I really like the addition of how to cook to the videos. I wouldnt be upset at all if you started doing this with all your how to grow videos!
I think I’m going to start highlight some of the more lesser known plants along with how to cook with them. Next up, Chaya! Mahalo for the feedback
This is growing all around my farm 😎🤙
It grows so easily!
Thank you for this video Sean! I would love to see the whole island growing this plant!
I love to use the big leaves in smoothies. Its mild flavor doesn't overpower like kale and spinach can, and it creates a great texture!
I see it everywhere but not enough people know how to use it. Hopefully this helps. Careful with RLWD if eating it raw.
we planted one near compost too ant its my new favorite green to eat! i put it in curry all the time
It’s so easy to use
Laupele was only adopted across a larger audience, particularly Samoa and Tonga, due to the significant kalo crop losses that depleted supply of kalo by upwards of 90%. Laupele was seen as one of the only viable substitutes for lū'au (taro leaves) at the time.
Laupele might be considered nutritious, but it's a lot harder to work with and process because of the higher levels of calcium oxalates that require longer and more tedious preparation. It's texture is also a lot more slimy, similar to okra, which can be very unappealing. It also requires significantly more irrigation than other vegetable crops that are a lot more easy to cultivate and that have higher nutritional profiles; i.e. chaya and moringa.
I did not know all of that, except for the slimy part, thanks for sharing. I’ll highlight Chaya next!
Belivin pruth!
Aloha Sean,
Can you tell me who I can contact to discover what will grow in Mountain View at 2,200 ft.? I’m hoping for an eventual food forest.
I really appreciate your UA-cam page !!
Mahalo Bob Z
Are you on our homesteadin Hawaii fb group? There is a crowdsourced spreadsheet that could help you
Aloha!
Where can I buy Laupele seed or clippings? I live on Oahu, near Leahi
I will happily buy some off of you if that could work out!
I can sell you cuttings, but you would have to wait until August. Would you mind sending me an email at swjennings@gmail.com so that I can remember to connect with you again when I am back on island?
Have you tried to make Laulau with it ?
Not yet. I just like kalo leaf so much, but I heard it was used as a replacement for a while when the taro was having pest issues
please silr may i ask why in hawaii do they clear most of hawaii instead of making places fit in
Cause people suck, it really it’s about ease of maintenance and mosquitoes. A cleared lot is easier to mow and more airflow is less mosquitoes
Anyone know its Latin/scientific name? I can't work out what it's called here in Indonesia
Abelmoschus manihot
@@HomesteadinHawaii TY now i can grow it too if i can get it in germany
bele spinach
we sautee it with garlic and onions, its great
Another name!
You mean edible hibiscus? Yeah it gets kinda funny with the “Havvai’ian” names for things..
You know that Havvai’ian chilis are actually “candle light” peppers, no?
🌶️
I did not know about the name for peppers but I figured there was another name
