To allow the robot to do that work for him would defeat the point of his revolt.
at the beginning of war, there's talking, and at the end of the right before it is him appearing, so you usually get to the flesh panopticon, ready to fight it, but Sisyphus breaks out: then war starts as he talks to you. Would recommend to watch a playthrough of P2, even if its not on camera. Its cool to hear the songs in context
an important thing to note: the sections that sound like this one here (14:46) are all a leitmotif from one of the levels in the game, that being "god damn the sun" in the greed layer... which is deeply connected to these pieces of music... except for tenebre
The balance of chaos and order in ultrakill is a very fine line, yet Ultrakill's composers basically parkour on, off and around that line line a gymnast. I can not wait to hear what you have to say when act 3 comes out (eventually).
It’s no coincidence that some of the least-enjoyed tracks of the game tend to lean too far on one side, usually chaos (A Complete And Utter Breaking Of The Senses is the best example of this).
So, one thing to note: most of the games music is done by hakita and his group, Heaven Pierce Her... Tenebre Rosso Sangue, Ultrachurch, Hateful, The Cyber Grind, and any obvious public domain songs are done by different artists (Keygen Church, Health, and Meganeko respectively for the former) Honestly, its genuinely cool to know how much effort hakita put into the soundtrack and making the motifs work
as a person who grew up listening to classical music the organ is one of my favorite instruments but as I grew up I would grow to love rock as well and definitely got into metal as a teenager and still love it even now so to hear that first track combining my first 2 musical loves, IT WAS AMAZING! to me it did not feel like it was too much it felt just right to me and I am very impressed, you are not wrong to call the composer a genius for it to know both genres so well to combine them that masterfully is no small feat and this can be said of the other songs as well, I'm going to have to checkout not just this soundtrack but everything he has done after this, I thank you once again for this video and for exposing me to this music I would have otherwise never heard

My absolute favorite thing about the Sands of Tide motif in War is how it rises and begins to build but then the harmony cuts out and it falls right back to the beginning. Just like a certain king who's life is defined by futile struggle.
Literally the reason why I love this song so much is because of how it combines gothic baroque with metal so flawlessly. I'm curious to see what your reaction to "The Collector" from the Goddess of Victory: Nikke OST would be; I have a feeling you'd find that one quite interesting.
Awesome reaction, man. Love the comparisons to classical pieces! If you still plan on listening to ultrakill’s soundtrack, may I suggest the songs “Death of god’s will”, “altars of apostasy”, and “death odyssey”.
The great thing about these songs is they're not only a clash between futuristic and old, but it's the boss theme of your character. This is what your enemies hear and feel. You're here for one reason: To feed. Humanity is dead. Blood is fuel. Hell is full.
Your analysis of War really hits home. Especially the part about characters fighting a battle they're going to lose. This is the theme of a boss who tried to arm an insurrection against heaven and lost horribly. He knew he was going to lose but still tried. Anyways if you do a part 3, I recommend Deep Blue and Death Odyssey, as well as Versus.
the part at 23:10 is the leitmotif of sands of tide, the song which happens at level 4-2 in the game. this is a reference to where Sisyphus prime (with this song being his boss theme) was sent for his punishment and where most of the important things in his lore happening, further connecting him to the 4th layer of dante's hell
I would absolutely ADORE more Ultrakill content from you! You've already knocked out some of the very popular songs, and I'm sure many people will suggest the same few boss themes, but I'd be very interested in what you'd have to say about non-boss tracks like Guts and Glory, Deep Blue, Death Odessey, and Altars of Apostasy. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
I've never been able to just head-bop in sync with another person in a video. It's great to see that you're listening and considering all options that fans give you, and putting this game on such a high pedistal of music composition. Thank you for the video, it was awesome.
Re: War, your notes about futility and hope are very appropriate - it's the theme of Sisyphus, who *almost* successfully rebelled against heaven in this setting. It's cool that Hakita put that in, and just as cool that you picked up on it. Suggestion: To The Edge, from FFXIV - I won't spoil the context, but the composer, Soken, does like his clever composition, and the context is a throwback to early FF games. You might have some insights!
I really like how you almost instantly picked up on the "futile struggle" bit in War because that is literally the main point of what that song is used in. That song is paired with Sisyphus, which, as you might know, his story was an eternal struggle, and for that to be portrayed in a song so well that someone can notice it right off of the bat is crazy.
hey another amazing song from ultrakill is "chaos" and "heaven pierce her" i think you might like it because its the staple song of ultrakill in my eyes at least and its just the best songs in my opinion.
"To him, fighting an impossible battle with full knowledge of its futility and taking joy in just the act of resistance itself is the ultimate rebellion against the oppressor. One must imagine Sisyphus happy."
If you haven’t listened to it yet, I’d definitely recommend listening to sands of tide in your own time. Also this kind of content is great. You gained a subscriber today.
You should react to the levels of the songs you listened to: Castle Vein: Level 1-3 "Halls of Sacred Remains" The Cyber Grind: it only plays in the infinite survival mode "The Cyber Grind" so it doesn't have a level Order (& Chaos which you haven't reacted to yet): Level P-1 "Soul Survivor" Tenebre Rosso Sangue, Pandemonium & War: Level P-2 "Wait of The World"
god i love this games soundtrack SO. DAMN. MUCH. im so glad you reacted to more, and hope you continue reacting to this because theres a lot of absolute bangers left, couldnt wait any longer for this vid, also gotta say your covers ALWAYS go so hard
I really adore how much the music of ultrakill is used to reflect the lore and story of the world. Like he said, “War” in sections reflects a feeling similar to music that plays when hero’s in a movie know they are about to enter a loosing battle or general futile fighting. But he also mentions in parts there is hope/perseverance even still knowing there will be a loss. Such as in the lore of Sisyphus in the game. Having to fight a futile war knowing fully he will lose but preserving for the sake of living fully
ULTRAKILL SPOILERS AHEAD: That "Wibbly-wobbly" end at the end of pandemonium was for a very good reason. It represents the complete change of pace in your fight ingame: Instead of killing the flesh panopticon through traditional means, you simply wake up Sisyphus and he (in the most literal sense) breaks out. Tearing it to pieces from the inside out. The prison wasn't containing him, simply... "Homing" him. That end of the music represents this in the players incredible confusion as they see the healthbar sink to nothing.
That part is such a cool design choice on hakitas part. The despair I felt upon realizing panopticon has double the health of flesh. Only for all of that health to disintegrate . It makes for such a good buildup to daddy sisyphus
Kinda sounds like the Panopticon is screaming in pain, too. The slowdown as Sisyphus' fist reaches through. This is the Panopticon feeling the impact. Followed by the screeching panic and pain in the speedup/pitch up, and the eventual encroaching of death in the second slowdown. It's as if the music itself was being emitted from the big cube of shmeat
@@TenuousCatz>as if the music itself was being emitted from the big cube of shmeat. Pandemonium is Sisyphus' equivalent of rain noises. It reminds him of battle to help him sleep.
the funny thing about ultrakill's soundtrack is hakita is one of the biggest musical nerds around, with standards to fit he carved out a really particular set of styles, and expects people to keep up with it, be they players or guest composers it's pretty easy to tell how the game's artistic direction gradually improves, and the ost probably shows that better than everything else
That Adagio for Strings fact is actually really interesting because thats exactly what Sisyphus is. He knows he cant win, he knows he can't beat V1 yet hes embraced the struggle and doesnt "regret a second of it".
this is honestly amazing. you pointed out things that many of us (me especially) wouldve never realized and it's great to how you react to all these beat drops :D
Despite being an Ultrakill fan, I actually haven't taken the time to get familiar with its soundtrack, so I'm excited to see your analysis on it! I'm especially unfamiliar with some of the songs because I haven't seen the P-rank content yet, so this is my first time listening to Tenebre Rosso Sangue, Pandemonium, and War, three songs that are all put together and take place in a part of the game I've yet to reach haha.
A new layer just released for Ultrakill, and they made some ABSOLUTE BANGERS! I suggest you listen to "Suffering Leaves Suffering Leaves", "Hear! The Siren Song Call of Death" and "Th World Looks White"
i think you should try out "the abyss and the serpent" next a slightly underrated one from the soundtrack (also "altars of apostasy", another great one)
It's a rather small OST that's gone under the radar, but I think the soundtrack of The Case of the Golden Idol and its DLC The Spider of Lanka would very much something up your alley that you could give a lot of commentary to. Some standout tracks I would recommend are: The Watchful Eye, Secretive Society, Intoxicating Dinner, Crowning Celebration, and Alleyways of Lanka.
To hear your reaction to some of Chris Christodoulou's works from the video game Risk of Rain 2 would be fantastic! Risk of Rain 2 has a slew of relaxing, cinematic, and powerful songs that seem to be inspired by prog rock and electronic music from the 70s. Some great ones to check out are: - …con lentitud poderosa - The Rain Formerly Known as Purple - You're Gonna Need a Bigger Ukulele
if you do more ultrakill tracks, I recommend "Divine Intervention" and "The Death of God's Will". Also, your analysis of WAR was pretty spot on to me, or your read on the vibes it gives off, due to the character that it plays for. Very good video. :]
The ULTRAKILL soundtrack is so full of amazing stuff, you could probably make two more videos like this one, maybe even three, without any drop in the intensity and power these songs possess. For specific requests, Altars of Apostasy + Halls of Sacrilegious Remains is one I'd love to hear since you liked Castle Vein so much. Other than that, there's also the two songs that the main themes of Order and War bortow motifs from, which are Requiem and Sands of Tide, and I'd love to hear you listen to how those motifs are in the original songs and deconstruct how they sound compared to the boss versions and how different they feel. There's also Death Odyssey because its just a fucking banger of a song. Finally, you could make one video covering all of Gabriel's themes, which are Bach 18: I Call to You, Lord Jesus Christ (you don't have to listen to that one if you already know it), Divine Intervention, Fallen Angel, and The Death of God's Will. Those should be listened to all in a row IMO. As a bonus, if you get the OST via Bandcamp, you can read developer commentary from the game's composer regarding almost every song on the OST (the songs for the prime sanctums were released for free and so don't have commentary, but all others have a paragraph or more written about how they were made).
I really like how accurate your description is, it show that you both know and love music. And damn, that part you payed adding to the song was superb and fitted perfectly 8:44
It's interesting what you brought up in the Adagio for Strings segment, especially as an emotional comparison because its very apt for Sisyphus's story. In the lore he was punished by being given an impossible task to complete by Heaven in order to break his will, which was to roll a boulder up a hill for eternity. But Sisyphus never broke, he just kept doing this task while waiting for the day when he can strike back against his oppressors. After God disappeared and sent Heaven into total chaos Sisyphus lead an insurrection against Heaven. He knew full well that it was impossible to win a war against Heaven but did it anyways because to him the act of resistance itself, despite the odds of success, was the ultimate form of rebellion. I just love Sisyphus and Minos, both of their stories are just tragic and I can't wait to see who we get for Act 3.
If you're planning on doing another video on ULTRAKILL, There are three specific songs I recommend that I think you'll have a blast with. Sands Of Tide (4-2 GOD DAMN THE SUN) Death Odyssey (5-3 SHIP OF FOOLS) Altars Of Apostasy (6-1 CRY FOR THE WEEPER)
I doubt you will ever read this, but I would highly suggest checking out Meganeko's Moonlight sonata 3rd movement cover. They are the same band who did Cybergrind for this game. It is honestly such a fun cover that mixes together so many different styles into such an iconic classic song. One of my absolute favorites of theirs, right up there with their song space magic.
One really amazing track in the soundtrack is Deep Blue. Super unique instrumentation and pace in comparisson to a lot of the tracks that were previously made for the game. Honestly I hope you do a "discog dive" similar to Pizza Tower after it blew up because this soundtrack rivals it in quality and it consistently pulls out bangers and unique sounds to the video game landscape.
I've commented this on a previous video, I'm sure, but I think you might enjoy some pieces of Armored Core music. It's a less popular series than most, but with the announcement of 6, interest in the series is definitely picking up. I'd specifically recommend listening to "Remember" from For Answer and its remix, "Mechanized Memories" from Verdict Day.
If you like Tenbre Rosso Sangue, I heavily implore you to check out more of Keygen Church's/Master Boot Record's music. I've been listening to them way before their work with Ultrakill and they do not disappoint.
I would recommend checking out Ultrakill OST Versus and Duel side by side. Versus plays during a bossfight with a certain robot, that represents a better version of you, but if you beat it, you meet it down the line again, wanting revenge. Thats where Duel comes in. The songs are the same, but different, and I think it would be fun to compare the two, from the point of how they change and what they represent. And also, they are absolute bangers of battle music. Also, if you make the video in the future and wanted to add one more song to the list, I would humbly suggest Castle Vein. It's a great baroque-rock-style song.
amazing notes and analysis as always i suggest taking a look at the newest WIP hakita has posted these days on his channel "The World Looks White/The World Looks Red" its very interesting considering the rest of the soundtrack

The balance of chaos and order in ultrakill is a very fine line, yet Ultrakill's composers basically parkour on, off and around that line line a gymnast. I can not wait to hear what you have to say when act 3 comes out (eventually).
I see what you did there
It’s no coincidence that some of the least-enjoyed tracks of the game tend to lean too far on one side, usually chaos (A Complete And Utter Breaking Of The Senses is the best example of this).
I'm here to support you doing what you do :3 And because Ultrakill's OST is an absolute banger.
So, one thing to note: most of the games music is done by hakita and his group, Heaven Pierce Her... Tenebre Rosso Sangue, Ultrachurch, Hateful, The Cyber Grind, and any obvious public domain songs are done by different artists (Keygen Church, Health, and Meganeko respectively for the former)
Honestly, its genuinely cool to know how much effort hakita put into the soundtrack and making the motifs work
heaven pierce her is not a group, it's a one man project
@@fikou_ I wasn't sure if it was just hakita so I said group
Heaven Pierce Her Is Hakita's artistic name
as a person who grew up listening to classical music the organ is one of my favorite instruments but as I grew up I would grow to love rock as well and definitely got into metal as a teenager and still love it even now so to hear that first track combining my first 2 musical loves, IT WAS AMAZING! to me it did not feel like it was too much it felt just right to me and I am very impressed, you are not wrong to call the composer a genius for it to know both genres so well to combine them that masterfully is no small feat and this can be said of the other songs as well, I'm going to have to checkout not just this soundtrack but everything he has done after this, I thank you once again for this video and for exposing me to this music I would have otherwise never heard
I appreciate the inclusion of samples from the pieces you reference! It makes it a lot easier to understand exactly what you mean.
hell yeah, I was really hoping you'd cover more Ultrakill OST! This is like my most favorite game ever
really? Finish each of these quotes (start to finish) for absolutely no prize except bragging rights.
Machine. Turn back now…
Your kind have taken everything from me machine.
Ahh. (That’s all you get)
Be not afraid sinner.
This.
@@Totally_Not_Eden68 The layers of this palace are not for your kind. Turn back, or you will be crossing the will of God.
(i forgot this but i know it's gabe 2)
So concludes the life and times of King Sisyphus. A fitting end to an existence defined by futile struggle. And I DON'T.. regret.. a SECOND of it! (insert laughter here)
(i think this is the ferryman 5-3 saving quote but i never cared about listening to it all)
This prison, to hold.... ME?
@@Desired_Dawn I'm pretty sure the second one is
"Machine, you've taken everything from me. And now, all that remains, is PERFECT. HATRED"
@@Desired_Dawnthe "Ahh" could be followed up by "free.. at last." as well lol
@@Desired_Dawn wrong also it’s start to finish so if it was Minos prime you would go from Ahhh.. to DEATH.
Yooooo that electric violin bit over tennebre rosso sangue goes HARD, good job
28:54 I love your playing here so much! The intro reminds me of some of the ost from celeste.
Frfr
I really want to see him listen to Guts and Glory, as well as Chord of the Crooked Saints and Altars
I've never been able to just head-bop in sync with another person in a video. It's great to see that you're listening and considering all options that fans give you, and putting this game on such a high pedistal of music composition. Thank you for the video, it was awesome.
You HAVE to listen to these with the dialogue included. Its a hell of an experience.
23:10 this part has a leitmotif from a previous track that also has ties to Sisyphus Prime, it's called Sands of Tide and is well worth a listen
The way you made Pandemonium have a new section simply by adding one more instrument was just so good, Good job man.
When you add the violin, it reminds me of Ne Obliviscaris. They're an amazing band
hey another amazing song from ultrakill is "chaos" and "heaven pierce her" i think you might like it because its the staple song of ultrakill in my eyes at least and its just the best songs in my opinion.
"To him, fighting an impossible battle with full knowledge of its futility and taking joy in just the act of resistance itself is the ultimate rebellion against the oppressor. One must imagine Sisyphus happy."
8:45 nah that solo was nasty, i'm losing my mind in the best way possible
If you haven’t listened to it yet, I’d definitely recommend listening to sands of tide in your own time.
Also this kind of content is great. You gained a subscriber today.
One could imagine Sisyphus happy
You should react to the levels of the songs you listened to:
Castle Vein: Level 1-3 "Halls of Sacred Remains"
The Cyber Grind: it only plays in the infinite survival mode "The Cyber Grind" so it doesn't have a level
Order (& Chaos which you haven't reacted to yet): Level P-1 "Soul Survivor"
Tenebre Rosso Sangue, Pandemonium & War: Level P-2 "Wait of The World"
Did you watch part 1?
@@LionmightOfficial yes
But heres the crazy part WAR transitions so well with ORDER.
Good god these string solos are making me act up!
agreed
I just realized there are bits of Unstoppable force played in “War” at around 23:13. It’s slowed and complimented by other instruments. Amazing
I love the super derpy Hornet in the background
holy molly the violin fits so well in tenebre rosso sangue
god i love this games soundtrack SO. DAMN. MUCH. im so glad you reacted to more, and hope you continue reacting to this because theres a lot of absolute bangers left, couldnt wait any longer for this vid, also gotta say your covers ALWAYS go so hard
26:37 You just perfectly described the punishment of Sisyphus. Futile struggle is the entire fight of Sisyphus against his captors
I've always hated strings, at least those in orchestra except for the bass, but this guy actually knows how to make the violin sound beautiful
ULTRAKILL SPOILERS AHEAD:
That "Wibbly-wobbly" end at the end of pandemonium was for a very good reason.
“This prison to hold ME?!”
@@TenuousCatzthat’s the scary part
@@TenuousCatz>as if the music itself was being emitted from the big cube of shmeat.
Pandemonium is Sisyphus' equivalent of rain noises. It reminds him of battle to help him sleep.
I love the accompaniment you played to Tenebre Rosso Sangue; beautiful!
the funny thing about ultrakill's soundtrack is
hakita is one of the biggest musical nerds around, with standards to fit
he carved out a really particular set of styles, and expects people to keep up with it, be they players or guest composers
it's pretty easy to tell how the game's artistic direction gradually improves, and the ost probably shows that better than everything else
I'm especially unfamiliar with some of the songs because I haven't seen the P-rank content yet, so this is my first time listening to Tenebre Rosso Sangue, Pandemonium, and War, three songs that are all put together and take place in a part of the game I've yet to reach haha.
did not know pandemonium would sound so well with violin but by god it does
It’s funny how much effort they put into pandemonium just for it to be heard in game for less than a minute
The motif's all hit different once you've heard them in context of the levels
A new layer just released for Ultrakill, and they made some ABSOLUTE BANGERS! I suggest you listen to "Suffering Leaves Suffering Leaves", "Hear! The Siren Song Call of Death" and "Th World Looks White"
i think you should try out "the abyss and the serpent" next
a slightly underrated one from the soundtrack
(also "altars of apostasy", another great one)
Its still not done i cant fully rest knowing you still have more ultrakill music to hear that blows your eardrums
Niko oneshot
The calm and intense versions of every theme really mix well allowing smooth transition
To hear your reaction to some of Chris Christodoulou's works from the video game Risk of Rain 2 would be fantastic! Risk of Rain 2 has a slew of relaxing, cinematic, and powerful songs that seem to be inspired by prog rock and electronic music from the 70s. Some great ones to check out are:
- …con lentitud poderosa
- The Rain Formerly Known as Purple
- You're Gonna Need a Bigger Ukulele
Antarctic Oscillation too!
Do not forget RoR1 OST, stuff like Precipitation, Coalescence. Real good shit
3:20 this was my first reaction to this song too
if you do more ultrakill tracks, I recommend "Divine Intervention" and "The Death of God's Will". Also, your analysis of WAR was pretty spot on to me, or your read on the vibes it gives off, due to the character that it plays for. Very good video. :]
After listening to all the soundtracks, Keygen Church’s Rosso Sangre will always be my favorite. Nobody can shred an organ like that dude can 🫡 ❤
The ULTRAKILL soundtrack is so full of amazing stuff, you could probably make two more videos like this one, maybe even three, without any drop in the intensity and power these songs possess.
I just love Sisyphus and Minos, both of their stories are just tragic and I can't wait to see who we get for Act 3.
as a fan myself
i liked every prespective its not always a opera singer
always change prespective of other proffesional musician
Ultrakill was HEAVY inspired by doom (massacre in hell + dark metal ect) which reflects in many of the songs
"a character walking to their own defeat, but accepting it."
Literally just guessed Sisyphus' whole character
He kind of just described the entirety of Sisyphus's story in Ultrakill using just the music as reference... goddamn Hakita knows what he's doing!
If you're planning on doing another video on ULTRAKILL, There are three specific songs I recommend that I think you'll have a blast with.
Sands Of Tide (4-2 GOD DAMN THE SUN)
Death Odyssey (5-3 SHIP OF FOOLS)
Altars Of Apostasy (6-1 CRY FOR THE WEEPER)
Also chord of crooked saints.
It said "GOD DAMN THE SUN"? I thought it's " THEGOD DAMN SUN"
18:12 this prison... TO HOLD ME
Ah, a visitor. (do the sisyphus dialogue!)
@@zoranradakovic2199 hm, indeed.
@yellowportal-cb7rr i have sleept long enough.
I recommend calamity music " one of many mods of Terraria " also has epic boss musics to biome musics.
Yup, you're not the first. The video is already being edited.
pandemonium's chorus never fails to get me hyped
Chaos & order are definitely another duo you will enjoy thanks for the awesome content i never knew i needed violin in my Ultrakill ost so hard
Seriously the part where you play over Tenebre Rosso Sangue is really worthy of a whole remix, I would love hearing it for the full song.
If you like Tenbre Rosso Sangue, I heavily implore you to check out more of Keygen Church's/Master Boot Record's music. I've been listening to them way before their work with Ultrakill and they do not disappoint.
So much knowledge. So much insight. Amazing video, keep it up! Can't get enough of Keygen Church
It's a great baroque-rock-style song.
i loved your analysis, very well done and i really like how you put fragments of the songs you talk about so it's easily understandable :)
This is the perfect music for camping.
Because it's so in-tents.
amazing notes and analysis as always
i suggest taking a look at the newest WIP hakita has posted these days on his channel
"The World Looks White/The World Looks Red"
its very interesting considering the rest of the soundtrack
