I really like your positivity in these videos. So many other EV guys claim their prefeed EV is the one-EV-to-rule-them-all and disparage other makes/models. You always find the good while being honest about areas for improvement. It's why I always return to your videos.

On my 2019 Bolt, regen reduces the number shown as energy used, so the 65.9kWh is what actually came out of the battery. Decently impressive range considering the speed you were driving,

Really glad to see the Chevrolet Bolt getting a little bit of positive praise. The car gets forgotten in the automotive press a lot.
And other than the somewhat uncomfortable seats, they really did a pretty damn good job on this vehicle.
The instrument cluster gives you good usable and useful information for an electric vehicle. The trending line can help you figure out if you're driving in a headwind and maybe don't know it. You'll see that trending line heading down towards the minimum and it can help you recalculate on a road trip if you need to stop sooner or if you can push it a little farther.
Definitely looking forward to future videos that you're going to do with this vehicle. And the Kona also.
What surprises me with the bolt is how nice the back seat is It's got great leg room for a relatively small vehicle.
Keep up the great work really enjoy your videos.

I agree - the Bolt was amazing when it came out. Is it still relevant today? I'd argue yes... Especially with discounts at dealers. Charging curve / peak rate is still brutally awful so I could never see my self road tripping this car but it's a fantastic commuter or I recommend them a lot for fleet use

@@OutofSpecMotoring I bought a 2020 because of the deep discounts. It put it well below a Model 3. I live in the the middle of the U.S. so my only choices are the Bolt, Leaf, and Tesla. The Hyundai and Kia's are CARB-state only vehicles and I don't want to have to deal with buying one over 1,000 miles away and having the same issue with service. In our case the Bolt is my daily commuter and I think it is the best value for an EV commuter. Long distance driving in it is not great. Range is fine, but the DCFC is at the bottom end at roughly 55kWh and as pretty much everyone knows, the seats start to get annoying after an hour of sitting in them. It is odd that the back seats are significantly more comfortable than the front seats. For a second car for commuting and as a "regional" vehicle it is the best value if GM and the dealers keep deep discounting them.

Yeah they got some seriously to good discounts Going on. Although I've seen the prices climb a bit. About a month ago I saw a brand new 2020 LT trim for $20,000. That would be a pretty difficult price to pass up. You're getting a hell of a lot of car for not much money.
I watch a lot of news Coulomb's video Also. He road trips pretty much continuously in his bolt.. and does not even have charging at home.
      He's tested the Niro also.
what he found on the long road trip was that essentially they ended up charging about the same amount of time. The Nero had a higher peak charge but also tapered a little differently and started a little bit later. So the difference in total time spent at the chargers was not really very significant.
The new 2020 bolt has a much better charging curve it doesn't fall off a cliff like the old one,
Still a pretty low peak rate, although it's the same rate as that new mini.. actual a little faster..
Definitely looking forward to more videos on the bolt..

I've thought of doing the same thing, buy the bolt for using around town, and keep my Prius for when I want to do a long road trip.
I've seen a lot of videos of people road tripping in a bolt.
The trick seems to be to run it down to a low state of charge, and run in that lower 60% of the battery pack on your road trips. The Bolt comes up to Peak charging pretty quickly even at a low state of charge, And with the 2020 model the taper curve is definitely more generous. And The bolt is pretty good about estimating the range left and behaving reasonably well when it gets to a very low state of charge. As out of spec motorings video showed it drove up into the very end of the battery long past the warning.
I don't understand how they designed the seats so badly.. They could have at least made the cushioning a little thicker.
Hope you guys have a wonderful day be safe out there..

Kyle, thanks for promoting the 70mph highway range test. In my opinion, the window sticker of all EVs should simply be highway range at 70mph at summer and winter temperatures.

    • @SWFan77
      @SWFan77 4 роки тому +2

Gas cars provide a highway/non-highway value on the sticker. I don't understand why they don't do the same with EV's. Basically the EV ranges given today are city driving only.

@@SWFan77 They give an average of both. So although the Bolt here is doing ~220 miles highway, it's capable of 300+ miles city. Add in winter vs. summer and you'd be looking at a spectrum of 180-300+ miles, which isn't much use to anyone.

Anything not highway will be by definition better, so no need to worry about it.

I think a simple 3x3 range grid with Summer, Winter, Perfect on one side and 35, 55, 75 on the other would be really nice. You could still have a single EPA range number that people could look to compare vehicles but this other detail would be really nice.

Love the review. I just got a Bolt and one thing you don't mention here, but which jumped out at me on my first road trip with the Bolt is how cruise control just straight up pegs the speed you set. I was used to gas cars where hills and curves could cause the cruise speed to move around a lot, but the Bolt was the exact speed almost the entire trip, dropping just 1 mph on the biggest curve hill combo. Maybe you mention this in your full review, or maybe you've just driven so many EVs that it no longer seems novel, but to me it was surprising.
I also love the regen braking paddle on the Bolt. It makes me comfortable moving my foot off the brake a bit to stretch out while running cruise control. I'd do this some with my old gas cars too, but it always left me nervous. The regen paddle doesn't brake quite as hard a truly slamming on the brakes, but if I can see a hundred yards ahead it'll be more than enough and the auto-braking feature may slam on the actual brakes if I did get too close (I haven't tested this and really don't want to, maybe some UA-cam review will do it though)?

Just an FYI, Taking the battery this low is not advised. As a contractor who worked on the Bolt with GM, we recommend using no more than 55 kW if you want to keep the car running for more than 8 years. If you drain the battery below that on a regular basis, you will not be able to get 8 years of life. This is also why the Charge rate is capped at 55 kW, so that the car can last at-least 8 years without any pack issues. The new management at GM has been very keen on reducing Warranty spend across the board to maximize their profits.
If you need to travel 250+ miles on the highway without charging regularly, the Lyriq is coming in 2023 and should be capable of much longer range and faster charging while providing the same 8 year lifespan. But, the price point will be more like the LR Model Y

Used to have a 2017 Premier, and I'm still very much a fan of this car. I traded it for a Tesla Model 3 SR+, and I'm in a KIA Niro EV now. With all the discounts, I'm tempted to go back to a 2020 Bolt EV. Despite the rain I think this is a legit range test. The rain hurts the test a little but cruising in the last few percent under 70 mph helps it a little and the two should offset each other. The Bolt EV does calculate the regen into the energy used. If you go down a long hill you'll see the energy used go backwards in 0.1 kHh increments. 2 kWh regen is way too high of an estimate though. I went down hill in my Model 3 from 5,000 feet to a couple hundred feet for 15 miles and that regened 2 kWh. A 70 mph range test at a relatievely flat route has only a few moments of regen. Even half a kWh is a high estimate for this test, so 66 kWh usable is pretty accurate in your test.

Confused on your road trip comment though, in light of trying to say the MINI Cooper SE would be okay for long journeys thanks to 50kW charging in 30 mins. @@OutofSpecMotoring The battery engineers have indicated it's a limitation with the car's wiring and they have no option to improve the rate beyond 55kW. That could just be GM making excuses, of course, but it's an aging design at this point and you have to feel they'd improve it if they could (as they/LG Chem have with the extra 6kWh).
They should definitely hold the 55kW max for longer though. Still, the original point stands: if you can road trip that adorable little MINI and stop every 100 miles, the Bolt EV stopping for a similar charge session every 200 miles is not an issue. The 2017-'19 model years will step down the charge rate more suddenly, from 55kW to ~40kW at the halfway point, ~25kW approaching 70 ( then unbearably slow after 80-85%!)

Because I'm a 2013 Tesla owner. And a quite pleased one no doubt. But my one "real world" range test since buying it was underwhelming.
My EPA rating is 265 miles ('13 S85 RWD), and on a cold day in late February, I got 200.
Yes, I know factors such as age of the battery, temperatures under 45°F, and the imperfections of typical human driving habits affected that test, but it was still a shock (pun intended?) when I got a mere 200 miles on a full charge that day.
I will retest in warmer weather. But I guess it's good to see that I'm not alone. Here's a brand new, generally highly regarded EV not made by Tesla, and it's also falling short of the EPA number.

In my 2017 Bolt, if I watch the "power consumed" on the energy usage screen and when it goes up by .1 from for example 10 kWh to 10.1 kWh, if I go into regen it goes back down to 10.0 kWh consumed. You can check to see if the 2020 does the same thing pretty easily on the track... just instantly hit the regen paddle right when the number goes up by .1 and see if it goes back down :)

The 2020 Bolt does the same thing. When regen'ing, the "energy used" figure on the display screen runs backwards. So, the 66 kw shown is indeed the "net" energy usage of the trip, (total consumption - total regen).
Just quickly hitting the regen paddle is probably not going to produce the full 0.1 kWh necessary to show up in the display, though. For that, you'll need to descend a fairly steep hill, with at least a few hundred feet of elevation loss. Also, if you begin the trip at the top of a hill, the "energy used" display will never run negative. If your regen exceeds your total consumption, "energy used" will just show up as zero.

@@eb1888. I agree, the Bolt needs 100 KW minimum with 150 KW preferable to future proof the charge rate but GM would need to change out the cabling for a lower gauge which is expensive. In 2017 55 KW was fine for the market it competes in but not for 2020/2021. The redesign is now scheduled for 2022 so we'll see if GM steps up to the plate or not.

They are coming of lease and im sure higher millage ones will hit 10-12k within the year. In many places. People blast past you 70 Mph and on road trips 80Mph is the defacto speed limit.

This test is supposed to be real world, but no one in the real world would drive super slow with 3 percent in battery to squeeze out another 10 miles to be counted in the range number. EV driver is not supposed to reach their destination with close to zero percent in battery. This 228 miles "real world range" number is exaggerated and not reflective of real world usage.

    • @Vxvx22

Out of Spec Motoring You should have said the real world range is 216 miles coz that's the distance u traveled when u exited the last highway ramp (the battery was very close to zero already when u exited). This is supposed to be a 70 mph highway test as u clearly stated multiple times, so u should not drive in 30 to 40 mph to squeeze out 12 more miles at the end. This practice is just not reflective of real world usage and it isn't at 70 mph energy consumption when u do the last 12 miles.
Also, your practice would create a lot of variation when comparing results between different EV. How would a normal person know that Bolt achieving 228 miles is really comparable to Hyundai Kona at let's say 200 miles in your test? 228 miles in Bolt in this case is exaggerated like I stated while Kona could be 200 miles truly at 70 mph all the way to the zero percent in battery. This kind of test is supposed to be a true apple to Apple comparison done in a scientific and real world way...so the results meet the exact criteria that u stated and the data are comparable to different car model.
Why am I so picky on this? Coz I do airplane performance testing and aerospace system testing for a living. If I setup test procedure like u do in video, the test results would be thrown out immediately and is considered unusable data. Intentionally create unnecessary variation in testing data is not accepted in engineering setting.
