I don't understand how this is such a huge departure from Your Cover's Blown or things like Electronic Renaissance on Tigermilk or even some of the more groove-based tracks on Dear Catastrophe Waitress-- it just sounds like Belle and Sebastian having fun to me. I'd also like to say that the new album is fantastic and a huge improvement on Write About Love... I find myself coming back to it over and over and enjoying it every time. You can tell they worked really hard on it, and all of them deserve a big round of applause. Love this single, love the whole album, love Belle and Sebastian!

You are spot on, there are plenty of forerunners to the songs on ''Girls etc" as you point out - I saw them 2 nights ago, and the new tracks, especially "Party Line'', were the highlights of the best B&S show I've ever seen, though perhaps the 30 punters invading the stage during T.B.W.T.A.S. was also pretty good. Live, the dance songs just kill it. Nile Rogers, eat your heart out!

“So you go and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home and you cry
      And you want to die“
Sorta like this, melancholy. From The Smiths, “How Soon Is Now”. Cheers.

People who are commenting about the fact this doesn't sound like Belle & Sebastian I implore you to listen to this with new ears, forgetting what the band sounded like previously. To completely disregard a song based on the songs before it is rather unfair on the song and the band. Music evolves, times change, bands change, unfortunately its part of life. Luckily music is infinitely available in many mediums so if you wish to listen to an older Belle & Sebastian album to get your fix, you may. This song is a truly fantastic song and if it were to come from a newer band that you maybe hadn't have heard of before I sure you'd like it. Don't disregard the song because of some stupid belief that a band should only ever have one sound. This song is fucking amazing and I think it still has a Belle & Sebastian feel, with a new twist. That is all. Peace out peeps.

    • @cgzepp

I think that what makes this song so good is the very fact that it sounds different, but you still have their it factor somewhere. They're fucking geniuses

I'm having a hard time with the fact that so many Belle and Sebastian fans are so close-minded. Last group of people I expected to have a hard time with the new sound.

    • @patchworkz7
      @patchworkz7 9 років тому +5

It's like people don't recall that "Electronic Renaissance" was on Tigermilk, or that through their career they're played with different styles from bluesy sounds to spoken word on the same album at times. Yes, the last couple of albums have been more professionally polished and produced, but you can still hear the core band there.
I may still wish for a professional recording of "Rhoda", but I'm not going to begrudge them where they want to take their sound.

    • @arthurvezin
      @arthurvezin 9 років тому +4

No need to be so prolix about some shoddy piece of music from Belle & Sebastian. It's not about the medium, but rather it's about the musical value that this particular piece of music carries. In contrast with the older Belle & Sebastian material this one severely lacks in originality and has only a paltry musical potency to it. End of.

I'm confused how people think this is uncharacteristic of Belle and Sebastian. Their music has always had a 70s-inspired folk-twee edge to it. How is this not a natural progression for their music? I think it's great and deliciously catchy!

    Lyrics
How did I get here? I heard a rumour
From your girlfriend's sister that you knew me
And you end up dancing closer to me
I know that I broke the rule already
She asked me if I'm single
    Going steady
I just drop my head and took a step off in to the dark
Standing on the black and white tiles
    Don't dance on the lights
'Cause the bears eat the pretty ones
We are like the islands, divided
Jump to the beat of the party line
Jump to the beat of the party line
    There is nobody here
    But your body, dear
Jump to the beat of the party line
    Stay
    You stay
I am on this morning quite distracted
The tug of war begins on our emotion
I am leaving many people feeling
    Worse than before
People like to drive their cars and smoke up
People like to sit inside and toke up
People like to shoot at things with borrowed guns and knives
I am happy to look and run
Where were you when I was king in this part of town?
Now the days of glory are gone
Jump to the beat of the party line
Jump to the beat of the party line
    There is nobody here
    But your body, dear
Jump to the beat of the party line
Jump to the beat of the party line
Jump to the beat of the party line
    There is nobody here
    But your body, dear
Nobody here but your body, dear
Jump to the beat of the party line
Jump to the beat of the party line
    There is nobody here
    But your body, dear
Jump to the beat of the party line
Jump to the beat of the party line

I don't understand what you mean. Of course literal, actual, and 100% real time machines are necessary. How else are you going to listen to music from the past? It's not like music is going to somehow travel through time on its own just to make things easy for you. Don't be stupid.
