  • This video takes us up to Manchester, NH to join Tom of @PCsandEVs in his recently acquired 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV. Seeking to compare the two in terms of efficiency, highway range, and other more subjective factors, we hit the road to the New England sea coast for some tests at 75 mph.

    Thanks Steve. My lease is up in a few months so I have to decide which one I want next. I think the EV has an updated interior so the seats, etc. should be comparable to the 2022 EUV you used in this test.
    It would be nice to see how they compare with equivalent batteries.

      Yep, the 2022+ Bolt EV has much the same interior quality as the EUV based on our brief time in one; not premium but certainly a step up on our original Bolts. Once prices stabilize, I wouldn't hesitate to jump into one if we need a second car or, hypothetically as a primary car, if we didn't travel quite so far with the family.

    Forget that software limitation. I refuse to get the recall done until the real fix is in place. Especially since it's leased. Love my bolt!

      The right stance, imo. We wouldn't have got the limiting software if the Bolt was our only EV. Just hoping it flags something before our lease is up so I can cover the pack replacement on this channel... looking less and less likely by the day though!

    I've been getting estimated range of 277 mile on my 2022 BOLT EUV, SEEMS PRETTY ACCURATE using cruise control and regeneration braking. keeping it charged 100% using at home level 2 charger

      Is this at highway speeds with A/C on? Excellent performance, if so. Range and efficiency varies greatly depending on whether the drive is on local streets or faster state/interstate roads. 277 would put you at around 4.3 mi/kWh, which is excellent for high-speed driving and about standard for local roads.

    This is a combination of highway and city, I have been using cruise control set/ resume to alter my speed when necessary on highway or the regenerative breaking paddle with resume.Steve can you please do a video on if it is possible in an emergency to use a portable 10kw generator to level one charge my Bolt ?Thanks

      Thanks for the info. I'd have to assume a portable generator would work fine given the relatively low power draw of the L1 charge cord at 8A/120V, but it would be interesting to test different levels. Not sure when I'd be able to put all that hardware together in a good setting but it will go on the list, thank you!

    Nice test. If you got a final efficiency of 3.5 mi/kWh on your 2020 Bolt, then, if you started and finished at nearly the same altitude and wind effects were negligible, then that would suggest your average speed for the whole test was 66mph, based on the empirical formula from my 2021 Bolt test data (efficiency=8.42 - 0.0743v, where efficiency is in mi/kWh and v is velocity in mph). Does that sound reasonable?

      That would seem fair, yes. We cruised well at 75-77mph on NH-101 for long periods, but the turnarounds/midway break slowed us down and the final 15 miles or so was very much a crawl (a wise one, as it turns out!)

    Thanks for the video, and for presenting as much data as you did!
    Both cars have 66 kWh batteries, so if at the same charge percentage and traveling the same route, the car with more remaining range is more efficient. It's really simple when the variables are so minimal.
    In ICE vehicles, range is judged by mileage covered versus fuel burned. Manually dividing miles by gallons can be more accurate than trusting the onboard MPG display. It sounds like something similar happened here.
    I would say that the 3.4 vs 3.5 kWh figures are not as accurate as the final charge and range figures, which would make the EUV slightly more efficient. Much like the MPG display in many ICE vehicles can be inaccurate, the kWh display may be slight inaccurate in either (or both) of the Bolts.
    It sounds like you made your conclusion of the EV being more efficient based solely on the estimated average mi/kWh (again, 3.4 vs 3.5), while ignoring the other three points (same battery, more remaining range, and more battery percentage in favor of the EUV). Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like the EUV surprisingly took the win in actual efficiency, while the EV tricked you with how optimistic the mi/kWh display is.

      The efficiency metric could certainly be out of whack, but it would have been interesting to see how much energy each car used and where it went. There could be variations based on drag due to different designs, climate control efficiency, battery degradation, or a few other variables probably too minor to mention.
      The 2020/21 Bolts were supposed to have 66kWh, where as the EUV claims 65kWh, which is again minor but shows where variations in actual available capacity could come into play.
      Overall, the Bolt EUV is also rated for 247 miles by the EPA, while the 2020 Bolt EV is rated for 259 miles. That would put the EUV at 3.8 miles per kWh and the Bolt at 3.9 miles per kWh, at least in mixed testing, so it would seem to align with the difference we observed and perhaps indicate that the 2020's pack is slightly degraded, so fewer kWh are actually available for us, or that the BMS software implemented as part of the recall is being more conservative in estimating remaining range, presumably to avoid running the pack too low.

      Not quite the same batteries. The capacities for the 2020~2021 were officially listed as 66kWh, but the 2022~2023 officially list 65kWh in their spec. This slight difference could be due to a more advanced battery chemistry, allowing a notably lower weight while slightly reducing capacity to cut cost. Or they simply dropped 1kWh while making other efficiency improvements elsewhere in the design (there's a few powertrain differences discovered so far). Can't be 100% sure all the reasons, but there is definitely a difference in the batteries used.

    In addition to tests such as this it would be good to know other important information. 1- How much does these vehicles cost. Can the average family afford them or are EVs mostly for the top 10 percent earners. 2- How much range can one expect from a DC fast charger at a typical 20 to 30 minutes rest stop.

      Thanks for the comment. This video is aimed a bit more at the EV nerds who enjoy data points and direct comparisons between models. We're looking into creating more EV 101 content for newer buyers in the future.
      In the meantime, I can certainly answer your questions here:
      1) A new 2023 Bolt EUV starts at $27,200 MSRP, before any rebates and incentives. It's among the most affordable electric cars on the market, along with the US-made Volkswagen ID.4 when that arrives next year. The older Bolts had higher MSRP and the used car market is still in flux right now, so it's hard to pin down prices. I'd advise anyone buying a used EV to wait until next year, if possible, as supply is likely to improve and new incentives will be clarified by then.
      2) GM's stated target for the Bolt line is 100 miles in 30 minutes on a capable DC station. Fast charging is not the Bolt line's strong suit and competing EVs will charge at twice that speed or better. If journeys of 400+ miles are frequent and quick stops essential, buyers should look at other models or wait for GM to launch its Ultium range, which are capable of much faster charging speeds.

      Bolt EUV is totally affordable... My payment is $380... Saving about $460 a month currently versus driving my jeep. DC fast charge limited to 50kw... 30 minutes in Walmart last week was like 85 miles.. I would have to look at my Electrify America bill.

      @@jeremymichaels5959 Thanks for the addition! EA cost varies a lot based on whether you're in a per kWh or per minute priced state. Usually about half the cost in a per minute state, at current Pass+ member pricing.

      The extremely unaffordable EVs are only a few and even those can be had by wealthier middle class individuals. I see people in top trim trucks and wonder who decided they needed an almost 100k F-150

    Missing from your discussion in the video and comments here is the coefficient of drag of the EV & EUV. That is a figure GM has not been proud to brag about, since early Bolt designs, it was a high of 0.35, the redesigned EUV seems to have tried to streamline it a bit more. The 2020 Bolt had the older design, but the 2022 redesign probably is on par with the EUV. Even after that, I'd guess the slightly lower and narrower Bolt EV will have better wind efficiency. At highway speeds, wind is the MAJOR drag on power, and can be a multiplier the further one drives at those highway speeds. That is what's accounting for the mi/kwh differences, not weight, not extra features, not even SOC of the 2 batteries. With today's popular SUVs, people neglect basic physics. Take a look at the Aptera to see what a truly efficient EV looks like.

      Thanks for the additional insight, always very much appreciated. The Cd of our original Bolt (2017, same design as 2020 in all ways that matter for this) was reported to be 0.308. Is the 0.35 you're referring to from pre-production models?

    We max our highway speeds at 60 - 65 mph. I do hope that gets us moire efficiency. In your stats what does GOM mean? We currently have a 2010 Honda Fit. We have on order a 2023 Bolt EV 2LT as this is the closest to the Honda Fit as we can find.

      Sorry, jargon but a common one you'll come across in EV groups: GOM = Guess O Meter -- just a flippant name for the range estimate that an EV presents to its driver.
      The first test ride I shared in our 2017 Bolt EV five years ago was for a young couple replacing their Honda fit. They commented that it felt similar, albeit with a bit more space in the rear seats. Hope your new Bolt is all that and more!

      And yes, dropping the speed to 60-65mph will be a marked improvement. 230 miles or more should be quite achievable on a single charge at that speed, unless the heater is running hard or the elevation is significant.

      Rims are always intriguing, as they're such a simple change to make and any notable range gain would be worth the mod. Unlikely we'll do that with our lease almost up but I'd definitely consider if we owned it (or another Bolt) as a second car.

      @@plugandplayEV The Bolt EV comes standard with aluminum wheels. Can one reasonably expect anything lighter? I don't think that we'll ever see titanium wheels on a production vehicle - especially one as reasonably priced as a Bolt EV.

      @@jamescorrigan7999 There's a good video from Eric/News Coulomb somewhere out there covering why the forged aluminum of the Cruze Eco rims saves notable weight vs. the Bolt's stock aluminum wheels. It shaved something approaching 40 lbs off the weight of all four wheels, if I recall, without losing the rigidity.

    If you want to see the actual SOC % while driving rather than the word "low" (not useful info from the GOM) then you need to connect your Phone with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay and open up the MyChevrolet app.
    The app will show you your current % SOC and if you update your "Work Address" with the destination of your next stop then the app will calculate your estimated arrival % SOC - very useful. Both values will update while you drive.
    Note. The MyChevrolet (requires OnStar remote access - free for 5 years for the 2017 - 2020 models, after that it costs you about $15 per month. For the 2022+ it is only free for a short trail period)

      Thanks! I'd usually have Torque Pro hooked up throughout but left the dongle in the Ioniq 5 on this one. I've always found the in-car version of the MyChevy app terribly bug-laden, with frequent drops and buffering, but will give it another whirl.

      @@plugandplayEV OBDII in combination with some software is a great solution also. If one doesn't mind the extra cost and loves all the extra geeky data (I use that combo also) 👍
      But as your video pointed out - you have your phone with you all the time but maybe not your OBDII 😃

    Basically for me the EUV is $3k more for what I want, since the EV doesn't have cooled seats. But the EV can have the upgraded stereo without the panoramic moonroof. The EUV looks a little better though.

      I think the EUV size and shape fits the Bolt design better, for sure. And the additions like sunroof and Diet Supercruise will be attractive for some. Really glad to have it added to the line up.

    What in the world is killing your efficiency rating? 3.5m/kW? I usually get around 4.6m/kW during the summer and if I'm driving long distance at 75MPH, it may drop down to 4.2m/kW. That's crazy.

      Honestly, the best we've ever seen on either the 2017 or 2020 Bolt EV at sustained 75mph is 4 miles per kWh, with very light A/C, flat terrain, and no winds against us.. 3.5 is also pretty consistent with what the many UA-cam range tests around that speed suggest, pulling somewhere between 210-220 miles on a charge.
      Mods? Certain mode set up or tire pressure? Whatever you're doing, share it widely so we can all squeeze a bit more out of our Bolts!

      Your average seems way higher than I've ever heard of for 75mph. Do you live at high elevation? Perhaps light winds and smoother roads play a factor too?
