  • Today we talk about Crockett and Jones, C&J as they say. This is a celebrated, long-standing shoe and boot brand that has been around for quite some time. Quality shoes... but also extremely expensive. The big question is, is it worth it?

Bought a $700 pair of C&J boots on a whim in London in about 2000. 23 years later they been around the world..hiked mountains and still shine up and could wear with a suite.

Please, do you wear them everyday or just occasionally? I am thinking of buying myself ones too, but often I read that shoes will last for a long time only if you rotate them with other pairs, but honestly I don't want to do it because buying 2 pairs with high price tag seems like too much for me.

@radekkubica6089 I wore often...on trips everyday. The leather has eventually cracked on top but they are still good.

@@radekkubica6089you will buy your first pair and inevitably get some more later. Coniston will start feeling too nice so you will get Moltons. Summer will get closer and Lanark in suede will be a reasonable purchase. After a while you are going to start thinking about color combinations. You now have the grain tan version so perhaps a dark brown calf would be needed... 😀

Gotta rotate leather shoes. At least one day off with shoe trees for every day on. Extends the lifetime

I got the Islay's about one year ago. Previously, the maximum price I had ever paid for a pair of shoes was only a third of these. But eventually, I absolutely love them, they're killer boots. The only thing is that although the are very strong shoes, you get anxious about any damage you may cause.

I'm a C&J fan and I think I have to agree with your assessment on every point especially how they seem to nail the style.

Been a fan of their boots for a while. The C&J Ross is my primary travel boot, and its a versatility machine! It is comfortable, capable, durable and stylish. What more could you wish for.
Took it hiking in the Caucasus, perfect tool for the job, got back to the hotel, buffed it off a bit, threw on a casual blazer and was good to go for a date and cocktails in Tbilisi.
Took it on business to Namibia. Inspected a building site in the morning and got away with wearing them to a navy suit for the afternoon project finance presentation. (Though the latter is pushing it a little, style wise)
I have taken this thing to a dozen countries and never wished for another shoe except maybe on the beach. It is just that versatile and good looking.
The thick, sturdy outdoor leather is extremely durable and provides lots of support, the sole takes on mountain trails and wet muddy hunting grounds for years without breaking a sweat. You can get it resoled of course, but honestly I don't see myself outlasting the sole any time soon.
The only downside is that the tough build and support really makes for a horrendous break it period. The first day I wore it I was 100% convinced I made a mistake. Took me about three weeks and lots of pain and blisters to bend this stylish monster into something wearable, but by now it is the most comfortable boot I own.
Honestly though, when talking about classical dress shoes, C&J is still superb quality, but you can get the same thing significantly cheaper from Carmina.

Any special tips for caring for the C&J hurricane hide? Can we care for the waterproof calf skin in the regular way, like conditioning, creaming, waxing, and mink oiling?

Crockett & Jones and Carmina, my two favourite brands, and I have tried many...once you find a last (or more lasts) that fits your feet perfectly, you´re settled...these shoes last a lifetime if you take care of them and taken that in consideration the price isn´t really high....and they look fantastic, they level up your entire appearance .....Unfortunately, I only discovered them when I was already 50....so I won't be able to enjoy them for a "real" lifetime 😂😂

Love C&J too bit they are getting pricy, happy I have managed to get myself a few pairs some years ago. The good thing is they're timeless and will last a lifetime.

I never tried CJ, but I can vouch for Alden quality. I've owned a pair of longwings and cap toe oxfords for 10 yrs each, and re-soled both of them so they can last another 10 years.

I am looking at a pair of Polo Ralph Lauren Prestbury shoes. I can't find much info on them but the iside of teh show says it's made in England and the lettering on the inside of the show seems hand written. How would I know these are made by C&J, if in fact they are? What are the tell tale signs?

I purchased all the shell cordovan variants from Brooks Brothers while they had them at a steep discount. Been a year or two, and still haven't worn them all lol.

Only pair I have is a lovely pair of Westfield half-brogue Oxfords, and they're fantastic, definitely looking to get a pair of loafers and some Islay boots soon.
Luckily for me I live in Buckinghamshire, and only about 35 minutes away from their factory in Northampton, so for me getting them repaired will be really easy, I was told if they're well taken care of C&J can usually repair them at least 3-4 times.

I live 45 mins from the factory, I get 50% off by buying from the little factory seconds store. The lady who works in quality control serves me each time. That is cooler than going to Jermyn Street.

Great video! I completely agree, my favourite shoe brand by far! I currently have eight pairs with plans to increase the collection too. The versatility of designs, lasts and leathers is what appeals to me too, along with the incredible quality. Where model are your longwing brogues? They look incredible! Thanks again for a great video! Subscribed.

Really not a big fan of derbys, get a nice pair of crockett and jones oxford toe caps/semi-brogues. Talking about shoes, best buy for me ever was a pair of R M Williams Chelsea Boots, 6 years on and still like new.

Agree with you 100%. Let's be honest, C&J are just marvellous in terms of price. Look at Church's now.
And yes, you should care for yours better. They could do with some cleaning.

Well Crockett & Joness are true...they produce classy gentleman shoes. That's it.
On the other hand, brands like santani sell crappy rubber flip flops for 250 € and other ugly sneakers....so, IMHO there are overpriced poser brands and true stylish brands.

You need to polish the edges of your soles, it makes the shoes look scruffy.

  • @jakobdieckmann

Are they worth it? Yes, I think so. C&J are a staple shoe brand. Are there better options out there price/quality wise? For sure. But you already explained why C&J appeals more to you than those brands. Fair play. I like the British look, but personally I prefer the Southern European look.

    • @hvn5408
      @hvn5408 2 роки тому +2

Super fair opinion. At the end of the day if a certain level of quality is met, it comes down to style and you have to want to wear them.

3:05 they are NOT stitched on! It is far more complicated than this. Stitched on or stitched down shoes a far more primitive than Goodyear welted shoes the only thing better than Goodyear is the Norwegian welt.

You should show the shoe more and not your face. You also didn’t talk about it right. Clearly showing off collection vs. giving value to ppl more.
