    Question of the Week: Favourite pattern for patterned plywood? Project ideas with transparent patterned plywood?

      0.74mm my favourite 😁

      They all look good to me. I imagine it's quite time consuming as well as being fiddly?
      Is the veneer flexible enough to make into a wavy shape or even arches (circles I would assume would be hard to make small because of the veneer flexibility)?

    I just now found you, but I'm already a fan of Michael Alm. You are now my hero as I also work in complicated epoxy pours. I'll give you a few hints.
    1. It appears that you sealed all of the faces of your wood, so that's key. Wood off-gasses and you'll find a lot of bubbles if you don't. Just be absolutely sure that it's sealed.
    2. I don't understand the difference between deep and shallow pour and this is why ... if you apply your epoxy in layers (even during the same pour) then you will get "deep pour". How to mitigate bubbles?
    3. Heat it. If you take the resin mix and put it in a Bae Marie at 125 degrees F (about 52 degrees C), the bubbles will all rise and you'll be left with a crystal clear epoxy.
    Of course, this will allow it to cure faster as well, but as long as you're pouring one layer after another, in this instance, say, half and half, then the first layer will be clear. It will set a tiny bit, and then you'll pour the second layer that's also clear. Degassing in a Bae Marie should only take about 10-15 minutes at MOST, depending on what resin you're using of course. Any bubbles that might get trapped between the first and second pour will be minimal and likely not seen once it's cut ... as long as you've sealed every square mm of wood that will be exposed to the epoxy.
    If you can see a bubble in one cut, then toss it because bubbles will be few and far between. Better to cut and pour extra lengths than to live with those few pieces that will have bubbles.
    That having been said, I'm going to try this.

      Hi April. Thanks so the detailed consideration. The difficulty is getting the large piece into a heated bath or pressure pot, so would have to work on smaller pieces. In another video (perhaps not this one) I did seal the surface of the wood first and then cast, but for some reasons the release of small gas bubbles simply "stuck" to the surface and wouldn't get to the surface without mechanical intervention. All the best. Ray

    Wow! Beautiful. Can't pick a favourite but I will say the hexagons come second, it would do my head in that they don't match in the middle, you did say that so please don't think I'm being rude x
    If I'm ever rich enough, I'd like to see them as shutters on a window x

    • @RayWhitbyCreations
      @RayWhitbyCreations  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Tina! I certainly don't think honest feedback is rude and I totally agree with you. When I saw the hexagon pattern I was really disappointed and only left it in the video because it was a concept and sometimes it's good to show people that I'm human. As for shutters, that would be incredible. I remember a story of a nano-etched wafer that appeared brighter on the facing side than the reverse that was lit (something to do with surface plasmons) and BMW or Mercedes wanted to buy it for the dashboard to light up when the car started. But the concept was in its infancy and each dashboard made from this material would have cost more than the car itself! So I may have to leave the really big projects to others who are able to fund them! But will try a few smaller applications. All the best. Ray

  • @Zirnike

    You could take those 3d printed spacers, use some silicone molding stuff, and use that to make the spacers out of resin. That would hide them pretty effectively to get more out of the board.
    Of course, that depends on how good the edges come out doing this.

    • @RayWhitbyCreations
      @RayWhitbyCreations  2 роки тому +1

      Hi. I did use perspex (polyMMA) but it was prone to delamination when handled too much. I costed making a table from one of these patterns but the resin alone would be £500/$700, which is fine if I knew I could sell it. Hoping that someone would give it a go! All the best. Ray

      @onhandart 2 роки тому +1

      @@RayWhitbyCreations Thanks for letting me know about the delamination issue. I was thinking about trying your example, but thought it would be faster than resin...because I'm lazy. I think people would pay for a $5000+ table that looked that beautiful. As for customers, I know the difficulties, which thankfully have been few. The next video is an application of the transparent patterned plywood for a woodturning. I think this is brilliant. But... if it were ME, I'd consider myself dying to go for a parallax effect: for instance: say you make some captive sliding doors, in a sideboard, or buffet. For the sake of ease of visualization, let's call them shaker style, with the floating panel made of your Transparent Patterned Plywood ("TPP"), in a bypass configuration with the body of the piece (so their sliding groove draws them along the outside of the piece).
    Next inset a couple inch "bar"/"strip"/"inlay" (and having just thought that aloud, the intarsia potential for this stuff is HUGE, though you'd want a Hammond Glider to manage the cutwork) - think a thick "racing stripe" - running the lateral length of the piece parallel to the line of the doors' travel (and situated behind the doors path).
    Finally, set some momentary switches in the track, such that the interior of the piece gets illuminated when the doors begin to open. It'd be like looking out a train window at it passes along a covered bridge: the illumination greater than if the window was absent, and flickering and interrupted as the support pillars flashed by.
    Anyway, my 2¢. And worth every dollar, no doubt.

    • @MelkeinMaalla
      @MelkeinMaalla Рік тому

      Your narrator voice is the best and also the part in the beginning was geeky nerdy engineering jokes which many of us like minded enjoy a lot. Many US-based channels use superlatives in everything and everything is always so fun and easy, and also many channels compete in producing the craziest projects like making mosaics out of thousands of crayons, so in that context I liked the humour. Made me think of some retro spaceship tv series intro too.. or Star Wars (...? ...I am not into those).
      To the author of this comment I would say stop being so dramatic, this is internet, not a club, so you can just move on to content you like without a public declaration.
      I would love to try a fishbone pattern, I think it is more forgiving in terms of alignment. This type of plywood would be great in windows where you want to see through a bit but not fuly, like in a door. You would like to see who's knocking but not them to see inside. Or a toilet window. I think mixed material plywood or something like that would be a good term but in essence plywood refers to multiple thin layers of wood and you have them although there is resin in between. A ply in yarn is a thin strand (first spun) and plying is re-spinning multiple strands to the opposite direction.
