Easy to Grow & Nutritious Lau Pele, aka Tongan Bele
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- Lau Pele, also known as Tongan Bele, Slippery Cabbage, and Edible Hibiscus, is considered to be the most nutritious vegetable in all of Oceania. It is so easy to grow!!! With Covid-19, we realized the importance of growing our own food from perenial plants that do not require seeds. They are cultivated most successfully from cuttings. We are wanting to educate people on the benefits, cultivation and preparation of this delicious plant. You can eat it raw or cooked, but to be honest we love it cooked the most. Grows best in tropical and subtropical areas.
Enjoy!

A Healthy Life
For us here in Fiji we call it 'bele' and it goes really well with coconut milk or cream. Great content by the way, definitely subscribing.
Aloha I.N.Tiko, Thanks so much for sharing. I have more videos planned, but it will be a month or so as we just lost a loved one. Looking forward to learning more and sharing. May your garden flourish:)
@@ahealthylife421sorry to hear that, my sincerest condolences.
That is quite alright, no rush necessary. Looking forward to more great content. Once again, you have my heart and prayers. May their soul and essence find peace.
Kana vinaka NA bele
I can't find this plant in México. I would like to have a cutting of this plant
It is called aibika in Papua New Guinea and we cook it in coconut milk or cream. Aibika goes well with taro, cassava, banana, yam, sweet potato or sago.
I live in Queensland, Australia and grow the aibika in my backyard without fertiliser and get the big leaves when we have rain.
Woww I love this bele leaves ❤
Wish I have this in my garden❤❤
Pele n taro lief is the reason why the people of the South Pacific aka Polynesian, Melensian are naturally strong people. Grew up only eating meat once, twice a week. Most nights ate taro, cassava or sweet potato with pele n coconut milk...
Mike, Thanks for sharing!
That is so amazing. I didn't even know taro leaf was edible. I always learn so much from the comments on videos too! lol
Onions plus any meat until cooked with the la'i pele then coconut milk last

I'm in San Diego CA and bought 6 sticks from Hawaii. After a year in pots they are doing well and I enjoy adding them to other dishes. I did find they prefer the inside during the winter. I think they would be okay outside in the ground.

Hello, I'm in San diego too. Do you know were I can find this plant. I can't find anywhere to buy it.

Thank you very much! This information is very helpful. I have Aunt Lili's Variety (Bele Tree) and it doesn't have any branches and is 5 feet tall. It doesn't seem like you are pinching back the new growth to make it branch out?
Hi Becky, We have so much that we can give it away fast enough. Love the new tender leaves once we pinch off the older ones. The baby ones are great in salads.

Must try cooking in coconut milk. Add some fried fish to the mix, some onions and salt. Eat this dish with some cooked cassava or plantains.

Great video
Very educational video!
I need that plant
Is it ok to plant it indoors?
Thanks
Aloha, I have never tried planting it indoors. If you try it, let us know how it goes. I think it would work. It grows fast so you'd want to trim it and eventually change it out with a younger starts.
Do you sell cuttings?
If you do let me know I am interested to try grow them
Don't sale the stick to anyone Because I'm greed and wanted to keep it to my self make money 😂
Hi how did you fertilize it?
We did not fertilize. We covered our ground in wood chips over a two year period and let them break down. We planted in the soil made by the wood chips. I found lau pele doesn't like it if I plant in compost that hasn't broken down enough and has lots of wood chips, however my ong choy thrives in that compost.
