god hes getting into the ultrakill sound track im scared
Maybe I'm the only one, but Altars of Apostasy gave me chills when I first listened to it. It still does sometimes.
the second part of alters of apostasy is a callback to a song in limbo called "castle vain" and is why this song hit hard for a lot of players
you should absolutely do the violence layer tracks. war without reason is my favorite but I bet you'd love the calmness of many of the other themes
YESSSS MORE ULTRAKILL!!!
I will say, I love Alters of Apostasy, but there's something to be said for its proceeding track, Chord of the Crooked Saints, being an oppressive buildup to it, even if it's not musically interesting to hear one chord trailing on for over two minutes LOL
Also love both Versus and its Reprise, they both have different vibes to offer and you nailed it when you said the reprise expands the original into something more cinematic, as the stakes have gotten higher.
So happy you're enjoying this OST! It's changed my life.
Mankind is lazy
Blood is used
Hell sounds awesome
i'd love to hear you listen to Divine Intervention and its reprise, The Death Of God's Will, a lot of people have reacted to the second on its own, but i'm very fond of the first and i'd love to see someone look at the differences between the two
by the way, the end of Altars of Apostasy is the motif and key from a previous level, coming from the song Castle Vein
it is a reference because in that level playing Castle Vein you fought a boss, and in this level you’re fighting two of them
