My husband just had a total hip replacement yesterday. He was bone on bone, walked with a cane, then moved to a walker with uncontrolled pain. He walked out of the hospital with a walker and 6 hrs later walks totally unassisted and pain controlled with Tylenol...a total miracle.
I have a friend who was without a walker from the get-go also. I don’t know how!? I was so unsteady the first couple weeks that my husband insisted I played it safe with the walker. Glad your husband is doing great!
Can I ask how old your husband was at time of surgery. Dr wants to do hip replacement on me I'm terrified. I'm 62 and I have bone on bone. Osteoarthritis, torn acl and meniscus in both knees. I have so much pain in moving my n right leg. Hip injection has helped for a couple months. But...I just had foot surgery 6weeks ago and have been no weight bearing so had to depend on my right leg. I'm so frustrated with this foot surgery because I've lost my independence and I'm very depressed. So anything you might know please tell me. I'm not wanting the surgery but if my pain doesn't get better that's what will happen
@@carolynbrowning6194 not sure how old @Marshaferguson3636 husband was? But his recovery sounds amazing! Everyone is so different. But the long-term benefit should make life better. Sending you 🙏🏼 Lmk how it goes.
Thanks for this. I am 4 weeks out from total knee replacement. Looks like either surgery is HARD. My doctor emphasized that full recovery is 12 months and it looks like a similar path for hip replacement. I can see I have made a lot of progress so far, but there is more to go. I remind myself “I can do hard things”.
Excellent video. I am now 22 days post op anterior hip replacement. Same day return home from surgery center. Do not rush recovery. Hips heal without much pt. Walk as tolerated, elevate and ice. I slept in a recliner for the first week, then moved to my bed sleeping on my back. Narcotic pain meds for first three days and then Tylenol and Celebrex.. I am now walking without aids and no limp but careful not to push too fast. My age is 78 and this is my second hip replacement. The surgery is major and the body needs time to recover so be patient.
I had 5 years walking on a label tear and arthritis. No one understood why the recovery was prolonged and slow and painful. Like yourself I had so much damage from walking on it 5 years it simply took that long. Glad you're getting there.
Yes, that's my theory about why I seem to have "chronic" tendon issues even though my new joint seems to be doing OK! Hope to post a 5 year followo up video soon. Take care.
I’m on day 4 post op. Just went down the driveway and back with a cane. Some burning in the thigh at first, but it goes away in a minute. I think I need to slow down a bit, but I feel good.
I can’t express how grateful I am for you and this video! I’m 8 days post-op, left anterior hip replacement. All over UA-cam I kept seeing these stories of super-fast recoveries from anterior hip replacement. I was expecting to be off the walker in less than a week. I wasn’t expecting the thigh pain, the stiffness, and all the rest. I am so grateful to see your slow, steady progress. ❤
I’m so glad my experience helped you. I was also so shocked at how difficult my first 10 days were! Even now, 2-3 years later, I don’t have complete strength and flexibility in that hip, but I’m pain free and can walk without a limp! I’m sure if I did more consistent PT longer, I would be stronger -although my surgeon said that hip may never be 100% like the other. I can live with that!!
Really makes me mad when people say ohhh I was pain free 2 months later I say bullshit. I had to wear diapers 2wks after surgery I live alone couldn't get out of bed in time to pee was terrible
Thank you so much. I read where one guy went home a day after the op THR living on his own. WENT BACK TO WORK THE FOLLOWING WEEK AND WAS DRIVING . Whaaaaat ! 😭
I'm two days post-op. This hip replacement class sounds so cool. I wish we had it as well. It's also interesting how you are allowed to go home the same day?! I was admitted one day before, couldn't eat or drink the day of surgery, they also keep us at the hospital for another 5 days for check ups and physical therapy. (Hungary, Europe)
Congrats on your new hip! That's awesome they keep you in the hospital. I think they send us home WAY too soon here in USA for "standard" surgeries. After a baby, you go home the next day in many cases. Way too soon, in my opinion! Wishing you the best recovery!
Thank you for sharing ❤ I’m a 72 year old woman who just found out I’ll eventually need a hip replacement due to arthritis. I’m scared out of my mind! Your video really helped. I’m doing my homework and watching as many recovery videos that I can. I’m single and probably will go into a medical rehab for as many days that I can and get a caregiver for when I get home, plus meals on wheels. Take care, you look great.
Glad my video helped. Yes, get all the help in the beginning that you can. Lots of people do it on their own, but having support and meals removes much of the stress! Wishing you the best in your future procedures. 🙏🏼
Don't be scared. I'm the one above who had so much trouble with my replacement, but I would definitely do it again on my other hip if I have to. I am also alone. There are so many services where I live, and I bet where you live also. Going to a rehab facility will be great. You'll get all your physical therapy, and you will be treated like a queen -- no laundry, cooking, cleaning, vacuuming! What could be better! Just try your best, and don't be scared. I'll be with you in spirit.
Hi Linda! Make sure a Rehab is available for you. From the day one my doc and everyone else were discouraging me saying that it is not easy to get rehab... I had some complications and they kept me 4 days in the hospital. The next morning when I asked how to get my leg up to my bed as I live alone, no one even tried to answer that question. I invented a method that is unique as I could not do it the first night at home... it was really scary. There was no mercy for me living in a big city and having my suegry in a busy hospital. Good luck!
@@interactive9025 I got a Caregiver who is going to stay with me for a week overnight, I’ve had her for three months already going over my APARTMENT and getting it ready, Things are coming along ❤️ Sorry you had that experience. Thank you for the advice.
WoW... watching this video was like I felt every moment of it. I Just had hip surgery due to me, passing out at work and broke my hip and my back. I am two months out. Thanks for letting me know what I am to look forward too.
I gotta say though the hardest part is a week or two after the surgery. It was the most difficult and painful part of the process and it is very important to have someone there to help you because you can’t do it alone. I constantly moved around with Walker to prevent blood clots. Oh yeah, taking a shower is going to be a challenge and make sure to get the sock puller upper.😊
For me, it is just the first round... I need to do the other hip replacement and wandering how much time it will take to forget the pain and all the incoveniences (for example, it was driving me crazy when I walked with a walker not being able to carry anything from one room to another).
@@interactive9025 , I think I was driving myself after 3 and half weeks but I was in a little pain I think. From what I remember the first 3 weeks was the hardest for me.
@@interactive9025 The suggestions are to use a backpack, put a lot of items such as water, cell phone, and so on where you’re going to sit, and by your bed, or all over your home, if you have to. Have a stool in your kitchen, and kitchen table.
This is one of the best videos I’ve seen for post hip surgery. This helps to see your progress and your pain rather than just hear testimonials. Thank you
I can tell how blessed you are having a supportive family. My biggest fear is going through this alone. Have had pain for years and not looking forward to this.
Yes, having help was a big bonus! If you can get a friend or neighbor to help for at least a few hours for a few days, it would be very reassuring for you. Sending 🙏🏼.
That's how I feel now. All medical roads are leading to a left hip replacement for me. I'm independent but it would be nice to have someone by my side whenever I'm scheduled for this operation and a few days afterwards. I will pray to God for his help and peace. Ultimately, I feel positive.
I'm a 71 year old widow who had a replacement last October and can't tell today. No nurse, aide, or anything besides a 2 day visit from my daughter. She was shocked my independence.
A small tip for people who are having trouble getting in and out of bed and have a hard time using the leg lift strap- I sat at the end of my bed and scooted backwards, using my arms and non-surgical leg to propel myself in small scoots, backwards, into my bed. Then as I scooted back, the bed itself lifted up my surgical leg for me. It was a lifesaver when my caretakers were not present to help put the lifting strap on my foot❤ I figured out how to do it, out of necessity, after my labral repair surgery. And then 13 years later, I practiced doing it before my total hip replacement, to make sure that my shoulders and arms were strong and stable enough to help propel my body backwards onto the bed again. If you are currently pre-surgery, you may want to practice this technique, just in case.
I have a high bed. I haven't had hip surgery yet, neither is it scheduled. But my hip has taken a turn .... to pain. Dr said my xrays show that I'm there, but only when I can't live with pain. I have a step stool and hopefully before I get surgery, I will practice getting into the bed, or actually, I might use a spare bedroom with lower bed. But that was a good suggestion altho my main bed has a footboard. Thanks to all discussing their experiences. I am currently dieting as I really need to loose weight before this ever happens.
@@cruisingal2 If you love your bed, consider removing the footboard before surgery♥️ If your hip gets worse and you cannot tolerate traditional exercise as well, I suggest water physical therapy (or classes if you are near any), especially in a heated pool. It helps keep you moving and active, while taking the strain off your joints. I did it when I broke my other leg, while waiting for my hip replacement surgery. It was so helpful. And good luck with your healing. I hope you find relief soon♥️
My journey through recovery was very similar to yours. The most joy I experienced was when I was again able to rollover and sleep on the operative hip side. It was like a great burden had been lifted - and it improved sleep.
Oh - being able to roll over and sleep on both sides is stuff fairytales are made of - haha - I'm 6 days post-op - when did that magical night of being able to sleep on both sides happen for you?
@@certainlyitis I started sleeping on both sides immediately. I have had no issues with that at all. I am now 3 weeks post op been driving since day 9 and used walker only 3 days. PT guy said I did better without the cane than with it.... Anterior incision was the best way!!
I am a month out from a left hip replacement. I am 52. When I was 14, I fractured my pelvis, dislocated and fractured my left hip. I spent months in traction. Here I am, years of pain, PT and Dr visits, I finally found someone to listen! Bone on bone with bone spurs, fluid pockets and extra bone scar growth from my acetabulum. I cannot wait to walk without a pop, click, fear of fall or slip! Thank you so much for your encouragement. Your voice is so calming and reassuring.
I’m so excited for you to have your THR!! It’s amazing how long we can endure with chronic pain :( Sending 🙏🏼that your surgery and recovery is great! LMK how it goes!
Very helpful! Not only the detailed presentation of various exercises, but also the combination with the exact time after the operation. Thanks for your effort, Sherri!
I’m 4 days post Op - LTHR (anterior) and came across this video. Thank you for making it. I wish I’d of seen it before my surgery but still find it helpful. I can’t wait to get through all of this :). Cheers to your recovery
Congrats on your new hip. My first couple weeks were rough but it will pass and things will get better. Just focus on how you’ll be walking pain free soon!!!!! 🙌🙌
Finally a realistic story of a hip replacement. Most of the UA-cam vids I am seeing are people walking normally in about a week. No way! I’m on day 6 and it’s very painful. I ice all day off and on 20 minutes. In a recliner all day with various assisted walks around room. Doing this alone at 78. Today was harder than yesterday. This going to take some time.
Sorry you’re still in pain. I had a lot more than I had expected. Just checked my diary and it says day 12 was my first good day where I felt real progress. Hope yours is sooner than that. DIARY: DAY 12. Woke up with NO HEADACHE for first time in a week! Hallelujah! First day feeling like I should be feeling!? No headache, energy to walk, exercise, do paperwork… Great day.
Thanks for the video…..I am 60 YO. I crashed hard in a fall, and broke my hip. I am 7 days in, post surgery….I am taking it as it comes. The big difference with an accident related hip replacement is that you get no prep before surgery AND the trauma from the fall/break itself is a complicating factor.I am working very hard to be patient.
Small world! I didn't know you were having a THR. Hope your recovery goes well -- take it slow and don't overdo it! I'm planning on doing a follow-up video showing what my hip is like 4-5 years later... as soon as I have time! :)
What a gift it was to find your video diary this evening. I head in for THA (L) in 5 hours. I cannot wait. It’s been a fairly rapid decline for my hip. I had a TKA (L) in March 2022. I was recovering from that really well. . . until I woke up in late-December with throbbing pain in the left hip, groin pain, just the works. A cortisone injection in January did nothing. Spent March through September in PT. The grating and grinding in the joint grew steadily more pronounced and painful over the course of the year. I’ve managed to stay fairly active with Pilates and occasional walks up until a week ago. Hoping that serves me well. Hoping, too, that this procedure gives me an opportunity to reclaim my life. These last three days pre-op with no NSAIDs have been tough. It is time. Thank you so much for sharing your journey. It is a lovely inspiration.
Hi Kimberly. You should be 1 day post op!!?? I hope surgery went well -- although your pain meds have probably worn off and you're feeling the worst of it now!? LMK how your recovery works out. I hope all the best of you! 🙏🏼

Well thank you for the compliment - I will tell my cinemateopher husband! I hope you are able to get some help and relief for your hips. Chronic pain is no fun 😢 Sending you 🙏🏼
Wow so glad I came across this video. I am day 5 after surgery and my pain is still not controlled. It got so bad my legs were shaking uncontrollably and wanted to vomit. This has happened 6 times in 3 days. I was trying to be conservative with the medication. I really did myself a disservice and am still trying to get control over the pain. I was told it gets easier after 2 weeks. I certainly hope so . I am 53 and was bone on bone with bone spurs and hip displacement . Your video gave me some hope and others comments .
Hang in there! I just looked over my surgery diary and I had chills my first week and headaches for first couple weeks! Definitely felt progress after 2 weeks… Up and down days of course, so you have to be prepared for that. Just do your PT slow and steady and it will happen. Please do let me know how your progress goes. Sending 🙏🏼
Thank you for doing this video! Seems I am having my surgery almost the same day of the year that you did. I am having it Feb 3rd this year. (2025). You made me see the truth and that it will get better.
Thank you, thank you Sherri! I am 77 and had my left hip replaced posterior 14 months ago. My muscles have not recovered even after all the PT and I have been on a walker all this time. I just had my right hip replaced anterior and what a difference. I am way behind you recovery schedule but your success gives me hope.
Wow, interesting to hear you found a difference. I was always told they were both fairly equal methods. I wonder if your left hip didn’t recover that well because you were still having problems with your right hip?? Maybe now that both are new joints, you can be on a solid road to a more complete recovery. I hope so! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thanks for sharing this! I'm 39 and having my total hip replacement on my right side on 5/15. I'm nervous for the recovery but I'm so ready for this pain to be gone!

I am 5 days after my right hip anterior hip replacement just like yours. I absolutely loved the time frame diary. The exercise, muscle massage and outside pt therapy through out the process gives me comfort and hope. I am going on a Christmas holiday ski vacation with my kids and grand kids and I was hoping to do some night skiing in December about 6 and 1/2 months after my operation. I will be working on my PT to the max. Thanks again!
I am 5 days past surgery. Started doing exercises at home yesterday. Using a walker to get around the house and to do some easy walking on the sidewalks. My thigh is still totally numb tho. Did you experience that?
@@AndreaGordon-m4k No numbness at all. No pain sleeping or walking, etc. Once in a while if I unexpectedly jerk my leg or slip a little, I get a sharp pain in the joint. I don’t have complete symmetry in my 2 legs’ strength or flexibility but I possibly could if I worked out more!
I just had my hip replaced it two weeks ago. I’ve been watching your video faithfully for months because I always see something new on there and yours was the most complete detailed description of what you went through and I rely on it for information.
I had the anterior total hip replacement in 2020. And I never dreamed it could be so little pain and simple. Walking around the block the day after surgery, and back to work doing construction in 13 days. No PT or rehabilitation. It was amazing. Dealt with leg swelling for about a week. No problem. Just rested the leg upward for awhile for a few days. That was all there was to it.
@@SherrisWorld I think a lot of it has to do with the skill of the surgeon, but if the patient is relatively fit going in, plus the fact that no muscles are cut, makes the Anterior THP little different than having wisdom teeth pulled. For me, that is not an exaggeration.
Hi, January 17th ‘25 & scheduled for left hip replacement on Monday. Thank you for putting up your story. It gave me a lot of insight about recovery. They tell me the hip replacement is an easier recovery than a total knee, I’ve had 4 of them. The 1st was both at the same time. Plus 2 yrs ago this month 1 wear plate replacement. Like you stated the physical therapy part is what’s so hard but you gotta push thru the pain & get mobility back. It’s never like what we were born with but close. My wife & were talking & if we were living in our grandparents age, for some of us I’m 79, we’d be in a wheel chair the rest of our lives. I feel blessed this technology exists as I’m sure you are. It has & will again “Give me my life back”. Again thank you for documenting your journey. Ron W.
Four knee replacements?! Wow! Hopefully this THR will be a breeze for you!. Sending best wishes and prayers for a solid surgery and recovery. And, yes, my husband and I've had the same conversation... so thankful we live in modern times with medical advances to help us age a bit more comfortably and actively! LMK how it goes for you!

Congratulations I think it took a lot of Courage to put your experience online and to go through the ordeal of recovering your Mobility I think you performed a great service for anyone considering the surgery. I wish you continued success
My left hip replacement surgery is scheduled for Monday. I have been dealing with osteoarthritis issues for about 10 years. After seeing this and other videos I am very hopeful. I want to get back to "normal" as much as it can be for a 70 year old man ... which is bowling in my leagues twice a week and every other Saturday (I'm a 200+ average), working on our two race cars during the Spring and Summer months, and long weekends of camping with my wife and grandkids from time to time. Fingers crossed ... then three or four months down the road it will maybe be time to replace my right knee. As my doctor says: after 30 years of baseball and 50 years of bowling it is time for some new parts. 😁
@@cheryljunkin3531 I'm okay ... my hip is doing fine, but a lot of soreness in my left upper thigh which makes it difficult to walk without the aid of a walker. Oh, Sherri, I'm so happy for you, and I thank you so much for sharing your recovery. My surgery is less than a month away, the day after I turn 62. Hi Sherri, I very happy with your presentation very informative. Well I had a Right hip 2 years ago which I could ID with your experience as well! As luck would have it I’m having my Left hip total replacement on 9/12/23 I had PT, 3 series of injections started to work. I had a CT scan and it showed that my hip is deteriorating from the inside out and she said it’s would be very bad for the hip to fracture and that would be a very bad day! I just couldn’t handle the Pain Anymore!!!😢
Having just found your video and watching your progress its beenn a great help in helping me to decide to go ahead with my surgery, although this will be my 2nd on same leg which was done when was about 47, 83 this year, I was not intending to have it done. I was born with a dislocated left hip partial socket not found out until i was 3 years old because I skipped along rather than walked, suffered dreadful pain throughout my years never was given any pain relief until I was about 44. MY mother would massage warm olive oil into it .When it was replaced It was called a Charly replacement had to be sent to a hospital in another town as the surgeon was the only one who could perform the op. I had to lie on my back for two weeks before being allowed out of bed, hence the clot on my lung andthe pain of that operation is etched in my mind but seeing your excellent step by step progress has given me the confidence to go ahead and get it done .I had a total kneee replacement in October 23 on other leg you won't believe my luck 😂 after it was completed and the knee was being routinely bent the kneecap exploded and the surgeon had to go back in and repair it so instead of 3 days in hospital I was 4 weeks ans in a brace 8 weeks so not the luckiest of candidates but coming along nicely now .My hip is ready to collapse and i'm on the list, but I was weighing up do I put up with it or give myself a chance of relief for how many years I've left, so knowing if I exercise like you I could achieve better quality of life so really appreciate you taking the time to do this to help others ,thanks again.
Oh my dear Moira!!! It sounds like you’ve had more than your share and you deserve a break!! I hope this new hip replacement will go relatively smoothly for you. I am Canadian so I'd imagine some processes are slightly different but I really appreciate this video. I'm having mine done in 20 days, 15 hours and 54 minutes (not that I'm counting). You have given me a realistic view of the aftermath. I don't expect to be off support quickly, and I know my hubs isn't going to let me back in our shop until at least 4 weeks, but I am pleased to see that recovery is doable. Knowing this will make doing the week easier. Thank you for sharing!
I also had a total hip replacement. Had been struggling to walk. Had the replacement on Saturday and out the day after. Had to pay since our nhs waiting list was 12-15months and I had been getting worse. Had been fearful of everything to do with the hospital stay. I think that the last time I was in hospital was when I was 6, so the unknown was scary. But it was painless. Had a sort of epidural but had screen between op and head! Gave me something to relax and enjoyed listening to sinead O'connor! If you are struggling, don't be scared and get it done. Am on to exercises now. Tired but on the mend on crutches.
@@paulwaterworth6795That’s great you’re on the mend! I was knocked out completely for mine. I prefer that although I did faint during recovery when they stood me up and that was scary. Hope you get some reimbursement on the medical at some point. Ouch!

Thank you for your story! I can relate. I'm 63 years old and went several years with terrible left hip pain and lower back pain. I've had five back surgeries and will need another one. I will be having my right hip replaced on May 23rd. Although I am sick of surgery and hospitals, my experience with the anterior hip replacement was great! I think it was because I was very active prior to the surgery, working out three times a week. Of course, as the pain increased, I modified my workouts, but I kept at it. Believe or not, I'm looking forward to get the right hip replaced. My left hip healed very quickly although the outside of my thigh is a little numb and I do have some pain on the left side in the mornings. I was told that it takes about two years for complete healing. My sister who is two years older had both hips and knees replaced in 2020 and 2021. After the first hip replacement, she wasn't healing and it was discovered that her femur broke, so she had a revision which has caused some issues. Falling was not the cause of the break. Apparently she has weak bones and it just happened. Again thank you for your story. It is important to let people know our experiences with this procedure. I think it can lessen fear!
Oh my, it sounds like you and your sister have had more than your share of bone and joint issues! Sending 🙏🏼 for a smooth surgery May 23! Lmk how it goes.

I am 9 days from a total hip replacement and the nerves are really kicking in! Your video was really helpful and gave me a realistic look at what to expect. Thank you! I hope you are still doing well. ;)
Thanks for watching. I’m doing well, 3 1/2 years later. Still walk and sleep with no pain and no limp. Yay! My hip is weaker w/ less flexibility than the other side, and I constantly have to stretch and exercise it to keep it from tightening up, but it’s all worth it for me! Perhaps, if you do stronger physical therapy in the beginning, you can get your muscles and scar tissue all under control, which I apparently didn’t do! Sending 🙏🏼 for a great surgery!
Finally a video not showing someone running up steps 2 days post surgery. I’m 29 days out from mine and a bit behind your progress due to post-op sciatica. You are a great inspiration. Hey Sherri, thank you for your post. I’m 39 headed into my first major surgery ever. It’s a total hip replacement. I’ve had mobility issues for 2 years. The last year I’ve experienced all the symptoms you’ve had. I cannot imagine having these symptoms for 10+yrs. I’ll be going in for the other hip 6 weeks after my first surgery. If my stars are aligned and I have no complications. It’s been a dark 2 years, though I’ll probably never run the distances I’ve gone previously, might not have the same strut, it’s re-assuring to see how you’ve grown into a new reality. Greatly appreciated.
I haven’t had my hip surgery yet, but am so thankful for these patients comments. It’ll be what it is for me and I’m grateful for the comments. Everyone is different……..prayers for all.
Thanks for sharing your experience. In a few days I am going for my left hip replacement surgery and your video showed me a lot about what to expect and possibly to overcome. 77 years old and so much to do! Thanks indeed!
Sherri, what an inspiring video. I’ve made the decision to get this but have been concerned about recovery to play tennis etc. life long tennis player. Such a great video. Thank you!
I'm so happy to see this video because I just got my right hip done two weeks, and I am struggling with the exercises .....you looks good 👍 ❤ Cat keeping track 👣 of mommy full recovery 😻.
Best recovery is slow but steady. Hope you’re feeling better and better each week. My days were up and down, so don’t be too disappointed with the roller coaster!!
Dear Sherri, Ohmygosh I am so happy to have found you - a very positive take on the anterior surgery in a sea of hip replacement videos. Though my doctor has put me on the waiting list for a replacement (here in Norway the wait is long🇳🇴), I am still on the fence. I am 69 years of age and I can hardly walk without pain, I’m still able to conduct 3 yoga classes each week (haha, I just omit pigeon pose and a few balancing asanas on the effected side) with little trouble. My fear is not being able to get back to teaching for fear of reduced mobility in a replacement ball socket. I will subscribe to your very lovely channel to see what more you have to impart on this subject that affects so many. So many thanks to you for this rare insight!🙏🏽
Hi Danielle. Glad my video gives you hope. I would think you could go back to yoga (possibly modified) after a full recovery period of your new joint and tissues/muscles, but your doctor can tell you best! The internet does seem to be all over the place on what moves you may need to modify, but in my opinion, it's worth being out of pain and not limping all the time!! I hope your surgery date is sooner than later. I do pilates now and some very gentle yoga. Please do LMK how it goes for you!!
Sherri, Sherri Baby!!! You are an inspiration and motivation. I am 10 days post anterior hip replacement and this is just what I needed to see. I haven't watched the entire video but I have saved it in my Inspriation folder. You grabbed me with your introduction and all that you went through and tried all the way up to the injections...and when those stopped working the replacement was the last. Of course just about everyone I know who have had the same done are happy as can be and back enjoying their lifestyle. You with your grandkids is the one that grabbed me. Thank you so much for creating this movie for us all to learn from. Happy Trails!!
This was so helpful and inspiring. I'm getting total hip replacement in January for bone on bone arthritis. It was so reassuring to see your progress. Thanks for creating the video and posting. Y'all did a great job on it.
Getting ready to do my hip here in two weeks thanks for doing the video. Makes me feel a little bit more comfortable knowing what to expect and I love the door in your living room. That’s pretty cool.
I just saw your video! I had a total hip replacement yesterday. It was so good to watch your videos and learn more stuff that someone who hasn’t it had done. Thanks again!!
How are you doing now? I’m just like you and was so glad to see your video! I just had my replacement June 3 and walked a mile today ❤ Also lots of weakness and hip dysplasia but 49 dealing with it for 8 years.
Sounds like you're doing great!! I'm 4.5 years post op and still walking limp free and sleeping pain free, so I'm happy. I still have occasional pain if I strain my hip join with a jerk or something and it's still not as flexible and strong as my other side, but I can live with that. I plan to do a 5 year follow up video!
Thanks for sharing. I just pass my 4 1/2 months. I also had a interior procedure. I was in great shape as a personal trainer going into this and doing the exercises although they weren’t easy I did them religiously like you did. The one thing my surgeon said because it was an interior cut not to bring my knee to my chest. I was just curious if your surgeon had any similar advice. I see that you did that often. Would love to get a response. I live in Los Angeles and I am 69 thank you.
@@ralphmichiel5987I can’t recall about pulling knee to chest but I remember by knees hurting for quite some time. I just followed my handouts and physical therapist. I know there were specific restrictions for anterior THR such as: -Avoid the combined movement of bending your hip and turning in your foot. -You should sleep with a pillow between your legs for 6 weeks. -Avoid crossing your legs and bending your hip past a right angle
My oh my have things changed since my 1st right hip replacement in 1998 when I was 38 going on 39. I had posterior approach on my right hip and then anterior for my left hip in 2006. I just recently had revision of my right prostectic hip- 25 years later. None of my surgeries were outpatient. I had inpatient rehab the first time and then again for revision. I had out patient for my left hip. Only had in-home PT with the revision. This time around has been hard. I was diagnosed with congenital hip dysplasia when I was 2 and had treatment for over 2 years includung traction, casting, and wearing a brace. I was very active throughout my life (played sports, showed hotses, water skied, snow skied). I am struggljng with being inactive. I was in the hospital and rehab for 16 days and had a transfusion. However, at 5 weeks out I am practcing using a cane and do many things on my own. It is a journey that I wish I didn't have to travel. However, I will push forward. Waiting to start outpatient PT. I have to figure out rides to and from as I can't drive for 3-4 months. You are doing awesome!
Wow, you've been through everything! I hope this was my one and only joint replacement. But time will tell!! Sending best wishes for your continued recovery!
Having hip replacement in a few days. Your video was very, very helpful! My wife studied it as if it were an exam😊. We feel that I'm ready. Thank you again.
How are you making out at this point? I hope that you are doing well. I put a new comment in today given my situation (recent heart attack) so I am looking at 2025 due to the blood thinning meds and other meds that I am and will be on. God Bless.
Hello i am from Canada and our physio is not near as good as yours. I had my hip replacement repair on 22 24:17 may 2024. 24:17 I received physio in home once a week for 2 weeks then i was sent to outside physio. I am 3 months in and still walk with a limp. I wish i had seen this before my surgery. I am definitely going to mimic your exercises. Thank you for posting this video.
Sorry to hear you are still limping. My muscles and tendons were so used to limping that it took a long time to condition myself not to limp out of "muscle memory". Ask a physical therapist if you can....and also maybe have your leg lengths checked... I've heard some people have found that one leg is slightly shorter and they need shoe orthotic inserts to help balance out.
Thank you. 3 weeks post surgery and I appreciate your timeline you shared. Gives me a better idea of where my recovery is. Kind of similar, so it helps to see the journey through another’s eyes. Great video,
Thank you Sherri for this video and a good dose of reality. I'm 3 weeks out for my surgery after almost 10 years of pain and looking forward to the challenge of returning to some sense of normal. And I agree with Suzie about people walking around 2 days after surgery, although that would be awesome, I don't believe that's the average situation for most folks.
It's incredible what a THR can do for people like you and me. Hope we both enjoy a long, long life for our new hips! Thank you for watching my video :)
Thank you thank you thank you so much for this video. I just discovered it today, however I'm 5 months post-op. I am seeing my journey all over again and realizing now how much progress we both made so quickly. Thank you for taking us on such an amazing journey and recap of how things were and I can very much appreciate the progress that we have both made. Realizing now that yes, it was painful at times, but it wasn't as bad as before the surgery.
I'm 3 weeks out and had posterior total right hip surgery. You are doing amazingly well ! I too have it acting super tight and want to avoid bad walking, so this is such a great tutorial for me! Thank you!
Thank you for showing the video make me think about my last surgery I had to go through the exercises too. Take 6 months or a year to really feel normal again. Now I have to have another surgery start all over again. Never give up. Have to be more careful now that I am older now.
This video is so helpful. I had total hip replacement 13 days ago. I'm encouraged by your slow and steady progress. Thank you for taking the time to document your recovery journey and for sharing it with us.
@@ummit989 getting better every day. I had bursitis before the surgery but not now. Still some swelling and tenderness in the leg and foot, and still a little bruising. I will stop my blood thinner tomorrow. I had 9 physical therapy visits at home, and will start outpatient PT next week. The PT really helped me regain muscle strength quickly.
Great video - thanks a lot for making it! This was informative as well as being inspirational. I need HR surgery asap but I've been too scared to schedule it. Thanks for showing your progress throughout (iow, the before, & after + the exercises), it's so very helpful & gives me courage to go through with this operation; (I think I now might be able to do it now..). Tomorrow, I'm going to show your video to my husband; I know he'll like it too.
Thank you Sherri. I appreciate you sharing your journey with all of us. Finally I get to see a realistic account of what it’s like to recover from hip surgery. In June I’m having my first hip replacement and the second one will be after I recover. You put my mind at ease and gave me a realistic look at what to expect. I kept looking at videos of people who was walking after 2 days without pain or stiffness. Congratulations on your healing. I enjoyed watching your cat and your husband is so supportive. Beautiful home. Thank you again.
I need a replacement same side, have to loose weight and got blood sugar issues. Thank you for sharing your journey, it’s a big help in so many ways. Hope you are still doing great, GOD Bless you, carry on🙏🏼♥️😍
Hi Sherri, I just wanted to say thank you so much for your video, I'm having hip replacement surgery in two days and your video gave some much needed peace of mind, so thank you!😊
Hi lovely, just what I promised last time, I will update you. Yesterday I had my hip replaced. Thanks to God🙏♥️ This morning my left leg were so heavy. I can only bend a little bit but I couldn’t lift it yet. Today is my day one. Excited to be able to walk again❤❤ hope your doing well honey.xx
Had anterior hip replacement Friday. I’m 54 and continued to exercise and maintain healthy weight leafing up to surgery. I am basically walking unassisted and am going back to work Tuesday. Absolutely changed my life
Thank you for this! I am scheduled for my surgery this Oct. 2024. My situation is also complicated and your video was very realistic, informative and helpful. I appreciate the time you took recording this and sharing your experiences. I hope you are still doing well!
This was a very helpful video. I watched it pre surgery. After surgery 1 1\2 weeks ago I am watching it again. Thank you for posting. I am glad you are back to a normal life.
I am 51 and just had a very overdue hip replacement. I wish I had seen your fabulous video earlier. It was more informative than the preparation my Dr. had given me. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you! I'm 74 and anticipate a right hip replacement in the next few months. This was very helpful in learning more of what to expect. Still nervous but encouraged. Can't continue to live in pain and not being able to walk. ❤
Good luck Susan. I have had both hips replaced, October 2021/September 2022. Surgery is key to restoring joint structure. Physio therapy is 80% of the success. Our bodies are designed to move. I am 64years old and was able to return to downhill skiing 6 months after my last hip replacement. Get the surgery, commit to daily post op PT, keep active and live painfree!
@@HipsterYu Skiing again! That’s amazing. You’re braver than me!! You had both hips done, so are they symmetrical in strength and flexibility? I’m now 3.5 yrs post op on 1 hip and still not as strong on that side. My doctors said I may never be.
@@SherrisWorld Many thanks Sherri for sharing your recovery with 'those who have walked in your shoes'. My adult daughters emboldened my courage, and my passion for skiing stoked the fire. I have been downhill skiing since I was 9 years old. (55years). My legs are now even in length and range of motion. Strength is coming along. As a 'senior', fitness means mobility and smart recreational activities. My physiotherapists suggest that I embrace a 'ski snob' attitude, where participation is in the best ski conditions, best light, a couple hours a session. I have had to give up fitness running. The impact is not recommended for bionic hipsters!
😅Wonderful videos and you are a trooper! Your husband is so encouraging and supportive too. They suffer right along with us. Hopefully I'll be having my right hip replaced in July and I've been using a cane or walker for at least a year. The pain's been brutal. Getting in the car has become almost unbearable. Good grief!! My husband and I are both looking forward to me returning to full activity or even half way back to normal. I noticed that at one point you stopped referring to your legs as "my good leg" or "my bad leg". That's pretty much how our legs appear sometimes. I'm going to have my husband take videos too so I can rejoice in my progress as the days, weeks and months go by. Thank you again for your encouraging words and videos!! God bless you and you husband and family. Linda Nightingale
Thank you for your comments and for watching. I hope you're able to have the surgery this summer and it relieves you of the pain! Sending 🙏 and good wishes your way!! LMK how it goes!
I am a former long distance runner, and have had both hips replaced, Oct 2021/Sep 2022. At 63yrs old osteoarthritis of both hips reduced my quality of life. Good luck with surgery and keep faithful to daily post op physio. Surgery will erase your pain, exercise will gift you a fuller active life for you and your family.
Dr wants to do hip replacement on me
I'm terrified.
Holly molly!! This really gives me inspiration. Thank you for sharing this story.
@@AlanInAZ1 it's been 3 yrs hip replacement still sore as he'll where they cut me. I think I have sciatica pain to sucks
Wow! A second hip ! I can’t seem to get 1 .. yet , they keep saying I’m too young :( but I am in debilitating discomfort :( the wait is hard
I had bi-lateral hip replacements 3 years ago at 59 years old. Best decision ever, love life again!
Take care.
I’m 8 days postop, left hip anterior too! Little to no pain today, walking comfortably with or without a cane. Feels like a miracle!
That’s terrific. Sounds like you’re recovering faster than me! Keep up the physical therapy as long as you can. Congratulations!
I want to get mine but I’m so scared😢
I have one coming up and I am very nervous about how I will do?
I pray for a successful surgery and a successful recovery 🙏🏻
I’m on day 4 post op. Just went down the driveway and back with a cane. Some burning in the thigh at first, but it goes away in a minute. I think I need to slow down a bit, but I feel good.
Good to hear, same for me 9 days ago total hip replacement and just smiling. Get life back again and no pain, just all good walking without cane.
Thank you! Very helpful! Finally someone I can relate to explaining and ‘showing’ what it looks like without it being a clinical lesson. Thanks!
Glad my video helped. That's why I made it -- I couldn't find any relatable ones prior to my surgery!
Whaaaaat ! 😭
@@annemoretti3173 May I ask then how did you get them on and off if you had no help ? How you eat drink etc?
@@annemoretti3173 How are you doing now?
😊
Good luck!

WoW... watching this video was like I felt every moment of it. I Just had hip surgery due to me, passing out at work and broke my hip and my back. I am two months out. Thanks for letting me know what I am to look forward too.
Wow, you broke your back also?!! So sorry to hear. Hope you are recovering well!!!
I had my hip replaced last December and now I’m walking like I never had a hip replacement. Pain free!😊
Yea!!!!!!!!!!! So happy for you!!! 👍👏🏼🙌 wishing you continued good health!
Thank you for posting this video. This a more realistic journey for the average total hip joint replacement patient.
This is one of the best videos I’ve seen for post hip surgery. This helps to see your progress and your pain rather than just hear testimonials. Thank you
Such a nice comment! I'm glad my video story helps -- Thank you for watching :)
Just had hip replacement today THR the pain afterward is no joke.... i hope it gets better!!!!
@SherrisWorld thank you so much!!! Just had mine today!!! The pain is rough and the stiffness gets worse as the day goes on!!!
I can tell how blessed you are having a supportive family. My biggest fear is going through this alone. Have had pain for years and not looking forward to this.
Yes, having help was a big bonus! If you can get a friend or neighbor to help for at least a few hours for a few days, it would be very reassuring for you. Sending 🙏🏼.
Sorry my friend, I'm in the same predicament.Im having to have to do the same, plus scard too death.
That's how I feel now. All medical roads are leading to a left hip replacement for me. I'm independent but it would be nice to have someone by my side whenever I'm scheduled for this operation and a few days afterwards. I will pray to God for his help and peace. Ultimately, I feel positive.
@@cyn2480 A lot of us in the same boat........no one to call on for some help.........
I'm a 71 year old widow who had a replacement last October and can't tell today. No nurse, aide, or anything besides a 2 day visit from my daughter. She was shocked my independence.
A small tip for people who are having trouble getting in and out of bed and have a hard time using the leg lift strap-
I sat at the end of my bed and scooted backwards, using my arms and non-surgical leg to propel myself in small scoots, backwards, into my bed. Then as I scooted back, the bed itself lifted up my surgical leg for me. It was a lifesaver when my caretakers were not present to help put the lifting strap on my foot❤
I figured out how to do it, out of necessity, after my labral repair surgery.
How did you get out of the bed?
@@Cloud-yo1he The reverse of getting in. I would scoot down to the end of my bed.

My journey through recovery was very similar to yours. The most joy I experienced was when I was again able to rollover and sleep on the operative hip side. It was like a great burden had been lifted - and it improved sleep.
Yes!! I love being able to sleep on both sides again!! 🙌🙌🙌

I am so sorry to hear of your accident. Hope you are starting to feel better in your recovery!
Too crazy that I came across this! 7 days post op and much more encouraged after watching your journey. Glad to see you doing so well ❤
Small world!
I did my on February 21 on 2024 and am glad I did cause now I can walk anywhere TkGod🙏😊

I need both hips done since last 17yrs...but am so scared as I live alone.
Thank you so so much for enlightening us ❤
Well thank you for the compliment - I will tell my cinemateopher husband!
Sending 🙏🏼
Thank you for replying that is very sweet of you and yes I will update you.
Thank you for doing this video! Seems I am having my surgery almost the same day of the year that you did. I am having it Feb 3rd this year. (2025). You made me see the truth and that it will get better.
Next week!! I’m excited for you love it once the recovery is over!!
@SherrisWorld thank you.
I hope so! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
That is my dream !
Thanks for sharing this! I'm 39 and having my total hip replacement on my right side on 5/15. I'm nervous for the recovery but I'm so ready for this pain to be gone!

@ thank you so much!! This is so helpful to hear! And thanks for replying :) glad you’re doing much better too
I am 5 days after my right hip anterior hip replacement just like yours.
Congratulations on your new hip!! Hope your skiing goals work out! You’re braver than me!! 😜🎿⛷️
This helped so much. I just got home yesterday from the same type of surgery. The pain is pretty bad. Thank you
Congrats on your new hip!! My first 10 days were rougher than I’d anticipated but it does get better. Hang in there!
Having right hip replaced in 3 weeks. Your video helped tremendously to alleviate some anxiety.
So glad it helped. Wishing you the BEST for your surgery. LMK how it goes!
I am 5 days past surgery. Started doing exercises at home yesterday. Using a walker to get around the house and to do some easy walking on the sidewalks. My thigh is still totally numb tho. Did you experience that?
@@AndreaGordon-m4k Yes, it was numb for a long time. Seemed like forever. Maybe 2 months???
How are you getting along now?
@@AndreaGordon-m4k No numbness at all. No pain sleeping or walking, etc. Once in a while if I unexpectedly jerk my leg or slip a little, I get a sharp pain in the joint. I don’t have complete symmetry in my 2 legs’ strength or flexibility but I possibly could if I worked out more!
I just had my hip replaced it two weeks ago. I’ve been watching your video faithfully for months because I always see something new on there and yours was the most complete detailed description of what you went through and I rely on it for information.
Thnks for watching (repeatedly :) -- I hope you are feeling better and better with each passing day!
I love how authentic and honest you are...this will help so many people. The best part is you are out of pain...what an extraordinary gift.
Thank you for watching ... and sharing in my gratitude of this true gift xo
@@bantumwt Sounds like you were one of the lucky ones!! Congrats on your new hip and pain free walking!
@@SherrisWorld A lady I work with just had the same surgery a month ago. And she had a very similar outcome. She was back to work in 2 weeks.
@@bantumwt Amazing!
@@SherrisWorld I think a lot of it has to do with the skill of the surgeon, but if the patient is relatively fit going in, plus the fact that no muscles are cut, makes the Anterior THP little different than having wisdom teeth pulled. For me, that is not an exaggeration.
Thank you for your inspiring video

Thank you for this!!! I am 8 days post op and have been so frustrated with myself because I see all these other people walking without assistance and thinking I should be further along. Reality is everyone recovers at their own pace, but this made me feel so much better!!! Thanks for documenting everything. 😉
You are most welcome! Exactly why I made the video!!!
How are you doing now.........6 months later.?????
Mary Martinez unless you personally know people that have these remarkable recoveries take a grain of salt. Some people just lie their guts out. Mary don't be too hard on yourself. you will get there. today 30/5/23 I'm just over 3 weeks from my hip replacement I'm now moving around without a walker but slowly does it.

Hope you are bowling, camping and more in a couple months!!!! LMK how it goes for you!
How’re you doing now?
@@thomaschetney990 Best of luck with your second hip! You’re an old pro at this now :)
Sherri I'm so proud of you to endure through this from before to now
Having just found your video and watching your progress its beenn a great help in helping me to decide to go ahead with my surgery, although this will be my 2nd on same leg which was done when was about 47, 83 this year, I was not intending to have it done.
The first couple weeks were the hardest, but it sure was worth it for me and I hope the same for you. Sending 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 to you. Lmk how you do!
This video came at a perfect time for me. I’ve always had hip dysplasia and now arthritis so I’m getting my hip replacement December 26. I’m 64 years old. Your video really helped me know what to expect and when. Thanks again!
Not sure if you celebrate Christmas, but sounds like you're getting a new hip for the holidays!! Best of luck in your surgery and recovery. 🙏🏼 LMK how it goes for you!!
Haha your countdown is funny! Can’t wait to hear how your surgery and recovery goes. Wishing you the BEST 🙏🏼🤞🏼🙏🏼

Thanks for sharing. I just pass my 4 1/2 months. I also had a interior procedure. -You should sleep with a pillow between your legs for 6 weeks.
-Avoid crossing your legs and bending your hip past a right angle

I had out patient for my left hip. Only had in-home PT with the revision. This time around has been hard. So sorry about your heart attack. @@GeneBlessing Not sure how @darknikkon1974 is doing after his hip replacement?
Great video,
Hope you’re feeling better!! Keep up with the physical therapy for at least a year!! Slow but steady.
Very helpful, just the information I needed! 👍👍 I am scheduled for the end of January. Thank you so much!!! 💜
Wishing you all the best for your surgery! LMK how it goes!
How are you doing now? I bit better? It does take time.
Thanks for watching ...and glad your surgery is also behind you! I'm hoping to do a 5 year follow up video soon. Stay tuned :)
I'm 3 weeks out and had posterior total right hip surgery. You are doing amazingly well ! I too have it acting super tight and want to avoid bad walking, so this is such a great tutorial for me! Thank you!
It's a slow but steady recovery! Hang in there and thank you for watching!
Thank you for showing the video make me think about my last surgery I had to go through the exercises too. Take 6 months or a year to really feel normal again. Now I have to have another surgery start all over again. Never give up. Have to be more careful now that I am older now.
Aging is fun, huh?! Best of luck on your next surgery!!!!
This video is so helpful. I had total hip replacement 13 days ago. I'm encouraged by your slow and steady progress. Thank you for taking the time to document your recovery journey and for sharing it with us.
How are you now
Did you have any bursitis in your hip
Glad it helped. Almost every day, my husband and I comment how wonderful it is to have pain-free walking back in my life! Wishing you the best!
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words. I wish you all the best with your upcoming surgeries! LMK how it goes for you!
@@SherrisWorld I sure will.
I need a replacement same side, have to loose weight and got blood sugar issues. Thank you for sharing your journey, it’s a big help in so many ways. Hope you are still doing great, GOD Bless you, carry on🙏🏼♥️😍

That's wonderful. I am alone. My husband passed away 3 years ago.
Very helpful as I'm scheduled for my left hip this Tuesday. I hope my recovery is as steady as yours.
@@lpmama1196 Good luck tomorrow! Hope your recovery is better and faster than mine! LMK how it goes! 🙏🏼
Just watched as my surgery is a couple weeks out. Thanks for this, it helped alleviate some of my fears. Hope you are doing well.
Wishing you a magnificent surgery and recovery!!!

@@SherrisWorld thanks ever so much 🙏♥️xx
Thank you for sharing! I just had Total Hip Replacement and was searching for a timeline like this. I appreciate you and your videographer!
Thanks for watching. Hope your recovery is going well!
New hip replacement just three weeks ago. Thrilled! Healing very fast, working on endurance and undoing some bad habits.
Yay!!! Congratulations!
Had anterior hip replacement Friday. I’m 54 and continued to exercise and maintain healthy weight leafing up to surgery.
I am basically walking unassisted and am going back to work Tuesday.
Absolutely changed my life
Wow that’s so great to hear! Wishing you a continued fabulous recovery!
Thank you for this! I am scheduled for my surgery this Oct. 2024. My situation is also complicated and your video was very realistic, informative and helpful. I appreciate the time you took recording this and sharing your experiences. I hope you are still doing well!
@@birdcrazy2689 Wishing you the best for your surgery and recovery! 🙏🏼
@@donnatibedo238 Glad it helped and hope you’re coming along with your recovery! I plan to do a 5-year post-surgery follow-up video soon. Stay tuned.
Thank you. I'm scheduled for my first of two next week. October 11, 2023
Wow, best of luck to you!! How far apart will you have the two surgeries?
Thank you! I'm 74 and anticipate a right hip replacement in the next few months. This was very helpful in learning more of what to expect. Still nervous but encouraged. Can't continue to live in pain and not being able to walk. ❤
I wish you all the best! It is wonderful to walk and sleep without pain. 🙏🏼
