    No, I agree with you! In my opinion, it's too much going on. I think winged eyeliner looks so good when it's the sole focal point of the eyelook.

      alirpa77 Winged liner should be the main focus. That is why it looks good bc the eye w eyeshadow is quite simple. Putting all that eyeshadow around the eye and then a winged liner is too much imo

      Idk if I'd use the word simple.. I think Wayne is capable of extremely complex and intricate looks as well, but he's more sophisticated in his technique and realistic in his application. But you are absolutely right, he is so refreshing to watch, especially when the beauty space on UA-cam is filled with people who wear 3 layers of foundation, 4 layers of concealer, 2 powders, and eyeliner that points to the heavens LOL

      Kristan L So true! the way I see it Wayne likes ( and knows really well) to accentuate the beauty of the person wearing the makeup while most yt only concentrate on trying/adapting makeup trends and looks.
      That's why I like Wayne's vids above everything else makeup related on yt, you can tell he is an actual professional :)

    Completely agree with you. Wing liner with shadow messes with the organic flow of the makeup look. I've always felt the sharp black line doesn't make sense with a nicely blended shadow look, it doesn't look modern or cool. Worn alone or with a simple brown shadow to define the socket however,as you said, looks great 👍🏻 spot on!

    I think Wayne feels this way because he's more "classically" trained in makeup, in the sense he loves makeup because it enhances the face but makeup nowadays is meant to transform the face (in some cases into something its not). I used to think his preferences are too natural but after the contour trend exploded on instagram and the winged eyeliner WITH lots of eye shadow turned into an "everyday natural" look I see what he sees! It's absolutely unneccessary and ruins the fragile art of makeup which is to enhance. Winged eyeliner is a strong look and looks better on bare lids.

    • @juliajoaquin3406
      @juliajoaquin3406 7 років тому +11

      Sumaya you do realize that he isn't a certified MUA, right? He has no background on training nor does he has an online portfolio.. his private "clientele" does not exist.

    • @evergreenhigh1493
      @evergreenhigh1493 7 років тому +27

      Does being certified MUA really matter? I say i doesn't at all. Some of the biggest celebrity makeup artists aren't certified. Anyone can get a certificate even people who really shouldn't be getting one.

    • @CorpsexBridex
      @CorpsexBridex 7 років тому +12

      Sumaya you're exactly right that makeup is an art form, which of course means there's no wrong way to do it and it isn't being "ruined" by different types of application. That's like saying that Da Vinci did art "the right way" and people like Renoir, Lichtenstein, Pollock etc ruined it. There's millions of ways to wear makeup, it's not just to enhance but to express yourself. Natural makeup is beautiful, instagram makeup is beautiful, editorial style makeup is beautiful, Drag makeup is beautiful. We shouldn't bash each other over how we choose to paint our faces 💁🏻

  • @McInHeather

    I feel like it's become the norm nowadays and so people feel because all these instagrammers spend hours on their makeup for one photo when in reality, most of us don't wing the eyeliner because 1) it takes up a lot of time and 2) it can easily go wrong!
    Plus I agree with you Wayne, winged liner can ruin a look but because it's now a norm, people think it's the only way to do eyeliner!

    • @McInHeather
      @McInHeather 7 років тому +11

      and on this note: extreme, thick winged eyeliner on hooded eyes = no no. just closes up the eyes so much and it's better to tight line :)

      Angelina Pretty much what most youtube "beauty gurus" do. & huge on Instagram! It's doing your eyeshadow perfectly then drawing along your upper lash line, creating the wing at the end. Essentially you're going over the eyeshadow effect you've created.

    I love winged eyeliner... but not the GIANT wings that Guru's do today... they look like they are gonna fly away... I like winged liner that's a good medium, nothing dramatic. And i actually love a winged eyeliner with any eye look, including eyeshadow

      Jedi KMA well, some people HAVE to do a giant wing because of their eye shape. I have extremely hooded eyes that extend waaay past the corners of my eyes into my cheeks almost. In order for them to be seen, I need to make it thick and sharply angled.

  • @KatieWrightt
    @KatieWrightt 7 років тому +61

    I agree! Sometimes the eyeshadow looks so soft and blended that throwing a thick dark line through it ruins it. I definitely think that technique and shadow shape can make up for not using winged liner. Ps I think the peach/warm palette trend made this even worse. So many nice warm eye looks but with uncalled for liner and lashes that completely cover the eye shadow.

    Nope. Winged eyeliner is life for me. I proudly wear a thick black wing every day, with neutral shadows or bold if I choose! And it does work on hooded eyelids, you just gotta find what works for you! A thick pulled out cat eye isn't for everyone but winged eyeliner can be subtle and beautiful as well. I couldn't live without my liquid liner 👌🏽

    Despite the mixed reactions, I really enjoy these videos to get an artist's perspective on different looks. Sometimes I find myself trying to do too many tricks in one look and wonder why I look like I got punched in the face. Now I can see like "ohhhhh, I'm trying to fit a triangle in a circle( you know those toys for kids?)." Just like art where there are different types of techniques like impressionism, pop art, cubism, etc., the more you understand the fundamentals about different looks or techniques, the more power you have to create your own style. I love learning about the actual thought process behind the application rather than trying to blindly imitate influencers and instagram models. Thank you Wayne for your insight!

Bisecting a circle with a line can be quite attractive if done precisely. It's the smudged liner with wing added that makes no sense to me.
    BTW, you know I love you. It's funny how watching someone on UA-cam for an extended time you begin to feel like you know them. You have certain little facial mannerisms that are so charming. Even though I'm older than you, I feel like a little sister. It's a nice feeling❣💋

I would rather create a softer cat eye effect with shadow and, if I'm feeling dramatic, false lashes. I think what gets me most "riled" up is seeing all these makeup looks with winged liner and false lashes when it's not something we should all be striving for on an everyday basis....atleast not in my mind.

    I've started using a method from Linda Hallberg, taking a small bit of an eyeliner pencil, and gently smudging that out with an angled brush. It's way less intense, very subtle and way easier. Regular winged liner I strongly dislike, it makes the eye look way smaller and if it isn't PERFECT it looks tacky.

    I love it personally. I actually hate how I look with makeup if I don't have my super winged liner! It really just opens and elongates my eyes which I love without it my eyes look very small

    YES! This makes so much sense to me because 9 out of 10 times if I've worked really hard on my eyeshadow I don't want to mess it up with a wing! I love when the eyeshadow is light and the wing is the statement of the look, or when the eyeshadow is the statement and the liner is simply for definition's sake. Of course there's exceptions--wings can look stunning with bold looks too--but this video sums up why I always seem to struggle making a wing look right with strong eyeshadow looks. Thanks for putting it into words!

    what do you think about makeup without doing a lot to eyebrows? I wear light foundation, setting powder, blush, mascara, a darkish lip stain, and occasionally eyeliner. but I don't do much to my brows. I darken them a bit and fill in any patches. I like the shape, and I don't like the overdone Instagram eyebrow look. but I hear so much about how terrible it looks when girls don't fill, contour, make their eyebrows perfect.

      Rose Lee check out his videos on the perfect eyebrow. He said in one of them he's not (or wasn't at the time) a fan of over-groomed eyebrows.

      Me too. I often wonder if I should do more with my eyebrows. I still leave them natural all the time. Maybe I'm doing it wrong!

      I personally think that's okay as long as everything is equal by that I mean the lips can't be fully done with a dark colour with nothing on the eyes, but I think you can get away with a lot of eye makeup and subtle lips. So basically what your doing is what I would do anyway but do whatever you want! If u end up regretting it, it's okay u will learn

      For a full glam look, those with patches or really fair hair- well groomed eyebrows are essential. For the average person with minimal makeup? You're fine. 😊

    you literally have made my day. I have always hated liner on myself for the same reason. But people always told me I couldn't be a pro artist without knowing how to do it. Melly Patrice is another artist i love who does amazing makeup without liner. I personally think it creates a fresher eye look.

    You can avoid that problem by mapping out the liner first, that way it doesn't "cut" through your colored shadow. That's a pet peeve for me too, but it can be avoided if you know how.

      when I used to do eyeliner, my friend showed me the scotch tape trick. I only applied the liner, however my friend would first define the line with a black shadow, then apply all the other shadows she has in mind and then she would draw on the eyeliner... I think in this order. Worked like a charm!

    I'm glad you brought this up. It seems that lately we are taught that our makeup looks are incomplete unless we do a winged eyeliner. And while I do appreciate a winged eyeliner and love many looks that include it, I think we (UA-cam gurus) need to focus on the beauty of a beautiful eyeshadow look WITHOUT a winged liner. Thanks for making this Wayne!

    I feel naked without my bold winged eyeliner. I'll usually go for a nude eye with maybe a dark brown at the outer edge.. but as a closet goth girl (I'm a mum so I can't be going around with serious goth make up 24/7) I love a good dark eye and my eyeliner too when I'm feeling like heavy make up. however my eyeliner usually lines up perfectly with my shadow. maybe it's my eye shape that affects that?

    Completely agree. It's like creating a lovely piece of art and slashing through it with a sharpie marker. Cosmetics are to enhance, not deform. But, to each their own, yes?
