A color shrouded in mystery - Mystichrome. Only 1,010 Terminator Cobra models were produced with this incredible color changing paint code. Other than the limited production run, what makes Mystichome so tough to get your hands on? Believe it or not for years you needed somebody to oversee the painting process due to the toners used in this paint could be used for questionable reasons. Not only that, it might possibly be the most expensive paint code in the world. Being the rarest Ford paint to spray doesn't come cheap.

One of my favorite colors ever. Neighbor used to have an SN95 mystic chrome Cobra, I remember the ordeal he went through when he had to get it re-painted.

I worked as a tech rep.for BASF for a number of years and have sprayed this color many times.BASF worked exclusively with Ford on this color and was the only manufacturer of it( that may be different today).Prizmatic pigments were a relatively new tech in automotive paint at the time. Most shops were afraid to spray it,so they would ask me to do it .It's actually very easy to spray and you don't need to blend it because of the color changing properties there's no way for it not to match. It covers very well and I would always get more than I needed. To this day I still have about a sprayable gallon somewhere in my garage....
I want my GT this color,but it’s very hard to find ..my gt alredy have a color where it looks purple at a angle then look blue idk what color it could be

I had a buddy with a soft top cobra in mystichrome, he showed me his “touch up” paint aka a nail polish bottle full, cost him around $400CAD like 7 or 8 years ago, I nearly choked when he told me

You could have got a Thunderbird or Windstar I'm mistic chrome or mystichrome. The mistic chrome was more purple colored, the misti chrome was more blueish.
make a different colorshift with the same base color and call it thunderchrome and put it on a lightning. thats some money to be made.
My dad had a 96 mystic when I was a kid. I'll never forget the color shifting in the morning when the garage door went up. Loved it

Anyone can buy this color. It's not rare, it's not limited, it was never required to go through SVT to get it with a VIN. That was a totally different color.

Another forbidden paint color but it's from Honda is Phoenix yellow if I recall. I keep hearing it's radioactive suprisingly and cursed lol.

Lmao!! I started this video saying to myself “if it’s anything but Mystichrome they’re lying fuckers”. Easily one of the sexiest paints ever produced, and for anyone else who’s seen it in person it is beyond stunning. Serious pain in the dink to spray nicely, but well worth the effort 👍🏼👍🏼

Amazing! The original and first owner of my Brabus Roadster coupé had it resprayed from new with chameleon flip paint blended into a metallic flip to the rear. That was very unique and looked great but bloody expensive in 2004!
This was cool to watch. I’m a painter and I used to spray envirobase at my last shop. Now I’m spraying Axalta. Enviro is a superior product

There’s a lady in the town where one of my offices are, who has been daily driving her mystic cobra since 03/04. Last time I chatted, which was a few years back it had nearly 200k miles.
She needs to be interviewed by someone!
Our B series Falcons here in Australia came out with a colour very similar to that called Fantasy purple. Pretty rare colour, when polished and ceramic coated it’s absolutely amazing.
Good job, much respect for giving credit where it's due! 2 painter's working together without Ego&Hate. That's awesome to see. Your paint job is only as good as the prep work no matter who sprays it! Moral of the story...??? "Don't Hate/Cooperate" 2 or more people's skills are better than one if you're willing to let go of the Ego&Hate. Cooperation is a big deal in today's world if you want to actually be Successful in life.

Dude the episodes where you're in the paint booth are some of my favorites. Loved this.
Also, say what you will about Ford, but their colors are sick. I love Tuxedo Black and I'm so happy Smurf has some touches of it. Grabber Blue and Kona Blue are beautiful. The Ruby Red is incredible, as is Triple Yellow. I always liked Guard Metallic. It's simultaneously gray and green depending on the angle. Oh and Molten Orange is incredible, too! There are so many more, Ford does great with their colors.
Watching a skilled painter work never ceases to amaze me, they are like magicians.

I remember back in the early to mid 90`s there was a paint called chameleon that did the same thing and you could buy it off the shelf, cost $ 1000.00 AUS for a 4 LTR tin plus all the other stuff to go with. They used prisms in the paint to get the effect of light refraction, changing the colour.
I saw a Porsche Carrera GT painted with chameleon paint in Monaco years ago. Had a decent Sony camera but couldn't get a good picture of it. Then I noticed other people taking pictures looking at their cameras and shaking their heads LoL tough color to picture I guess. Looked crazy cool though.
It was /is mica chips in the paint. Chromallusion, Chameleon , etc I believe we’re all formulated using this.
They still make flip flop colors - a ton of them. You can still have it done today.
Never really cared for the color untill recently seeing builds with more modern aftermarket accessories added but, this is crazy! That color is so complex! Makes you think how they developed it in the first place
I’m in ATL and need a paint job. This video sold me on Chris/SSR, sad to hear the end it likely wouldn’t be him who does the work 😔. Will still have to check them out, every job David has featured from there has been incredible

I'd be willing to bet that his guy is every bit as good as he is, if he trusts him to do all of the work.
There was a guy who went around buying 1$ and 5$ chips from casinos and would repaint them by hand, used airbrushes and did all the special effects to turn them into bigger amount and cash them in. I definitely can believe him when he says that the paint could of been used to make counterfeit cash.

I've always loved this color ever since I first got into cars when I was little. I was a Mustang guy first, then I got into JDM stuff. Mystichrome is like an American Midnight Purple 2 (or 3? It's kinda like a combo of both IMO).

That's crazy, you can totally see the absolutely minuscule amount of yellow he put in when he shines the light on the paint in the dark.
I remember reading a pamphlet when I had to spend time at my mom's work when I was in high school about PPG Transitions paint which was remarkably similar to Mystic and Mystichrome. I loved it. I've wanted something painted in a Transitions color pair ever since but considering it would cost more than any vehicle I've ever owned just to paint a motorcycle gas tank... it hasn't happened.
That color shift really hits the whole spectrum. Seeing that yellow-green is wild versus how deep blue/purple it appears in most common lighting

I honestly thought this would be like a 95 Ford escort GT in that gorgeous pink color. Back in the day those cars would get totaled out for any paint damage because none of the shops around here would paint them.
Saw an SVT cobra this color once. My boyfriend at the time was a Ford guy and was so hype.
My wife's company car was a Ford Thunderbird had a similar mystic paint job. I always thought that's an odd color for a company car but it was cool.
I really like color shift paints, and this is for sure one of those all time great colors regardless of that bias of mine.
I think it would look good on a lot of sporty cars. :D

When using very small amounts of a toner you do not want to use a wooden stir stick. It can absorb some of the color.
So I looked into this a little deeper & it was the ‘96 Mystic color that had a connection to the $20 bill. Apparently you can only obtain it through a paint shop with your vin. Really cool piece of history. These videos are always so great, Thank you!

Audience, Glad I have an 04 Mystichrome Cobra, a 93 Red Foxbody, and a 2011 Black GT500. My mustang garage space is tapped out. I'll be having an extra 2 car garage built to store my Jeep and 79 VW Super Beetle convertible. The guy did an awesome paint job on your car. Kudos!!!
Nice job had no idea that color exsited! Which could you do a video about making a custom paint code like the TDIB color? Or even something not done before? Like I have a color that I use in my Pixel art for my character and is my favoite color a very blue but still dark blue. That I want to paint the unpainted brake calipers on my mustang one day as car body is rapid/luicide red and it fits the cars idenity. Just wanted to know if brand new car paint codes are a thing or is is like mixed colors or what ever thanks!

We painted this at the shop I worked at. I remember we couldn't even pull the code up with our envirobase system. Ford had to bring it out and they took back the material that was left. Stuff was crazy. Even the ppg Chameleon I have is a 100 bucks a oz. Absurd if u ask me haha

Are you telling me you can panel paint that hood and have no matching issues with out having to blend fenders? If that’s the case the paint work has come along ways since I spent years painting in a body shop. I can’t wait to see how this turns out.

Back in the day when color shift paint was relatively new......a lot of us referred to it as "Chameleon Paint"
Did an amazing job and it looks great, I just have a question about if OSHA rules for paint shops are different? I ask because when I was in Kansas working in a paint shop, we had a surprise visit from them and I got a $5000 fine for not wearing the respirator properly, they said my beard didn't allow a proper seal of the respirator and that's why I got fined along with the shop. Again I'm just curious if things are different based on what state you are in, not trying to cause any issues for anyone. This was also back in 2008 when I had my fine from this.

When it goes on it looks like vintage Ford Washington Blue, which I actually like better than the final look of mistachrome.
Dude makes laying down complicated color shift pearls look easy. They're anything but. TVR used to have some really cool color shift and hyper shift paints that you could buy your cars in. My favorite was a hyper shift white pearl.
Some ford windstar's were painted this color too. Camera does it no justice, so much better in person.
The first 99 Mustang convertible I saw on the street was that color. I remember it was memorial day weekend 1998 because we were still in high school and me and a few friends rented a place in wildwood right off the boardwalk. It was a crazy weekend...
The other thing this reminds me of is holding a 16 oz jar of abalone pearl... Epic! I'm not a painter btw just been around a lot of awesome stuff 👍
Back in 2002 I worked for a ford dealer and our lot jockey decided to scrape the side of a mystic chrome Cobra against the showroom door, bumper, fender, mirror, drivers door, and quarter panel all scraped up. Since the car had a whopping 10 miles on it, the service manager wanted to spray the whole car, but Ford would only allow us enough pigment and toner to repaint the specific panels. The body shop guy was very nervous because the amount of pain he can mix up was barely enough to cover all those panels, like you said we had to send back the unused paint to Ford. I don’t remember if there was a Ford rep there I just know our pink guy was very very nervous because I think the 2 quarts of paint or so that he mixed up with somewhere around the $1500 range.
This job is total quality. It’s definitely a shame that the viewers aren’t matching up to the likes because this type of work isn’t easy!!!
Having worked in body and custom shops, It’s not too terribly difficult to do.
@@lordsilvis1048 maybe not for those of us who has decade’s of experience but those who are just starting out and the one’s that are interested in having it done to their vehicles it might be intimidating.
